I remember Telecom Gold. The networks shown in the video are X25 based packet switch services via a X3/X28/X29 PAD, known as PSS in the UK.

You'd have to lug around a terminal of some sort, and an acoustic coupling modem. We had a bunch of guys in the field with TI Silent 700 terminals that had a built-in modem. I think they only supported 300 baud, which was barely tolerable.
