Would you put items in your shopping bags/handbag before paying ?

I work in a warehouse style shop but it does sell smaller items like little bags of bird seed. For some reason lots of people 65+ seem to put the items straight into their own handbags/shopping bags before paying. I don’t think they intentionally steal at all but often when I’m like can I just check what you’ve got, it’s different to what they say when they slam their bag on the counter.
Do old people just do this because they can get away with it ? We provide baskets and trolleys and I would never do this in a shop as to me it just looks like stealing ? I can’t really compare in terms of bias because it literally seems to be something only people of that age group do ? Everyone else uses a basket or trolley then after paying put it in their own bag which I think is the normal thing to do.
doegrey@reddit
I carry a tote bag for what I’m buying. Of course I’m going to put it in the bag until I go through the till.
I’m not going to carry a bag and my items separately. That’s ridiculous! 😂
chocklityclair@reddit
I'm confused by your post.
Firstly, you say that you 'don't think they're intentionally stealing.' They're not stealing at all - they're carrying an item around in their bag. Do you mean that they 'don't intend to steal' the items? Because that has quite a different meaning to the phrase you used.
Secondly, you say that when you stop someone to ask what's in their bag, they say something different at the checkout. So are you letting them put it back in the bag and then secretly following them to see if they bring it out at the till? And if so, how often is this happening?
Thirdly, why do they all 'slam' their bags down?
In regard to your question about age range, the number of people over 50 shoplifting has risen with the rising cost of living. It's still less than ⅓ of the total, though. So it's not accurate to say that nobody else does it.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
So we’re independent warehouse that sells large homewares, some DIY, some labourer supplies etc. so not the same setup as a supermarket. I never say that I stop people to look in. What I’m saying is when the older customers get to the till they slam their bag on the counter but still hold on top and go for example ‘2x bird seed, 2 xmealworm’ and then get ready to pay. When I go ‘ah can I just check your bag’sometimes they might have accidentally ( me giving benefit of the doubt because it happens so much) have 3x bird seed but they are very defensive about me looking and want to pay asap. I don’t think they’re stealing on purpose what my point is there’s a system for a reason of out the items in basket and pass to person on till for a reason, our stock levels are often wrong due to this and sometimes people are even getting it wrong saying they’ve got more of an expensive item and they actually don’t.
chocklityclair@reddit
Ah, okay. So they're expecting someone to just take their word for what's in the bag? 😕
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah aha! Seriously really common! Like multiple customers a day and shocked/ offended that I ask to see what’s in there!
chocklityclair@reddit
Weird that it's birdseed. I guess they think it's not an offence if it's not for them 🙁
NoFewSatan@reddit
There's nothing confusing about this post.
chocklityclair@reddit
Good for you. Well done. Would you like a sticker?
Maybe let the OP answer, though.
Rubostars@reddit
I always put the items in my own shopping bag in the supermarket, unless I'm using a trolley. Baskets are awkward to handle, especially those weird ones with 2 wheels are stupidly bulky. Plus usually they're filthy
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
My local Morrisons doesn't have scan as you shop, so instead of using a basket, I use my bag for life. Otherwise I don't have enough hands to carry and pick up stuff.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
But I don’t get why you can’t use a basket and put the stuff in your bags at the end ? You’d have the same amount of hands ?
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
Basket in one hand, bag in the other, or it's all piled on top of each other in the basket meaning I cant pack as I scan
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah so you’re saying you have your items in your basket then scan and put in your bag ? That’s totally normal and exactly what I’m saying to me in the obvious thing to do
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
I use the bag as a basket and take items out of the bag to scan at the self serve
Wooden_Chain_1086@reddit
If im only grabbing a handful of items and need to use both hands to get something ill put stuff into a bag while I grab what I need
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
But couldn’t you use both hands and then put it in trolley or basket ?
Wooden_Chain_1086@reddit
An example I can think of was yesterday, walked i to sainsburys to grab a meal deal - not going to pick up a basket for that. Picked up a drink and wrap then decided id get a pastry, one hand needed for a paper bag and one needed for the tongues to get it. Put the stuff in my thermal bag then proceeded to get the pastry
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
So my point is, many people may do this and genuinely forget the puff pastry is in the cool bag not saying you would but I certainly know I could ( busy, tired, rushing). Would you be offended if a staff member came up and said here’s a basket can you put it in here till you’ve paid ?
Wooden_Chain_1086@reddit
Hard to imagine a member of staff handing baskets out to people grabbing a meal deal at lunch, though if youre asking should people be picking up a basket instead of using their bags if they know they're not going to be able to carry everything before they've started shopping then yes, that's what I do when im grabbing a few bits after work (let's say a couple pizzas and sides for arguments sake)
A_In_Wonderland@reddit
Yes I use a canvas tote bag and put all the stuff in it as I go, because it’s too hard to push a buggy and carry a basket (if it’s a big shop I’ll get a trolley and put the baby in there).
I would never put things in my handbag though (ie a bag that also has other stuff in there). I always assumed the tote bag was fine because I very clearly empty it at the self checkout then put it on the bagging area the other side to re-fill.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah as I say my shop isn’t a supermarket and theres not a barcode on every item so what’s happening is often the customers I’m talking about just want to ‘tell me’ what they have. Obviously with self checkout in a supermarket it goes of wait etc. and doesn’t let you proceed if it doesn’t match up.
Fish_Minger@reddit
I have a supermarket within walking distance. I often take a canvas bag in my pocket, buy a few things, using the bag instead of a basket, then empty it at the till to pay.
I can understand how you think it may look like stealing if it were a rigid opaque bag, capable of holding items you can't see, but in the case of a canvas bag, it's clear it's empty, so I don't have any issues. I just make an effort to visibly empty it at the point of sale.
I'm quite far off 65.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah it’s not even necessarily intentional though, and as I say I’m not talking about in a supermarket. So often people can accidentally take more items than they say or sometimes even less ! Either way it makes stock levels wrong on the working side of things and people may have something in the bottom of their tote they don’t see which is far less likely to Happen in a basket or trolley.
sookietea@reddit
Yes I do this all the time. I wouldn’t put stuff in a handbag, that does feel like stealing even if I fully intend to pay for it. But a canvas or bag for life is fine. Baskets are unwieldy and I don’t often need a trolly.
unwantedplayr@reddit
I work in a shop and most of the older people that do this do it to see how much they can carry and walk home with, obviously I can't speak for all of them but in my experience that's always been the reason
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah they mainly get into massive white range rovers where I work but I do see your point. We do carry out many items for our customers also, so after being reluctant for me to see what’s in the bag they usually ask me to carry it out (which is fine, obviously part of my job and I don’t want anyone to physical struggle of course ) but I appreciate this would definitely apply in lots of other situations.
GlitchingGecko@reddit
I do with shopping bags all the time, as long as they're empty to start with.
I'm clearly disabled though, so I think it's pretty obvious I'm not going to run out without paying.
AuroraDF@reddit
I'm 53 and have never seen this with older or younger people. I've lived in Norfolk, London, the Highlands, Edinburgh, Dundee. Shopped everywhere from Aldi to Waitrose. Where is this happening? I see folk replying that they do it and I'm surprised!
It seems like quite a good idea though. It's not uncommon for me to find myself with my hands full in Lidl, without a basket. I carry a foldable tote bag - it has never once occurred to me to put my stuff in it before I've paid for it (except in scan and shop, or Amazon Fresh).
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Thank you ! Yeah I don’t know if it’s a post Covid thing or what ? I grew up always being told not to do it and I have mentioned elsewhere perhaps it’s a class thing? I know how my family look if we were doing that we would be stopped ( we are all hard working decent people but like have visible tattoos, dad has shaved head etc ?) Maybe those that look more middle class don’t have that problem?
It’s conforming to me that it’s not gone stop for me anytime soon at my work haha
AuroraDF@reddit
I grew up in a very working class family and area, and now I'm decidedly middle class, so I don't know if it can be a class thing. Maybe regional? I wonder where the people saying they've seen it are from.
Maybe I'm just really unobservant and/or good at minding my own business. Lol
I wish you luck with managing that! I used to work (long ago) in a shop that sounds similar to yours and I can imagine the difficulty!
buginarugsnug@reddit
I only do it when I'm using scan as you shop. I'd never do it at a place where that isn't available.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah this makes sense to me !
Ok-Answer-7138@reddit
Exactly this, scan as you shop is a great way to save time but using your bag as a trolley does the opposite
reddiuniquefool@reddit
I would never do this before reaching the till. But, when things are scanned in my bag they go, and I pay at the end.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah that’s totally normal !
SloightlyOnTheHuh@reddit
It's not stealing until I walk out the door with it. Baskets are awkward, I only want 3 things so a trolly is daft and sometimes I need a pound to unlock it.
I have an empty shopping bag, I put my 3 items in it, I take them out at the till. I'm happy to show you it's now empty. As my daughter would say, it's not too deep
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Totally agree, I think my point is as I say they come up to the counter and say I’ve got ‘x,y,z’ and then if I say ooh can I just check and it’s often actually different but some of them are very reluctant. I don’t think they’re intentionally stealing but just confused or forgotten or just like simple mistake. So to me that’s why we have the system of ‘hand basket to person on till and then they give it you back to pack.’ We’re an independent so don’t have like a right up close cctv camera on customer like when you do self checkout.
catsnbears@reddit
I’ve got my own retail shop and found it a lot with old people, they struggle to grip things so they put it in their bag but then act so offended that you ask to them to remove the items at the counter to scan them
It may be a coincidence but the type of shop we are, the only thefts I’ve had have been by women aged 70+ it’s very random
Jingoldsby@reddit
I would just say you need to scan them so you can keep track of stock.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yes this is it! I’ve maybe not made it clear in my post it’s the fact they’re very reluctant to let me check or to remove items from the bag at the counter… it’s an odd thing that yes does only seem to be with older people.
catsnbears@reddit
They seem to have a weird thing at least in my shop. They will go through the shelf to find the best looking item in the package the least damaged ( we sell lighting and associated homewares so it’s not because of sell by dates ) and then seem to be like dragons guarding a hoard, they don’t like you touching it again. It’s so very strange
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yesss they do 😂🤷🏻♀️ sometimes I can hear the rustling and I’m like what are you actually doing over there 😂
catsnbears@reddit
lol, it’s funny to talk about this with someone else experiencing it. The grab as soon as you’ve scanned it as they shove it back in their bags. It’s always followed up by the shoving a £20 note in your face while you’re still halfway through inputting the rest of their shopping and then the inevitable (at least in my case) “can I have a receipt, I like to keep them”. At which point my trade till prints them out a nice sheet of A4 which they go “you didn’t have to waste all that paper” and they try to shove it in a zip up puts with bells attached on the zip. This is apparently because the WI insists it will make them hear if their purse is being stolen, (I was curious and asked once. ) despite the fact they never hear the card machine beep in front of them ‘has it gone through yet’…….
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
HahahhAhah yeah it does make me laugh that people have the attitude of like ‘you’re out to get them’ 😂 I’m like I am just a lady managing an outdoors warehouse I do not have a scheme against you !
Headlight-Highlight@reddit
Barcode everything (or pretend you do), so each item has to be presented.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
This is a good point but even with barcode items many are reluctant but then at least we can say but we have to see it
Djinjja-Ninja@reddit
Legally that isn't entirely true. The act of theft is complete if you put it into your bag with the intent of not paying.
Obviously it's difficult to prove that intent until you bypass the tills with items in your bag, but from a legal standpoint you do not need to have walked out of the door for it to be theft.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah I do not know who has told people this 😭 go in Harrods or selfridges and start putting stuff in your pockets and go ‘ actually legally I have not left the store’ and see what happens 😭😂
BobMonroeFanClub@reddit
I'm an old lady and use a shopping trolley. I can't pull the trolley and carry a basket (Lidl have only got massive ones) so I put everything in my trolley and then show them at the till that my trolley is empty.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah no bother with this at all! I think maybe I’ve not made it clear in the post they often seem reluctant to actually let me get the stuff out the bag they just want to ‘tell me’ what’s in it.
BobMonroeFanClub@reddit
I just didn't want anyone to think there are vast swathes of grey haired OAP shoplifters lol. It's mostly that we've got arthritis :)
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Hahaha yeah as I say I don’t actually think it’s older people purposely shop lifting ! I think it’s being reluctant to follow the rules that obvs make it easier for the shop and then them accidentally making mistakes!
BobMonroeFanClub@reddit
I am very careful to not steal even accidentally as I'm a lot closer to the pearly gates than you lot and I don't want to be denied entry because I pinched a Lidl cucumber in 2026 lol.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Hahahhaha I won’t tell !
Estrellathestarfish@reddit
I'm quite surprised by these comments, I've been conditioned to never put anything in my bag before paying and I don't tend to see anyone else do it either - I wonder if it varies regionally?
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Well, no I think it’s odd !! I’m wondering if it’s a class thing though maybe, I’m working class and I know that if I’d gone round the shops with my dad growing up ( tall shaved head etc.) we would have been stopped same for me now I have visible tattoos etc. so maybe people who are middle class aren’t as conscious as they’re more like well ‘I’m not rough and won’t be perceived as rough’ that’s the only thing I can think of because yeah I’m the same haha
shanrees8@reddit
I went into a shop with my backpack thinking I'd only grab 2 or 3 things. Ended up getting more then I could hold so I put most of it in my bag and slung it over my shoulder. I didn't have any anxiety about it because I knew I wasn't stealing i was just using it as a glorified shopping basket
Revolutionary-Rub231@reddit
I work in an Aldi store & customers do this all the time. Instead of grabbing a basket they fill up their shopping bag with goods, ready to unload at the till or self scan. I dont think in all honesty that most realise how suspicious it looks from a store assistants perspective. But as we're all told to watch out for shop lifters daily, we have no choice but to ask people to show us their bags are empty before we or they start the scanning process. We've caught many customers who 'forgot' to take all items out of their bag. People do get abit angry sometimes at being asked to show inside their shopping bag, but from our side, they should understand we get in trouble if we dont check & cctv has picked up the person stealing.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah I don’t think many commenters are getting this side of things! And then there is an element of bias because if they have ‘forgot’ and they’re a sweet old lady we do say okay but for instance I’m a 29 year old with visible tattoos, would it be the same that people would just buy that I forgot ? Maybe not 🤷🏻♀️ so just makes it easier for everyone.
Ancient-Awareness115@reddit
I have done it when using crutches, but I specifically used a string bad so the contents could be seen, carrying a basket was just too awkward
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah this makes perfect sense and in those cases to be honest people usually say and I’m like yeah no bother, but they still hand me the bag to scan through the items. Lots of the people I’m talking about just hang on to it and say what they have or hold on to it on the counter 🤷🏻♀️
NiceDoor4444@reddit
I think you're going to have to tell these customers that you have to scan every item. Even if you don't really have to. Also say to them that its a directive from management implemented due to petty theft. You could say in a shocked and surpised manner that you heard that some people aren't paying for everything in their bag so management have created this bew rule that applies to everyone!
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
This is a great point but I am the manager and honestly lots of the people in the demographic I’ve mentioned would be SO offended and furious I can’t even explain. Like you’re 100% correct but when you’re an independent store in a town where people know or ‘think’ they know the owner it’s so hard to navigate these interactions.
Ancient-Awareness115@reddit
In that case they are trying to get away with stealing something
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
No honestly this is literally 50%+ of customers over 65+ and I don’t think they are I think they’re offended that they think I think that if that makes sense?
ToastedCrumpet@reddit
Nah I’ve been accused of stealing on more than one occasion for pulling my own bag for life out of my bag so I wouldn’t risk it lol
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
😂
LichenTheMood@reddit
I can’t always carry everything and I want to make sure what I do buy I can carry home.
I can’t physically carry the shop provided baskets, which is a common issue tbh for folks who aren’t fully mobile or who have issues with their joints. I usually remember to bring a separate bag for my shopping but sometimes I get caught out. Not sure what I’m expected to do otherwise to be honest. A lot of smaller shops just don’t have trollies.
I think there is a lot of baked in ableism to the expected shopping experience. If people need to do something differently then they must be stealing. I have accepted that I’m going to be followed around shops, it used to set off my anxiety but now I just find it silly. I have watched as loss prevention walk- straight past someone with a backpack on the floor swiping an entire shelf of meat. Just to laser in on following me because I had to put a can of coke in my pocket lest I drop it while juggling the rest of the meal deal. I suspect if I did decline to scan that coke the partial meal deal would end up charging me more!
You do have to present the items you wish to buy to be scanned at the checkout though and it’s wild to me that you have folks unwilling to do so.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Sorry this is your experience! With where I work we actually sell lots of larger items and always offer to help people carry their stuff ( I’ve even walked a few streets away before for a customer who wanted 40kg of bird seed. So we’ll always try and be as accommodating as possible for anyone struggling or who needs extra help, ( I know this isn’t the case everywhere) this is more me being about people not then reciprocating that on the flip side I need to do my job so it’s totally reasonable to need to say what’s in your bag from the store .
DanielleBun@reddit
No, because it 100% would alert the staff that you are a potential shoplifter and they’d follow you until you were finished going through the tills. I don’t want to be followed around if I can help it.
LichenTheMood@reddit
I must just have that face because they have always followed me. Even before I wasn’t able to carry the baskets.
Spanner1993@reddit
Its absolutely an old people thing, don't be a jobsworth in this situation, its not worth the agro on either side of the exchange.
Personally, I wouldn't do it unless I was scanning as I went.
becca413g@reddit
I’m sight impaired so I don’t drive and I also can’t lift much weight due to another health condition. For me I always put stuff in my own bag because not only will it hurt others less than a basket if I bump into them I can easily tell how much it all weighs and if it will fit into my bag. I always demonstrate my bag has been emptied at the till by checking with my hands and then scrunching the bag up and I’m happy for anyone to inspect my bag to ensure I’ve emptied it all out. It’s so much easier with a soft bag on my arm than trying to shop with a basket or trolley when I’ve also got a cane in one hand and a phone to read out writing on products in the other. While also trying to hold the product ect. I need a second pair of hands! Well truly a new optic nerve would help as well! 🤣 I don’t care if people think I’m stealing because I’m not. I’m just trying to do things as comfortably and safely as I can.
nhema94@reddit
It’s Greyhaired Criminals. Allegedly because “I don’t understand this newfangled technology, what do you mean Scanning? What’s a scammer?” 😉😆
Petrichor_ness@reddit
I'm late 30s and Lidl is my closest supermarket. They only have large wheel baskets which I don't like using so if I'm only going in to grab some weekend pastries or a few fresh bits for a salad, they're going straight into my canvas shopping bag.
Helena_Handcart1@reddit
I do it in Lidl, partly because those blue wheely baskets are FILTHY (I’m not putting my food in there) but mostly because sure I’ve been shopping there ever since they first opened on the UK and didn’t provide baskets. It was trolley or nothing. It’s a habit that’s stuck and I’ve been prepared to defend doing it if ever challenged. I use only an empty (when starting) reusable shopping bag, you know, those cuboid shaped ones which are nearly the size of a small suitcase, to make it clear that I’m not trying to hide anything.
Plum_Tea@reddit
Not often, but I did a few times when they were no trollies and I had my own trolley bag for a bigger shop. I felt a bit uncomfortable, but I did it as conspicuously as possible, so it is obvious that this is just me shopping and not stealing. I wouldn't do it as a habit though and certainly wouldn't put it in my handbag with my other stuff, that feels dodgy and maybe a bit rude? Like you feel entitled to everything and payment is just an afterthought. Also don't do the "eat in shop, pay at the till" thing, it's also rude in my view, if it's the norm, rather than an exception (eg. an overwhelmed parent going along with a child grabbing something).
Both are divations and transgressions of the rules and codes that operate in the shops, but neither is illegal. It's ok to do it if you must, but not really ok to do it as a habit, because if everyone does it, the shop order goes to sh*t, staff will struggle to know who is stealing and who is not, and generally you are showing yourself as a person who thinks rules don't apply to them and you are special because you are entitled to flex the rules and nobody will notice/ care. Well each such activity adds extra load to the staff's load -because they now have to look at all these handbag people to make sure they pay.
SpudFire@reddit
Only when using scan and go at Sainsburys, but then it would be weird to not put items in your bag. Any other time and I'd be worried staff will accuse me of shoplifting, even if I'm only using it as a makeshift basket.
If you're using your shopping bag it doesn't seem too bad but using a handbag looks really dodgy. Even doing scan and go, using a handbag would be odd unless you've put it in your trolley.
broadarrow39@reddit
I do it all the time, store security don't like it. I've been stopped and asked what I'm doing a few times, last time I told the guy I'm not paying for a basket. He just looked really confused and walked off. If account holders and scan as you go shoppers are doing it then so am I.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
I mean yeah , well he will be confused 😂
Mammoth-Passion-413@reddit
My son always tells the guard first that due to dexterity problems he has to use a bag as he can't hold a basket or push a trolley- and he does not mind being watched. He would be skinned alive if he ever stole.
Some people need to - but they are always the ones who are upfront about it.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah this makes perfect sense and anyone that ever mentions anything like that I’m like absolutely fine and let me know if you need me to carry anything! We do carry customers items to cars regularly as I say it’s a warehouse so we sell some large heavy items!
DoubleXFemale@reddit
No, because any staff who spot you doing it (unless it’s scan as you shop) will think you’re potentially sketchy.
I bet lot of people doing this at larger stores cause chatter on the headsets about “middle-aged man, yellow top”, end up with managers popping up in the same aisles as them and the self-checkout worker watching them like a hawk, never even realising the brief excitement they’ve caused.
TheLittleChikk@reddit
I currently live in North America where putting items into your shopping bags is normal! Makes life easier at the till :) it felt weird at first, but hey, when in Rome.
SdanoG@reddit
Thought about this recently, normally our shopping gets delivered, however I was tempted to go get lollies a couple of times recently and thought, that rather than my basket falling off my walker (Rollator) just plonk the items inside the seat bag until I got to the tills, not done it yet but have considered it….. aged 56
Glum_Sherbet_5413@reddit
I used to put things in my shopping bag then carry that to the till. Fuck knows why. Eventually someone pointed out to me that it looked suspicious and I stopped doing it.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yea I think because in people’s heads if they know they’re not stealing like but what’s the problem. But when you work in a shop it just makes it awks/ difficult as I say I do not work in a chain, it’s an independent so we’re slightly more invested in keeping the stock 😭😂. Also there’s not just one ‘look’ to people who shop lift so some people may think but ‘do I look like a shoplifter’ and it’s like ? Maybe ? I’ve known people to be shoplifters who are middle class and have nice cars etc.
deadeyes1990@reddit
I get why people do it, especially if they’ve forgotten a basket or only meant to grab a couple of bits. But in a small shop it does put staff in an awkward position, because they don’t know if you’re about to pay or just wander out with half the bird seed aisle in your tote. It’s not exactly a crime of the century situation, but just use a basket until you’ve paid. Saves everyone the weirdness.
Sure-Recognition-262@reddit
No of course not, with one exception: if the shop provides beep-as-you-go handsets then I'll dispense with the basket and place the things that I've scanned straight into my bag.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah this would make perfect sense!
Jolly-Avocado0@reddit
If i have an empty shopping bag and suddenly need a basket in the middle of the shop, ive used the bag as a basket so I don't drop stuff everywhere, but i do try to make it obvious that I'm not trying to steal!
Existing_Doughnut985@reddit
This is how I shop everywhere. I don’t use a basket I just put everything into my bag for life and then empty it at the checkout
I think it helps me to only buy what I need and it’s just easier
Never been an issue for me. Local Iceland did put up signs asking shoppers not to put stuff into their bag until paid for but nobody ever said anything to me when I carry on doing it my way 🤷♂️
Prof_Hentai@reddit
Interesting topic, and one I have quite a divisive view on.
Since we are now encouraged to bring our own bags, I just load straight into my shopping bags as I do not want an extra thing to carry. It also ensures I do not buy more than I can carry. I sometimes get some funny looks, but it’s more convenient. It’s not my job to prove I’m not stealing, it’s securities job to prove I am.
toastandjam97@reddit (OP)
Yeah as I say I don’t work in a chain store so we don’t have security guards.
SongsAboutGhosts@reddit
I'd never do it with a handbag. I might do it with an actual shopping bag since I know I'm going to unload the whole bag at the till, though I'm not sure I've ever done it because I'm going to unpack it all again so might as well use a basket then only load the bag once I've paid. Unless scan as you go, of course, in which case it makes total sense to pack as you go around (though I'd likely have bags in the trolley and pack into there, not just holding a bag).
Obvious-Water569@reddit
On the rare occasion I remember to take my own reusable shopping bag, then yeah. I use that as my basket.
DiscoDoberman@reddit
Shopping bags - all the time.
I use my bags instead of baskets.
Also if I'm buying fridge/freezer stuff, straight into a cool bag, zip it up.
And if you're doing a big shop then putting some stuff into bags can make it eaiser to do the trolley jenga/keep households separated.
