Why do so many Balkan people smoke?

Almost every Turkish, Bosnian, Monotonegran and Albanian (from Kosovo) person I know are heavy smokers.

compared to the opioid addiction in the US, or the alcoholism in northern Europe, i much prefer the smoking in the Balkans, even if i dont smoke

Stress.. but seriously, we just recently banned smoking indoors. I remember even teachers smoking on hallways and some even in class in University. Mostly I think it’s because the governments aren’t doing enough to stop smoking, bacause of the big tobacco lobby.

I watched a western drama where the whole tragedy was about someone having a ptsd. Well, brother, ptsd used to be as comon as a flu in Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia. So ... you may as well ask why don't we eat cakes (instead of bread)

Culture, permissive environment, addiction. Many countries in EU have been able to eradicate smoking via legislation. Balkans say no to such. Though it has gotten little better at least in Bulgaria (food restaurants limit it to outdoors).

Yeah, it’s crazy how hard drugs seem to be a much bigger problem in the west than they are here. Not saying the problem doesn’t exist, but much less visible in city centres at least.

Given that I'm by now old, lol, I'd never have thought that 30-40% would be headline-grabbing percentages. This is actually cool to witness. As to why, well, it's an addiction. Those are tough to shake.
