Colin Allred defeats Julie Johnson in redistricting-driven runoff battle of Dallas Democrats

I don’t understand the irrational fear of those on the Right and Left of governing from the middle. Republicans look at their candidates and think “I wish they would move further to the right” and Democrats look at their candidates and think “I wish they would move further to the left.” As an independent, I’m always looking for the candidate that promises to move away their party’s platform and base and towards the center of the aisle, which is why I’ve always admired politicians like Allred. He actually cares about his country and constituents and not just blind party loyalty.

How is it hard to understand “I want a candidate that best represents my values” would be a popular sentiment?
EastTXJosh@reddit
Because, as the Rolling Stones taught us, “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need.”
youngpathfinder@reddit
I’m under no illusion that the person I vote for is always going to win, but why would I not still support that kind of candidate? Why would I compromise my values to appease some amorphous middle?
EastTXJosh@reddit
Refusing to appeal to the middle is how we end up where we are now, one side licking the boots of fascists, Nazis, and Christian nationalists and the other side courting Bolsheviks, Hamas, and other fringe lunatics.
We were a better country when we had Reagan and Tip O’Neil working together, with Bill Clinton’s pragmatism, with mavericks like John McCain willing to hold their party’s radical wing in check.

Allred does not care about me, a trans woman, or any other trans person. Fuck Allred and any other "center" politician for the same reason.
Pandering to the middle only opens the door to bigots playing both sides

I voted for Johnson, but while I can't speak to Allred's personal feelings his voting record has been positive for trans folk. He opposed anti-trans bills like the 2023 one to restrict trans athletes, bathroom bills, and he cosponsored the Equality Act. The only clear failing I see is that he talked around the question in a debate with Cruz in a noncommittal way.
Staunch public ally? Not really, but we're still better off with him than we were with Sessions whom he unseated (actual racist, up to insanity as a rep in Waco now). I have plenty of criticism for the guy, but he's a vast improvement from Republicans in this state. And we can be mad at Allred for displacing Johnson until we're blue in the face, but it was Republicans that put them in this position to begin with.

Allred has several quotes walking back support for trans youth and trans sports issues. Very similar to what Gavin Newson is doing right now leading up to his bid for president. Fuck Gavin too btw.
Trans people are Republicans favorite punching bag these days and meeting them in the middle of their hatred is unexpectable.
Johnson was not perfect but far better than Allred imo. Allred sucks but not as much as Sessoins and so on.
I'm now pissed because now I feel forced to vote for a rep whom I personally do not think deserves it.
wjackson42@reddit
Allred might not care about you, but republicans want you dead. You don’t have to vote for the lesser of two evils if that’s your conviction, but I can’t vote for the party that wants trans people dead and I’m not convicted to waste my vote on a third party. I’d vote for a centrist democrat over the alternative any day of the week if that’s my only option.

I’m going to give you some support here. If all we elect in each party is extremists and radicals, we will have ineffective government. I do not believe every citizen is extreme. And I want leaders who represent their constituents well. Including those that didn’t vote for them.

It was a choice between two turds. He’s a spineless corp dem who is all about ICE and she’s all about Israel. Disappointed that we even had to choose between them.

SassGoblin@reddit

Proving once again that Reddit does not hold the majority view.
bigbugzman@reddit
I’m in my 3rd different district since I voted for this turd when he won against Pete Sessions. I haven’t moved just got gerrymandered to hell.
VictoryGreen@reddit
Johnson has a solid record. Allred doesn’t. Sucks but it is what it is. APAC money is really working well this election season
Snobolski@reddit
Allred has done at least one good thing: unseating Pete Sessions.
Maybe he's been resting on his laurels since then? We moved out of his district shortly after that election.
_TakeMyUpvote_@reddit
yeah. he was an empty suit in that district and then tried to run for Senate and lost. yes he beat Sessions, but all he had to do to win that race was quietly show up. after he won? nothing. still quiet.

Fake democrate collin allred
Hes a fetterman light.
Swiper817@reddit
Welcome back Congressman Milquetoast. Glad to know we’ll be represented by a spineless liar again
Greenmantle22@reddit
That’s okay. Julie can run again in two years when he decides he wants to run for yet another random higher office.
This dick’s ambition far outstrips his ability. He was a lousy congressman, but he very much loves the spotlight.
MemoryOfRagnarok@reddit
How many people voted for Allred just because they recognize his name? He is a wet rag, centrist.
bigbugzman@reddit
This dude is jock itch
qolace@reddit
Great 🙄
Leader_Bud@reddit
Sad. He shouldn’t have run and just supported her. Greed and power are a powerful drug.

Former Rep. Colin Allred defeated his successor in Congress, Rep. Julie Johnson, in the Democratic runoff to represent Texas’ Dallas-centered congressional district, according to the Associated Press.
The Democrats were forced into an unusual race between predecessor and successor after Republicans redrew Texas’ district map to boost GOP chances to maintain congressional control.
The 32nd District, which Johnson currently represents and Allred previously represented, is now solidly Republican, pushing Johnson into the left-leaning 33rd District that Kamala Harris would have won by more than 30 points — had its boundaries existed in 2024.
District 33 contains about a third of the residents from the candidates’ former congressional district and is currently represented by Rep. Marc Veasey, who decided not to seek reelection.
Allred, a civil rights lawyer and former professional football player, first served in Congress from 2019 to 2025 after unseating 11-term Republican Pete Sessions. He left his seat to run for Senate against Ted Cruz and lost decisively in the 2024 midterms.

2024 wasn’t a midterm election. It was a presidential election.

He’s a turd

Hey Jasmine’s campaign worked for something. I guess she’ll campaign for her in the general too.
