Which 90s or 2000s album cover art was so incredibly bizarre or low-effort that you can't believe a major label approved it?

Personally Chumbawamba is a big ol pile of WTF.
TragicHedgehog@reddit
I wouldn’t say low effort. But bizarre enough that I’d feel confident it wouldn’t have existed outside the bubble of the 90’s.
BijouWilliams@reddit
This was basic and yet incredibly controversial where I lived when it first came out.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Disagreed, this album cover is very good at telling the listener what to expect in the album
MechanicalDruid@reddit
Music that's aged like unpasteurized milk with notes of stainless steel and piercing cheese. Yeah, that checks out.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Just listened to it coming home from camping this weekend!
Aerosmith was definitely hair metal cheese that had no business being big in the 90s, but it was!
MechanicalDruid@reddit
I was 9 when it came out. It was one of the first albums I owned and I could probably recite the lyrics to every song with 80% accuracy to this day. I may still have it in storage.
I did listen to it a few months back and there was a large cringe factor so some songs but they still are well played, well produced and catchy songs. The fame and popularity makes sense cause they were just a little more unique in their delivery when compared to hair bands that didn't make it in the 90s.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
It's definitely cringe because Aerosmith was old back then and we all knew it!
seamusfurr@reddit
In retrospect, awful

I have a natural hatred towards rock bands who put their faces on album covers but this one especially sucks.

Even Human Clay was really bad.

My wife ate a bowl of dogfood at the Survivor season 1 finale party to win Pearl Jam tickets. She came on 2nd place and won Creed tickets as a consolation prize then got beat up at the concert by a drunk girl.
She hates Creed now too

Is this so bad? It looks super standard for that kind of pop instrumentalist album. Picture, simple text. I don't think the text box is optimal design, but it's simple at least.
cityfireguy@reddit
It's Kenny G, what do people expect? Should there be an explosion on the cover somewhere?

I don't hate this. It's super 90s, clearly, and a weird image choice in general, but the design doesn't hurt my eyes like some of the other 90's collage/MS Paint-text-art nonsense.

1deadeye1@reddit
I adore Mike Doughty, but I also think he's what you get when a "potatoes are funny" guy happens to be a brilliant musician
No_Ratio1493@reddit
I think I read in his book that he hated this cover art. (He hated a lot of things.) One reason is that the guy with glasses on it is the bassist. It was an extension of the idea that no one person in the band is more important than the other, which Mike disagreed with as he wrote all the songs. But the rest of the band framed it as Mike bringing in little ideas for songs that they built on.
Chadopolis@reddit
Haha great album, but also a great addition to OPs premise

The hideous gradients on the lettering is so bad.

In high school in the 90s I started messing with 3D software that a friend had cracked. We would create dumb shit like dice on fire and all the basics that you could just click around with. Then in the early 2000s went to school for Graphic Design. Looking at all of these covers makes me realise just how influenced all of us were by these. People I went to college with were making stuff like this all the time for their projects. I didn't realise it all felt really specific to this time.

I think the winner for low effort is Chris Isaak's Forever Blue.
The story goes:
He took the money label had for the cover and told them he'd take care of it.
He bought a relatively cheap camera, then paid a kid on the street $50 to take a picture of him standing next to his car.
He he just pocketed the other couple thousand dollars that had been earmarked for the photo shoot.
I think it's a rad cover.
If the story is true, or if Chris Isaak made up the story for the interview, I don't know. I thought it was kind of funny though.
