I was 9 when it came out. It was one of the first albums I owned and I could probably recite the lyrics to every song with 80% accuracy to this day. I may still have it in storage.

I did listen to it a few months back and there was a large cringe factor so some songs but they still are well played, well produced and catchy songs. The fame and popularity makes sense cause they were just a little more unique in their delivery when compared to hair bands that didn't make it in the 90s.

I think I read in his book that he hated this cover art. (He hated a lot of things.) One reason is that the guy with glasses on it is the bassist. It was an extension of the idea that no one person in the band is more important than the other, which Mike disagreed with as he wrote all the songs. But the rest of the band framed it as Mike bringing in little ideas for songs that they built on.

In high school in the 90s I started messing with 3D software that a friend had cracked. We would create dumb shit like dice on fire and all the basics that you could just click around with. Then in the early 2000s went to school for Graphic Design. Looking at all of these covers makes me realise just how influenced all of us were by these. The computer-generated cover art was provided by David Patchett, who asked for his name to be removed from the album's credits after the band decided to use an unfinished version. The album cover was received negatively by both fans and critics, being cited on numerous "worst of" lists.Dickinson later stated he found the cover embarrassing. Simon Young of Kerrang! said of the cover artwork: "Remember when Ally McBeal used to have hallucinations of a poorly animated dancing baby? Here it is at some sort of mask party hosted by Eddie." Joe DaVita of Loudwire said the artwork "looks like an unfinished high school graphic design project."

The original cover art supposedly featured only Eddie and a few monks behind him but the band manager Rod Smallwood felt it looked empty, so he hired someone from IronMaiden.com to design characters surrounding Eddie using the program Poser. They then gave the roughs back to Patchett and asked him to work on the skin and mask textures. Patchett did so but was unimpressed with the result.

I think the winner for low effort is Chris Isaak's Forever Blue.

The story goes:

He took the money label had for the cover and told them he'd take care of it.

He bought a relatively cheap camera, then paid a kid on the street $50 to take a picture of him standing next to his car.

He he just pocketed the other couple thousand dollars that had been earmarked for the photo shoot.

I think it's a rad cover.

If the story is true, or if Chris Isaak made up the story for the interview, I don't know. I thought it was kind of funny though.

I think what I love most about this community is how music-centric it is, and how excited people get about it and how far into the weeds weeds they take it with posts like this. There’s stuff like this posted here all the time and I love it. Way less on the millennials sub and in Gen Z… it’s not there at all.

Anything Lords of Acid? I dont know if they're on a major label, but Voodoo U and Crablouse had very sexual covers. The Pussy single was cute. Farstucker was more friendly, but yeah, crazy covers they had to censor for USA merch/albums. Love them.
