Grover's hold on second-born kids (and former kids)
Posted by Madavis2u@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 239 comments
GenXers -- Submitted for your consideration is a hypothesis I've been developing over the last 20 years about Sesame's (self-described) cute, adorable, and fuzzy character, Do any of you see yourselves in Grover?
Bastard1066@reddit
I'm the second and baby of the family, and so is Grover. I'm sure of it.
Worth-Advertising@reddit
I was Bert. I could admit it then. I was just way too serious. I still am sometimes but I try to remind myself to lighten up.
LadyNorbert@reddit
Always loved Grover, but Big Bird was always my favorite, with Oscar a close second. They were like the two sides of my personality.

I might, what's it about?
AbsolutesDealer@reddit
Elmo can’t hold a candle to Grover, but I’ve always felt a kinship with Gonzo more than any of Henson’s Sesame Street crew.
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
I'm a Gonzo fan, as well. He steals the show, as in his ballad in "The Muppet Movie."
AbsolutesDealer@reddit
Gonzo is the duality of man.
JitteryTurtle@reddit
I had a Grover puppet back in the day. I did the voice pretty good. We had a camper van with a dinette in the back. The back doors had two tinted windows that would flip out from the bottom. On long boring stretches of traveling, I would stick the puppet out under the window. His long arms flapping about. It made the cars behind us crack up. I always looked for cars with a bunch of kids. Fun times!
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Thanks so much for sharing this. What a picture I now have in my mind. I. too, do a fair Grover, although it can recall Yoda. I'd say I try, but there is no try. Do or not do, right?
JitteryTurtle@reddit
I should add, that I was second born, youngest son. Missed that with my original post.
A few years ago my older brother gifted me a copy of “Monster at the end of the Book” which he knew I loved as a kid.

I worked at sesame place (Sesame Street themed park) and I was always so mad I was too broad shouldered to be Grover in costume. I talked them into it once and nearly sweated my ass off because it was so tight on me.

1st born - Oscar, Cookie, Count & Ernie were my favorites on Sesame. Honorable mentions: Barkley, Slimey, The Martians, and The Twiddlebugs.
Bonus round: Favorite Muppet is Fozzie. Honorable mentions: Swedish Chef, Statler & Waldorf, Animal, Beaker, and Rowlf.
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Hi-ho, there. Any room for Kermit?
RealityDependency@reddit
As an adult, I see Kermit as the anchor character. I have love for him, but he was never a favorite. Yet, somehow, Rainbow Connection is etched into my soul.
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
In my view, Kermit singing in the swamp (accompanying himself on banjo) is one of the great opening scenes in movie history, The song ranks high, as well, right up there with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as cinema's greatest,
Tasty_Heron_7219@reddit
Yes 👏 but Kermit’s true song will always be “It’s Not Easy Being Green.”
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Written by the great Joe Raposo, who plays a major role in my Sesame origin story, "Street Gang," published in 2009 but still available as a Penguin paperback.

Super Grover, and Grover's explanation of near and far will live with me forever

Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Thanks so much for sharing this. It affirms my hypothesis.
SebrinePastePlaydoh@reddit
I kid you not, our family heirloom is a Super Grover puppet
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Super cool.
Cazzuta323@reddit
I felt very Grover as a kid--only child, single over-educated mom. I was goofy, weird, energetic, and loud.
I'm kind of the same at 52, just less energetic.
Tasty_Heron_7219@reddit
I loved Grover. You felt for him and you felt like him whenever he goofed something up. Who doesn’t goof up? Best part is that he always kept on going despite his mistakes.
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Classic second-born behavior.
auntiecrow@reddit

My sister loved him. She was a 2nd child. I think he was the Gen X version of Elmo, but I always preferred snuffy and Oscar!
BuckyGoldman@reddit
Snuffleupagus is my spirit Muppet, but I always had room at my table for Grover. I remember helping him be brave for facing the monster at the end of the book.
Krazeecatlady69@reddit
My favorite book when I was little!
PleasedPeas@reddit
I don’t see myself as Grover, but I can relate completely. I’m 55 and I love Grover today as much as I did when I was a kid.
elizajaneredux@reddit
I always identified with Grover - loving and smart, with a good heart, but misunderstood and completely neurotic. Absolutely loved him. Hated Snuffleupagus’ googy-goody personality!
Cyphermoon699@reddit
Old enough to remember the very origins of Grover being my favorite, raising my little sisters through it and then my daughter. He's still my favorite and my Boston terrier is named Grover in homage!
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Thanks so much for adding this comment. Is Grover a good boy?
Cyphermoon699@reddit
He is a sweet lovable furry old 🥰Grover
BeginningNobody4812@reddit
These days, I feel like cookie monster due to the fact that I can't eat just one.
But growing up, Grover was one of my favorites. The lessons, his role as the waiter, etc... were always fun.

katwoodruff@reddit
I just know he was my favorite, and I am the second born.
In Germany he is called Grobi - and I loved Super-Grobi.
goosebittentwiceshy@reddit
Oh absolutely. His anxiety over the monster at the end of the book and his lack of patience with the diner who complained all the time. Yet he is SuperGrover. Like, he’s my mental health all in one muppet
hughiesghost@reddit
Grover has been my favorite forever.
Themoosemingled@reddit
Super Grover always.
The song he does with Dave Matthew’s makes me cry every time. My friend can fly and I wish I could too. My wish to go to the moon in a rocket didn’t come true.
I feel both of these deeply now.
The choices I made that took me into a profession I left and the time I lost. What I thought I’d have.
I’m a chaos muppet. I feel deeply. Grover is my main monster. I’m still trying to fly.
SmearingFeces@reddit

As the oldest of three boys, I genuinely identified with Kermit as a child. I understood what Kermit was as doing wrangling a bunch of lunatics everyday. As a 50 year old man, I now know that I’m much more in line with Dr Teeth.

As the oldest I also identified with Kermit. Pragmatic, responsible…

cvaldez74@reddit
Such a fun book to read to kids!
wildcat_crazy_zebra@reddit
I'm an only/oldest - blended family after 10yo - and my guys are Cookie Monster & Animal. I remember in 1st grade I had a Cookie Monster jacket that had googlie eyes attached to the pocket. That and my Mork & Mindy metal lunchbox kept me company.
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Cookie and Animal are Freudian fellows, in that they both are projections of the id. They gotta have what they gotta have, whether that's chocolate chippies or frightened women,
wildcat_crazy_zebra@reddit
That's interesting... My default is to deprioritize my own wants and push them off for as long as possible before giving in. But when I do give in there's a tendency to be all Cookie Animal about it but that's really rare.
Compensatory much methinks. Interesting little project! I dig it.

Interesting theory. I’m first born and don’t really identify with Grover.
Upper_Economist7611@reddit
Second born kid here. I always related more to Oscar the Grouch. But I’ve absolutely had my share of Grover moments!
Madavis2u@reddit (OP)
Oscar is the character many connect with in adulthood, after experiencing bad bosses, annoying neighbors, rude customer service agents, and on. We don't hate them. There's no good in that. But we have to put up with them, as the those on the Street accept Oscar. In my 2009 book, "Street Gang," I explain the character's origin and raison d'etre.
arieljagr@reddit
I am a first born and do NOT identify with Grover, if that helps! Even though I am a Chaos Muppet.
