Which one of a hundred names do you call it?

Hey my fellow broke ass Xennials. What was this called growing up? I have heard probably over a dozen different names and none of them are the same as what my parents called it. Whatchu got?
mikek313@reddit
If you’d lose the ketchup and replace with a slice of cheese it’d be “gas house eggs”
keepermafia@reddit
Alabama eggs since they're in bread
SnooHesitations9447@reddit
Here in the south, they are called chicks in a basket or lesser used chicks in a nest.
bassydebeste@reddit
Gross
No-Championship-8677@reddit
Me: what the fuck is that 😂
ShogunFirebeard@reddit
You cut a hole in the center of some bread slices, then you pan fry and egg inside that hole. You end up with toast with an egg in the center. I've always known it as eggie in a basket.
mightysockelf@reddit
Now that you've explained it, I can now see that there are eggs there. Before I was like, "Who the fuck is trying to name ketchup covered toast with a side of silver dollar pancakes"
Expensive_Air965@reddit
That's exactly what I thought. I was so confused. I did not see the eggs there at first at all. I was like toast with ketchup and hash browns. Why would you eat a plate of carbs with ketchup?
mightysockelf@reddit
My little sister grew up eating ketchup sandwiches, and her son does the same thing, so from my POV it is not so out of the ordinary 🙃
HopelessMagic@reddit
So, French toast with extra steps?
the__ghola__hayt@reddit
How the hell are you making french toast? Stay away from my breakfast table.
HopelessMagic@reddit
It's egg and bread cooked together just in a different way. My comment stands.
Expensive_Air965@reddit
Sure, if you don't use milk or cinnamon or nutmeg or sugar or any of the other things that go into French toast that make it absolutely delicious
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
the__ghola__hayt@reddit
If you want trash french toast, sure.
HopelessMagic@reddit
I did mention the extra steps, right?
the__ghola__hayt@reddit
Your original comment was saying that cutting a hole in the bread and frying the egg in the hole are the extra steps added to making french toast, unless you count removing all other ingredients that make it french toast as the extra steps too.
HopelessMagic@reddit
I never said those were the extra steps made. 😂
Spirited_Ingenuity89@reddit
Not remotely.
Anadelyn@reddit
Seems like it would work better to just fry an egg and put it on a slice of toast.
Expensive_Air965@reddit
No, it is completely different when you cook the egg into the toasts. That way it tastes like magic. That's the only way I can explain it
prollyaporkchop@reddit
You forgot butter. The most important part is butter in the pan
Remarkable_Term631@reddit
I butter both sides of the bread - like grilled cheese
CorwinAlexander@reddit
Do you do it before removing the hole, or after? I, personally can't stand the butter getting everywhere trying to remove the hole after, so I struggle to hold the less structurally sound slice with a hole in it
AggravatingSignal129@reddit
Yes, thank you. This is absolutely the key.
FreddyNoodles@reddit
The egg is supposed to be med fried, “dippy”… or so I was always told anyway by my very young children who learned this from their northern Indiana grandma. They used the circles to dip. OR sometimes they used the crust yo dip and the little circles were tiny french toast that better be on their own plate because that syrup is NOT touching the mfing dippy eggs.
I would have had a full mutiny if I had even waved the ketchup bottle by the plate.
Marie-and-Twanette@reddit
Same. Grew up poor, only had cereal for breakfast.
Expensive_Air965@reddit
Cereal is expensive. A dozen eggs and a loaf of bread goes a lot farther and has more nutrients
Marie-and-Twanette@reddit
There’s more to it than the cost. There were six people in my family, so a dozen eggs would be gone in one go, the bread would be for dinner, and the cereal came in big family sized boxes, lasted longer, and didn’t require any effort from a parent, that had to work most most of the day.
Expensive_Air965@reddit
As far as time consumption goes that makes sense. If I had four kids I wouldn't be making hot breakfast every morning either .But monetarily It's still more effective and more nutritious to do the toad in a hole
Marie-and-Twanette@reddit
That’s just not true, a box of cereal was still very cheaply, and goes further than a carton of eggs and a loaf of bread, especially because bread and eggs are used in other meals.
TransportationOk657@reddit
My thought as well! Never had this served to me and never saw anyone eat this.
Otisthedog999@reddit
I never knew about it until I was about 40 years old. New friend made them for breakfast and called them ' hole in the walls'. I thought it was a cute name but wondered why the best part of the bread was removed.
mac117@reddit
I’ve never seen this before. I’m Italian-American. Our broke-ass food was just pasta with butter

RailroadAllStar@reddit
Guess I never graduated to ketchup. I’d fry an egg and throw it on a piece of toast with a ton of black pepper and some cheese. Never ketchup though
embiate@reddit
Black pepper all over a fried egg and toast hits
glazedfaith@reddit
Never understood why you'd want to cut the middle out of the bread rather than add the egg on top.
sleepybirdl71@reddit
Because it's fun
illegal_fiction@reddit
Because the egg fries into the bread and creates a different dish, it’s not the same as a fried egg on top of a piece of toast. Anymore than scrambled eggs are the same as an omelette. Both the bread and eggs are different. The fried cut out circle is the best part.
moosifer_the_foul@reddit
I guess I'm white trash but omelets tasted different cause I put stuff in them I don't put in a scrambled egg. That is just salt and pepper. Maybe cheese.
PopEnvironmental1250@reddit
You forgot the best part, using the little toast circle to break open the runny yolk. That's the real key.
nomowolf@reddit
Persuasively put
AgentCatBot@reddit
So you can fry the egg without it running all over the place and the bread soaks up the rest.
sertraline_dreams@reddit
This. Wtf do you do with the middle of the bread?!
AuntAmrys@reddit
I think that's them at the bottom of the plate, though at first I thought they were some off-color sausages.

dadlyphe@reddit
Same, does your wife add Greek seasoning?
Mine does and it’s tasty!

No. But I’ll make that suggestion. I like to throw some cheese on it. And I use jam on the circle toast

With that ketchup I completely agree.
rinky79@reddit
The ketchup is a war crime. I love one-eyed sandwiches and still make them.
RobinSophie@reddit
Exactly.
We would have a fried egg sandwich with some ketchup and if my grandma was feeling up to it some homemade fries.
min_mus@reddit
Same here. I've never seen this meal in my life.
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
Same, I wouldn't eat that if you paid me
glazedfaith@reddit
Wow that's amazingly dramatic, unless you're deathly allergic to eggs in which case I apologize, but that would likely have changed your response.
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
Wow you sure like making assumptions, I have a condition called ARFID that makes it so I physically cannot swallow food, so how about you not be like that, hm?
PhantoWolf@reddit
Its just a piece of buttered bread toasted in a pan with an egg.
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
I dont like fried eggs
PhantoWolf@reddit
Definitely not for you then.
Still... You wouldn't eat eggs for money? haha
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit

Yay, finally someone else that calls it egg in a nest. I had to scroll way too far through so many other ridiculous names. 😊
Agree with you about the ketchup too.
railmanmatt@reddit
Right?! My mom called them (as do I) eggs in a nest. I'm from SE PA.

He’s originally from Belen, New Mexico. Not sure if that’s where he got the name tho.
My mom is originally from Long Beach, Ca. She’s always called them Egg in a Basket or Bird Nest Eggs.

I’m Ohio born, but a quarter of my family is from eastern PA.
badwolf42@reddit
Kinda torn but probably wet bottom. The best shoofly pies come from menonite stands along the road where most of them only speak Pennsylvania Dutch.
WarpTenSalamander@reddit
Um excuse you, the best shoofly pies come from my grandma’s kitchen while my Pappy curses at me and my cousins in Pennsylvania Dutch.
Or at least they did, I guess we need to pass that torch on now that they’re both gone. Welp, guess I’ve got some Pennsylvania Dutch to learn!

I'd probably skip the ketchup here, and splatter a bit of Cholula over the top instead.
I usually add a hearty squirt of catsup to my scrambled eggs though. I dunk grilled cheeses in the shit, and stripe my hotdogs with it as well..
Why does everyone seem to have such a throbbing hate boner for ketchup, I don't understand it lol

Egg in a hole.
But you need to go to the next level now; here me out.
You make two these can keep them on a low heat pan so they stay warm; or in the oven on a low heat like you would with a stack of pancakes or french toast.
Next you make some bacon to your desired state of bacon cookedness.
Strain most of the bacon fat out of the pan, or keep it all for some extra greasyness if that's what you like.
Now put the egg in the holes back in cooking pan, grate some cheese (I cheat pre-grated 3 cheese mixed bag) on the face up sides and let it melt a bit on top, but the bacon strips on one, flip the other on top and make yourself an Egg in the hole Bacon Cheese Sandwich.
BE WARNED THIS IS A MESSY FOOD.

Pbmcsteve@reddit (OP)
Eggs fried inside a piece of bread.
CloseButNoChicory@reddit
Cool! How is the bread wrapped around the egg? Or is it an egg that's rolled around in breadcrumbs and fried after?
Pbmcsteve@reddit (OP)
Butter both sides of bread, use rim of glass or biscuit cutter to cut circle out of bread. Put bread in hot pan and crack egg in hole. Flip when appropriate.
CloseButNoChicory@reddit
Oh, so the disclike things aren't eggs at all, they're circles of bread cut from the toast?
I presume when you say butter both sides of bread you mean butter both sides of toast. There's no way the bread in that photo hasn't been toasted.
Pbmcsteve@reddit (OP)
It was toasted in the pan with the eggs. At least that’s how I do it.
CloseButNoChicory@reddit
Wow, it really looks like it's been toasted. Anyway, thanks for the explanation. I got downvoted in an earlier comment for asking what the discs were. Shame on me for being curious about other cuisines I suppose.

Munchkin531@reddit
You butter a slice of bread, cut a hole in the bread, crack an egg in it, and fry it/season it as you like. You also cook the bread circle. I've found cooking it on my gridle is the most effective way. I like to add a slice of bacon or 2 and cheese to mine!

Toad in a hole for me, my wife grew up calling them gas house eggs

Hahaha. Yup. Grew up broke with young parents that could barely cook. They’re awesome cooks now. Fucking niece and nephew have no idea how good they have it.

Egg in a hat. The little bread circles are the hats, you put them on top of the egg. Duh.
Ent_Trip_Newer@reddit
I grew up in suburban Detroit and we made a lot of breakfast. I never saw or heard of this until a friend who married a gal from Georgia made it for us. She called it Toad in a Hole.
Ok_Researcher_9796@reddit
My ex-wife introduced it to me, but as frog in a hole. She's from Jacksonville, Florida which isn't too far from Georgia.
sarabeara12345678910@reddit
I also grew up in suburban Detroit and we had this often. Called it a humperdink, but I think that was just my weird family.

I call it the wrong was to make eggs on toast. The correct way is to fry the eggs in a pan, gently shaping them to be the exact same shape as your slice of bread, such that when you place the egg on the toast, the entire slice is covered with eggy goodness. None of this pigs in a basket nonsense.

I don't understand why there's a minor sea of suspiciously dark looking ketchup on those, but in my house cutting out the middle of a piece of bread and then cooking an egg in that empty space so that it fuses with the bread is called Eggs in a Basket.
Minute_Scar5425@reddit
