I would like to put a red dot sight on one of my handguns.

Hey my 2A loving buddies. As from the title I would like to attach a red dot to some of my pistols. As some of you know I live in lovely commiefornia so none of my handguns came optic ready. Is it pretty easy to slap on an adapter plate for the red dot to fit snugly? Or is this something I would have to take to a gun smith.? Im thinkin of putting one on my GX2 or my springfeild xd. Mod 1 (4 inch barrel). And what brands are legit?. Im looking at vector atm. Holosun is pricey af. Any help would be great. Thanks for reading. You guys are ta ta ta tight!

What is your budget? I love my Leupold Delta Point Pro on my HK USP Tactical. There are ready made adapter plates for this optic on this pistol so only required a little bit of gunsmithing which I did myself. Cons are that you can't revert to iron sites easily.

I wanted to reply again. Your H&K usp is fucking gangster. Is it a 5in barrel and chambered in .45acp?? I would love one of those. I believe thats what Solid Snake used in Metal Gear Solid.. I know Big Boss used a 1911.

5.9" and yes. Originally I got this to shoot suppressed. I got in and the suppressor at the same time.

200 to 300$ the gx2 was only 279$ before all those silly cali taxes.

You'll need to either purchase a slide that's already milled for an optic or take your slide to a machine shop that'll do it for you. An optics adapter plate typically only changes the footprint (RMR to shield, RMSc, etc).
Holosun is essentially the standard for a pistol optic. You CAN go cheaper but you get what you pay for. I've had some good luck with Swampfox optics on cheapo range toys but for a CCW you want something you can really put your faith in (so not a Taurus and not a holosun).

Why not a Holosun for CCW?
Mina are all being rock solid

Reread what I wrote. Nowhere did I say "holosun bad". I said holosun is as cheap as I'd be willing to go.

Are you able to access a range that lets you rent guns? You might be able to borrow one with an optic to see what it is like, or go to the range with a friend who has one. I got my first pistol optic recently, and I really don't like it. It's one more thing to have to learn and deal with. I am the only person I have met who dislikes them, but it might be good to try one out before going through the cost of buying a new slide or having a current slide machined.

I appreciate the time you took to respond. That's a brilliant idea. The range where I am a member at rents firearms for 5$. So it wouldnt hurt to see if one does indeed have a sight to even see if I would like it. Anyways bought a bunch of 5.56 ammo and might as well rent an ar15 or a scout rifle. I refuse to buy a semi auto rifle in commniefornia until the laws aren't so friggen lame.

Thanks to all you guys for taking time to educate me. I didnt fire my 1st round until I was 36 and I am close to bring 39. I got hooked like a junkie. Archery is another awesome hobby. Its like what the hell was I during the 15 years from wen I was 21 and 36??

Gideon isn’t bad, especially if you don’t plan missions in Fallujah or clear the buildings

Assuming you have the GX2 without the TORO option (factory optics cut, which just shipped) your options are limited.
The GX2 rear sight is Glock pattern, so you could do a "dovetail adapter". Most of them suck and wiggle around too much, but the best is likely Dove...except they're out of business. Sigh. Dovetail adapter plates have a bad rep.
Now, there's another kinda weird but cool option, and it's cheap.
Leupold is an American optics company that makes good stuff. They have an odd optic that bolts right on to the GX2 with no modifications at all, originally $400 but now going for about $150 on Amazon. Make sure it's the Glock version and make sure the Amazon vendor is Eurooptic.
Here's reviews on this odd but kinda nice critter:

Here's why I think I'd try this.
Basically, it allows you to make a fast and cheap transition between front sight focus and target focus.
In other words, right now when you shoot with irons you're supposed to be focused on your front sight. That means your view of the target is blurry. Tactically, that's not good. If you've got three lunatics in front of you, knowing which one has the gun and that the other two have machetes, you wanna shoot the dude with the gun first :). That could save your butt. The other problem is, say a guy is threatening you but pulls out a wallet or phone or something. If you're doing front sight focus you might shoot him thinking that's a gun and catch legal hell. With target focus you've got a much better chance at figuring it out.
The other cool thing about the Deltapoint Micro is that it will co-witness with the stock front sight. In other words, if the battery or electronics fails and the dot goes down, you're not totally screwed. You put the stock front sight in the glass circle and accuracy goes down but you can still land hits - it's now called a "ghost ring" sight and those have worked for over 100 years.
All you have to do to install it is go to a gun shop, borrow a sight pusher tool, slide the stock rear sight off the gun (to the right side from the point of view of a guy shooting it) then bolt the Deltapoint Micro in. Don't need to touch the front sight.

Dude thank you for taking the time to respond. Yea the T.O.R.O was not available here in cali. I will take your advice and ask the smith at my range if he can do it on the cheap. I need to see him anyway because my other xd chambered in 40s&w has a round stuck in it and i can only rack the slide back 1 inch. God I love cali. I work for the people in cali, and it is so beautiful out here but the politicians suck serious butthole.( Can't judge them cus i have my kinks as well.)

That Leupold Deltapoint Micro will drop into the GX2 like it was made for it.
Because it was. It is uses the standard Glock rear sight mount.

I'll probably get someone to jump down my throat for this, but I bought an Osight SE on a whim and it works perfectly fine if you're looking to save some money.
