Looking for iPad mount recs for a jet
Posted by Breazzyy-@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 51 comments
Hey all! I’m going to start flying a Learjet 31A soon and I’m looking for some iPad mount recs for this jet. The cockpit is not big and space is limited so the only option is to place the iPad by the yoke. Any recs on where I can get a mount similar to this one?
Thanks!

A common choice is Pivot Mounts suction cupped to window.
sm3xym3xican@reddit
They’ve also got kneeboards that you can clip to your leg, but I guess at that point it might be easier just having it on your lap
tacomasgrande@reddit
There are still airworthy 31’s????
Such-Entrepreneur663@reddit
Plenty. Plenty of older 35s too.
tacomasgrande@reddit
35 makes sense to me because it was a workhorse made in large numbers. But the 31 was such a niche plane.

We use Pivot at my legacy, and both the mounts and cases have been pretty solid. That’s probably the route I’d go, though I also flew corporate for yeeeears and just had the mini iPad, and then the big one, in my lap.

Wow, can't believe you're at my home airport RDU :)
I saw the runway numbers and was suspicious and the ipad airport diagram gave it away lol

Your thigh will work fine..

Side note: These pictures make me realize how much I miss and don't miss that plane at the same time.
Have fun! Fly fast, don't die.

I've flown the Lear 35 for a long time. A suction mount on the window will not work. There's not enough room.
My preference is an iPad mini tucked in the side cubby. Intake it out if I need to reference anything. The yoke mounts can work, but it's still cramped.
I've seen guys have the most success with a kneepad style mount.

Pivot and ram conglomeration
aftcg@reddit
Pivot case and leg strap is my go to
xSYOTOSx@reddit
Never been in a Lear but the Beechjet was fairly small. Had mild success with a pivot case on the side window. It left about 2 inches between the yoke and the iPad. Just enough room for no interference with the yoke.
pballer2oo7@reddit
You don't need to mount your iPad.
UnfortunateSnort12@reddit
Never been in one. I had no idea how small that cockpit is!

Use paper charts like a real man. Bonus points if you haven’t updated them in a few years
BELFORD16@reddit
Wait, you’re supposed to update those?

Pivot with leg strap mount. Can easily switch it to the suction cup if space allows.
ShittyLanding@reddit
If you’re willing to commit to the case + accessories, a Pivot case and mount work very well and aren’t too bulky.
wdgiles@reddit
Yep, most of the majors have this setup with built in pivot mount points and cases on all the efbs..
LearningDumbThings@reddit
Most of the majors have cockpits 6’ wider than a Lear 31 😁
wdgiles@reddit
Fair point, I didn't consider the cramped quarters, haven't had the chance sit in or up front on one of those.
f1racer328@reddit
Right? Lear is cramped as shit. I wouldn’t know where to put an iPad either.
Honestly I’d rock ForeFlight on my phone + a suction cup mount.
iPad mini too, definitely not a full sized iPad.
latedescent@reddit
Dang, took me back with this pic. Used to fly cargo 35s. Still one of the sexiest civilian jets!
fflyguy@reddit
I use the PIVOT shorty mount. Only thing I don’t use is the pivot iPad case lol but that’s because the mount is $50 and the case is $150 and I’ll get a new iPad soon. So instead I’ve got some command tape holding on two 25 pound magnets I bought from ACE lol but the shorty mount is great
dvcxfg@reddit
Mmmmm Learjet
Metallifan33@reddit
it looks like your head is sticking out of the cockpit. lol.
two_minutes_out@reddit
Otter case and leave it in your lap. Set it between the seat and the center pedestal when you don’t need it.
I fly the 35/36 and the 31 has such a nice autopilot that honestly you don’t need it for much more than briefing approaches/arrivals and airport diagrams. You have enough avionics that it’s not necessary to mount. It’ll just be in the way. I promise.
7nightstilldawn@reddit
Oh yes the age old: mount it to the window so it breaks the glass because the window isn’t designed to hold the weight, or leave it on my lap unsecured debate! I thought we settled this? The consensus was to either pre-jam it behind your pedals or cram it either in front of or behind the throttles.
Regardless of whatever jury-rigging you decide, just make sure all your policies are in order.
For me if I’m flying something with 200 or more pax I’ll pre-jam the peddles with it out of pure hazard minimization. If I have less than 200pax I’d rather limit the throttles as I don’t need then as much.

Have used this kneeboard before (not in a jet) and it holds the iPad extremely well and very comfortable for longer flights

When I was on the Lear I had to keep it on my lap the window is too close to your head. If you’re tall you’re already tilting your neck. If that yoke mount doesn’t interfere it’d be nice but I can’t figure out how they possibly put it on there.
Perfect_Big_5907@reddit
31A was my fav plane. Feel like you are going Mach 1 sitting still. Only used paper charts though so can't help. Maybe use a kneepad.
clearingmyprop@reddit
Ram mount on the side window, get an iPad mini it’ll make it a lot easier to mount it
Such-Entrepreneur663@reddit
This is tough in the Lear. The space between the window and your head is very minimal, plus you need to see out that side of the window pretty often.

I’ve always preferred just leaving the iPad on my lap in smaller cockpits, but I’m sure a RAM mount would do just fine.
SATSewerTube@reddit
This works unless it's an air carrier (135/121/125) then the EFB program will require a mount.
Luminolum@reddit
Never been in a Lear cockpit but I’ve heard some people complain that the windows might be a little close to your head for a window mount
KipoLover123@reddit
Sorry - isn’t that FOD? Curious to how far it goes
Mundane-Reality-7770@reddit
If the window break and sucks the iPad out, you've got bigger problems
Valuable_Purpose1261@reddit
dont throw it out the window
KipoLover123@reddit
i understood FOD to be anything that could interfere with flying e.g a phone getting stuck behind the rudder pedal. Sorry
flyingforfun3@reddit
Back when I flew the Lear 75 I had a kneeboard but had the ability to pull up charts on the MFD/PFD so I didn’t use it much.
I would think a kneeboard may be your best bet.
