What to do with bee’s in the garden?
Posted by originalsadyeet@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 24 comments
I’ve noticed over the last few days a few bees flying around our back garden and going into our patio. It’s not loads, probably only like 4/5 but they are definitely flying inside our patio, between the wooden panels. I can’t identify if they are honeybees or not.
We have two dogs but they aren’t seem to be bothered about the bees. I’m just worried if more come then it might become an issue. I’ve heard you shouldn’t do anything to them personally and get someone in? But unfortunately we are broke right now and would not like to spend lots of money to remove them.
So I’m not really sure what to do, wait until there’s more bees? Call a local bee keeper and see if they remove for free?(heard that’s a thing). Try and identify the bees?
I literally know nothing about bees and don’t want to harm them but also don’t want them destroying my property (if that’s possible) or harming the dogs.
Any advice would be appreciated:)

Take out 1 with a good aimed slap (flip flop reverse grip) and use google lense to take photo and identify. If they are regular bee's check if you do not have a hive under decking, if google lens tells you they are carpenter bee's you will have to google bit more about potential timber damage. Carpenter one can damage your deck and house timbers in some cases.

In the garden I'd be happy to see them. Obviously if you start seeing full on swarms then get help, but I'd say it means you have good sources of pollen for them. No bad thing.
I'm currently more concerned about the amount of bees trying to pollinate my feet. Can't tell if the amount of them landing down there is a compliment or not, maybe I have sweet feet. 🤷🏻♂️

Just keep an eye on your dogs and stop them from messing with them, otherwise just leave them 🤷♂️, unless you have a hive

We had bumble bees living under a rock near our back door a few years ago. Never caused us any trouble. I'm sad they never came back
SuperDinkle406@reddit
We are interested to know where their hive is, so we tie very long thin thread to them and follow them back to the hive.
We bears are clever.

Do nothing. There's no issue.
StargirlPeep@reddit
Do you mean you think there’s a beehive underneath the decking? Like, are they flying in and out through the decking boards?

I’m not sure if there’s a beehive because I can’t see anything but the bees are definitely flying in and out of the decking panels
the_tartanunicorn@reddit
what do you mean when you say patio? to me that’s just a slabbed area in your garden so you wouldn’t do anything…
originalsadyeet@reddit (OP)
Wooden deck? I think maybe that’s what it’s called instead of a patio lol my bad

Doesn't matter what its made of, its outside, thats where you expect bee's to well, be.
Its not an entire swarm, they're not nesting smd its the height of the year when you'd expect to see them.
Its just a risk of stepping outside of your home that you are likely to come across the odd one, unfortunately
Sorry-Programmer9826@reddit
Perhaps the thing thats confusing everyone is why you think you'd need to do anything. Finding bees outside is like finding a bird outside. That's where it belongs. It's fine
weeble182@reddit
They are bees. The outside is their home and it's the perfect weather for them to be doing their thing. Leave them bee
CheeseusMaximus@reddit
Leave them alone, like you say they're not bothering you or the dogs and the bees need all the love they can get right now.
Mezcalico@reddit
Yeah but if 5 bees each tell another 5 about the patio, and then those bees each tell another 5, before you know it you’ve got yourself a barbeecue
BillyJoeDubuluw@reddit
I really wouldn’t excite yourselves worrying about external costs - but if there was to be an infestation and you “had a go” at sorting it out with zero pest control experience then good luck…
It’s perfectly normal that there should be a few bees on your patio, but keep your eye on the situation and do seek external assistance if it feels like it’s getting out of hand…
Sometimes you do have to pay people with specialist experience to get a job sorted for you, though… or you could end up in A and E…

If they were honey bees, there would be a swarm which could settle there if there is enough room. Bubble bees are solitary so probably not them. Sure they are not wasps?
DaveL16@reddit
Probably masonary bees
IntrepidMaybe8579@reddit
Id make beehives
Sorry-Programmer9826@reddit
Bees are part of "outside". They aren't even very aggressive (like wasps can be). Leave them be. If you find them actually nesting on/in your house then you might want to look into it but 4 been overflowing your patio is a nothing
Brave_Reaction_4968@reddit
I don't think a couple of bees in your patio is going to cause any problems.
_Loosecanon_@reddit
Leave them bee
Nun-Taken@reddit
They’re bees, let them bee!
