Does anyone in DFW have a functional laptop I could borrow or buy cheap for school?

Hi everyone I’m starting classes this week and I’m in a tight spot financially right now. My current laptop is no longer working and I’m looking for a basic working laptop I could borrow, very cheap, or possibly take off someone’s hands if they have an older one they don’t use anymore.
It doesn’t need to be fancy. I mainly need it for schoolwork, job applications, email, documents, and online assignments.
I’m in the DFW area and can meet somewhere public/safe. I know this is a long shot, but I figured I’d ask.
Thank you either way.

I know this is cheesy, but usually local libraries have free computers to use until you can find one for yourself. Get yourself a library card and try that out if its feasible for you!!
keesouth@reddit
Why is that cheesy. It's a practical solution that more people should be aware of.

I love public libraries personally, but alot of people hold weird stigmas around them so I was trying to pander a little bit in case there are feelings of embarrassment or something
3Time4Eater3@reddit
I thought I'd seen a lot of crazy, but haven't been around the kind with stigma against libraries.
Curvol@reddit
Oh buddy do the school district superintendents in the south have something new to talk about with you!
3Time4Eater3@reddit
I don't have kids, I have no reason to be in a library so this is new to me.. PS I'm in Texas
DayLatter405@reddit
You don't have to have kids to go to a library? You just literally just did a perfect example of stigma around libraries lol
3Time4Eater3@reddit
I don't have a stigma around libraries. You just made my comment into something it wasn't. And I think you're using ETA incorrectly.. soooooo hmm.
DayLatter405@reddit
Forst off, you literally said, " i do not have kids so i so I have no reason to go to the library", that is a stigma or assumption that you must have kids to go to the library even though it for children AND adults. Also, ETA is an abbreviation for edit to add on reddit. Get your head out of your ass.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
You're wrong about my comment. Read it again with the punctuation that is in there. ETA means estimated time of arrival. What does that have to do with what came after?
keesouth@reddit
Libraries aren't just for kids. You can get discount passes to shows and state parks. They train people for their GEDs and other certifications. Hell you can stream movies for free.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
As I stated to begin with I have no reason to go to a library. I understand what is in them. I still have no reason to be in one. I don't know why that's difficult to understand
Curvol@reddit
.... yeah man Texas is part of the south hahaha
I was just making a good about the book bans and fund cutting as of late.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
That's what I was looking for. I was unaware of funds being cut. And honestly kinda forgot about the book bans here. Florida gets a lot of attention for that lol. All this is unsurprising under Abbotts rule. What i do know about is the charter school BS ruining Houston right now, and probably up here in Dallas, too.

Embarrassment? The OP is asking to borrow a laptop on Reddit. This is a great alternative to borrowing from a stranger (who probably won’t lend it anyways).
DayLatter405@reddit
I've known people who are the stubborn and hateful type that shame people for using free resources including libraries. There is absolutely nothing embarrassing about needing to use free resources, but some people will make you feel that way

What doesn't work with the one you have?
xoxollie_@reddit (OP)
It won’t turn on anymore. I’ve tried charging it and restarting it, but it’s basically dead at this point.
12VoltGuardianAngel@reddit
Nah. I can fix it. I don't have one to give you but if you'd like me to fix the one you have then send me a DM. No charge from me and parts may run as high as $50 but if I already have the part you need then you can have it.

I accidentally yeeted my MacBook to the ground. How much would you charge to diagnose it?
3Time4Eater3@reddit
🏆 for being awesome
xoxollie_@reddit (OP)
I really appreciate that offer, that’s incredibly kind. The issue is it’s a very old refurbished laptop, super small, and even if it gets fixed I’m worried it won’t reliably handle schoolwork/job applications long term. I’m hoping to put donations toward something dependable, but thank you genuinely for offering to help 🤍🤍🤍

I have a free MacBook you can have. You need to drive out to me. It’s old. It’s good though.

You can find cheap laptops at Best Buy for education.

I love Best Buy 🫶🏼

Check your school, they usually allow rentals of calculators and laptops. Also utilize your computer lab
Havocxt@reddit
Some libraries will let you borrow laptops.

Seconding public libraries, I practically lived there in college when I wasn’t in class. I couldn’t afford my own computer.
