What are your home cooling hacks?

No doubt this question has been asked before but today is the hottest May Day in recorded history in the UK and so it feels pretty relevant to ask.
What are some of your tips for keeping your house cool?
I’ve heard some say keep windows open, some say keep them closed. Some say keep curtains open, others say keep them closed.
What are your tried and tested methods to survive this onslaught?

Have a genuine, clear, and concise question in their title - including a question mark.
Ensure you can say your question title to someone at a bus stop and have them understand what you mean. So for example, no "Overseas Territories?", instead it should be "What Overseas Territories have you been to?".

I moved to France 20 years ago (following my future wife!) and the big difference here is the outside electric rolling shutters. You can put them down completely or leave little slits by stopping them just before they shut completely. They're white. It means during the day you have them completely shut and then at night you can have the door completely open (if the door opens inwards of course) and let the breeze through. I wish my parents (who live in Kent) had them!
If I was back in an English house, using my experience of life in France, I'd:

I've bought an air con unit. Not really a hack but it works 😆

Windows and curtains closed all day.
At about 8PM open them all and let a bit of a breeze move through the house.
It's not much but it helps a little bit. These people who have their windows lying wide open all day long are nuts.

North west so pretty tolerable so far, I do dampen a couple of tea towels and chuck in the freezer each morning in case it gets too hot in the evening, also the usual, window/ curtain wise

Keep shutters/curtains/blinds closed all day with windows open

You know you can read a sub or use search before jumping in with the #1 FAQ right?

Curtains and windows closed during the day while the outside air is hotter than inside.
When the outside air has cooled windows and curtains open and doors open to allow airflow throughout the house. Point a fan towards the windows to blow hot air out.
Frozen bottle of water in front of an oscillating fan.

Windows and curtains/blinds closed during the day. Open at night when it's cooler outside.
In extreme heat I have used a combination of a desk fan and ice/freezer blocks and wet tea towels to blow cool air around.
