Battery caught fire

I got a free e-bike yesterday(Retrospec Beaumont rev) & the battery caught fire while charging. I assume this isn’t the original battery?
PickleAlly@reddit
You’re making that assumption based on the fire or what?
Caramel_Pineapple@reddit (OP)
I did some googling and this looks to be a china replacement you can get off alibaba
& i wouldn’t think that Retrospec will have another companies branding on their bikes
OOOdragonessOOO@reddit
it's all from china, rebranded. this is just misinformation
Caramel_Pineapple@reddit (OP)
Like you mentioned “rebranded”
Wouldn’t that mean they would take off the previous brands logo and put on their own? Sorry if I’m mistaken
I can see on retrospects website a replacement battery is 500$ and I would expect them to atleast make it have their logo on it

i am looking, out of curiosity, for your battery manufacturer. they don't want you to know because then you could easily bypass them and find it cheaper lol so far it may be from ding tai battery company in Shenzhen
OOOdragonessOOO@reddit
no lol it all comes from the same manufacturing company and a business pays to put their name on it. even the big brands majority of all oue e transport and bicycle parts are from china and Japan

I'd buy a used bike any day of the week, but if someone gave me an ebike, I'd be very skeptical.
Thank goodness your house didn't catch fire.
Significant-Pen-6049@reddit
Idk but it's a strange shaped battery from what I'm use to
Substantial_Mud_3203@reddit
I know this is off topic, but I have that exact same air purifier and vacume
Caramel_Pineapple@reddit (OP)
Don’t buy that exact battery now 😅
captwaffles27@reddit
Lmao free ebike. This was inevitable
Caramel_Pineapple@reddit (OP)
Right haha

This is why I never charge my batteries indoors. I charge them out on my concrete patio.
Caramel_Pineapple@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately, I live in an apartment so not as easy to do
TheDarkClaw@reddit
Though Bosch and brose stop have bms which stops over charging
Prestigious-Rate-380@reddit
A lot of batteries have bms these days, now if they're reliable is another question. I own 2 of the now recalled UPP triangle batteries so I charge them outside, I would for any large battery even if it had authentic UL certs.
Prestigious-Rate-380@reddit
Before anyone comments, yes I know I'm playing with fire at this point with those batteries but they still work great 5 years in.
IndividualActive786@reddit
This is good advice, especially with an unknown battery.
AcanthisittaOk9104@reddit
Did it trip any kind of breaker? This had been one of my fears with my ebike
Caramel_Pineapple@reddit (OP)
No breakers were tripped
