ULPT request: roommate put ring camera in house
Posted by alec7717@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 46 comments
Hi all. Not me, but my girlfriend. Her roommate/sister put up a ring camera in the living room. She is totally against it but really just hates the conflict that it will cause if she protests too much. Is there a way to just make it seemingly not work through the app or something? She does have access to it in the app and the house ecosystem of technology.
Thank you

You can fry electronics in it and connect it back. I fried hard drive this way. Just need to have piezoelectric gun and shoot it into any connections that are coming out of camera. I used one that is normally used to remove static electricity

My aunt did the same thing all over my grandma's house when she moved in to care for her
Whenever I was in town I would just enter the home with mask, hoodie, sunglasses, and then hang towels over them after unplugging them
She threatened me once by saying she was gonna call the cops but in her state, it was illegal to have cameras inside the house without a sign stating you were entering a space with private cameras so I told her go ahead... boy was she mad after the guy came and told her to put up signs or take them down haha
NetPositive101@reddit
What kind of backwards shithole country do you live in where cameras can’t be installed on private property without a warning sign lmao. Yikes.
EatSleepJeep@reddit
Video recording is typically OK. Audio recording requires signage.

DeliciousBeanWater@reddit
I mean she may have been doing it to make sure your grandma wasnt being abused. Theres not a state in the US where its illegal to have cameras inside the house you live in without signage. Youre in a private residence. Theres no expectation of privacy.
DreSledge@reddit
She was the abuser- I mean caretaker ahem
And you are incorrect about privacy laws
DeliciousBeanWater@reddit
If the aunt holds residence there, she can legally place cameras. Theres not enough info and op is technically an unreliable narrator

You are a real gas, thanks for the chuckle
arseface1@reddit
Your Aunt called the police on you in your grandmas?
DreSledge@reddit
Not even the worst thing she did while she was in there, the lady is a piece of work

Put a box over it or destroy it physically. Other than that? Nope, gotta be an adult and have a conversation with them. Terrifying, I know
Konilos@reddit
Sorry, not sure if you were aware, but this is ULPT. If people would talk things out like adults, there would be no reason for this subreddit.
SUP3RMUNCh@reddit
Did you willfully ignore the first sentence I typed? Here let me retype it for you
“Put a box over it or destroy it physically”

After they have a conversation with them, they should eat their leftovers out of the fridge.

Tape Saran Wrap over the lens and the picture is blurry

That is probably against the roommate agreement if you have a lease. I would just take it down, and then if it happens a second time it goes in the outdoor dumpster inside a ziplock bag of poop.
If that's not possible, remember Ring cameras don't work without internet, so if you have access to the router you could blacklist its MAC address.
tetheredvoid@reddit
I'm curious how one would acquire fecal matter for the bag without owning pets...but it's a great deterrent.
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Well most people also poop, it’s not just pets
OriginalIronDan@reddit
Don’t use your own. They can check the DNA.
tetheredvoid@reddit
I was afraid that would be the answer lol
Life_Carpenter1270@reddit
I was hoping that was the answer

Unplug it

Take a picture of someone's butthole and put it in front of the camera.

Log into router admin and block the MAC address from connecting to home internet. Then change the password to the router admin. They may figure it out eventually depending on how tech savvy they are though.

You just need to put something in the living room that will trigger it constantly, so the battery dies. Additionally, if she has it delivering notifications to her phone, you'll also cause her phone battery to quickly drain.
And to make it unethical, invite homeless people over to masturbate in front of the camera.
zon5string@reddit
Sounds like it's time for the house to become "clothing optional".
writinglegit2@reddit
The amount of "adults" on reddit incapable of having a conversation is staggering.
I always read these and then hope I run into these people in the wild, because it sounds like you could basically just walk up and take their purse or car and the person would just look at the ground and mumble

Anything she does to break it will just get fixed in troubleshooting or the roommate will replace the camera. They aren’t that expensive.

Create her own Ring account. Register the camera with herself. Do not share it with her sister.
Then tell her sister she’s going to post Drunken Walk Of Shame videos of her sister .
Such-Mountain-6316@reddit
Take a picture of the room. Be sure to get the right perspective. Set it in front of the camera and leave it there.
You must use a photo of the room to avoid suspicion so she doesn't come around checking the problem.
distributingthefutur@reddit
Block it from the wifi router.
Pure_Cow_7831@reddit
if you have access to router, block the cams ip address

Are they renting? Them is something that need to be agreed to by all parties. If it's her roommates house then she should look into moving out.
