Is Greece a good choice for a leftist student?

I am a leftist, queer artist from Turkey, and I am looking to move to Greece for my master's degree. I want to stay within the Mediterranean region, and given our shared cultural elements, Greece feels like a natural fit. I’ve heard about places like Exarcheia but I'd love to hear about other places where I can feel safe.

Are you from the Aegean? Or why do you feel so drawn to it?
Or do your ancestors hail from Greece and were forced to move to Türkiye during the population exchange of 1923? In other words, are you a descendant of Turks or Vallahades or Cretan Muslims from Greece?

Definitely do so, public universities also are very active politically, having elections every May, with many leftist and communist forces participating

The elections are basically a circlejerk though. At this day and age, it's uncommon for student assemblies to even have a quorum (which requires below 100 students even in departments of 1000+ students). Most students simply don't care about the politics of those groups. Alternatively, people may laugh or be annoyed at their expense.
That is not to say that Greek universities aren't progressive or inclusive. They are. But not because of the partisans. Arguably they are progressive despite the partisans (remember that none of the partisans were in favour of the same-sex marriage law).

Greece is the best choice for leftist students maybe in the whole Europe.
markeetstreet@reddit
Isn't that what they say about every university ever?

As a leftist university student in Greece you can
Occupy the university campus for many days under some pretext
You can have squating buildings inside the campus where you and your team can operate
Fight with other leftists with clubs and helmets. We have leftist infighting like the Spanish Civil War in 2026. Anarchists vs communists which each other sent members of the opposite team at the hospital
You can arrange concerts public speeches inside the campus for your cause
You can live your myth as a leftist in Greece

Not tjat much thpugh. Greeks didn't experience communism so it's more popular there...

Exarcheia is the place for you

Greece will certainly be better than Turkey in this regard, but you should really go to Spain. Definitely don't go to Italy except for Bologna (hyper leftist city in a generally conservative country).
Mou_aresei@reddit
Yep, Greece is a great choice for you.
No_Idea_479@reddit
Compared to the rest of the Balkans it's obviously the best choice.
I'd say it's better than some of the West, even. Definitely better than Italy in that regard.

Balkans arent that homophobic imo, its kind of bloated in order to fit into the narative that we hate everybody lol.
Emergency-Buddy-8582@reddit
Honestly, I think you would love Exarchia.
