Is the word bastard going out of fashion?

I never hear it anymore. Used to be when I was a youth the swear of choice. Now i can't remember the last time I heard or used it.
flavouredicecubes@reddit
It's always been and still is the preserve of Northern dads
pixieorfae@reddit
Dunno, but it was my first ever swear word so I’m not letting it die. Made 9 year old me feel hard as nails.
Gold-Psychology-5312@reddit (OP)
Same. Now I'm all about the c word.
Objective-Manner7430@reddit
I’m Scottish we love the C word 😂
True-Boysenberry7308@reddit
Celtic?
Objective-Manner7430@reddit
From a family of Celtic supporters so I’m not opposed to that, but no, the c word in general is part of everyday vernacular, it can even be a compliment 😂
True-Boysenberry7308@reddit
reserved for banging my toes or funny bone.
RatzzFace@reddit
What you talking about you bastard? Of course now! :s
AnotherLeda@reddit
Agreed. Also, loving the Jack Deth pfp.
RatzzFace@reddit
You're only the 2nd person to see hit. But the first to get the spelling correct... 🙌🏻
AnotherLeda@reddit
Dry hair is for squids. Been rewatching the box set.
RatzzFace@reddit
😅😅😅
AnotherLeda@reddit
Thanks! Love a good B movie.
MsUncleare@reddit
My son left for work before I was home this morning so had to call him and ask if the "bastard cat" had been fed. So I know I still use it.
hairlikebrianmay@reddit
"has the bastard cat been fed?" ... "has it fuck".
MsUncleare@reddit
Turns out the cat is a lying bastard.
hairlikebrianmay@reddit
It's been going that bastards down the road to be bastard fed.
mistakes-were-mad-e@reddit
Sean Bean.
Upper_Paramedic_2043@reddit
Pronounced basst-ad
GrumpyOldFart74@reddit
How else would you pronounce it?!
vipros42@reddit
Bar stad
Rhyobit@reddit
First thing my mind went to, you did not disappoint.
amore_pomfritte@reddit
Bastard
TangerineFew6830@reddit
I use it frequently, in front of the kids too, i just feel is it really a swear word, i never thought it was as a kid and it stuck with me 😂
AnotherLeda@reddit
Not if I have anything to do with it!
Wizzpig25@reddit
Going out of fashion like a bastard!
ForwardAd5837@reddit
Not with my partner’s 94 year old Grandad. He loves it.
Macrihanishautomatic@reddit
So many people are born out of wedlock these days the term has become rather redundant.
Manifestival1@reddit
I mean it's long evolved to have expanded its spoken meaning beyond that alone.
Equal_Membership_923@reddit
“Bastard bitch” is a personal favourite especially if done in an Indian accent. 😂
DarthScabies@reddit
"Fuck you bloody fuck you". 😂
MarsupialPrimary8128@reddit
I don't know. My culture keep that word alive
levezvosskinnyfists7@reddit
Not if Mick McCarthy’s got anything to say about it
sheepandlambs@reddit
It's probably died out because being a literal bastard is no longer seen as shameful.
Tumeni1959@reddit
We resurrected it after Game of Thrones, and typically utter it in the manner and accent of Ser Alliser Thorne, played by actor Owen Teale.
T_raltixx@reddit
Less of an insult these days.
BusyBeeBridgette@reddit
It's the swearword of choice when I hit my shin against the coffee table or hit my small toe against the door frame.
Arny2103@reddit
I come out with all sorts and sometimes it's a surprise which makes me laugh at myself. Takes the pain and annoyance away.
Objective-Manner7430@reddit
😂😂 was literally just thinking the same thing
NovelShelter7489@reddit
Mine when I stub my little toe: 'Arghhh, you fucking bastard'. To verbalise your discomfort makes all the difference.
wolfwynd@reddit
Mine too 😂
RelationKindly@reddit
I think c*nt is the word of choice these days…
aaliyah_2222@reddit
32 years old & still use it
TommyCheckers976@reddit
Is this Mick McCarthy?
trustmeimabuilder@reddit
Not in this bastard house.
PissTitsAndBush@reddit
I'm in the north west of Scotland. I haven't heard Bastard used frequently in quite some time, what's wild though is that it seems to have been replaced with 'Retard'.
I've been hearing that absolutely everywhere again recently. Hadn't heard it for a good decade up until a few months ago.
Few-Consequence7407@reddit
I hear it used about a hundred times an hour. But i live next door to Sean Bean.
amitythree@reddit
Not in my Scotland. Not in the Scotland I'm living in
Soniq268@reddit
I’m from Glasgow and don’t recall ever hearing it. Moved to Ayrshire (wife is from here), everything is a bastard apparently 😂😂
GeggingIn@reddit
I saw heard someone call their pal a greedy bastard this very morning
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
Bastart
Blind_Warthog@reddit
Of course not you stupid bastard. I love the word.
AnyOlUsername@reddit
Ask all the objects I’ve dropped.
insertitherenow@reddit
I’ve not heard many young people say it. As an old fart I use regularly.
sameoldkit@reddit
I haven't heard it in the wild recently. Bastard in a Yorkshire accent is excellent, not too offensive but sharp enough
AnteaterSnouce@reddit
up north, it's still at the height of its power. although yorkshiremen pronounce it "bastid".
NovelShelter7489@reddit
No way! I'm Northern, and love saying 'you complete bastard', or just 'bastard' in general.
OkCod6880@reddit
come to yorkshire, it's a standard word in our dictionary lmao
LilacScentedStoat@reddit
People have realised they can't say it in anyway that's cooler than Sean Bean does, so they gave up.

Fine_Cress_649@reddit
Game of Thrones has ruined using it as an insult by reclaiming the word for its original meaning.
SongsAboutGhosts@reddit
Not in my house, I'm the only legitimate one among us.
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
You know nothing Jon Snow
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
“He’s such a bastard” sounds terribly quaint these days.
brushfuse@reddit
Never in my life have I heard it used for it's actual definition.
FreeBogwoppits@reddit
Good point. I'm in Essex and haven't heard it for a long time. It's generally straight to c u next Tuesday (I don't know if the word is banned on here).
Chopsticks_Charlie@reddit
I'm in Essex, cunt and bastard are frequently used in my household.
Specialist-Prior-213@reddit
Tf you mean you never hear it anymore?
Resident_Win_1058@reddit
“Ah ya bastard” is the only suitable response to hurting yourself with an inanimate object.
mackerel_slapper@reddit
I say ‘bastard bollocks” a lot. WFH though, so only
my wife hears. “dogs bollocks bastards” if I’m especially irked.
AffectionateAd8377@reddit
Oh hell no. It's a classic, will always be around. I used it myself on Sunday to describe Everton.
Bibblejw@reddit
Based on my gut feelings ... maybe?
It kinda feels like it's more serious than "git", but not as bad as "cunt". It feels like bastard kind of sits in the middle, which isn't often used?
Also, there's the rise in pedantic gits that respond with their paternal lineage to be smart.
Duckboythe5th@reddit
Nope, I called my mate a fucking bastard yesterday
Robynellawque@reddit
Fucking bastard said the Northern way always gets the point across.
thatguysaidearlier@reddit
Being born out of wedlock was the thing being looked down upon. And I suppose was probably a slight on your mother as well.
Now that we are less religious, more kids are born out of wedlock than in, and I hope most of us are less misogynistic, I suppose it has lost most of it's sting as an actual insult.
Still very much in play for me and my friends though. More as an 'arsehole' / 'dickhead' type alternative than an examination of their conception.
And then there's the ravashing bastard type use which is more of a compliment really.
Prestigious-Salt-245@reddit
I think it suffers from the cultural shift whereby having been born to unmarried parents not really mattering to most people any more. It's still used for its proper meaning e.g. when talking about history, there being no other convenient single word to specify that someone's parents were born out of wedlock.
GeggingIn@reddit
Thought it was is still in vogue here.
Afunnyclownfish@reddit
I call my unwed friend’s children it in a joking manner (they laugh)
Flippin_Heckles@reddit
What a bastard of a question!
x-ThatGirl-x@reddit
Not in my household.
ThinkIshatmyself@reddit
I hope now. I'm a frequent user of the term.
Bloody bastards.
ZonaSchengen@reddit
