What's the most clothes you've seen someone wearing today?
Posted by Martipar@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 139 comments
I've been on a few trains today and I've seen various people wearing more than just a t-shirt and shorts/trousers. The most was a guy in a t-shirt, buttoned up shirt, jacket and trousers. I'm at New Street and a lady is wearing a t-shirt, unbuttoned shirt, jeans and she's fanning herself with a newspaper.
I'm not suggesting people walk around in their underwear but people die in hot weather precisely because they do nothing to cope. I haven't seen any coats today but i usually set at least one so it's only a matter of time.

Saw a roadman wear a parka jacket, tracksuit bottoms and the lot.
Literally Man's Not Hot but real life
Moppo_@reddit
I know this is a subculture thing, but every time I read "roadman" I automatically picture highway maintenance crew.
EntrepreneurGreen269@reddit
It's very interesting how dressing a certain way labels someone a "roadman". When I was growing up, a roadman is someone who has no secure income and substitutes it or entirely makes his income selling illegal whatever, doing illegal whatever, betting or some other unconventional scheme to make a profit.
whoisshe_777@reddit
They’ve just generalised it to anyone (pref: black) wearing a tracksuit now
NortonBurns@reddit
You need to watch Top Boy. It's where most people get their roadman culture information from, including me, a white 66-year-old;).
It's actually very good too.

Im working with someone whos always wearing a woolly hat and a thick coat. All summer. Everyday. No idea why cos he doesnt like to talk with anyone and we been working together over 10y
WinglyBap@reddit
Is there a point where this would insulate him from the external heat?
BTZ-25@reddit
Yep. I've seen this too. Balaclava and all.
Adorable_Past9114@reddit
Yo, bruv don't wanna het skin cancer innit
EntrepreneurGreen269@reddit
Been going on for a few years. Come winter or summer, Balaclavas (pooh shiesty) and full cotton tracksuits are the go to. The mind boggles. I know they have to be sweating like the inside of a steamer wearing those things.
smay1989@reddit
Far less intimidating when you realise its a skinny teenager under all the gear
Upbeat-Training4665@reddit
And he’s also really smelly by now too
WGD23@reddit
There was a girl swanning about on the beach yesterday in full leggings and a bomber style fur jacket, like some kind of disco diva..
First thing that come to mind was Man's Not Hot!
Alternative_Driver30@reddit
I saw one too in his puffer jacket. Maybe he wanted keep warm from all the cold breeze as hae zoomed past the red light on his bike.

Streathamite@reddit
Presumably they have something on underneath the parka
EntrepreneurGreen269@reddit
Ok, but why the pooh shiesty? I've even seen woolly hats being worn. The sun is beating down, it's not cold.
SWVsuccess@reddit
Just makes me wanna take them to a lab and do thyroid tests on them lol
R05579@reddit
Yep, 2days ago saw a roadman wearing full balaclava, just along the road another walking along topless..
West_Guarantee284@reddit
Maybe some people wearing shirts over t-shirts are very sensitive to the sun? Yesterday I wore a lining shirt overvalued vest top cus I can't expose my new tattoos to the sun. Sometimes a light lining or cotton shirt can be cooler than thr sun direct on your skin aswell.
No-Kaleidoscope790@reddit
Saw a young woman wearing very short skirt with no underwear on, pushing a bike. Had grandson with me and found it highly inappropriate, even though he didn’t see anything.
baked_little_cookie@reddit
Saw a girl wearing black tights, black ugg boots and a black fluffy jacket earlier……. I used to be that girl though. I think it’s fear of showing skin because you don’t like the look of it. Nowadays I get my legs out even if they look shit ✌🏻
Sea-Hamster7033@reddit
your legs don't look shit, they look like they carry you places and are awesome as a result. Legs rule. Be proud.
PM-me-your-cuppa-tea@reddit
I saw a woman in a knitted dress and tights with a big woolly cardigan earlier. I wish she'd had ugg boots to complete it
Fweetheart@reddit
Its like they're trying to make a statement or something. The same as the ones who insist on wearing shorts in the snow
Gary_BBGames@reddit
As a previously fat person I would always wear the same thing. 2 T-shirts, one tucked in to wick up the sweat that runs down and one over the top to hide it. Always jeans as my legs were too fat, and always boots as I was worried people might think I was trying to look “cool”. Sometimes people are very aware they’re not helping themselves but are too self conscious.
I’ve lost the weight now and am wearing T-shirts and shorts and think “fuck what anyone else thinks”, but that’s was harder for me when I was fat.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
I hate that being overweight makes you so much hotter and uncomfortable in the heat yet overweight/fat people feel they need to cover up because of fat phobia. I don’t actually think as many people would care as our brains make us think but being self conscious is horrid. Love to everyone of every size. 5
MineMelodic5454@reddit
I’ve been on the beach today and there were all shapes and sizes there. Some really super fat people just letting it all hang out and enjoying their day in the sun. Also loads of gym bros. And everything in between. The beach is a body democratic space if you choose to not be self conscious. Literally nobody cares.
jerbaws@reddit
Same for underweight: I would wear jeans because legs are like stilts, and an open shirt over a tshirt as I dont want to show my upper arms. Im a guy. I love summer but hate how self conscious I am all the time and always have been. Think by 40 id get to the "idgaf what people think" stage but nope, anxiety doesnt work that way.
annaonthemoon79@reddit
at the bus stop this afternoon in Lincon, a lady was wearing polyester trousers and a FLEECE JACKET
Equal-Competition930@reddit
I not good at dressing for weather yesterday I wore my work jacket plus extra tshirt and big coat. Today I still wearing a extra tshirt but just my work jacket and a pink little fleece jacket. I think tomorrow I not wear extra tshirt and go really mad and not put jacket on . Just my work jacket . Although not enjoying weather soon as back to normal the better
IkeTurn@reddit
Some lad in a black puffa jacket hood on. He's been kicked out of three stores so far lol.
hhfugrr3@reddit
I saw a wannabe roadman (I saw wannabe because we're in the Oxfordshire countryside and they're nothing like the little shits I used to deal with in Hackney) out and about in the midday sun yesteray in black trackie bottoms and a really big heavy puffer jacket. Must have been steamed alive in there.

Saw a guy wearing chinos and a Ralph Lauren quarter zip long sleeves heavy knit jumper having a smoke break in the full sun. I fear him.
Time-Invite3655@reddit
I've seen women in basically string bikini tops and short-short-shorts and men topless with their tshirts flung over their shoulders (walking around the shops) right through to women covered literally from head to toe (only eyes visible) and others in hoodies and long trousers, and one lady wearing a knitted bobby hat! I don't recall seeing any actual coats though, which is a first as I definitely did yesterday.
For reference, it has been a steady 31/32c here at the height of the afternoon both today and yesterday.

There's a local bloke who walks round dressed as elvis (he's got a selection of elvis style jumpsuits), often carrying a ghetto blaster miming along to the songs. Even he was just in tshirt and shorts today

I saw someone in a hoodie, jeans, boots and a bobble hat earlier
tamhenk@reddit
Every day a bloke walks past me as I'm riding my bike home. He walks several miles as I've seen him at various spots.
He always wears a big puffer type jacket with the hood up.
Today was the same.
Yesterday on the field with my lad, there's a Pakistani woman wearing I KID YOU NOT the traditional head covering underneath a massive bubble jacket that almost reached the floor. WITH THE FUCKING HOOD UP. Doing laps if the field.
I swear some people are trying to have a heart attack. Bonkers!
Petrichor_ness@reddit
I WFH and had to dial into a video call earlier.
Everyone on the call is ranging from short sleeve shirt to strappy vests. I'm sat here with my chunky knit cardigan over my long sleeve top.
I do live in the Highlands though!

I saw someone walk into Aldi with jeans and a hoodie on. Clearly their inner temperature gauge is broken.
luala@reddit
I saw a young lad wearing a balaclava. I guess if you’ve planned on robbing a bank you can’t change course just because of a heatwave?
cloudracer85@reddit
I also saw a young lad in a balaclava today.
On a bike in shorts and t-shirt which shows decisions were made about what to wear for the weather that morning but he still went with the balaclava.
da-happy-cyclops@reddit
Its almost like there is another reason to wear a balaclava other than the cold....

scream_schleam@reddit
I’m originally from a tropical country where it gets very very hot. People tend to stay away from the sun but if they go out their skin is usually covered by cotton fabric.
Even here I’d be in long trousers/full sleeves shirts/long dresses albeit made of cotton to protect myself from the sun and not over heat.
Exposing myself directly to sun makes me feel hotter with darker skin absorbing more heat.
medphysfem@reddit
Yes I've not been in jeans but I have been wearing full length linen trousers, a cotton vest and a long sleeved linen shirt, as well as using a big hat and a massive handheld manual fan. I'm much cooler than if I was wearing just T shirt and shorts as I'm shading my skin with loose fitting, airy clothes and wicking away sweat. My dad lived in a desert and also humid tropical country so learnt to dress for heat from him.
Moppo_@reddit
We should probably all be wearing those, just I think most Brits probably have jeans, tracksuit bottoms and shorts (for lounging) in the house, and most of the year they don't need to think about it, so when it gets too hot they just have the shorts.
I have some lighter trousers for summer, but I couldn't find any that fit well with deep pockets, so I'm always tapping my legs to make sure my phone and wallet haven't slipped out.

Yes definitely. My husband (not a food deliverer) travelling to work, was thankfully wearing his full protective gear, when his motorbike skidded on some oil on the road and he fell from his bike. This was 2 Summers ago.
DietRadiant9360@reddit
It's over 30 degrees where I am and my neighbour has just come home from work wearing his jeans, fleece and big coat. He's from South Sudan and I'm from Ireland so he thinks it's 'lovely weather ' and I'm dying... He thinks I'm very funny...
MrPogoUK@reddit
The Indian bloke on our street still has his winter coat on, but had forgone his usual woolly hat to acknowledge it’s not quite as freezing as he usually finds it.
Primary-Angle4008@reddit
That could be my husband, he is Indian and took his coat this morning but left his wooly hat behind but just because he couldn’t find it
Moppo_@reddit
I remember in Portugal locals saying we'd need a cardigan at night.
We did not.

Same in Oman. Friends would say ‘bring a jacket!’ …it was 25C 😂
JimmyBallocks@reddit
Not today, but about 30-ish years ago on a day just as hot as today.
I was in a train pulling out of Reading station and there was a group of about 3-4 train spotters on the platform with their pads and pens and binoculars and that.
One of them was wearing a full-on North Sea fisherman getup. Sou’wester hat, oilskin coat, galoshes, the lot. I swear on my life this is true. He looked very red in the face, very sweaty, and rather cross.
I couldn’t believe my eyes, and I don’t think his friends could either, as their faces and body language gave the impression they were pleading with him.
This has quite regularly popped into my head over the years. I wish I could find out more.

ErrantBrit@reddit
The light breeze you felt in the shade was probably baltic for them
another_awkward_brit@reddit
Probably me! Chinos, cotton shirt & linen jacket. It's surprisingly comfortable as you don't have the sun beating down on bare skin and the natural fibres allow everything to breath.

I have scarring that I'm not comfortable showing. I may look more covered but I'm comfortable in light, airy fabrics.
I can't tell you how frustrating it is for people to say "aren't you boiling" because I'm in linen trousers and a blouse rather than shorts and a tee. No, nosey chops, back off.
EntrepreneurGreen269@reddit
I know there are a few people who have some type of disorder, maybe body dysmorphia issues who are self conscious about their body... but I don't get the Balaclavas and woolly hats and jackets.
3lbFlax@reddit
When I was a teenager I felt very vulnerable without a coat or jacket, though I didn’t really understand what was going on - I just kept one on by default in public. I can remember walking across campus in a long, thick black coat in summer and not being consciously bothered by the heat because it wouldn’t occur to me to do otherwise. I’m sure it looked like a very affected mannerism to anyone who wasn’t around when I took the coat off to reveal the random assortment of clobber I’d pulled out the drawer that morning (Mr Spock-shirt and school trousers, most likely).
It wasn’t until a couple of years later in a pub when someone asked “why don’t you take your coat off?” that I actually considered the question and had a sudden flash of clarity - I didn’t actually have to live that way, it was just a sad old habit with ideas above its station. I didn’t run straight out to buy a bunch of jogging shorts and sleeveless vests, but I got better.
Of course I never wore a balaclava, that’d be mental.
