Greece.

One day if I am rich I will visit everything there is to visit there, I don't even care about other destinations in Europe except Rome and Barcelona/Spain in general but Greece is my number 1 priority if I make it in life
Toliveandieinla@reddit
Yes

I’m not a nationalistic Greek but this made me feel very special and proud!

You should be, you guys are good people (been there only once)

Italy, Spain and Croatia for Austria

Greece, Turkiye and Serbia from the immediate neighbors. otherwise Italy, Spain and Germany.

freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Really? Turkey is a popular destination for Greeks as well (primarily Istanbul, not for summer vacations).
Young_Owl99@reddit
Going to Greek islands on summer holidays is a way to protest our own tourism sector.
WanaxAndreas@reddit
You can also visit Athens,I'm always curious how different or similar Athens is to the average western Turkish cities vibe
Young_Owl99@reddit
I would love to. But visa you know :)
I can’t say a thing about Athens but people say Thessaloniki is really similar to western Turkey. To İzmir especially.
lefm2@reddit
I had a friend from Izmir visiting in Thessaloniki and he said that he felt so at home that it felt he already knew most of the people, like he's seen them before in Izmir.
romananger94@reddit
I can’t talk about Athens but Saloniki is copy paste Izmir just smaller.
dallyan@reddit
Isn’t it cheaper now anyway?
roxellani@reddit
Oh yes. Fun fact, Turks are treated like cockroaches in their own tourism regions, while they are treated like human beings in Greece, so yes people who can afford the visa or have green passports would likely prefer Dodecanesse over Marmaris or Bodrum.
DontCareHowICallMe@reddit
How bad is it there?
roxellani@reddit
Not bad really, chilling by the black sea atm.See i don't pretend to be rich, so i don't visit the Mediterrenean hotspots, not worth getting ripped off. And since everyone has left to their villages for the Islamic holiday, enjoying some of the briefest periods of peace and quiet all season.
Kalimera komşu :)
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Beautiful :).
Savings_Cause5234@reddit
Wow, Reddit is really a miracle maker... a Greek and a Turk having a civil discussion, dare I say, even a friendly one
overlorddeniz@reddit
Almost all our actual conversations are very friendly. We just like to put up a show on the internet. You know, to save face.
kr4cken@reddit
In Turkey? Terrible. Since there's a special islands entrance visa now a lot of people that can afford to go to the top summer tourism destinations are rather choosing to go to the Greek Islands.
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Rich Turks are also really into getting the Greek golden passports lol. Can’t blame them. I’d want to GTFO as well and take my money with me.
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Come to Romania if you like the Black Sea and Danube delta.
Einherjeren@reddit
Fun fact, Turks are ~~treated like~~ cockroaches
roxellani@reddit
Good, all the more reason for people like you to avoid here.

Significant-Ad-7182@reddit
Prices are better for the service you're getting. Easy to go as well because there are ferries that go to Greek islands like the ferry from Kuşadası to Samos.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
I've been on that ferry! Kuşadası was a bit rough, great food though, but Ephesos was 👌
Significant-Ad-7182@reddit
Kuşadası does suck. My parents grow olives near Ephesus, we can see the entire city from the mountain.
I am at the beach looking at Samos right now lol.
Early-Show2886@reddit

Early-Show2886@reddit
I read this very often, but I wonder which Turks these are and from which region of Turkey?
So, if you know the Turks who live directly on the border with Greece, you never hear anything about them being interested in the neighboring country at all.
Thracians are rarely encountered abroad; they are a distinct people. They love Turkish Thrace, and they have little interest in what happens outside of it.
Significant-Ad-7182@reddit
I know a Turk from Thracian region (know her from work) and she told me she traveled through mainland Greece by car.
Early-Show2886@reddit
Living in Thrace doesn't mean being a true, native Thrace.
Many Turks from Anatolia and the Black Sea region have settled here in recent years.
They aren't natives.
What I've noticed is that many Turks from Anatolia or the Aegean have a great interest in Greece.
But true Balkan Turks and their descendants in Thrace...no.
Perhaps those who originally came from Salonica, Maybe.
dallyan@reddit
Yes. My mom is from the Izmir region and I grew up spending summers in and around that region so I’ve traveled a lot to various islands. I also have a US passport so it’s easier for me. But I’ve been to Athens, Thessaloniki, Aegina, Rhodes, Crete, Samos, Chios, and Kastellorizo.
icancount192@reddit
Xanthe and Alexandroupoli have daily lots of tourists from Edirne, Terkidag, Istanbul.
Early-Show2886@reddit
Okay, maybe they are descendants of the Vallahades or Turks from Thessaloniki who came to Turkey in 1923.
But the province of Kirklareli is completely different.
Especially the Demirköy district.
It's rural here, and many Pomaks live here too. If they were interested, it would be more like Bulgaria.
NebelNator_427@reddit
lol really? Isn't there some kind of rivalry between Türkiye and Greece?
Significant-Ad-7182@reddit
Eh. The level of rivalry between Greece and Turkey pales in comparison to the rivalry between some farmers in Turkey due to land disagreements.
ZapruderFilmBuff@reddit
Croatia by far. A country of 2m people made over 2.2m stays in Croatia last year. That doesn’t include people who have property there.
AP_dreamer@reddit
Yep, although I’m tired of crowds and prices in Croatia so now I often go to Italy a bit off season instead (june or september). 🤷♀️
DifficultWill4@reddit
Same. I chose Spain, Portugal and Greece for the past 4 years. And I paid the same price for an all inclusive hotel in Spain as I would in Croatia for an apartment in Croatia
The only people still going to Croatia are people with properties on the Croatian coast and larger families
1970ivan@reddit
Why don't you guys go to Malta or some tropical destinations like se asia or bahamas? Or Australia and New Zealand if you can with your passport?
You have the most time, money and strongest passport out of all of us I am surprised you go to those "close to home" destinations
buteljak@reddit
I often hear the reason "starting vacation as soon as possible" slovenians can be in istria in 2.5 hours by car. They stick to the commodity of close destination and familiarity. Ofc now that Croatia is too expensive, they are choosing other destinations, but they still come to croatia in large numbers. I am not surprised. I am more surprised by czechs and polaks, why they choose to come to croatia is such numbers.
1970ivan@reddit
Croatia is nice don't get me wrong, but if I was a Slovene that's been there (and around) his whole life I would want to change it up a bit (like buy a US cruise tour)... And btw I think the problem with summer vacations today is not the price, it's the sun, the ozone layer is weak and you will be burned wherever you are from 11 to 18 so there is no point anymore, people just go by inercia today when they have time off in the summer to places that they are familiar with... And that means you can charge them
buteljak@reddit
Yup i agree. As i said, slovenes travel a lot actually. To indonesia, thailand, america, crete, south america etc. they just do it outside of summer. I work for travel health support for croats and slovenes so i can confirm. But for those two weeks in summer, they still come to croatia just cuz the destination is like right there. They can take their bikes which they adore, lounge around, visit multiple places and dont have to worry if sth happens how will they get back. They pack heavy, and can pack again any time if they decide it's enough. They save money a lot by bringing their own food etc. a Slovene can correct me, cuz this is my generalization when speaking with them. Their vacation and their travel period are different things.
1970ivan@reddit
Damn how much time off do they have per year?
AP_dreamer@reddit
I confirm everything that buteljak mentioned. Many slovenes travel a lot around the world. I traveled large part myself, but at the moment with two small kids it’s easier to go by car. 🤷♀️ Otherwise NZ and Australia are still less common destinations because they are more expensive and more or less take the most travel time. Same for Hawaii and French Polynesia and such destinations. And we get from 20-35 days of vacation - depends on workplace, how many years have you worked already, education, dangerous work and such. By law we have to take 2 weeks of vacation at once, the rest can be spread through the year as we want. Plus if you don’t use all of your vacation days in one year you can transfer 10 days to next year and you need to use it by the end of june. 🤷♀️ So if you have 35 vacation days plus 10 from last year you can have 45 vacation days in one year. 😅 And yes, most don’t really realize this is quite a luxury in the world. 😅
1970ivan@reddit
Honestly I thought you would have more, you get standard 28 in Serbia plus a few days based on the same thing you mentioned, but there is an ad going on for Belgium blue collar job saying it's a 7 week off vacation every year so idk if that is a scam or a norm there
buteljak@reddit
Idk honestly. 5 weeks?

Soo weird how many people are saying Greece😳 like there's soo many other amazing countries. When I asked my girlfriend if she'd also come visit Serbia, BiH, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Macedonia or Transnistria with me she said "Hmm and what about Greece maybe?" what is there about Greece that other countries don't have I am confused😳 not saying Greece is bad btw there is just this weird focus in many people.
Martin_yoro@reddit
Its the salty wet blueish stuff surrounding land i guess
NebelNator_427@reddit
Well Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Црна Гора have that too
ExoticAd7546@reddit
The water in Bulgaria is not that nice for pictures 😂 However to some extent I personally prefer it as it is way less salty than in Greece. Beaches are 99% with fine sand which is not always the case in Greece but there is way too much construction on the beaches and often the service sucks
Martin_yoro@reddit
How are Bulgaria for tourist? a swedish family for example.
ExoticAd7546@reddit
It can be nice if you choose the spot wisely. Most people just know Sunny Beach which is a place for alchohol turism and overcrowded.
Martin_yoro@reddit
Yes and all of them are more popular for tourism.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Are you serious?
NebelNator_427@reddit
Yes I am. It is just weird to me that Greece and Italy are the only countries Germans can think of with their holiday. I've had such an amazing time in Serbia twice already and I'll see Transnistria next winter. Many people miss out on that and idk why?
Martin_yoro@reddit
Be happy and keep it secret😉
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Because Italy and Greece have much more to offer, it's a different league. There are other interesting countries to visit, but some countries are essential.
xxbronxx@reddit

freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Elafonissi Beach in Crete 🍹
slight_digression@reddit
Elafonissi is great but it is also overcrowded. Even in September. I understand why, but it is not for me.
There are plenty of other amazing beaches in Crete.
XAHKO@reddit
Can you name some of them other worthy beaches please?
Self-Bitter@reddit
The southern coast of Crete has numerous fantastic exotic beaches not so famous as Elafonisi but still wonderful. Mind though the the terrain is very rough, barren but spectacular. You ll need a car though
slight_digression@reddit
Well, you can always try Balos.
In all seriousness, there are tons of beaches along the coast that are accessible by car. The roads are manageable. I have mostly stayed on the western side of the island.
faramaobscena@reddit
I went twice, the first time I had an amazing time due to it being almost empty, the second time I hated it since there were too many people. Same beach, night and day difference.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
September is still high season, of course it's crowded. Try March.
slight_digression@reddit
That's a very valid point!

euxenios-svartahaf@reddit

We treated ourselves to a 3,5 week coastal journey across Croatia last summer, slowly working our way through Dalmatia, Split, Hvar, Brac, then further south toward Dubrovnik and a handful of quieter coves in between. With prices that sit right up there with the very best Mediterranean destinations, one naturally expects the whole experience to be managed to the absolute highest standards. The Blue Flag beaches we visited had their own distinctive character. The water often carried a subtle, lingering haze that didn’t always clear as hoped, especially after rain or in more sheltered bays. What should have been effortless, refreshing swims occasionally turned into something more memorable, with the occasional unexpected tint or scent prompting a quiet pause before going back in. Conversations with locals and other travelers gently hinted at the challenges some coastal areas still face with wastewater management, even as the flags keep flying proudly. It all left a soft sense that the beautifully polished promotional image doesn’t always line up perfectly with the reality at this price level.
By the end of the trip we found ourselves appreciating the contrast with places like Elounda in Crete, which has become one of our standard destinations for a reason, it simply never disappoints with that consistent, pristine clarity. Still, the online photos from Croatia remain beautifully curated.
MrPsychSiege@reddit
Wtf man you can complain about different problems with Croatian tourism including prices and quality, but clean and clear sea is NOT one of them…that’s a first that that I hear that one
LetterSpiritual8172@reddit
Fair enough, but if you actually Google it for two minutes, you’ll quickly come across current sources that back up exactly what we experienced. We were there last summer for 3.5 weeks along the Dalmatian coast. Persistent haze in the water, occasional brownish tint after rain, and that distinct scent in several Blue Flag bays. Not everywhere, but way more often than the marketing suggests. In 2024/2025 the EU was pumping tens of millions into wastewater projects in precisely these areas (55 mio € for Zadar-Petrcane, 33 mio € for Crikvenica/Novi Vinodolski etc) because many coastal towns continue to discharge untreated or only partially treated sewage, especially after rain. If things have magically improved since last summer, then sure, those premium prices might finally be justified. Until then, places like Domes of Elounda in Crete remain my actual benchmark for what you should get at that price level.
Strategic_Island@reddit
Croatia has cleaner sea than Greece, but sure go on.

So, practically no Balkan countries.
I find Spain, especially Andalusia, beautiful, or islands like Tenerife, etc.
I like Hungary, especially the old Turkish sights like the Gül Baba Türbe in Budapest or the Jakovali Hassan Mosque in Peć, etc.
I also find Dobruja in Romania interesting.
But otherwise, I love islands.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
What islands?
Early-Show2886@reddit
I like Mediterranean islands.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
The Greek islands or somewhere else? Many Turks visit them in summer.
Early-Show2886@reddit
I've never been to a Greek island. I'm afraid that if I say I'm of Turkish origin, they might be hostile towards me, even though my Turkish ancestors never had any contact with Greeks. (Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against you people.) But I'm just worried because I don't know the Turkish-Greek history. Because my Turkish grandparents lived in complete isolation on a small Danube island that no longer exists, Ada Kaleh.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Greek islanders are super chill and hospitable, you don't need to be worried at all. Even islands like Chios that was basically completely annihilated by the Ottomans (Chios Holocaust), the locals have no problem at all with Turks. In fact we get along pretty well.
Early-Show2886@reddit
They would never guess I'm Turkish from my appearance; I don't look like your average Turk. Completely different. Because of my mixed heritage, they wouldn't be able to categorize me ethnically. Yes, maybe I'll visit Crete sometime; I like Cretan music. There's the island of Gökçeada in Turkey, where Greeks also live.
slight_digression@reddit
Keep in mind that a good portion of the income of those islands is Tourism. So not being doo-doo to your customers is a good policy. And they also don't care from what I can tell.
That is one of the reasons why I prefer Crete over the mainland.
In all fairness, in general, people in resorts also are courteous and I have had no issues there as well. This is primarily for Chalkidiki.
Budget-Community-982@reddit

slight_digression@reddit
That's because there is (well are) historic minority of Turks in the country and not attempts of cultural assimilation.
Over the past 15-20 years there has also been a small migration from Turkey. Mostly people come to do business and tend to stay here.
