How much sleep ya’ll getting these days?

It feels like just yesterday I’d be up until 1 or 2 am, maybe even 3 and sleep until 2 in the afternoon. Last night I got in bed at 9 and couldn’t sleep (a regular occurrence), finally fell asleep at 1am and still got up with my 4:30am alarm. I’m ok though, yesterday was a holiday, I got to sleep in until 6:30
vulgarvinyasa2@reddit
Fall asleep by 1, up by 8 at the latest depending on the kids.
Redditdotlimo@reddit
6-8 hours a night.
randomgirl201034@reddit
If you're a woman, perimenopause is a sleep killer. I'm 47 and just started HRT and omg it's a game changer. Full night of sleep every night. The best!
Spiritual-Promise402@reddit
Same, all of a sudden I wasn't able to sleep through the night, THEN I wasn't able to fall asleep at night, and when I did finally fall asleep, I would wake up anywhere between 12-2 pm and was so exhausted during the day. So I changed a few things:
Took almost 6 months for this routine to stick. Especially since I'm a light sleeper and my cat is up with zoomies at 4 am. Now I fall asleep without Melatonin between 10-11 and wake up naturally by sunrise. So I changed my disruptive routine from sleeping 4-5 hrs a night to 7-8 hrs (aiming for 9!) My goal was to train my body so well that I didn't need alarms
IvenaDarcy@reddit
How do you feel with this new schedule? Much better I assume? Asking because sometimes I wonder if I’m nocturnal by nature and will never be a morning person.
IvenaDarcy@reddit
What dosage are you on and pill? Patch? Gel?
Adventurous_Pin_344@reddit
I need to get my hormone levels checked.
I had a wicked bout of insomnia last night. I just looked at my Fitbit app and I had a good 1.5 hour stretch when I was wide awake last night.
I have MS, and it feels like sleep disruptions hit me harder. I feel like absolute death today.
stronghikerwannabe@reddit
HRT are the best!
Sweet_Deeznuts@reddit
This, except I’m leaning hard into the insomnia on some nights because I have an 8 year old on the spectrum that will wake up anywhere from 1-3am and stay awake all day until bedtime again
He’s actually the reason that we found out iron deficiency/anemia is linked to insomnia/sleep trouble. It got so bad at one point he was waking up super early 5 nights out of the week and only sleeping through for 2, now that he’s been on extra iron, it’s the reverse. He has ARFID, so it can be tricky to keep his levels consistent on some days
Last night/this morning was a 2am wakeup. Husband took first shift, I’ve been up since 4am 😬
MidnightCoffeeQueen@reddit
Hey there, i am also a fellow parent of an autistic kid(age 10) with ARFID who is a ridiculous light sleeper. Just wanted to offer a hug.
We found that the weighted blanket really does work. Like 5 or 6 years ago, i couldnt afford one when they were really expensive and just resigned myself to have a bed invader every night from somewhere between 1 and 4 am who likes to burrow against me and I roast at night. Plus any therapy they did with weighted lap blankets did nothing for him, so i figured it wouldnt work.
We finally got one a month ago and he actually sleeps through the night in his own bed and has only bed invaded twice due to nightmares. So only 2 nights in this last month did I get shit sleep because he could stay asleep. That is a major win. We did the weighted blanket that is 10% of his weight. It was 35ish dollars on amazon. Worth every damn penny. I am hoping this could work for y'all too. My son is both sensory seeking and sensory adverse, so the weighted blanket worked well for him.
As for food and ARFID, dinner time became a psychological battle every night for probably 6 or 7 years, but I can say that making that your hill to die on is worth it. I know its asking a lot because you are already pouring from an empty energy cup. If you want to know the steps we took to manage that, let me know.
Expensive_Air965@reddit
I was just told by my DR that my body pain is because I am dangerously low on vitamin D I also have ARFID. I am so sorry you are dealing with this. My son is 29 now but has ADHD and Autism with a healthy dose of executive dysfunction depression and anxiety so I hear you mama. I was a nanny for kids with developmental difficulties and I also worked in a school that did the same. If you need any support or just need to scream feel free to DM.
DasKittySmoosh@reddit
I’m dying waiting to get into the dr next month. I swear I finally realized I’m definitely 5 years into peri in the past 6 months so I’m in dire need of- I’m hoping it helps sort some stuff out, specifically sleep.
PurpleCatBlues@reddit
I'm 44 and started getting night sweats, which sucks big time! What symptoms did you have before your doctor prescribed HRT? I might look into it.
randomgirl201034@reddit
Terrible PMS physical symptoms and general fatigue were the key ones for me.
exitcode137@reddit
This is what I kept hearing! I finally tried it starting about 1 month ago and … no difference, lol. Except I started bleeding. Womp womp.
Muddy_Wafer@reddit
It can take a while to really work. Several months to a year. And you may need to play with dosages and different forms to see what works for you. It’s very different for each person.
OmegaRainicorn@reddit
Hello my peri-twin! I had the same outcome with my HRT. That’s why I’m in reddit right now at 4 am.
Imnotonthelist@reddit
Keep going with it! Some people experience immediate relief and others have to adjust their doses. Don’t give up 💕

I need to get on better sleep schedule asap. Lately it’s been up until 3-4am and sleep until noon. I have an evening job so it’s fine but the best I felt seems to be when I was in bed by midnight and up around 9am.

Normal. I've always been a night owl so/but I knock off any time between 11p-2a and get up 8-9 like clockwork.

Curious, those that are getting 8 hours a night, what do you do for a living? What about those of you getting 4 or 5? Is there a correlation?

Bed at 10-11 and wake up at 8:30. On the weekends, I get 10-12 hours due to the meds I take. I love it.
professorpumpkins@reddit
I have a 4yo who is awake and ready to rumble at 6am. I try to get into bed by 9pm and sometimes my book destroys all good intentions and I don’t get a solid amount of sleep. Anyway, 6.5-7 hours? I’m now trained to get up at 6am but I’m sure perimenopause also has a hand in that.
CarpetAlternative191@reddit

SlimJim0877@reddit
Usually 6-7 hours on weeknights, 8-10 hours on weekends. I am a night owl but I start work at 7:30 am, so I don't sleep as much as I would like to during the week.

Go to bed around 11. Usually don't fall asleep until 1230. Wake up at 8-9. So pretty good on sleep most nights. Unless I have anxiety, then it's like 4 hours.

Either I’m awake til 2, or I sleep from 11-1, up til 5, and get one more hour hopefully. So 4-5 on average. Perimenopause is a bitch.

I can only sleep 5-6 hours these days. I wake up at 3am and don’t fall back to sleep. Pass out from exhaustion between 9-10.
Kiethblacklion@reddit
I normally go to bed anytime between 11pm and 1am, then get up at 6am to take my son to elementary school (doors open at 7am) and then I go home and get ready for work. On weekends, 2am-3am is the average bedtime and I am still up by 7am. My body is just used to it. Even as a kid I would stay up until 11pm watching tv with my mom.
The only time I go to bed before 10pm is if I am sick.

Weird I did almost exactly like you. Couldn’t sleep fell asleep finally at 1:30 alarm was going off at 5:30. I was so tired. My sleeping pills are having less effect because I’ve been having to rely on them more often. Going to start waning myself off of them so they can work when I need to sleep.

I hear ya. I've got one of those Garmin watches my spouse bought me for my birthday last year. It shows my sleep score and body battery. Basically tells me everything I need to know about how shitty my sleep quality is.
Marijuana helps...
Also... no coffee, or caffinated beverages for me after 11 am or I'm totally fucked.
In my twenties? I could slam Red Bull and Vodkas like anyone else, have a coffee after the bars... and still fall asleep in like 5 minutes, sleep all evening, and get up late on the weekends, or during the weekdays operate on 4 hours of sleep for a full shift.
Ginger630@reddit
Not much. Yay perimenopause.

During the week, same here. I was always up late when my kids were little, doing chores, having some Xbox time, something like that. Now they're grown, I switched tone wning workouts soy body expends some energy enough to let me be asleep by 11.
On the weekends though, it can vary. Now that my wife and I are able to have adult time out by ourselves, it's not uncommon to be up until 1 or 2 am.
grrrbruno@reddit
When I work, these are by times as well.
On a side note, having practically stopped drinking alcohol improved my sleep immensely. I didn't realize it was such a sleep killer until I did Dry January a few years ago, and it took a few more years to almost stop completely

BeneficialType6789@reddit
8-9 hours when I have my 8 year old with me. Sunday they were at their dad’s for the holiday and I slept 13 hours with one pee break. It was glorious.
stronghikerwannabe@reddit
I wake up to train and/or run at 4-4h30 (I have a 6yo and train for a 50 miler so I do lots of runs while he sleeps) I am in bed at 8 pm, read a bit and boom zzz
burnitdwn@reddit
On weekdays, usually im in bed by 2am and try to get to sleep by 3am. Then wake at like 9 for work.
On the weekends if i stay up late and watch the sunrise before I go to bed, then i sometimes still wake up at like 9 without the alarm clock.
I'm working remotely during my cancer treatment and recovery, so i dont have to commute in the morning currently. But, in July when I return to the office, I'll have to wake by like 7 or so. I've always had delayed sleep phases since early childhood, so getting to sleep early is always difficult to impossible. However, I can often get by with just 2-3 hours of sleep.

AppropriateCattle69@reddit
I’m tapering off my antidepressant, and am getting maybe 3 hours per night. Then an hour or so in the afternoons sometimes. Last night I fell asleep at 10, woke up at 2:30 and am currently watching sunrise. It’s fucking miserable.
eufooted@reddit
Why taper off? Moving to something else? When I transitioned from one, I was getting these like. brain zaps ⚡️
I noticed quick eye movements can trigger it too. Very much not fun.
T1sofun@reddit
The zaps are such a bitch.
AppropriateCattle69@reddit
Fucking awful. I was sleeping pretty well last night and then got zapped awake. Never did fall back asleep.
T1sofun@reddit
I feel for you. I’ll never take an SSRI again because of the horrible withdrawals. The zaps will pass eventually! Hydrate like a mofo to get that shit gone faster.
srj864@reddit
That’s interesting you had zaps on a SSRI. My patients generally only complain of brain “zaps” from withdrawal or missed doses of SNRIs like Effexor and Cymbalta.
T1sofun@reddit
I also had the Effexor zaps, which were maybe even worse because they were accompanied by insomnia and restlessness. I guess I’m just apt to zap(t).

Kahnza@reddit
Those brain zaps are withdrawal symptoms. I had them for a year when I quit Prozac like 15 years ago. It was hell. Never again will I take any SSRI/SNRI drugs.
AppropriateCattle69@reddit
Because I’ve been on it for nearly a decade and my life is in a much better place right now, and I want to see if I’m ok without it. I’m also tired of being numb. Yes, I don’t have panic attacks, which is good. But I also don’t feel anything at all really. (I also realize that part of the reason things are “good” now may very well be from the medicine. And if I start to feel like shit again after tapering off, I’ll go back on).
I’m on Effexor, which has an insanely short half-life and if I miss even a single dose I feel it hard the next day. Brain zaps, incredible fatigue, and buckets of sweat. The obvious answer is “well, don’t miss a dose then”, but I’m not thrilled with the concept of being that physically addicted to something that even a single missed dose will send me into withdrawal.
rexy8577@reddit
It took me 6 months to taper off. Heads up you're gonna be overly emotional for a bit since everything is waking back up. But I did this too for similar reasons and feel so much better unmedicated.
iputmytrustinyou@reddit
Effexor is a brutal medication to taper off. You will get through this. ❤️
brainvheart143@reddit
I went through the same with Cymbalta. I had to quit tapering bc I was dizzy when I lay down from all the zaps. What worked was once I was on the smallest dose i would open the capsule and take out more little balls each day. That did it and I was able to taper a little less each day and ease the withdrawals.
JackBlackBowserSlaps@reddit
Just finished my taper, wasn’t crazy bad, but I went super slow. Dropped 10mg over 2 months during the spring/summer, then waited until the next year to drop another 10mg over 2 months… 4 years later I have just finished dropping the last 10mg. Sleep was defi messed up over this last drop. Still unsure if I am gonna fully drop the sleeping pill that accompanied the SSRI, or keep the last bit on.
Starkravingbrie@reddit
I’m up at 6 at the latest. Doesn’t matter when I go to sleep. My body has decided I wake up then. I am thankful the insomnia has calmed down. Years of a few hours of sleep a night was hard.

lcapictures@reddit
I go to sleep at about 11-11:30-ish which is too late for me, but my kids are all night owls and the night time routine takes forever!
My alarm is at 7:15am. This makes it just shy of 8 hours for me which is not enough. I need at minimum 10 hours! I’m super sleep deprived, which I know sounds ridiculous but I need so much sleep. It’s an issue, actually!! 😆
Looking forward to my kids getting older and not having a huge elaborate bedtime routine, so I can go to bed much earlier, and get at least 1 extra hour of sleep per night.
Should mention I’m on HRT for perimenopause, but I haven’t noticed any difference with sleep and HRT. Sleep wasn’t one of the issues that I started taking HRT for, I was not/ am not dealing with insomnia or night sweats.
(The HRT has helped my crippling anxiety- that was the biggest issue I was dealing with! And I definitely feel better in that department!)

I still don't get into bed until between 1 and 3 am. If I try and get into bed before midnight my body won't let me fall asleep, and I take a prescription to help me sleep on top of magnesium and melatonin every night. Thankfully I don't have any specific start time for work since I've worked remotely way before it became so normal since Covid but I still make sure I get up between 7 and 9.
My goal is always to get in bed early so I can start getting up by 6. I've only ever managed to do this as an adult a handful of times.

Little tip for those of use who always have trouble staying asleep: try creatine.
Since I started taking it daily, I have less brain fog, possibly because I can sleep uninterrupted for 7-8 hours. I get more deep sleep (up to 12% from ~4%, according to my Polar watch).

I have about 5mg of THC or take a magnesium pill and get 7-8 hours. Otherwise I tend to wake up too often and end up getting 5-6 hrs.
ineffable_my_dear@reddit
12ish.
I have ME/CFS but also insomnia so I gotta be drugggged in order to fall/stay asleep. I’m also N24, where I used to have delayed phase sleep disorder, so now my bedtime shifts back incrementally every day. I woke up at 1am today and probably won’t go back to sleep until tomorrow evening.
Horizontal_Bob@reddit
6 hours typically. More on the weekends
YEMolly@reddit
Why are all your people waking up at 4 and 5am?! 😱 I have to be at work at 8:30am & am usually getting out of bed around 7:30am.
Ineedavodka2019@reddit
In bed by 9. Wake up between 1-2. Fall back asleep around 3-4. Get up at 6 if I’m working otherwise I sleep in.
Cubelock@reddit
7-8 hours, but it used to be worse a while back.
My sleep got so much better when I started taking Magnesium supplements. I can sleep like a teenager again.
Puzzleheaded_Bag9063@reddit (OP)
I use magnesium sometimes, it helps. Melatonin too. They both make me groggy tho
PIG20@reddit
I have been taking magnesium for a long time now but either I need to up the dosage or maybe add Melatonin to the mix at this point? The Magnesium alone doesn't feel like it's doing much for me on its own any longer.
zoddie3@reddit
I just had a friend buy some for me at Costco. I'm praying to the sleep gods that they help me sleep. I'm so tired.
YEMolly@reddit
I average about 6 hours, which is more than I use to sleep. I’ve struggled with insomnia my whole life & I slowly seem to be sleeping more as I age.
Rubik842@reddit
Read about Biphasic sleep. It's a quite natural. One big sleep is not. try it for a while it may work for you.
TrentWolfred@reddit
Dude, I was just about to roll over and fall back asleep, but then your comment sent me down a sort of rabbit hole: first Wikipedia, then PubMed, then a couple of health influencer’s channels. Now, it’s three hours later, the sun’s starting to come up, and I’m jerking off to illustrations of Victorian women, fantasizing about their interrupted sleep.
Am I doing it right?
Rubik842@reddit
Victorian women, it's all about those ankles am I right
rebelangel@reddit
In college, I would regularly stay up till 2am watching Adult Swim. Now, it’s a struggle to make it to midnight. I go to bed around 9pm on weeknights, but I’ll stay up a little later on weekends to game or watch SNL on Saturdays.
muthermcreedeux@reddit
Asleep between 10:30 and 11:30, up at 7. I get up to pee 3 or 4 times a night most nights, so I probably get closer to 6-7 hours of sleep. The best part is I usually only have to actually pee 1 or 2 times but my brain will not let me go back to sleep until I try. So dumb. Super over it.
I can't go on HRT because of high risk of breast cancer, but I'm on the pill to skip my period, and that's sort of helping.
zoddie3@reddit
I developed a body clock and I hate it.
Sleep used to be my super power. I just added 8 hours to whenever I fell asleep. Fall asleep at 11:30? Wake up at 7:30am. Crash at 2:45am? Wake up at 10:45am.
Now I'm awake at 6:50am. Couldn't fall asleep and then tossed and turned all night? AWAKE AT 6:50. It sucks and I hate it. My brain also will just keep me awake in the middle of the night if I wake up and my brain turns on.
I'm getting Magnesium Glycinate this week and I really hope it helps.
katiw46@reddit
If I get 5-6 hours, I'm happy. The past week or so, I've been waking up after 3.5 hours and not able to get back to sleep and I'm miserable.

9pm is my sleep time so 830 getting ready and getting in bed. Up at 3, working at 4. About 6 hrs, but typically once or twice a week I’ll be in bed by 7 ish, just cause I’m tired or a long day etc…
JackBlackBowserSlaps@reddit
I need sleep, can’t function without it. I schedule in 8 each night, can usually get 7-8. I take trazodone for sleep tho.
Wak3upHicks@reddit
8pm to 4 am. But I work 6 to 6 and walk 40k steps a day so I earned that exhaustion that enables the ease at falling asleep
Seraphtacosnak@reddit
Same except my wife works at home at 6am and I leave around that time to work at 7.
We sometimes watch anime since my youngest likes to use my shower at night usually right when we get to bed.
NYTatt2Chick@reddit
If I’m lucky I get 4.5-5 hours. On a really good night I’ll get 6, but that’s rare. I’m in bed no later than 10pm, but it takes me forever to fall asleep and wake up a lot throughout the night. I do need back surgery, so moving in my sleep hurts and wakes me up. It’s not fun. I’m also up around 5:30-6 every day.
NYTatt2Chick@reddit
Exhibit A. Last night wasn’t that bad. I only woke up like 5 times lol
lost_horizons@reddit
Usually asleep by 11 ish, and wake at 6 or 6:30. So 7 hours is my average. I fall asleep easily and sleep well with little midnight waking, usually, but should be getting to bed a bit earlier as I’m often tired and will try to catch a power nap when possible
bb79@reddit
In bed with a book by 8, asleep at 9. Wake at 6, do the gym. So 9 hours, sometimes 10 on weekends.
KdawgEdog@reddit
Normally in bed around 10 and up at 6am, almost every day of the week.

Not enough, that’s for damn sure. I try to be in bed by 10 to be up at 5:30. I don’t sleep through the night. It’s basically a series of naps.
throwaweigh1245@reddit
I’m pretty similar. I found I can get pretty great sleep again if I cut out all alcohol and foods/ liquids basically 3-4 hours before bed. During the week I’ll get that sometimes but not always
hadesscion@reddit
Generally 4-6 hours.
Some nights I don't sleep at all due to pain and/or my brain not wanting to turn off.

jamescockroft@reddit
In bed by 10, 10:30, up around 4 (if I sleep until the alarm goes), and often 2 or 2:30 due to insomnia. I work from home and so a 4:30am start means 8 hours happens by noon thirty. I’m salaried and so usually work till 2pm, then catch a nap.
I more count sleep cycles than hours. One sleep cycle for me is around 80 minutes. I catch between 4 and 6 sleep cycles at night and then 1 in the afternoon most days.

My biggest issue is that it is very hard for me to sleep in on my days off during the summer. Even with a blindfold on, my sleep seems to be controlled by the sun and I find it difficult to sleep much last an hour after sunrise.
So even on the weekends during the summer I am getting up at like 6 am. During the winter though when the sun doesn't come up til 8 I sleep til then.

melydi85@reddit
I go to bed anywhere between 830-10pm and wake up at 430-5(without an alarm, my body just knows it’s morning) I have never been a night owl, I never have been able to stay up past 11-12. but never been an early bird until last few years. But I have never been one to sleep past 9(was horrid in high school when I’d be bored out of my mind while all my friends would snooze until early afternoon). And I sleep solid through the night, always have, thank god because when I go without sleep, I’m the equivalent to hangry people with no food.
cloudydays2021@reddit
I’m in bed by 10 on weekdays and up at around 6am, so usually 7.5 hours of sleep.
Weekends - totally depends on my plans. If I’m out at a concert, I might not hit the bed til 1-2am and I’ll sleep til 10-11am. If I’m not doing much, I will just let myself fall asleep when my body says to and wake naturally without an alarm. Usually 8-10 hours of sleep on weekends.
_buffy_summers@reddit
I'm not getting enough sleep, or not sleeping at the right times. My husband is in the hospital, in a nearby city. So I spend a lot of time commuting back and forth every day. I've been exhausted, so going to bed around nine o'clock and waking up every couple of hours, until I give up on sleep around three.
Silentbrouhaha@reddit
I’m narcoleptic, so I take stuff that knocks me out. I have to get up for a second dose, but ideally, that second dose should keep me asleep. Nope. Maybe 2 hours later? I’m awake

I always fall asleep on the couch before midnight and then wake up around 2AM. Then, I turn off the TV and lights and hit the bed. Where I then can usually fall back asleep until my alarm goes off around 5:15AM. Usually hit snooze once or twice.
Long gone are the days of being able to sleep past 8AM on a weekend though. My mental alarm just won't let me sleep into the later morning or early afternoon like I did when I was younger.
If I somehow sleep more than 8 hours, I feel like ass the next day. Juat a very worn our feeling.

These days, between 5 to 7 hours on average. I work mostly afternoon and evening shifts, so I typically fall asleep sometime after 5 am and wake up around noon. The kicker is that I have a back injury that wakes me up every 2-3 hours and forces me to reposition or even sit/stand for a few minutes to work out the kinks. Good times.

Bedtime is 8, alarm is 4 but I wake up about 345. usually up to pee about 130. I can't sleep more than about 7 hours but on off days I ALWAYS nap after lunch which can be 45m to an hour and a hald. It's a bad habit because I'm garbage at work after lunch when it's nap time at home.
