How would you fare if you had to wear the shoes you are currently wearing (or most recently wore if barefoot) for the rest of your life?
Posted by Flaky-Walrus7244@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 188 comments
Here's the rules: whatever shoes you currently have on, are the only shoes you can ever wear again forever. If you aren't wearing shoes, you can only put on the ones you most recently wore. These shoes will never change. They won't wear out or develop holes, but also if they are currently worn-down or have holes, those will never be fixed.
How are you faring?
For me I'm stuck for life with some fairly boring but practical Skechers slip-ons. They are quite comfy and would do fine except they'll be cold in the winter. Could certainly have done worse.
fords42@reddit
Slip on Skechers gang, assemble!
quoole@reddit
Me too! I already wear them in all seasons and I'd love to have a pair that never wear out - can this challenge become real? š
OldChorleian@reddit
They are actually a bit redder of a brown - more like drinking chocolate, but comfy and convenient.
JoesRealAccount@reddit
My gf says mine look like orthopedic shoes for an old person but they comfy. Wore out really quickly at the back though where I slip my foot in.
Flaky-Walrus7244@reddit (OP)
Mine did as well until I got and regularly used a shoe horn. Now the backs remain undamaged for years. Highly recommended!

I am here for this. I've got Skechers Men's Max Cushioning Glide Step Aberdeen Hands Free Slip-ins. It's like walking on clouds, and they're a dream to put on and take off. They don't look too bad, either.

Pair of £15 trainers from Shein.
Before anyone starts -
They are made in the same factories using the same materials as any brand-name trainers. If anything I feel better because I'm not paying an extra £100-£200 which just goes to the CEO of Nike.
They weigh less than the box they came in, which was initially concerning, but are as comfortable as a pair of slippers and having walked around in them in the wet (including through wet grass - the ultimate test for footwear waterproofness, outside of actually wading through a river) they keep my feet bone dry.
They say "FASHION" on the side then "SS-SKH" on the tounge, whatever the hell that means. But I like the fact I'm not walking around with a label on and paying a premium to advertise for some big-name company. Mate is a youth leader (wears similar trainers) and points this out to the kids, well, largely teenagers, when they're all wanting the latest most expensive trainers.
They've outlasted a £250 pair of New Balance that I got given for free and wore way less often.
flyingokapis@reddit
No one was going to start, you just wanted too tell us about your list of points 1-4.
RecentTwo544@reddit
People constantly act like Shein are the devil and are somehow worse than any other big name company.
JuniorToe3327@reddit
I mean Shein really are not good - you can choose to buy other brands that are ethically made and sustainable rather than Nike or Adidas.
RecentTwo544@reddit
Such as? I often ask this when it comes up, and there's never a good alternative.
Lots of "British made" clothing, most in fact, still sources material from such factories abroad.
Even a tailor-made suit will likely include textiles and materials made in such factories in Bangladesh or the like. We haven't had a textile industry for a long long time in the UK.
JuniorToe3327@reddit
I get it thatās nothing is perfect and there is a long way to go for all brands but off the top of my head
Veja - B-Corp generally considered sustainable and ethical leaders in the sneaker world
Merrell - recycled materials and PFAS free
Asics - still a long way to go but probably the leader in terms of āpopular brandsā
Rab - British outdoor brand who are āLeadersā in ethical labour leadership
Iām sure there is loads more but just google it and see what comes up
RecentTwo544@reddit
Just done some Googling, and a lot of them seem to be "questionable" and a lot of their stuff is either marketing fluff, or based more on "our materials are recycled/organic" but not so much about the people making them.
Veja - From Wikipedia "Veja has not published any results of social audits for many years nor are there any certificates for the company's self-acclaimed fair-trade standards available." They're also made in deepest Brazil, so I'm very wary of the labour laws on that one.
Merrell - again, quick look on their "about us" and they claim to use recycled materials, but nothing about where they're made and by whom. Again, I could hazard a guess...
Asics - you sum it up yourself. A quick Google suggests they're made in Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and Cambodia. So, yeah....
Rab - again, not much I can find to prove their claims. And indeed not much on their website about it either in terms of claims anyway. A fair bit about "sustainability" but that feels more like a powerpoint presentation the marketing team put together.
I'm not having a go at you or indeed anyone really. It's a shit show. That's the modern world for you. I just think it's unfair Shein get a bad rep for no reason compared to any other brand.
JuniorToe3327@reddit
Out of curiosity have you seen the documentary on Shein? Maybe it was a channel 4 expose thing? I do think the aspect of it being so cheap makes it extremely disposable and there for way worse for the environment as people donāt care about it and it ends in landfill.
I completely agree and if I could afford to Iād only buy from brands like Story MFG who do openly talk labour costs and natural dyes etc
RecentTwo544@reddit
That is an issue, but I solve that by not buying a new wardrobe every 15 second and binning the old one.
I'm currently wearing a lovely pair of Shein combat pants that are over four years old and holding up just fine.
Meanwhile my "work" ones my wife bought me from Bershka have gone all bobbly.
JuniorToe3327@reddit
You might be the 0.1% who makes it last and doesnāt treat it as waste, but when the majority of its customer do, you can understand how it has this name. We havenāt even discussed the child labour element really.
RecentTwo544@reddit
We have discussed the child labour element, I addressed it in my initial comment.

M&S leather boots. With a nice dominant click clack heel. Think Chelsea boots. My favourite boots.
Theyāre easy and cheap to resole. The leather polishes up a delight regardless of how much I abuse them, but theyāre at least 500-1000 miles away from needing restoration

Awfully. £8 ballet pumps already worn with holes in and all sorts of things spilled on them, they're my around the (being renovated) house shoes. The soles are genuinely painfully thin. Would much prefer my docs or my trainers, which I wear if I'm actually going anywhere.

Iām currently some brown adidas trainers which are comfortable and probably good enough for smart-casualā¦

As in that very pair? They are a fairly new pair of Nike free runs, actually my 3rd pair but the last pair were still in decent shape after over 5 years of almost constant use (I still own but the soles were getting too soft).

They are insanely comfy Kaptir 3s, a black and white pair, but I have a fully black pair I wear for work. I think quite well as you could get away with them for most things, and theyāre comfy, can walk miles in them, could play most sports in them if itās just at a joke around level.
It would only be very formal occasions where I would have an issue, weddings etc. I work in Wealth Management in a relatively senior role and chinos or smart trousers, a Charles Tyrwhitt button up and the fully black version of these shoes is fine (Iām not client facing though, obviously). So smart casual is fine.
The only other issue might be intently heavy rain, snow and the like, where they would be a nightmare.
I thought about this entirely too much, 8.5/10.
BobDude65@reddit
I wear the same shoes everywhere, always have. Maybe itās an autistic thing or something but Iāll have 4 or 5 pairs of shoes that I like but Iāll only wear 1 pair until theyāre knackered or some other reason and then switch to another pair for months and months.
