For example, even if you’re not into football, once you know Dick Butkus was a real person, you’ll never forget his name.

My girlfriend is a huge Packers fan. It became a drinking game every time he was mentioned we’d yell his name and drink.
Now since I’m a Colts fan anytime Jonathan Taylor gets mentioned we’d yell “Thomas!” and drink.

Wolf Blitzer, a name that should have gone to a football player but instead went to a nerdy reporter

Cecil Fielder is a classic baseball name. How could you be anything other than a baseball player with a name like that?
His son Prince Fielder had a good career in baseball too.

The late NASCAR driver Dick Trickle. (Seriously though, guy was a racing legend and mentored a lot of younger drivers. Took his own life due to chronic pain. RIP)
CFBCoachGuy@reddit
It can’t be said how good of a driver he was. This was a man who at 9 years old was never expected to walk again. He broke his hip in an accident and it never fully healed properly. Growing up poor in rural Wisconsin, he plowed fields for local farmers and worked in a mechanic’s shop starting at age 13. He started building his own race cars by age 17, and started winning races soon after.
He didn’t compete full time in NASCAR until he was 48 years old (and he still won rookie of the year). He never bothered with it because he was making so much money competing in weekly short track races all over the U.S. He competed in over 150 races a years and won over 1200 races in his career. We’re not even sure what his total earnings were, but for most of the 1970s and 1980s he was the highest-earning racing driver in North America- regardless of discipline. He may have possibly been one of the highest-earning athletes in general during this time.
madtowntripper@reddit
Those are interesting facts. I grew up in central Wisconsin and he was a legend here but I didn't really follow racing at the time. I thought he was a middling driver - had no idea he had that story.

Years and years ago I met a family with the name Johnson at a church I attended. Dad's name was Rod and the son's name was Peter. They had a second son they name Jonathan Thomas (John Thomas).
Every time I talked to them I wanted to ask if they were just really into penises.

There is a bridge in my hometown that is named after him. It goes between Minnesota and Wisconsin. That's in contrast to the other bridge named after John Blatnik which was taller than the Bong Bridge , so was always called "the high bridge".
So we had the Bong Bridge and the High Bridge.
