HMO: Ferrari waited for TGT to retire, before hinting an interest in Electric Vehicles š

That's it... that's the whole point.

I don't understand why all electric cars have to look like these weird art deco ornaments with wheel?
Why cant they just make a Camry or Corolla EV?
AgroMachine@reddit
Drag coefficient
hatlad43@reddit
The Prius has had a very low coefficient of drag since the early 2000s, but it didn't have art deco-esque design. It's always on EV from the 2020s.
themcsame@reddit
The 5th gen prius doesn't exactly look that far removed from this honestly.
Not enough to mistake one of the other, but there's certainly a resemblance.
ThatOneTimeItWorked@reddit
While yes, thatās important for electric vehicles, I donāt understand why thatās not also an equal priority for some ICE (or even hybrid) vehicles? Economy or efficiency either is or should be a priority for many mass-market vehicles. I donāt understand why there isnāt the same emphasis for non-electric vehicles.
Ngklaaa@reddit
Radiators. Different needs for air flow. Different traction requirements (ev buyers care more comparatively about range than grip for example, maybe).
Crazy_Rip_4914@reddit
But we are talking about a Ferrari. Not your average consumer vehicle
AgroMachine@reddit
Yea and if Ferrari released an EV that had a 110 mile range it would sink like dead weight. I see this sinking as well though.
Crazy_Rip_4914@reddit
Right you are. I think the reality is that nobody can see what market segment this is looking for. If they built a 1000hp track weapon EV that did 110 miles on charge it would be a game changer. If they made it a grand tourer EV that you could carve the amalfi coast in. That works. What this thing is.. 4 doors. Ugly. Confused interior (why is the ipad on an ergo arm) not racecar, not cruiser. I feel like they wanted a tesla, and have only just caught up to 2014 model S. Nothing special, nothing worth looking at really. Its a damn shape to stick a ferrari badge on stellantis detritus
AgroMachine@reddit
Yea to be clear Iām not defending this. I quite like the design, if it were a 35k VW. For over half a million pounds itās just terrible. When I first saw it I actually thought Ferrari were targeting a sub 100k family car, but no.
b_e_a_n_i_e@reddit
It's a Ferrari. They're supposed to be weekend cars used on a track, or for driving at 3mph through Monaco. The owners don't care about range or drag coefficients
AgroMachine@reddit
Itās a Ferrari? Itās a shit box!
I agree, but that is why theyāve shaped it this way. Seems like the vision is to have this be an ultimate luxury EV in terms of user experience and quality of materials. Idk whether they weighed it up and just thought a performance EV would be wank. You donāt see that many 2 door performance EVs anymore
Bar50cal@reddit
The current BMW G20 3 series has a lower drag coefficient than most EVs
AgroMachine@reddit
The beemer has a smaller cross sectional area than a lot of EVs
Crazy_Rip_4914@reddit
Vauxhall calibra was one of the lowest c.d vehicles and that still looks pretty good considering the 30 some years that have passed
gorleston-mega-snake@reddit
The wheels in that photo are the best part, just simple five spokes.
REMA5TER@reddit
I mean, they do make those.. you just don't notice because.. they look like Camrys and Corollas..Ā
MJLDat@reddit
WTH is that?Ā
KJPicard24@reddit
Who is going to spend £500k on a Ferrari, electric or otherwise, that looks quite mundane. It's nothing special whatsoever.
If I didn't know it was a Ferrari already, you could badge it up as some new electric Volvo R Design and I'd have believed you.
bluAstrid@reddit
Itās the « Hermes iPhone caseĀ Ā» of EVs.
Tasteless, ugly, boring, and prohibitively expensive.

I think the car proves that Jony Ive is not a car designer.
SpeckiLP@reddit
Looks like a luxury toaster trying really hard to be futuristic
burtmacklynfbi@reddit
His firm only did the interior interface, right?
JCD_007@reddit
Iām unclear on that. Iāve read multiple articles that varyingly say he did the interior or that his firm did the whole car.
burtmacklynfbi@reddit
From this picture, itās hideous. Very disappointing. If they were chasing aero gains to extend the range, then Ferrari has lost touch. They were never about fuel efficiency.
WySLatestWit@reddit
It's hideous.
someguyinMN@reddit
It's so bad I am suspicious that he was set up to prove Ferrari EVs won't sell.
Fearless_Swim4080@reddit
Decent theory honestly, like do they not speak to their customers? Or did they have like 100 rich dudes who said theyād pay ā¬500k for an EV sedan and the development/build cost was half that so they figured theyād go for it?
Also, like yes, a āFerrari EVā should have 1000+ hp. But which Ferrari buyer in general would give a shit how much range it has? Most are taken out on a Saturday for a few hours and sit the rest of the time if theyāre driven at all, but theyāre selling an ev sedan for picking up groceries or driving your kids to school?
Like the first Ferrari EV should be more like the Volkswagen ID-R, just a race focused something to beat a very specific record in style.
Also also, Itās not a collector car because EVs in general are a bit of a fire hazard in garagesā¦
Corsair4@reddit
It's about tradeoffs.
Yes, it's absolutely hideous inside and outside, but at least the performance is solidly underwhelming compared to other high end EVs, at least it costs several times what any of it's competitors do, and they're only several years late to the party as other high end EV manufacturers pull back because of collapsing demand.
I can only assume there's some weird time dilation fuckery going on at Maranello, and this is their april fools announcement 7 weeks late, because if they actually think this is a compelling product in any way, fucking lol. They are competing with Jaguar as far as "worst EV strategy possible", and Jaguar shut down the rest of the damn company.
I almost feel bad for the guys who want the next limited edition Ferrari, they're gonna have to buy a dozen of these things to get on the list.
Fearless_Swim4080@reddit
I mean, I disagree on the inside, that's actually quite nice (from the drivers seat at least, the rear bench is properly wrong) and anyone trying to bring back tactile controls is a big win in my book.
That said, I just want to understand the voice of the customer process here. If their collectors ACTUALLY wanted this because it was weird, won't sell well, and has a big name designer behind it, fine, sell your concept car, but I just don't see how this fits into their product line at all while maintaining their reputation as Ferrari.
This could absolutely be an independent EV design for $100K or fall into another badge with slight modifications (they're smoking crack at $600K though) but Ferrari? Come on.
Corsair4@reddit
Any points they get for switchgear are lost by the rear axle noise they are playing through the speakers to replace the engine.
Great. Everyone knows that the pinnacle of automotive sound design is... the rear axle. they're on to something here.
On a side note, I absolutely love that article, it's the the most pretentious, Mad Men sounding writing I've ever seen.
If this was like, a 60k commuter EV, the interior design would be fine. The materials are probably nice, but that doesn't really make up for the rest of it. The fact that it's over 600k for an Ipad, and a pivoting Ipad is hilarious.
Fearless_Swim4080@reddit
Errrr that has nothing to do with my above comment, wrong person?
Corsair4@reddit
Errrrr, the first part of your comment is talking about interior design.

Ferrari know their customers donāt want EVs. This car is guaranteed to flop and then Ferrari will use this as testament to never build another EV.

nitfizz@reddit
I think the Prius looks nicer. Disregarding that it does not look like a Ferrari, I think it somehow already dated - like an EV from the last few years
GrnMtnTrees@reddit
The new Prius looks a lot less shit than the old ones, at least.
Crazy_Rip_4914@reddit
The new Prius looks 10x hotter than this.
Taucher1979@reddit
If it were a Honda Iād think it looks pretty good tbh. As a Ferrari itās awful.
Khorgor666@reddit
How can a designer at Ferrari look at this and say "Yep, this is it"
Haenkster@reddit
"Like it or you're fired" - simple as that.
Dad-Kisser69@reddit
Not at all what one would expect from Ferrari in terms of design. Itās boring and doesnāt stand out at all. If it didnāt have its badge it couldāve been from literally any car brand on the planet.
bluAstrid@reddit
At least itās a Ferrari so itāll sound fabu- oooh.

Terminal_Phase@reddit
Iām actually quite literally dumbfounded by how bad this is.
This literally looks like one of those concepts that would have come out 10-15 years ago when every car company was making EV concepts that were off the wall.
Absolutely gobsmacked this is going to be making it into production. Absolutely hideous on all fronts.
gorleston-mega-snake@reddit
The wheels in that photo are the best part, just simple five spokes.
Guardsred70@reddit
Thatās awful.
Mascagranzas@reddit
I remember May saying on his Show "Our man in Italy" that he was ready for the future electric Ferrari. I wonder what he thinks now.
Pandemona1738@reddit
To be fair, isn't this gonna be used for the same reason the Mustang made the Mache shit? Just to tick a box to say they are trying with electric to get pressure relief and tax relief from governments?
Ford using the Mustang as the range for an electric vehicle was crazy until i learned the above point behind it, was a fuck you to the electric industry in reality. I am sure Ferrari doing the same thing here?
newMike3400@reddit
Itās an Ive design you canāt even drive it while itās charging.

susanboylesvajazzle@reddit
They will sell every single one of them.

And theyāll sell all of them. Ferrari owners will buy them for their wives or to sit on so they can get whatever the next V10 or V12 car will be.

V10?

Even the wheels look like shit, like some momo design from the early 90s got restamped into 22inches. So poo.

Alternative-Pie1329@reddit
I don't think it looks that bad. Better than a lot of new cars. As an example of contemporary design it's rather nice.
But on what planet is it a Ferrari?
0D1246@reddit
If this was a Hyundai or Polestar (also in pricing) i think we would have looked at this differently. In my opinion it's not ugly but it's not Ferrari.
AboveAverage1988@reddit
Does it have to be ugly, though? I mean, an electric hyper- or super car could absolutely be interesting in todays world, but it just looks like.. a car...
f1hunor@reddit
That's really ugly, and it doesn't even resemble a Ferrari at all. Also: I'm gonna be curious about how will they handle the tonnes of criticism that will inevitably arrive, they are infamous in this aspect for reason...
