I miss actual albums

I downloaded a new album this weekend and realized I really miss having records, tapes, and then CDs, with the inserts. One of my favorite things to do from elementary school into my 20s was sit down and listen to a new album and read the lyrics while listening along. I learned about band members, what they played, who wrote the songs, what they all looked like, and knew all the words to every song after a couple of times through.
Now I hear something I like and just download it. Half the time I don’t even know the band’s name, let alone the names of the members and writers. I miss the effort of it, like having to figure which albums I wanted the most based on how much I could afford. Listening to them in the store. Then taking it to my room as soon as I got home, shutting the door, and living in my own little musical world for an hour.
I think I appreciated the artists more when I still did all that. It’s easy and convenient now, and way cheaper, which is nice. But I just…miss that.
Doordasheasthartford@reddit
Yeah me too I miss old fashion stereo
fshannon3@reddit
Yeah, going through the liner notes of a new CD was pretty cool. It was neat to me to read through the "Thank you" section of each album and see what other artists they'd give a shout-out to.
ratbastid@reddit
My 12 year old daughter has gone deep into music in the last couple months, and primarily consumes it by the album. Without any prompting from me, she said that a song is a moment but an album is an artist's full statement.
Her favorite artists right now are djo and Kate Bush. Five points to anyone who can figure the through-line there.
regularfellar@reddit
Stranger Things for five points, ratbastid
Fluffymanolo@reddit
I have a rather nice LP collection with a nice turntable to actually play them on. Record store day gets me every year!
BlastTyrantKM@reddit
I don't miss the disappointment of opening the liner notes expecting lyrics, but instead have a long list of each band member thanking their entire family one by one, god, their high school band teacher, every living musical artist on the planet and half of the dead artists from the past
VarietyMage@reddit
It was a horrible day when Weird Al Yankovic said in Rolling Stone magazine that he wasn't making albums anymore. Yeah, he's making individual songs, but you'd have to go to his site everyday to check in, and only for one song if you got lucky. New albums were cause for celebration. I keep hoping he'll change his mind, but until then, he's like every other artist that died or retired - just a memory.
Tha_Governalinator@reddit
You can still buy CD's, tapes and records
Last_Blackfyre@reddit
Def miss the CD player in my truck. Miss listening to books on tape while driving.
Stephvick1@reddit
I have CD’s but got rid of my record collection, I had some I got in the early 70’s as birthday/Christmas presents. I wish I had kept them, I had about 400, nothing like sitting down, listening to a record and reading who all had a hand in making it and seeing if there were any special guest musicians. You still can on CD’s but it’s much harder to read, especially now and I hate wearing readers 🤣🤣🤣
Western-Calendar-352@reddit
So, go out and buy actual albums from an actual record store, on the format of your choice, and then play them at home while reading the liner notes. These things all still exist.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
That’s the plan!
Whole_Customer_2111@reddit
I recently picked up a nice CD player at a thrift store. Making a effort now to put in a CD, put on the headphones, lay on the floor and listen start to finish. Like I used to do in my younger days. I'm feeling connected to music again.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m going to start doing that again.
Broodingbutterfly@reddit
Be the change you want to see. I still buy CDs and have a fat case sitting in my car. Breaks my heart when I go to a show and one of the bands doesn't have a physical CD for sale.
melty75@reddit
I miss flipping through the posters at the record store.
Mistervimes65@reddit
I believe in owning your physical media. Life as a subscription service is a losing game.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Yes. Streaming is convenient, and has its uses, but it feels less personal. A record is an experience.
jackwagoneer69@reddit
Why did you get rid of them? You could still have them. You can buy new ones too! If you truly miss albums so much, guess what? Your problem is solvable.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I know, and I’m going to start buying stuff again. I still have tons of CDs. I don’t really know when I stopped. It was just something I noticed and thought about this weekend.
typhona@reddit
All of that information is available online. Its just as easy to find as it is to download a song
b_o_m@reddit
True, but it's just not the same. There is just something about holding the record or CD (or cassettes even!) in your hand, putting on the player...that moment of anticipation before the music starts pumping out of the speakers. Then sitting there with the album sleeve or liner notes in your hand, seeing the pictures, naming the players, the thank yous, the instrument endorsements, the studio it was recorded in, all the inside information. All while the music washed over you in all it's glory. New music used to be an adventure, an event. A ritual.
A screen and earbuds will never replace that. It's not even close.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Yes. The experience was what I loved about it. I could ignore everything else and just live in that moment, all to myself.
Successful-Bank-7457@reddit
I don't miss it. Because I never quit physical albums
Francis_Lynch@reddit
I have so many albums and 7 inches I bought at shows that I need a turntable and good stereo to listen to them. I'm in central Ohio and there are several colleges and universities in the area. All through the 90s I went to clubs and would see bands from all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, upstate NY, Kentucky, ect. Non of this stuff is digitized and I still listen to a lot of it.
b_o_m@reddit
Same here. I've got a bunch of records from local bands from back in the day in the San Jose area, before it was Silicon Valley and all the life got sucked outta the place. All those great bands that never "made it" before the digital revolution let everyone with a laptop put "music" into the universe. There are hundreds if not thousands of great bands that only live on through old vinyl or cassettes.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
It wasn’t on purpose. Streaming is so easy I didn’t notice that I wasn’t doing that anymore. I’m going to start again.
Fabulous-Piglet1721@reddit
I still buy cd’s of my favorite artists and listen to them on repeat in the car. I love reading the inserts. ❤️
ediblepet@reddit
The CD ruined the artwork experience. A vynil album was an opportunity to convey graphic Art, smells, textures and so on. CDs and medialess content can't provide the experience an artist might want to deliver, right now. But I really don't know, someday in the future, who knows
Temporary_View_3303@reddit
I don’t miss it one bit. Digital albums are infinitely easier to manage. I still buy albums but it’s under $10 for a digital copy and $30 on up for a LP. Fuck that noise. Plus my entire several thousand large record collection fits on a little PC rather than taking up a room. And I can stream it wherever I go.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
It is really convenient. I’ll start buying some though. It’s just one of those memories I was thinking about and I could actually do it again.
JJDiet76@reddit
Same! I also miss the thank you’s in the liner notes. I discovered more bands through those. Yeah the lyric sheets though. I probably still remember lyrics from 1990 better than half the stuff at work
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Haha me too!
Hot_Poetry_6475@reddit
get a record player. Vinyl is back! My teenagers each have a record player
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m definitely doing that!
DoookieMaxx@reddit
I miss opening it up, the smells …the entire unpacking experience. Perusing the lyrics and artwork. The visceral feeling of physically engaging the media. All of it.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Yes! Exactly.
Ok-Rock2345@reddit
I lost count of how many albums I bought just because I loved the album covet. Especially when I was a teen.
Also some of them were absolutely creative works of art. For example Alice Cooper's From the Inside. The album cover was better than the actual album.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Metal always has good art!
MaximumJones@reddit
You need two turntables and a microphone.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Perfect!
SergeantChic@reddit
Given the unstable nature of streaming music, I started collecting vinyl (and physical media in general) again last year. There are some nice ones these days. Digging through the record bins at the thrift store is as fun as it ever was. There are also some online stores that sell pretty fancy niche soundtracks and so on. I found the Signalis OST a while back on vinyl.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m going to start doing that again, now that I’m aware I miss it!
Cvilledog@reddit
I was showing my wife the album cover from Iron Maiden’s “Stranger in a Strange Land” today and I pointed out on the back that a news ticker reads, “Latest results … Arsenal 3 … West Ham 7” and she asked me if I scrutinized every little thing in the image. For a second my mind went blank because it was such a nonsensical question. Of course I did, just like I listened to the album while following along with the lyrics and reading the liner notes. So much went into albums beyond just the music. I download albums today and, while I can remember songs and lyrics, I don’t have a feel for any of the bands except those that I have gone to see live and even then it’s probably less than what I got from an album.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m going to start buying them again. I used to look at everything too.
DarkSad4202@reddit
Vinyl is very popular again. I have a turntable and several records, old to new music.
CrispyDave@reddit
CD sales are up too.
WiscoDJ920@reddit
Digital music has no soul.
Bokononfoma@reddit
I started collecting records during COVID, and stopping everything to listen to an album is not one of my favorite things. No phone, internet, reminders, etc. Just focusing on the music and the lyrics and filtering everything else out is such a treat.
Successful-Bank-7457@reddit
I think you meant to write now instead of not
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Exactly! I’m going to start again now that I’ve noticed how much I missed it
jstbnice@reddit
Yup, I also miss the liner notes and the art. I used to listen to my albums with the cover in hand while reading the notes.
Successful-Bank-7457@reddit
I still do
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Me too! It’s one of those things I wasn’t really aware I had stopped doing. I’m going to start again. I really do miss it!
OneCallSystem@reddit
Guess you aren't a metal fan. Its all about albums with metal.
Successful-Bank-7457@reddit
Very true.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I am, most of it. I’m going to start building a new collection.
whyyoutwofour@reddit
This is why I buy vinyl....it only makes up about 5% of my listening, but it it fills that experience of buying fresh new music and sitting down and taking it all in
cowboyJones@reddit
While I love having so much music available, but miss the linear notes and see who bands like or were influenced by.
minder125@reddit
I still buy CDs. Be used or new. And on Amazon you can find these collections of five CDs of an artist cheap.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I hadn’t thought about Amazon, good idea!
minder125@reddit
eBay, discogs and Amazon. I can usually find what I'm looking for.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Cool I’ll check that out too, thanks!
QuellishQuellish@reddit
I've never stopped buying vinyl and I still listen to albums, new and old, at least a couple times a week. Some things are meant to be consumed whole, Floyd, ELO, Doom, lots of stuff.
I listen to Spotify at work and it'll occasionally drive me crazy with some auditory kryptonite that I never authorized. I've been building playlists to avoid the suggestions.
I also play a lot of Midnight Special and random live shows on YouTube.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m going to start buying albums again, now that I’m aware I stopped and I miss it! Some of the recent stuff is fine for streaming but I’m going to start buying more again.
GarionOrb@reddit
Full physical albums are still a thing and readily available. If you prefer those, just buy them.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I know I can. It’s just really easy to not do it.
GarionOrb@reddit
Then I guess you don't miss it as much as you say.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I do, I’ll start buying albums again. I just didn’t notice I was missing it until I really thought about. Just one of those weird things that got away from me and I didn’t notice.
Louisiana_sitar_club@reddit
“I wish I could still have a thing.”
You can. Just buy the thing.
“I don’t wanna.”
GarionOrb@reddit
Right? I swear this sub loves to make up things to "miss."
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I didn’t say I don’t want to. I just haven’t realized how much I missed it. Now I will start buying them again.
Maureengill6@reddit
I still buy CDs because I still have a 6cd player in my car and a 10 speaker bose system. I love CDs.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I still have all of mine, I just rarely listen to them.
mfhandy5319@reddit
I listen to them when I have to house to myself in the afternoon. At full volume. During lawn services.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’ll start doing that too!
Ok_Key_4731@reddit
I lost most of my CDs to a basement flood a few years ago. I actually downloaded most of them over several years and they are still on an external hard drive.
ApplicationUpper9229@reddit
That’s on you. They never went anywhere.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I get that. I just didn’t really think about it. Having everything on my phone for cheap is easy. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I actually thought about it. I need to start buying them again.
Ok_Key_4731@reddit
I personally enjoy the instant access to music. 🎼
It’s low effort. Just about any song I want I can get. It’s amazing.
I do have fond memories of listening to the LPs with headphones and reading all the lyrics. Or recording my favorite song off the radio. But I’m kinda glad I don’t have to don that my mote I guess.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I like the access too, but I think for stuff I really like I’m going to start buying the albums.
InvestmentMain8414@reddit
Do it. My mid 20's kid has a whole set up for her vinyl and cd collection.
She keeps newer music on Spotify, but anything pre 2000's is a record or CD. She loves owning the physical copy of stuff.
Out-Of-The-Forest@reddit
I miss LP's!. I miss the artwork and studying the artwork and the lyrics. I loved it when artists would take the time to really make the LP artwork and inside materials really nice. Lyrics, stories.. the whole lot..
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Me too! I’m going to start buying stuff again.
bowlgar@reddit
LPs are still a thing. It’s how I buy all of my music, and it’s just as great as the old days. Expensive but worth it.
SnooDogs4864@reddit
You know you can still buy this stuff on vinyl and get all that. Cost a lot more, but you can still do it.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I know, and I am. I wasn’t aware I was missing it until I actually thought about it. I’m going to back to buying albums now.
Elchimpy1@reddit
I so get this. Remember getting an album and finding there’s so deep cut that’s an absolute banger. I loved that.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Yes!! Nothing like hearing it for the first time!
GutterRider@reddit
I used to always play an entire LP from start to finish, before streaming and picking what you want to hear.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Same here. I’m going to start buying the albums again though. Now that I’m aware of it I’m going back to old school!
polkastripper@reddit
Get onto Bandcamp, you can download artist's albums there or buy their CDs/records. If I can't buy an album from Bandcamp, buy from artist's website, or download the digital album on Amazon, the artist won't get listens from me via streaming. I refuse to turn my love of music into playlist or singles form.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I will definitely check that out, thanks!
automator3000@reddit
Then like buy some albums?
This is such a weird rant. May as well be saying “I’ve been getting all my pizza from delivery! I miss pizza restaurants! Why don’t pizza restaurants exist” … when there’s a pizza restaurant in your neighborhood.
Way to whine about a problem of your own making that you could solve in a snap.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m going to start again, it’s just one of those things I wasn’t really aware I wasn’t doing anymore until I realized I missed it. It’s not a rant, just an observation of something I realized recently. Thanks for the support, though.
Full_Mission7183@reddit
I buy LPs to support the bands I listen to. You probably haven’t heard of the artists on my collection, but I was able to give some cash to an opening act, or the small venues when someone from the band comes running out after the show to sell their merch.
Support live and local music.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I do enjoy live music and always go for the merch in the smaller venues. I’m going to start going to the record shops again though!
Great-Tical-Returns@reddit
We started buying vinyls again a couple years ago. You can find them in a lot of places now, I got a Purple Rain picture disc at Barnes and Noble!
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
That’s awesome!
freerangeXkid@reddit
I recently unearthed my 200 CD Case Logic notebook that was with me through the 90s on many cross country road trips. Some of my favorite memories are of driving in the middle of nowhere with no connection to the world. Just the road and my albums and a vague idea of where I was heading
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
Same with me! I still have mine too!
liddybuckfan@reddit
I still have my vinyl and CD collections! You can get a lot of great albums at thrift shops or used record stores. New vinyl is so expensive these days. I only splurge for my very favorite artists.
My 19 and 21 year olds like physical media! They each have collections of vinyl, CDs and even cassettes.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
That’s a great idea!
lovegood123@reddit
Buy a turntable and hit some used record stores! It’s so much fun
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m definitely going to start doing that again!
MrMilesRides@reddit
I am desperately trying to rebuild my CD collection. Vinyl too (I still have a tidy collection) although my turntable is on its last legs.
It's just way better owning the thing.
kckitty71@reddit
Not going to lie, I have a rack of CDs in my living room. Yes, I am single.
Ok_Kick6546@reddit
My youngest son is 23 and has been buying remastered vinyl for years. Some of his favorite current artists release vinyl and he and his friends appreciate the better quality.
KurtStation68@reddit
Opening up the album and reading lyrics and linear notes. Sometimes there's surprise like a poster, stickers, or catalog.
I have CDs that still have those, but they're also equally smaller.
SbMSU@reddit
I still do full albums all the time. Just need to find the right music. Hint: it’s not on the radio.
MidwestAbe@reddit
You aren't listening to the right radio stations then
SbMSU@reddit
Only stations around me play country, classic rock, and hits. Wish we had good stations.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I don’t listen to the radio anymore lol another weird thing that used to be such a big part of how I spent my time.
bookon@reddit
I kiss actual songs.
TraductorPerdido@reddit
I miss albums as opposed to things like endless EPs and some artist or group's brand new song, sure. But physical, tangible media I definitely miss.

drivergrrl@reddit
Shit I still burn mix CD's for my car lol.
bluealien78@reddit
I’m a gigging singer/songwriter in my spare time, and my love for physical media is precisely why I offer my albums on CD and cassette (and, just for kicks, I did a run of MiniDiscs for my most recent recording). I collect vinyl and CD and cassettes and absolutely love having tactile media associated with music.
katcrayzay@reddit (OP)
I’m going to have to get back into it again. It’s just so easy to download that I haven’t thought about it in a long time.
