Who is your favorite automotive personality?

From Youtube for example. I have recently watched episodes of personalities such as ChrisFix and EddieX. I was impressed by their passion for cars and clean and informative presentation.
Who is your favorite automotive personality? I will take a look.
zmansp@reddit
Jason Cammisa is the best on YouTube. Otherwise the OG top gear trio ofc
Godvater@reddit
He is too much of a sucker for anything American or at least the Hagerty riders are.
zmansp@reddit
Not sure I agree there. He mostly owns Volkswagens, and usually likes to talk about old Mercedes on his podcast. He clearly just appreciates interesting stories and engineering. And if you’re referring to GM and Tesla, they have objectively had impressive engineering over the years, which is probably why you’ve interpreted it that way.
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
Thomas Holland and James Engelsman are real good too
SR70@reddit
Have followed Jason for a long time, ever since he did a video and article on his Scirocco (since I had one too) WAY back before he was with Hagerty (it was like 15 years ago I think). I think he is a VERY good Journalist and I love how he is so detailed about the little stuff and that he owns and maintains “real” cars that most of us can afford to own.
coffeeshopslut@reddit
I like cammisa and I know some people find him over the top and obnoxious, but I love it when he's balanced by Derek Tam-Scott
ICantDecideIt@reddit
DTS is such a good balance to cammisa
Random-name-number@reddit
Great chemistry
homegrow420@reddit
I feel DTS is so awkward. It’s hard for me to listen.
Random-name-number@reddit
Jason Cammisa, Chris Harris and Derek Tam-Scott. Only trio that could replace top gear trio.
homegrow420@reddit
I like Cammisa too but his podcast with Derek Tam-Scott is so awkward and they have NO flow together. When Cammisa was on “That car pod” with Demuro… it was night and day.
intertubeluber@reddit
I’m watching him for the first time. Great content but I find him annoying as fuck.
EliteEthos@reddit
Came here to say this.
Hagerty is the best, highest quality car channel on YT right now.
YalamMagic@reddit
Throttle House > Harris imo
zmansp@reddit
True
Ignorhymus@reddit
Chris Goffey, Tony Mason, and Tiff Needell?
Clarkson Hammond May and the stig were a reboot of the OG top gear from the 70s -90s. Though Clarkson did feature quite a lot, and may did a bit
BassWingerC-137@reddit
Camissa and then Throttle House.
Eharmz@reddit
Idk, I find Cammisa as a presenter to be annoying as hell. He should stick to writing. I really want to watch the Hagerty content but I just can't stand him.
zmansp@reddit
I can understand where you’re coming from. His humor can be a bit facile at times. But he’s just so knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and authentic that I don’t really care. That paired with the production value it’s hard to beat.
Jor6lez@reddit
Same here. I watch Hagerty only for Catchpole, I find Cammisa extremely boring.

Nobody will catch them since nowadays you're going to review washing machines, I mean EVs
henkie316@reddit
Washing machine joke goes brrrr. Come on man. It's overdone. You know EV's are great cars for everyday use. You just don't want to admit it
TheNorthernRose@reddit
Among the best chemistry of a group in the last few decades, in or out of car media. There’s good presenters, but very very few of them can not only make each other laugh about any topic, but make the audience laugh about any topic.

Harry Metcalfe
Rich guy with deep experience in the auto industry from both the journalism, and purchaser side. However he comes off as extremely down to earth, and relatable.
No clickbait, and just very pleasant experience watching his content.
Godvater@reddit
This is my answer too and I watch at least 1000 hours of Automotive content every year.
hiro111@reddit
Bar none the best automotive YouTuber. Also, his videos are often mini vacations.
mellofello808@reddit
I love to live vicariously through Harry. He does it right taking amazing cars, on amazing adventures.
Despite a lifetime of privilege, and getting to drive the best cars in the world you can still feel his enthusiasm come through. Because Youtube is more of a hobby for him he doesn't feel the need to do gimmicks, or constantly top himself for views.
Total class act. His videos are such a relief from all the other YT nonsense.

Doug Demuro purely because he wears 2 T shirts at the same time and his subliminal autism meshes with mine. Plus I enjoy learning about odd QUIRKS AND FEATURES, so knowing about oddities with wiper switches in multi million dollar supercars is fun
avoidhugeships@reddit
I want to like him because he does some cool cars but I can't get past the screaming.
Aforementionedlurker@reddit
His acting excited when accelerating would sweep the razzies, annually. Either sounds like he's about to nut, "Insane!", "Oh my God", or "Wh Wh Who Whoooo!". And the facial expressions as if he's Agent Smith being destroyed by Neo. It's just too much
Michelanvalo@reddit
I'm pretty sure that's just Doug. His friends have made comments about him being even more animated off camera than he is on camera.
cakes42@reddit
He was equally terrible when he used to write on jalopnik.
OwlMugMan@reddit
His shtick in the reviews got a little old for me but he is hilarious on his podcast. I honestly feel a little sorry for the other guys because he must be an exhausting guy to have around all day, even if he is super entertaining and seems to be a very kind and honest person.

onemanlan@reddit
It’s a car review mixed with a creative writing class and an acid trip. It goes to some strange places, but dang are they not funny
Dr_WHOOO@reddit
Friggin love this one.
Especially when we get the random DEEP shit about art and history in connection with the car.
Super nice dudes too, been to a couple of their meets around Philly.
Proper-Editor4688@reddit
Brian Lohnes.
He used to work for Motortrend magazine, and has an enormous archive of automotive publications from over the years. He makes videos about automotive history, mostly centered around drag racing, and brings out all kinds of facts and figures you'd never be able to find on your own, because they're all only in 60 year old magazines. There's lots of cool and obscure stuff to learn about from him.
theathene@reddit
Pierre (Effin) Hedary hands down. That guy knows his trade. I'll never be able to send a car of mine to him...but if I could, he'd be the guy.
everythingsgonnabok@reddit
Derek Bieri from Vice Grip Garage. Best channel on youtube
A_Small_Coonhound@reddit
James. Of Thomas and James.
Wardog008@reddit
Jason Cammisa and JayEmm.
The former is really fun to watch, my favourites being the Revelations series he does.
The latter is UK based, and does shorter reviews on a huge variety of cars. Despite owning several Ferraris, his passion for more basic, every day cars is something I really enjoy, and shows that he appreciates cars from every budget and market segment.
Clareth_GIF@reddit
JeyEmm has immaculate taste in shirts.
zetecvan@reddit
I met JayEmm a few weeks ago at the Rustival car show. He was interested in my mates TVR. We had a brief chat and seemed like a decent guy.

Jay Leno.
Clareth_GIF@reddit
I frigging love that old dude!
Prior-Chocolate3257@reddit
A bit biased being English myself and prefering English content creators, but in general I have to say the AutoAlex lot, the chemistry and jokes that they have between them makes for great watching. A lot of their content is relatively relatable too, theres mistakes, botches but actual information and how to too.
I did however start off watching Devin Niemela, if you're more into JDM style cars, Nissan, Subarus, Mitsubishis etc he's definitely you're guy. Hes funny, down to earth and he knows his stuff. Good banter with his wife who is also into cars and lots of alternative builds, fixes etc for the same car. That and hes had a massive come up, starting from the bottom and up. The only thing that stopped me watching was that it got a but same-y. He did a couple of the same subies, couple evo 8s, couple 10s but he seems to have branched out so will be catching up.
Hes especially good if you want to watch a whole build cut down to a 20 minute vid.
Training-Expert5598@reddit
Lizzie Hammond. She's adorable and surprisingly very good at reviewing cars with her own style. She's not her dad, but she's perfected the way she presents segments.

mediaocrity24@reddit
Absolutely. I wish he'd upload more
ctskifreak@reddit
Agreed - I appreciate the longer form videos, but I wouldn't mind him milking some of the stuff and spreading it out over a few videos. The fact that Datsun modernization video was ONE video is kind of mind blowing. But, it does fit his editing style.
ncerator@reddit

Death_to_Stupidity@reddit
I watched his videos and one day realized I recognized a water tower in the background. This dude lives down the road from me.
Antonymousss@reddit
The guys from Mighty Car Mods. One of the first YT car channels I watched back in the wee days of YT. They definitely helped propel my interest in heavy modding, forced induction and more.
spooksmagee@reddit
Reviews: Savagegeese, The Topher, Topher Drives.
Reviews/car related chat: Matt Farah & The Smoking Tire.
General car news: Doug Demuro's weekly podcast.
WATTHEBALL@reddit
The Topher is the Ned Flanders of YT car reviews.
I stopped watching him after he praises almost every single slapped on ipad/widescreen dash/infotainment du jour.
Even when he doesnt like it it's like he purposely struggles to say it in the nicest way possible. Rubs me the wrong way and seems fake.
He's a good reviewer though and is knowledgeable but I dunno lately I had to step away for the reasons above. Maybe im being too harsh lol.
strongmanass@reddit
I think you have to understand the position indepedent Youtubers are in. All these people are enthusiasts who were in the right place at the right time to break into the professional car world as outsiders. They depend on continued access to new cars to earn a living, but they're also enthusiasts with strong opinions on what they like.
The best way to satisfy both of those truths is to be diplomatic with their criticism. That doesn't make them dishonest, just sensible. Some Cartubers are more risk-averse than others. Those require a bit more work from you as a viewer because you have to read between the lines. But you just have to learn their language. Henry Catchpole never comes across critical, but if you watch him enough you can tell how he talks about a car he doesn't like.
Camburglar13@reddit
Yeah that’s the frustration. If they’re totally honest and keep bashing a company, they’ll soon run out of cars to review. But the whole point is to get honest reviews
MumpsyDaisy@reddit
For what it's worth I think they're very very good reviewers regardless of what they say out loud because giving POV tours and drives of cars is very useful for letting you form your own opinion. Even a fairly thorough channel like Savagegeese doesn't quite give you the same impression of a car's interior or typical driving experience as having the first person view of somebody climbing in the backseat or driving it.
narcistic_asshole@reddit
I think there are more discerning reviewers out there, but I've definitely seen the topher dish out a fair amount of criticism. His semi-recent Lincoln navigator review was probably one of the most scathing car reviews I've seen from anyone in awhile
MaraudingWalrus@reddit

SR70@reddit
I follow a few different ones and I think Jason Camisa and the Carmudgeon Show and the other Hagerty backed shows he does (revelations etc) are really good. Throttle house is my favorite hands down. When it comes to a lot of those personalities take them with a grain of salt. A couple of “car YouTubers” brought their cars into my shop to fix them. Car Reviews: Throttle house, but this is few and far between unless its a car I am fascinated by.
General car content: Mat Anderson
New and Local up and coming: Toms Refurb. What I enjoy about him is that even when he passed 1mil subscribers, its still the same kind of content, the same off the wall "get it it done" kind of videos. He didnt change any of the format, no intros, just same video type that hes always made. And hes local to me so I enjoy seeing areas I know.
Drifting / Car building: Jimmy Oakes and Nappy Boy Automotive (TPain).
I still watch Cleetus, Adam LZ, sometimes TJ Hunt, and a few others but their contents getting stale. When youve been around for 10+ years on youtube its hard to continue to be fresh. I do enjoy what I call "cross over episodes", seeing youtubes show up on other youtubers channels.
I actually enjoy shop renovation videos more than anything. IDK why, maybe its for ideas of how to build out my garage.

In no particular order:
WretchedMisteak@reddit
codenameoxide@reddit
Sarahntuned, Misha Charoudin
RousingRabble@reddit
I like Sarah, though there are some times when her scoring system is a little weird. There will be times when she will give scores without really explaining them or the scores don't seem to match the video itself. Just today she gave an extreme negative score in her Polestar review on "disposability" and unless I missed it, never explained why. And it was an overall positive review.
Her comment section also gets a little weird sometimes, but idk how much of that is on her and how much is just being a woman on the internet. People get weird. At least it's positive tho. Most corners of the internet dealing with cars are overly negative.
codenameoxide@reddit
True. My take away is usually that she reviews the undercarriage and can also give a sense of what it is to drive daily. You're right though, her rating system only makes sense to her lol.
Workplaceacc5553@reddit
Of course there is only one right answer and it´s the original Top Gear trio. Nothing will ever beat those guys. But when it comes to people who are still actively and regularly producing car content my favorites are:
Doug DeMuro
Hagerty (insanely good production)
British and German Carwow Youtube channels
Throttle House (The Hosts are great and will be hosting Top Gear in the near future)
Matt Armstrong can be interesting, especially his current Bugatti adventure
Used to love Donut Media but they have gone very much downhill since they got new owners/management
JP Performance is also great if you understand German or are ok with reading subtitles
Fun-Gas3117@reddit

Jay has the Hall of Giants, turn of the century cars that achieved big horsepower through ludicrous displacement. Instead, I'd have a hall of midgets. All the quirky attempts at making a successful microcar.

Honestly I thought clarkson was going to die a little over a week ago for a heart related surgery. Happy to know he's doing well now.

NoNonsenseKnowHow.
Guy is a former master technician and seems like someone I could hang out with. He's not adding as much content lately since having a kid but his videos are great. Mostly "will it start/drive" videos. Guy really knows his shit
lordtema@reddit
Chris Harris is probably THE favourite, but i also like Doug DeMuro, Henry Catchpole, Matt Farah.
BossDonBigga@reddit
Monkey Chris Harris is the only one I still watch that hasn't shown me any reason to not like him and he has ace production on his vids.
lordtema@reddit
If you haven`t seen it, do yourself a favour and watch the two parter interview Jonny Smith, formerly Fifth Gear and now The Late Brake show did with him just as he had taken the Top Gear job. Wonderful wonderful guy!

Tim Shmee150. Super knowledgeable and we have very similar tastes in cars so he features stuff I like

Now that Roadkill is no more and he's focusing on Youtube, Freiberger is top of my list. 2nd place goes to Watch Wes Work although I don't think he counts as an "automotive personality".

I've been enjoying Junkyard Digs alot recently. Just getting cars back on the road instead of letting them rot away is nice.
swfs0@reddit
Junkyard Digs ... I've learned SO MUCH about carburetors, drum brakes and brake line air purging from his repair work on old jalopies 😂
zmansp@reddit
Also niche pick: hunterdirection
sea_foam_blues@reddit
My numero uno. What a channel.
xdr01@reddit
Was going to post this, fantastic videos.
Breath of fresh air in the car video space. Love how he's able to articulate the inner battles of being an automotive enthusiast.

Cleetus, Superfastmatt, Noriyaro, Chris Harris on Cars, Grind Hard Plumbing Co (other content aswell)
turboevoluzione@reddit
Noriyaro for me as well, I've met him a couple times and he was really nice
aprtur@reddit
Superfastmatt's dry humor is hysterical, and I find it endlessly fun to dive into the comments for the conversations where engineers are clearly fucking around. Underrated channel, IMO.
aprtur@reddit
It's extremely hard for me to pick just one, but it would probably have to be Henry Catchpole in terms of length of time I've been following his work, as well as his consistency and genuine approach. I've been reading his columns since he was on early days with EVO, and am so appreciative of his heartfelt passion for cars echoing my own.
I keep up with some of the mainstream stuff that's posted on this forum, but in terms of more niche stuff that may not be listed here, I can list a few I watch:
-CarPrime with NOB Taniguchi and Max Orido. Self explanatory.
-Strut Channel with うな丼 (Unadon) - he reviews modern stuff, but also does walk arounds and drives on a lot of vintage Japanese cars, as well. Down to earth videos that are good to relax with.
-"Bakajon" JC Pepino from Work Wheels - we've talked a lot over the years, so I enjoy his videos when he feels like posting them
-Luke Huxham - killer filmmaker
mantenner@reddit
I'm honestly surprised there aren't move of Henry or the old Cwrfection crew like Alex Goy.
aprtur@reddit
Henry is, in my opinion, an old school car romantic - I guess I could see some people not being into that, but for me being someone whose first word was truck and endlessly emailed brand PR departments for brochures as a 10 year old (thank you Porsche Motorsport and BMW for all those glossy books), it just hits all the right buttons.

Autobahnjon - he's on Youtube, Tik Tok, and IG

I can understand where you’re coming from. His humor can be a bit facile at times. But he’s just so knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and authentic that I don’t really care. That paired with the production value it’s hard to beat.
