I have a 4080 GPU with a Ryzen 7 5800X CPU and 16 GB of RAM and I’m thinking about upgrading. My original thought was to upgrade the CPU, my motherboard, and get atleast 32 GB of DDR5 RAM because I know 16GB is a bit low for gaming. I realized when I started playing Marathon last month I’m only getting around 80-100 fps max when I’m playing. I really want to be getting atleast 120fps minimum on 4K. Is upgrading all three components the best course of action? Or do I just need more RAM? Or would it be more worth while to also upgrade the entire setup?
JohnyCrowley@reddit
Maybe upgrade to x3d chip but honestly i dont think its worth It to upgrade that build, specially on current prices...
Human-Suspect-232@reddit
Why? Is it not working? How much productivity will increase with the upgrades(ROI)? The market is so good right now, you may up 50% in a year of you invest the right thing.
ReportEcstatic155@reddit
Honestly before you go dropping a bunch of money, have you checked what's actually bottlenecking you? Like monitor your CPU/GPU usage while playing because a 5800X with a 4080 shouldn't be that bad
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Not 100% sure how to do so. Any suggestions?
ZalgoTheOne@reddit
Open tank manager, go to performance, and see if the cpu or gpu is 100% usage
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Just looked right now it’s about even with the GPU AND CPU usage. They are both only around 35-40%
Geohfunk@reddit
Task Manager is terrible for this.
It's a 16 thread CPU. If core 0 is at 100% and the rest are at 10% then it will show low total CPU usage even though the CPU is effectively maxed out for the game.
GPU usage shows SM population. If the workload is light enough then the GPU will try to slow down while keeping many SM working. You could be at 99% usage but half clock speed and the GPU is not maxed.
You should be looking at individual CPU cores here. At 120fps there is a good chance that the main thread on a 5800x is getting close to 100% in many modern games.
ZalgoTheOne@reddit
While playing?
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Yes. Just started a game and they are both only running at around 40%. Memory is about 81%
Mogura56@reddit
Turn on the steam overlay and it’ll show CPU and GPU utilization. I haven’t used the feature but I believe it can also track RAM usage too
ZalgoTheOne@reddit
Hmm
Ram seems to be a bottleneck but make sure that ur frames aren't capped a vsync is off
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
I capped my frames at 120 because it would crash if I didn’t.
Pro4791@reddit
Task manager is horrible for checking system usage while in game.
ZalgoTheOne@reddit
I know but its accurate enough to see if the gpu is the issue
RedLimes@reddit
https://youtu.be/2DfGNPiNTuM
Basically, if GPU isn't maxed out and there isn't any other reason for it to be so, e.g. a frame limit, then you are most likely bottlenecked
BMWfiend@reddit
5800x is absolutely not bottlenecking.
Commercial_Fix6812@reddit
100% agree with Ecstatic at 4K you shouldn't really be getting a bottleneck at all. And Marathon recommended RAM is 16gb. I don't think getting more ram is going to do much at all. I feel best bet to hit 120fps on 4k would be to upgrade the GPU.
Octaive@reddit
Don't listen to people saying your CPU is fine. A 5800X is a huge bottleneck in any online multiplayer game made recently.
deepfriedtomato1@reddit
Hes playing at 4k it shouldnt matter
Octaive@reddit
There's no mention of DLSS. And for multiplayer games that aren't super demanding, it still matters.
I have no idea what I have to explain something so basic. It's like most of you are using rudimentary heuristics for advice.
4k = CPU doesn't matter.
Unfortunately life isn't so simple. It depends on the game, on the settings, on the GPU. They're using a 4080 in a multiplayer game. This isn't a super demanding single player title.
dragenn@reddit
I upgraded from a 5900x/4080 super to 9900x AM5. Probably a solid 10% improvement at best. Mostly the same performance but costed an extra $1000cad and l bought everything at the lowest possible price brand new via auction, second hand, or on sale at stores.
I could have just overclocked everything and called it a day.
Maybe upgrade your ram, dail it in timings and voltages and grab 5950x, 5800x3d/5700x3d when prices are ready to pounce.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Do you think it would be more worth a whole PC upgrade if it’s only 10%? And would upgrading to a 9800x3d not make much of a difference?
Octaive@reddit
It's way more than 10 percent, no idea what this person is talking about. There's plenty of benches that show a 5800X is very mediocre for online multiplayer. BF6 benchmarks show a 9800X3D performing twice as fast, literally double the frames.
deepfriedtomato1@reddit
At 4k or 1080p?
Octaive@reddit
Marathon is terribly CPU bottlenecked for most people. What if they're using DLSS and want more frames? The 5800X is not ideal.
khidraakresh@reddit
What's your psu ?
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
850W
khidraakresh@reddit
The CPU is really good, the gpu too, PSU is decent to give enough power. My bet is lack of ram, do you have it on one stick or two ?
Expert_Conflict6374@reddit
CPU is bottlenecking you for sure
I had 5800X everyone says it's a great CPU (back in 2021) but it just isn't. It runs hot and has a lot of stutters. I went to 5800X3D and everything was fixed, GPU utilisation 99% all the time.
CPU cache is half of the equation but DDR5 RAM also boosts CPU performance. I would just sell that hot garbage while it's still worth some money (you won't believe how many people here think it's a good CPU because they couldn't afford X3D) and get something better. Even mid tier Intel will smoke that 5800X
SockClapOS@reddit
Just need to keep it cool. I have a 5800x paired with a 4080 Super and a Liquid freezer III and I have no issues keeping the GPU at 100% in 4k. Not to say I won't upgrade to a 5800x3d when i can, but calling it trash is deceiving.
Expert_Conflict6374@reddit
4K lmao you see where the flaw in your argument is?
The fact you need a 360 AIO for a low performance CPU is nuff said about cooling requirements.
When people make blanket statements like this all I see is confirmation bias.
I'm not gonna discuss further since you will obviously be defensive about your purchase
SockClapOS@reddit
Cyberpunk, Warhammer 3, KCD2, Forza all 80-144 FPS at 4k.
Why would I need to defend my purchase of the best MOBO/CPU deal I could find during the peak of covid when I built my PC. The AIO was added for another deal later. Im not as emotional over PC parts as you seem to be.
Its not that deep brother.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
I can run any offline single player game perfectly fine in 4K 120. As soon as it comes to an FPS like Marathon it started bottlenecking. So most likely he’s not talking about a game like cod or something similar.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Fair enough. I built this PC in early 2023 and haven’t really used it much til this year. Would it make a bigger difference if I upgraded to a 7800X3D or even a 9800X3D? Not sure if my motherboard supports 5800x3d
Expert_Conflict6374@reddit
You won't believe how much cache matters
CACHE is everything in modern gaming
Look at the comments telling you 5800X is good enough, all these people never owned X3D CPUs and are just being sour grapes, it's giving me the same vibes are those people in Monitor forums claiming 4K OLED is not worth it over 1440p.
Expert_Conflict6374@reddit
I think what sucked was that Zen 3 was just before the breakthrough in gaming technology happened in 2022 with V-Cache and DDR5. It's actually closer in performance tier to 2015 Skylake than to 5800X3D (neck and neck with i9 9900K which is Skylake technology)
So even if standard Zen 3 is only 2 generations old and your purchase isn't exactly ancient, the gap to the 9800X3D is actually pretty huge.
But Zen 3 is really cheap so a lot of broke budget buyers bought them and they get real defensive at online forums like this.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
lol I completely agree with the 1440p and 4K Oled argument. I went to 4K Oled two years ago and can never look back. It is literally a one quality difference over 1440p. Maybe I’m just picky but I always want the best out. It’s taking everything in me to not get a 5090 😂 but I’m gonna wait for the 60 series
Ryan32501@reddit
It would make a HUGE difference
Pro4791@reddit
Use MSI afterburner to check your CPU, GPU, and RAM usage while in game.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Checked on Afterburner and looks like the CPU is at 810 MHz and the gpu is at 5001 MHz
Peterowsky@reddit
Ineteresting... a 5800X should not be bottlenecking very hard with a 4080. Then again, it is 4k .
*Checks again... you said 80-100 fps and you want 120 minimum?
If money is no issue the obvious solution is to go for something like a 9800X3D with enough RAM and if that’s not enough look for a GPU upgrade.
Pro4791@reddit
Utilization, not clock speed.
SatisfactionKlutzy18@reddit
Another thought is that the 5800x3D 10th anniversary edition has been leaked to be a thing at 310$ usd. I think perhaps a better move may be to nab one of those when they release and upgrade to 32gb of ddr4.
That’s what I would honestly do
MrWendal@reddit
why spend $500 for only a 5-20% improvement? OP should just enjoy what they have for now.
Improvement depends upon title and at 4k like OP plays at the improvement is lower.
Mutt45@reddit
Any guesses as to win AMD will release the 10th anniv. edition of the 5800x3d? My son currently has a 5600x and think the upgrade to the x3d chip could sustain his system another 3-5 years (paired with 32 gb ram & rtx 5070).
SatisfactionKlutzy18@reddit
It should be sometime soon from my understanding, like within the next few months if I had to guess but I don’t know exact times. I have though seen that shipment manifest for this cpu have already been made and if that’s true they are already in warehouses.
So I would hold tight for a couple more months. I would also dig into what the latest tech leakers have to say about this on YouTube. I just have not done a deep dig myself because I am on AM5 and do not have a vested interest in this component if that makes sense.
Hopefully hat helps my friends 👍
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
That’s not a bad idea. Just was thinking of upgrading to make my PC more future proof because I’ll probably upgrade again when the 60 series comes out. Money not a big problem right now.
Tree_Dude@reddit
Honestly I’d wait for the 5800x3d to be released again and drop one in and call it there until RAM prices stop being insane.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Do you think RAM is part of my issue?
Tree_Dude@reddit
No low system ram doesn’t cause Low fps, it causes stuttering and pop in. Very few games will top out 16gb and Marathon isn’t one of them.
CpuPusher@reddit
Your wanting to get at least 120 fps on 4k, is that a gaming monitor or TV.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
Monitor. 27inc rog swift
CpuPusher@reddit
Have you set the 4080 settings to Max in the game settings, I would try that. The 4080 is a capable card at 4k.
Dienowwww@reddit
Ram first. Cpu next.
9okm@reddit
Are you CPU or GPU limited at the settings you want to play at?
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
All my settings are on high right now. Lowered a couple to low and medium like the shadow textures and stuff.
9okm@reddit
So, if you keep lowering settings, does your FPS go up? If yes, then that means your CPU still has more to give, and the main limitation is your GPU.
One_Cartoonist_1999@reddit (OP)
No when I lowered my settings there has been no change. I’ve tried to even lower all the way to 1080 and it hasn’t gone above like 90 in game
9okm@reddit
Interesting.
Looking at the system requirements... they're quite modest (I don't play marathon). https://help.marathonthegame.com/hc/en-us/articles/39001521437332-Marathon-Storage-and-System-Requirements
Your specs are way beyond the "recommended".
I'd ask around in a marathon sub and see what people say. r/Marathon/
