What are the stark differences working in the public sector?

I've never worked in public sector and I think I never will. I have the assumption that most are there for the super slow pace, the pension, or can't be sacked due to weak management. Am I wrong?
Especially interested to hear from those that have worked in both public and private. What are the misconceptions, and what are the anecdotes that live up to stereotypes of working at a Council, or civic department?
