It happened again!

I asked the cabin crew again if I could visit the flight deck after my flight home landed (my first flight on an A320neo) and they were more than happy to oblige!
They weren't rushing their turnover, so the first officer was happy to welcome me in, let me sit, and we talked planes for a while. I explained that I was still new to aviation, but I find everything about it *very cool*. Unfortunately, I just kept repeating "ugh, this is so cool" over and over in my excitement. He asked me what my favourite plane is, and of course I had to say the Super Guppy.
He reached up to turn on the cockpit annunciator and I went "Oh, the christmas lights!" and he went "Ah. You already know that trick, then." He sounded pretty disappointed at that š he said that there's not much else that he could show me while the plane was on the ground, to which I said "I mean you could make the plane go pull up, pull up, I guess?" and he said "yeeeeahhh I probably don't want it to make that sound though š¬"
At this point, the captain walked in and I apologised for stealing his seat. He said that it was fine, and joked that I could fly them home while he takes the night off in Inverness.
The first officer threw away the printed communications and then I went "Actually... Is it okay if I keep that, please?" and he passed it over to me! I have no idea how to read it, but it's cool to have.
I won't be flying again until October and it'll probably be an A319/A320 again, but I'm looking forward to it! Sorry for yapping so much about it too, haha. Just a bit excited about getting to sit in a flight deck.
isthattheword@reddit
You look very happy to be sat there haha!
The printout is weather information, called METARs. The line that starts EGPE means:
The rest of the lines are for other, alternative airports - Manchester (EGCC), Edinburgh (EGPH) and Newcastle (EGNT)!
Duchenbagen@reddit
The only thing that you left out was on the new castle line CAVOK Ceil And Visibility OK.
I meant to do this breakdown for the OP. I got busy preparing dinner for the family. Nice one mate.
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
Thank you, this is very helpful! The printout will be for sure going on my little corkboard at work.
Here's a view of the broken clouds from inside the cabin :)
mrfluffleballz@reddit
Make a copy of it soon, this is thermal paper and the text will fade within a few days or weeks. Better to make a copy onto normal paper to store it for longer periods :)
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
You should download flightradar24 and be one of us
Metalwell@reddit
FR24 is addictive by the way. I always check the skies for a while before I sleep. It is my own doom scrolling.
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
Downtown San Diego is my biggest weakness because aircraft directly fly over it
gefahr@reddit
If you're in SD, I have a restaurant recommendation for you that will make your day.
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
Yes I have been to liberty station
gefahr@reddit
Mr. A's. you'll need a reservation to to sit outside on the railing facing downtown.
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
Definitely recommend looking at Arizona, that's my key place to catch rarer planes on skycards!
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
I went to Pima in Tucson Arizona and saw the first 777 ever made, 10/10 would do it again
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
I have FR, and Skycards! Unfortunately they turned off the transponder before I could catch my own plane
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
The registration is G-UZHR, and itās flying right now
Kent_Doggy_Geezer@reddit
The Z after the time in the first bit is Z for Zulu, which is the nato phonetic alphabet and means that it is Greenwich mean time. In America they use UTC for universal time something.
Status_Accident_2819@reddit
Just to finesse... 9999 means "greater than 10km" - this doesn't mean there is no limit.
Ho11owm4n@reddit
Isn't it 9999 meters instead of ft? 10k ft wouldn't even be 2SM.
Unrestricted visibility is greater than 6 statute miles or greater than 10km.
ZuAusHierDa@reddit
Why is visibility in meters?
tefster@reddit
Its the ICAO standard. Generally meters for horizontal measurements, feet for vertical
isthattheword@reddit
Looks like, yeah, actually. Memory failed me. Corrected :)
anynamesleft@reddit
Came here to find the guy who could read airport. Reddit is so good so.etimes.
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
METAR is very fun
Puzzled-Formal-7957@reddit
Very cool - always nice to get to spend some time on the deck of your own flight.
Dont-Snk93@reddit
You should consider the cockpit as your future office.
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
Funnily enough, while I was on the train to the airport, I ended up talking with a Norse Atlantic pilot who was sat beside me.
After I asked him about flying the 787s, he asked if I was into aviation. I said I was. He said "Well, why don't you change your career to aviation, then?" and I struggled for a reason not to while he just smiled knowingly at me
1nolefan@reddit
I am not sure if they allow in US?
citizenwake@reddit
This is awesome OP!!!
Messyfingers@reddit
OPs avatar having the same hair color and style as her made me chuckle.
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
I spent longer than I'd like to admit on getting it to match
Messyfingers@reddit
Worth the effort.
janson_D@reddit
It is amazing. Donāt take this wrong. I want to tell you to be very cautious about posting anything related to commercial aviation. With some of these things the rules are very strict. You may not know the implications of any seemingly harmless pictures.
Wonderful_Virus_6562@reddit
Youāre too cute
Falkun_X@reddit
I hope the weather radar is off.... otherwise those walking in front are about to be sterilised for free, airline industry hates free!
TwizzyGobbler@reddit
do explain
Callero_S@reddit
Radar works by bouncing radiation off stuff, you donāt want to be that stuff
haarschmuck@reddit
Radar is non-ionizing microwaves. It also uses short pulses of high energy which to humans is not hazardous as the main risk of high RF exposure is localized heating of tissue which is more of a concern for constant emission dishes.
Callero_S@reddit
Not disagreeing. More like a focused and pulsed microwave oven that ionizing radiation. I never claimed it was ionizing though.
ArsErratia@reddit
After all, a human person is essentially just a very small raincloud.
thesuperunknown@reddit
When you see coloured areas on the ND (the navigation display, i.e. the one on the right in front of the captainās seat in this photo), it means either the weather radar is turned on, or the terrain display feature is on.
If the weather radar is on while the plane is parked thatās very bad, because it means the weather radar antenna in the nose is emitting high-power RF energy. In effect, itās microwaving everything in front of the plane. Microwaving humans is generally frowned upon.
Thankfully, in this case itās the terrain display. You can tell because the TERR ON ND pushbutton just to the right of the ND is active (green light).
gefahr@reddit
On the other hand, if you target it, you can charge thousands of dollars per zap.
TwizzyGobbler@reddit
looking back, it feels like it was kinda obvious that the wx radar uses RF energy lol. I just thought it had some sort of sensor. Thanks for your explanation!
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
Fortunately it was just the terrain display
Falkun_X@reddit
Normally inhibited on ground anyway unless you start the engines:)
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
Or you push the terrain on ND button
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
Tell me which one that is for the next time I'm on the flight deck. Just... For curiosity's sake...
Ahem.
/j
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
Alright sure
bigtzadikenergy@reddit
Never realised you could still do this albeit on the ground, used to go up to the flight deck a lot at cruise in pre 9/11 days as a kid. Will ask sometime!
soniczi@reddit
At cruise must be amazing experience! On the ground it's perfectly okay still though!
Melonpan78@reddit
OMG I'm insanely jealous! I'm a female avgeek too and I'd love to do this, but I just don't have the nerve, and wouldn't know if the aircraft had a short turnaround, or if the pilots had time to indulge me. I'm in awe of you just asking. Massive respect gurl! šš¼
soniczi@reddit
I'm also a female avgeek and as a child or young teenager I downloaded an app called Airlines Painter on my tablet and just drew the plane I was flying on to show it to the crew after landing. They let me in a couple of times, including on a 737-400 once (I have a picture of it and that thing looks ancient now!) Haven't flown for a couple of years, but girl, I can't even picture myself just walking up to the pilots and asking now as an adult haha, like you said I don't want to interfere. Hope I (and you!) can find some courage to just ask next time out.
SilverMarmotAviator@reddit
Please please please ask us up front! Most of us are big airplane nerds too and are more than happy to accommodate these kinds of requests when we have time. Always happy to share!
Melonpan78@reddit
Really? You don't mind grown adults totally fan-girling over you and asking probably very stupid questions?(I'm referring to me, not the OP, here! š)
Flagrant_negligence@reddit
Weāve spent our entire lives training and working to get into the cockpit. Itās very rewarding to share it with someone else that finds it interesting and appreciates airplanes. Always come up and ask us itās a perk of the job!
Facu474@reddit
Really? Every time I have asked they tell me they can't due to security reasons :(
_Makaveli_@reddit
Ask after the flight
SilverMarmotAviator@reddit
No stupid questions!
portugueseninja@reddit
Really?! I have always wanted to do this but have been too afraid to ask. When is the best time to ask, at the start of the flight or when deplaning?
SilverMarmotAviator@reddit
Start of the flight we should be there. End of the flight thereās a large chance we have to get to the overnight or go to our next connecting flight. Either way, please ask and we will do our best to accommodate you!
theLightSlide@reddit
When Iām nervous about asking something, I figure out how to make it easier for the other person. So maybe āIf you have time, would it be possibleā¦?ā And then they can tell you know itās possibly a no and they wonāt feel put on the spot. Always makes me feel better to know Iām making clear I understand their situation.Ā
HawkeyeFLA@reddit
As the other comment said ... Please please, just ask. You can also ask the cabin crew up front and they can ask the pilots.
Melonpan78@reddit
Thank you, and huge love for what you do! šš»
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
Yep, I asked the cabin crew at the end of the flight, and one of them went through to the flight deck, where I heard the first officer go "Why didn't you tell me sooner?! Of course!"
pasi_dragon@reddit
Not a pilot but I can only encourage you to just ask! My success quota is nearly 100%. As long as youāre flying an EU or US carrier, itās usually no problem at all!
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
I made sure with the flight crew both times by asking if they had a quick turnaround! I told them if they did, I didn't have to go up :)
Melonpan78@reddit
You are my heroine today.
Sanchez_Rosie712@reddit
I'm kind of jealous of you. I've always dreamed of sitting in a cockpit. It would be so cool to see it in real life, get a feel for the controls, and figure out all those futuristic displays and switches. Airbus really nails it

Iām from the USA and I used to do this as a kid in the ā90s; I have a feeling this is not remotely allowed in America in the post-9/11 days, but Iām wondering if anyone knows with certaintyā¦
When I was really young, I even got a tour of the control tower at the local regional airport where my dad worked⦠now THAT isnāt ever going to happen anymore! š
je386@reddit
When I was a kid, I was asked if I wanted to visit the flight deck... in flight.
It was great.
Roy4Pris@reddit
As a kid I got to visit the cockpit during a flight. So long ago I can't remember if it was a DC-10 or a 747.
nobody65535@reddit
Call the tower (landline) and ask. Smaller airports do this all the time (or may have a set day)
HawkeyeFLA@reddit
On the ground, time permitting...the majority of flight crew will happily oblige requests to visit the flight deck. Basically just ask the cabin crew greeting you as you board. They'll either already know if the pilots are too busy, or they'll ask for you.
Fly3rBoi@reddit
As a 55yo private pilot I ask in every airplane I fly in.
I have NEVER been told no and the guys and gals are so accommodating. Always ask at the end of the flight!
JConRed@reddit
Aww that's so cool!
I wonder if my mate is still a pilot at easyjet. Is should try and catch up with him.
FuzzyToaster@reddit
Can someone explain the christmas thing?
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
It's a test that you can run in the cockpit to ensure everything lights up as normal and there's no burnt out bulbs. It's called the Christmas lights because everything lights up in red/orange/green, like christmas lights
Chicago_Blackhawks@reddit
so so cool

EasyJet pilots are soo welcoming! I was lucky enough to sit in the cockpit too, upon arriving in Paris
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
I was too scared to touch anything in case it somehow made the plane explode (because all planes have that button, of course), props to you for holding onto the sidestick š
Afraid-Feedback-1103@reddit
Haha, I was also too scared to touch anything at first, but the pilots actually insisted on me grabbing the sidestick and even let me move it around :)
Dear-Regret-9476@reddit
Whatās up with the top ECAM display looking gray, but the bottom one looks black
HawkeyeFLA@reddit
Probably just a trick of the lighting, camera angle and such
Lazy-Training5303@reddit
Might be the lighting? The ND to the left looks slightly gray as well so its probably the seemingly bright sun outside causing issues
Sacharon123@reddit
Good rest in Inverness! We are always happy for visits, even the Easyjet colleagues ;)
haarschmuck@reddit
Bring back cockpit tours!
As a kid my mom always booked me the window seat just in front of the wings because I loved looking at the engines.

Easyjet crews are really welcoming from my experience, as long as theyāre not running behind schedule, EZY flightdeck crews have always been more than happy to oblige when Iāve asked to pop my head into the cockpit after landing.
IEnjoyRandomThoughts@reddit
I always fly with EasyJet when in Europe. I find their service pretty at par with Canadian airlines for a fraction of the cost. Their staff are generally very nice.
Flew a 321 from Naples to Palermo the last time. Quick up and down and a gorgeous landing into Sicily.
Thanks for sharing the pics!
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit (OP)
Easyjet's the only one I've flown with, simply due to the cost. The only other airlines that fly from Inverness to London are KLM and BA which is expeeeensive.
I really don't see the point in paying extra when it's just a short haul hour flight. If it was an international trip (say, to America or Australia) then I could see why you might want to splash out a little, just for comfort's sake. But I'm taking the equivalent of a bus ride to my destination here, so I don't really care š maybe I'm just cheap
GITS75@reddit
OP your smile brights the sky š
Katana_DV20@reddit
What a fun post! Great pics too. What a great crew to let you chill like that!
Total contrast to Emirates. While boarding I was behind a mom and her small son. He looked at the FA and said "Could I see the cockpit after landing?" He just stared at him and blurts. "NO, THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE"
The mom gave him a quick glare. There is a way to say things even if its a "no". The boy looked crushed.
BTW I just noticed the your glasses frame! You are hearting the Airbus...

Gumbode345@reddit
What a fun read! Keep doing this, itās really fun.
bjornvil@reddit
I like getting visits into the flight deck. Iām happy you enjoyed it. Yeah the Christmas tree is a classic.
One thing about the Airbus Fly by Wire aircraft is that the side stick and thrust levers arenāt actually connected to any cables to the flight controls or engines so you can actually move the side stick and thrust levers and feel how they actually feel in flight without it doing anything. I wouldnāt recommend doing it though without asking the flight crew first :)
Tomcat848484@reddit
Next time ask them to do an engine and apu fire test since you are already familiar with the Christmas tree.
The_Drakin_@reddit
Heck yeah, my local airport! I've never been into the flight deck of an active aircraft before (been in plenty in museums), but I'm on holiday right now and I'm debating whether to do this when I get back to Inverness next week.
