Curious if anyone watched The Boroughs on Netflix?

I don't watch much TV these days, but I decided to load up Netflix and see what looked good. I landed on this show, mainly because the topic was around a 60+ retirement community out in the desert. Considering the age of many of us, this is something that is on a lot of minds. I really loved the first two episodes, seeing someone adjust to the community, come out of his shell, make new friends and feel like he belonged for the first time in a long time. The show is labeled as 'sci-fi' and there is a ton of sci-fi stuff in the show. I can't be the only one who felt kinda disappointed by this...I really just wanted them to focus on the community and focus on the drama and life of living in a 60+ retirement community! I can't think of any show that covers that type of content and it feels like they missed a big opportunity to educate the world about life after 60 and how joyful it can be...plus I am really curious about living in a place like this in the future and wanted to learn more about it (even though it's just a TV show and I realize its only semi-realistic). Anyone else have similar thoughts?

I watched the whole thing, and loved it. It felt more boomer-coded than genx-coded to me. It reminded me a lot of that old Wilford Brimley movie, Cocoon.

Cocoon hit me by the second episode, it was very clear the direction things were going, quite early...still a fun show, even if I wanted something different. At first I was critical of similarities to Cocoon, then I realized that anyone under 40 has probably never even heard of that movie.

The Sci-fi is a metaphor. 😄 We enjoyed it, great cast, good music. It's really more boomer focussed than GenX - the actors are all in their 70's and there too many references to drug use and easy access to sex. If it was true GenX there'd be less golf and more D&D games 😉

Oh I totally understood that it was a metaphor for how the elderly are treated and the lack of capability we assign to them, that is pretty clear. I just wanted something else, that's all. If others loved it, that's totally cool too!

"Some Kind of Heaven" is a documentary about the largest 55+ community in Florida, The Villages. That may give you more real info. I think as you watch more of The Boroughs you might find that particular place less appealing. But it is a fun show. I think it's Sci-Fi lite.
