‼️ AI DATA CENTER FILM SCREENING!
On Sunday, May 31st, Revolutionary Front and DSA’s Collin County Branch will host a film screening and community forum about Plano’s data center takeover. We’ll watch three short documentaries highlighting the dangers of this phenomenon, and discuss how we can protect our communities from these energy-draining behemoths. If you’re already concerned by Big Tech’s war on the environment, or simply looking to learn more, we urge you to attend and participate! Background illustration by Glenn Harvey

Data Center: the new “apartments in Plano”— as in nimby.
Waste-Soil-4144@reddit
I don't want datacenters in my backyard, or your backyard, or my worst enemies backyard. I don't want them to exist in general.
sfa1500@reddit
You know you just said that on a website that has to utilize data centers to run its servers right?
Waste-Soil-4144@reddit
I didn't think i needed to specify "AI datacenters" but here we are. I do not want AI datacenters to exist.
AlphonseLoeher@reddit
AI datacenters are just datacenters with GPUs. There's barely any difference.
Waste-Soil-4144@reddit
Other datacenters at least justify their harm by being useful to the general public. AI datacenters don't serve the public in a meaningful way at this time.
AlphonseLoeher@reddit
GPUs are incredibly useful wtf are you on about? There are tons of workloads that use them that provide tons of value to the public.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
It is important to state what you are against because there is a big difference between the two. One keeps the internet and commerce afloat and more storage and data centers are constantly needed. The other is used to create things humans already have which does exactly nothing for humanity other than make us dumber the more we start to rely on it. There are use cases where an argument for Ai can be made, but the end result will always be humans taking a shortcut because why work if a computer can do it all for me?
Waste-Soil-4144@reddit
I felt that there was no need to specify because the datacenter that OP is referring to in this post is an AI datacenter. So i figured through context clues people would understand what i am talking about. Clearly i overestimated the intelligence of the people on this sub though.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
Don't assume context clues to work in the written text. People usually take it at face value. Best to just add Ai in front of it to keep from people getting confused. It doesn't help that OP doesn't make a distinction either in their headline or picture. And lets face it, a lot of folks don't read past the headlines.
sfa1500@reddit
How do you tell a regular data center from an AI data center? Especially in regards to the data centers already in Plano?
Waste-Soil-4144@reddit
By looking up the company that is building the datacenter and seeing that it very clearly says "AI datacenter" on the companies website.

I appreciate you actually being informed in your decisions.
yarmulke@reddit
bro did the meme
AlphonseLoeher@reddit
This is the worst meme ever. Nobody who uses it actually understands what it's trying to say.
sfa1500@reddit
Congrats on not arguing the point or rationalizing your position
yarmulke@reddit
Unserious arguments don’t warrant serious responses :)
sfa1500@reddit
Congrats on wasting another reply that will take up space on a data center somewhere.

You’re not a NIMBY for wanting to protect the environment from data centers.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
You’re not a NIMBY for wanting to keep low income housing from your backyard either. Why would you willingly allow trash to move into your neighborhood if you can help it?
HolaDrNick@reddit
What business is it of yours as to who gets to move where? If they're not moving in on the piece of property you (but lets be real, your bank) owns, you should probably just shut the fuck up about it.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
Why would you willingly allow trash to move into your neighborhood if you can help it?
Silvatungdevil@reddit
Because he is one of the shitbags who wants to move in and steal your shit. lol
TheDutchTexan@reddit
Ah, perfection...
yarmulke@reddit
DutchTexan blocked me so I can’t see his comments anymore but I can still tell you he’s just another ignorant NIMBY pos that likes to poorly cite statistics to argue against housing, public transportation, and other utilities that cities need to be part of a properly functioning metroplex.
yarmulke@reddit
Hiding your comment history doesn’t hide your recognizable username. Does it get tiring having bad opinions all the time or is it true that ignorance is bliss?
TheDutchTexan@reddit
The best thing about hiding my history is seeing people complain about it, which tells more about them than me. Get your stalker tendencies checked out. Major red flag.
Bonus round: Check the crime stats. Does it get tiring having bad opinions all the time or is it true that ignorance is bliss.
yarmulke@reddit
Bro really said “I know you are but what am I”
I guess you can’t expect more than elementary school level comebacks from someone who displays a reading comprehension skill below a sixth grade level.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
The fact you don't realize you just got called out on your own statement is exactly the reason why I am blocking you now.
flilmawinstone@reddit
I know my username is recognizable on this sub. I hide my profile because I have all social media locked down.
flilmawinstone@reddit
But if I don’t want an apartment backing up to my property or I don’t want more apartments which put a strain on social services, roads and water supply / infrastructure then I’m a terrible person ?
yarmulke@reddit
Yes, because housing is a need that everyone has.
Mynplus1throwaway@reddit
I don't want them anywhere. Not in Utah or El Paso or Amarillo or anywhere else.
We will finally have to get serious about nuclear energy (good), but not because we want to produce more efficient energy to replace what we use, but because we want more more more.
Some of these things are looking at a gigawatt or more in capacity.
Why? So we can be spied on by more flock + ring cameras, get even shitter Google searches, Facebook can give us AI friends, the apps can scan our photo galleries faster?
The surveillance state just gets worse by the day.
AlphonseLoeher@reddit
If you don't like data centers because you don't like automations taking jobs that's fin or because they are ugly or noisy. Just say so.
Trying to make some weird environmental argument is just dumb. If these datacenters didn't exist, it's not like companies are just going to not use some compute power somewhere. They just move it to on-prem. Is that better for the environment? Those on-prem racks aren't going to be cooled as efficiently as a datacenter. The staffing won't be as efficient, meaning more people driving to service these machines.
EqualIllustrious9633@reddit
Cheaper to move
TheDutchTexan@reddit
No, not really. For a couple of reasons:
