Upgrade 2070 Super to 5070?

Currently running a 2070 Super and looking for an upgrade. I game at 1440p and do some video editing.
My current system:
Ryzen 7 3700X
64GB DDR4-3600
PCIe 4.0 motherboard
RTX 2070 Super
I’m planning to build a completely new PC in 2–3 years, so I just need something that will perform well until then. I can get a dual-fan RTX 5070 at Micro Center for $579 (+ warranty), and it seems like one of the best value options under my $600 budget.
Is the jump from a 2070 Super to a 5070 worth it for my use case? Would the 3700X bottleneck it significantly at 1440p, or should I still see a worthwhile improvement? I’m hoping to get another 2–3 years out of this system before doing a full rebuild.

I upgraded from a 3060ti to 5070 and it was about 80% fps boost at 3440x1440p. A 2070S would be a similar jump I imagine. My CPU is a 5800xt. Your CPU will hold you back a little but would still see significant improvement

Wait until 2028. Or at least until new cards arrive.

I’m not sure my 2070s will last till 2028 lol

3700X already bottlenecks the 2070;super.
HankHippoppopalous@reddit
everything bottlenecks something, but the 5070 will be a ripper in this system go nuts fam.
In 2 years, you can just move the 5070 to your new rig anyways.

Thank you!

Play everything on max settings. 3700x is a big bottleneck if you want really high fps. I upgraded from 3700x to 5700x3d, fps went from 120 on MW3 to over 200, with a 7800XT for reference
Technical_Muffin_806@reddit (OP)
Wow, that’s a big jump. You are recommending I put it on Max when I get the new card? Does that help the CPU not work as hard?
Ryan32501@reddit
Technically. But in your case you will reach a CPU bottleneck playing on lower settings. For example with MW3 and my old 3700x, whether I had max settings at 1440p native or lowest settings with upscaling I was only getting 120fps. The 3700x was at 100% while my 7800xt was at 60%. The CPU simply couldn't push any more FPS even if I lowered every graphical setting. When I got the 5700x3d my GPU is always at 100% now, which is ideal. At max settings in MW3 i get 140 FPS but if I lower everything the 5700x3d can push well over 200 fps

Makes sense, thanks
Ryan32501@reddit
Technically you always want your GPU at 100% not your CPU, as this can cause stuttering and frame drops. When your CPU is maxed out it can't do background task effectively, like simple windows backend stuff will cause your games to stutter if there's no headroom left on your CPU
STRYED0R@reddit
It really depends on the games you play. I play arc raiders and cyberpunk and RE9 and the 3700X + 5070 does fine!
I'd much rather have a 5070 ti than upgrading to a 5700X3D (about 350-400eu second hand)
TokageLife@reddit
If you're not against going AMD consider the 9070 non-XT as well. You can grab an AsRock Challenger model for the same price and it is quite a bit more performant than the 5070.
Some bottlenecking is unavoidable since the processor is quite slow by modern standards but you will still get really good uplift upgrading.

Thanks for the input! I forgot to mention I have an ITX case so I need the two fan models :(
TokageLife@reddit
There are quite a few 2-fan models for the 9070 since it's a lot less power hungry than the XT which is juiced to hell to compete with the 5070ti.
blackops_kakashi@reddit
Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 is a two fan model, same for the ASUS Dual RX 9070

Very similar here, went from 2070 Super to 5070, playing mostly on a 1440p monitor with DLDSR 4K.
Will eventually upgrade the CPU but there isn't much bottlenecking no. You can get better 1% lows and a bit extra fps with an X3D card but I'm not in a hurry. I actually wish I had gone for a 5070 ti.
MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (Thermalright Assassin Spirit / Assassin X 120 PLUS V2)
GIGABYTE 5070 Windforce
2x16 DDR4 3600 MHZ CL16
corsair RM850e

Nice! Thanks for the info. I think I will look at better cards and cpu in a few years. I am just looking for a convenient upgrade without changing my CPU and motherboard, since mine is still the am4 socket.

When it comes to bottlenecking, I usually ask about resolution, games, graphic settings, ray tracing/path tracing, etc,. However, with 3700X + 5070 at 1440p, there is definitely going to be bottleneck, the only scenario where GPU could be fully utilized would be something extreme like native AA(no upscaling) with max path tracing, which it wouldn't be a playable fps(hence the reason CPU is actually not bottlenecking).
2070Super to 5070 is a massive jump in terms of performance, about 100-120% rasterized performance increase, but also with access to DLSS4.5, multi frame generation, ray reconstruction, etc,.
If you are planning on waiting to do a full build, for now you can upgrade your CPU to something like a 5700X or 5700X3D if you can find one at microcenter. With 5700X + 5070 at 1440p,

It's a good upgrade.. u won't regret it...
Notnowcmg@reddit
This sub is quite obsessed with bottlenecking but reality is unless you’re running a Pentium 2 with a 5090 then you’re probably never going to have to worry about it. Everything will have some kinda bottleneck but it’s almost always never even noticeable.
chalknation@reddit
I think since this is an interim upgrade and you have a slightly older cpu it would be better to get a 4060 or 4070 and save up for a 6080 or whatever the hot new thing is when you build your next system. We don’t know what the market will like at that point so the extra cash might go a long way if AI does its thing
Cristiano_ronaldo_71@reddit
The 3700X will bottleneck your 5070, but IMO you should get it, at 1440p, the bottleneck is not as big compared to an 1080p one, the higher he resolution, the less work the CPU has to do.

Yes, and yes.
Also yes.
