I mean. Devil's Advocate here. I don't disagree that the majority of people have no business driving those trucks. But.... Isn't that actually on the states who allow them to drive such a truck with no endorsements? And u haul is just taking advantage of the poor system?
Frankly... About 75% of people who have full size pickup trucks shouldn't be driving (or parking) those either... And don't even begin to get me started on RVs.... Trailers yes, but more so a giant bus sized motorhome? How do i need an endorsement to drive a bus but the same size motorhome is A-OK with no additional training?!
Technically yes, even the smaller ones are supposed to. When I moved cross country I just ignored them. I figured no one from Uhaul told me so if a cop stopped the truck I had plausible deniability that I didn't know.
But no one even looked at me lol. The cops have bigger trucks to worry about.
It should be required for uhaul to inform the drivers. Im a professional driver but i dont drive semis aka I dont have a CDL. Ive obviously never been in a weigh station and I honestly wont until uhaul actually does something. This is uhauls issues, not the driver (in this very specific instance).
You would think they would be way more stricter on them because 90% of them have no business behind the wheel of those trucks to begin with. They throw them in there with zero training or jack shit but don’t enforce nothing I mean make sense 😂
I have a cdl and have driven the big uhuals a few times. If you're even a remotely competent driver they aren't a big deal. Od bet what most people struggle with is actually understanding the box height
Yeah i was gonna say, I don't have my CDL but ive been a professional driver for many years (i.e driving a truck with a trailer with many different loads). Those uhauls aren't hard to drive... if you know how to drive. I drove a Ford E-350 for work and its the exact same. But I vehemently agree that these big ass trucks should require an endorsement. Hell, even the newer trucks being released should require an endorsement because these dumb fucking pavement princesses cant drive them for shit.
It's driving them having NEVER had a CDL. An auto parts company hired me at like 19 or 20 with just your basic D license and put me behind the wheel of a box truck.
I remember hitting the highway and white knuckling it for miles feeling the truck was too big for the lanes! Lol of course it goes away but bad drivers in general might take a long time to adjust, if at all.
RVs, box trucks, and any trailer really should require SOME training! Sadly most ppl learn by family members but who says those family members are properly trained? Regulate.
Drive f650 dump trucks at work. Not hard at all to drive. Usually “teach” new people how to drive them which consists of “it’s not actually much harder to drive these things than I thought” and just checking your mirrors
Always wondered about this at least in regard to weigh stations because occasionally the company I work for has to run MHC or Penske rentals if a trucks in the shop and we very much have to pull in &weigh in motion if signaled to do so, and obviously from there, you could be signaled to pull in for a level1-3 inspection so like what do they do in that even if it’s some Bob moving his shit?
We'll see the difference is, Bob isn't doing it for his company, so he's exempt from so many rules and regulations. You should see how overweight Bob has that U-Haul, and then realize Bob can have his wife Midge following behind him in their 45 foot Diesel Pusher tour bus sized RV, with air brakes, and also be exempt from many of the rules and regulations you must follow because you're doing it to make money.
I mean some of those operations are pretty small, having a truck break down is a real financial hit Im sure. It's in their best interests to make sure they're operationally sound.
Have you checked the tires if the truck was old? I've only rented moving trucks from Penske, but I've heard Uhaul always waits until the tires are barely on the edge of street legal to replace them.
I tailed someone driving the big U-haul, pulling a Terrain. We had sooo many close calls, I had to back away a few times. Called and checked on them too. It was loaded too. They’re not very stable either. The u-haul car trailer was swaying, especially going downhills. The uphills, 🙄🙄🙄 don’t get me started on that
I remember i was either 16 or 17, you know, barely over the driving age. My dad handed me the keys to that exact truck. That truck was rocking so much side to side. I could barely judge if I was actually in my lane. I was eating seat the whole way there.
I dont know if this was the case everywhere, but here in WI, they suspended road tests during covid and didn't restart them for over a year.
Now, in a sane world, you would assume they would just postpone the road test, issue provisional licenses, and then start working through the backlog of non-tested drivers once they resumed testing. But that's too logical, of course. Instead, they just licensed those drivers with nothing more than a certified licensed driver signing off on the form that those people actually could safely operate a motor vehicle and...that's it. "Well, if your Uncle Joe with 3 DUIs says you know how to drive, well, that's good enough for us!"
And now here we are. I dont know how many people got through on that little loophole, but I'd bet in Wisconsin it was in the thousands, probably tens of thousands, that have literally done nothing more than pass a written road test in an official sense, that are now out there on the roadways driving like complete and utter dogshit.
And that's on top of the tens of thousands of people that seemingly lost their "sea legs" due to not leaving their houses for a year and forgetting how to drive. 5 years later and they still fuckin struggle with such taxing situations as using their fucking blinker before they start deviating from a lane of travel.
I know I've long exceeded the word count of a comment on reddit to expect anyone to read it, but I dont care, this shit is so fucking maddening and it drives me fuckin batty being forced to operate around these fucking clowns day in and day out.

The last time I got a U-Haul I got the manual one specifically so my wife wouldn’t think she could drive it.
Square_Barracuda_69@reddit
Didn't even know they had a manual option. Definitely picking that next time
EnvironmentalGift257@reddit
No telling if they still do but my buddy got one 2 years ago.
Square_Barracuda_69@reddit
Fuck, that was the last time i used one of these big bitches.

do these pricks need to go through the weigh stations?

When I was 11 my dad picked up the whole family in western Colorado and moved us to Eastern Missouri.
We didn't hit any scale houses and drove straight through other than to feed and water the dogs, use the bathroom and eat.

Pure_Issue_3315@reddit
They absolutely do not force those moving trucks into weigh stations.
GiantEnemaCrab@reddit
Yeah they don't do shit, but in about 2/3rds of US states they are by law required to stop.

If I had to guess atleast 95% of uhaul drivers won't even acknowledge the scales let alone know when to pull in.

Facts
Pure_Issue_3315@reddit
No they don’t
Euphoric_Fisherman70@reddit
I had box truck driving experience before I ever rented a uhaul. When I got the uhaul, I drove like a complete jackass. Gotta live up to the name

People that can’t drive these box trucks, are the same people that can’t drive their sedans and suv. Your just a bad driver

Easy now! Uhaul isn't a danger ONLY because of the people driving them.
The trucks are also criminally neglected on maintenance too!

They run on gas ...weird

And the trucks just got BIGGER! How exciting!!
