How much does your body weight and size fluctuate throughout a typical year?

According to research, the average Brit consumes around 6000kcal on Christmas Day, in tandem with an entire month of decadence during December. The calories in restaurant and takeaway menus have been rising each decade, with much more consumption of eat out food than eve before.
But there is growing research to suggest modern Brits are becoming more health conscious particularly around celebrations, they are drinking less and there is a growing number of gyms and fitness establishments popping up.
So anecdotally how does this impact you? Does your weight fluctuate each year?
SubZerox27@reddit
I have weighed exactly the same since turning 18, I cannot lose weight, I cannot gain weight.
Organic_Reporter@reddit
And yet people go on about calories in, calories out like it's infallible science. If some people can't gain weight, it makes sense others can't lose it. Your body is clearly doing its own energy regulation and won't be swayed!
Ok-Rain6295@reddit
Most likely they’re just naturally adjusting their calorie intake to their activity levels.
r2d2rigo@reddit
It is science. You cannot defy the laws of thermodynamics.
mirembe987@reddit
I was the same from 16-30. Then had the copper coil and keep gaining weight, gained as soon as it went in but doctors won’t believe me it’s the cause
CriticalCentimeter@reddit
I was the same until I was in my 40s
Lilja-Logason@reddit
67-74kg.
I'm very strict with it as I've had to drop from obesity twice in my life and I don't wanna have to do it again.
inhindsite@reddit
Winter i put on a stone, sometimes more. By summer it's gone.
Think-Ladder7925@reddit
Always the same. I’ll be about 10kg heavier come Jan/feb, and get rid of it by the summer, slowly gaining it back through autumn/winter.
During which time I stay very strong.
danddersson@reddit
10kg! I was worried about 2-3kg gain over Christmas+New Year...
Think-Ladder7925@reddit
It’s probably a bit misleading. A week of healthy eating and diet and I’ve flushed out 2-3kg of water.
The number is probably nearer 7-8kg.
Feersum_endjjinn@reddit
I do this every year. Similar numbers. 10kg on throughout winter and then lost it again by May.
Flying_worms@reddit
I’m usually between 60 and 63kg.
Bus8082@reddit
Throughout the whole year? As in seasonally every year? Not at all.
But day to day SO much!! Over three days I went from 64.7kg to 67.4kg. I regularly fluctuate 1kg up or down from day to day.
peppermint_aero@reddit
That's incredibly normal and is mostly about fluid balance, how much food you have in your intestines, hormones etc.
Feersum_endjjinn@reddit
And liquid retention.
lavayuki@reddit
Ive been the same for years, usually fluctuate 1kg max but Im a gym and health freak, so I exercise and eat healthy everyday day. I still have clothes from a decade ago that still fit like usual.
fleapuppy@reddit
That’s what they meant by fluid balance
Feersum_endjjinn@reddit
Oh yeah 😂
lifetypo10@reddit
Yeah I was surprised recently when I started pushing to hit 2l water per day (in addition to the tea I usually drink) and my weight went up by over 2kg in 3 days, water retention is mental.
CriticalCentimeter@reddit
Big poo and little poo days
Organic_Reporter@reddit
I used to gain 7-10lbs every December. Which, if you don't lose it again, means gaining 5 stone in 10 years just from Christmas. I got to 17 and a half stone and thankfully Mounjaro happened, so I'll never have to go through that again!
VolcanicBear@reddit
I can fluctuate by 5kg over 2 or 3 days. For my weight and activity levels, that seems perfectly fine.
Annually? Almost nothing.
CoffeeandaTwix@reddit
Generally speaking, I tend to stay within a 5-6lbs window or so. I had some larger fluctuations because of mental illness (in both directions) and the associated drugs which can either supress or increase appetite to a fairly large degree.
Outside of that though, I just eat in the same way all the time and at 40, I still wear a few clothes that I bought 20 years ago.
Blueberry252@reddit
33f - it doesn't really. Just usual day to day fluctuations of about 1kg
pm_me_your_amphibian@reddit
Across the year not much really. I might put a kilo on over the Christmas holidays but that’s about it.
ChelseaMourning@reddit
I’m a woman turning 40 on Saturday. The only way my weight goes is upwards.
lizzie_knits@reddit
I’m losing weight so I’m not particularly fluctuating. I don’t overeat over Christmas, I never really have. Weight gain has been mainly inactivity after borking both my Achilles tendons, then developing plantar fasciitis and then I injured my knee. It’s been quite the few years hahaha.
I’m not a big eater so Christmas I’ll go a bit mad with roast potatoes but I do love sprouts and carrots and I always make sure I load up on them.
He_ofshadowsandtouch@reddit
Both Achilles sucks, one was bad enough.
I do over eat but get rid of excess weight rapidly with fasting and exercise
lizzie_knits@reddit
0/10 do not recommend. I’m slowly mending so fingers crossed I can get back to exercising properly again!
He_ofshadowsandtouch@reddit
How did you damage both ?
Mine was strained from running drunk down a mini pyramid in Spain in pitch black night. Then months later I went to sprint on a cold frosty morning without warning up.
I heard a loud pop a pain, I thought a farmer must have shot my leg ( rural here).
lizzie_knits@reddit
Ballet flat pumps. Walking around in them everywhere (I love walking).
Yours sounds much more exciting!
He_ofshadowsandtouch@reddit
I don’t know what they are but I hate thin flimsy shoes / trainers, protect those feet!
I’m a bit too adventurous sometimes and got a couple of injuries
Rn Im mixing pizza dough, hopefully risk free unless I choke on the mofo
lizzie_knits@reddit
They’re fully flat, no support anywhere. I had no idea they would do so much damage. My GP nearly hit me with them 😂
I’m very accident prone too. I once decided to take up running, took about three steps, slipped on a wet leaf and nearly broke my wrist.
danddersson@reddit
'Barefoot' shoes are great! I would hit my GP with them if he tried to take mine.
They take some getting used to, but strengthen calves and foot muscles. I regularly (but not exclusively) run 10Ks in mine.
lizzie_knits@reddit
They’re not barefoot shoes, they’re fully flat- like the ones Amy Winehouse used to wear. I can’t add a photo, but they’re definitely not the same thing!
He_ofshadowsandtouch@reddit
Accident prone myself
I did years of MMA and added to My day to day bruises
Emma16_4@reddit
I’m usually heavier in the winter and it often brings to mind wildlife fattening up for the cold…
thesteelmaker@reddit
I'm broken at the moment, so my weight has been stable all year (106kg).
When I wasn't broken, my weight would go: Jan 104kg, Feb 100kg, Mar 96kg, Apr-Oct 93/94kg, Nov 96/98kg, Dec 100/102 kg. 10kg difference during the warmer months.
Soniq268@reddit
I put on like 7lb every Xmas, make a half arsed attempt at loosing it for the first half of the year, then in June/july actually lose it.
I’m 44 and menopausal, losing weight is really hard for me after 40, my ideal weight is between 130 - 135lb so while my Xmas weight takes me to 140 (and still in a healthy BMI), I can really feel the difference around my stomach.
glytxh@reddit
I’ve been 9stone for a decade.
Ok_Isopod9990@reddit
As someone who had a major glow up in my early 20s, and spent my entire childhood & teens being obese, I can tell you that my weight doesn’t fluctuate around events, I stay in control.
I absolutely indulge at Christmas time but rather than loads of roasted potatoes and yorkshires I’ll have all the good meats with loads of beautiful roasted vegetables.
I’m drinking with everyone and feeling merry but I’m drinking vodka or gin and light fevertree tonic, or double whisky’s on the rocks.
So to answer your question, my weight doesn’t fluctuate at all beyond what’s normal… the occasional ice cream, or can of coke doesn’t hurt too.
The reason why 6000 calories is even possible is all the minced pies, all the roast potatoes, loads of gravy, the sweets, the chocolates, the liqueurs, the pudding, the sitting at home not working, the biscuits … etc
luala@reddit
I don’t weigh myself but my dress size doesn’t really change much. I read recently that walking at least 8000 steps a day really seems to help with weight maintenance and I’ve always walked a lot so I wonder if that’s partly why.
girlsunderpressure@reddit
Unless something goes horribly wrong my weight sits at 37-41kg all year (no correlation to seasons or holidays/occasions). But I have had an intractable eating disorder since childhood and now I'm nearly 40. Do not recommend.
UnrivalledPG@reddit
2-3 tops . I try to maintain a stable weighy
girlsunderpressure@reddit
2-3 what? Pounds? Kilos? (Hopefully not stones???)
UnrivalledPG@reddit
Kg sorry
Subaruchick99@reddit
+/- 2kg
Thrilltwo@reddit
In the past it's been very significant (between about 83KG in summers and 93KG in winters)
The last year I intended to continue dieting in the summer, thinking I could get down to my ideal weight at 81... I failed, but the highest I ended up was 87KG which in retrospect was a win in itself.
RaspberryJammm@reddit
I've been consistently gaining 0.5lb a month over the last 5 years 😬
Fragrant-Attorney-73@reddit
10kg or so
But tend to do the weight gain over summer and lose over winter.
I walk a lot over winter and sit around in summer.
RiceeeChrispies@reddit
I'm the same, I much prefer being outdoors in autumn/winter over summer, our heat is a shitter. That's probably why I'm so white and pasty.
GeggingIn@reddit
Pretty much the same. Don’t weigh myself very often, it is more about how my clothes feel on.
If the trousers are a bit tight after Christmas, will cut back in January.
HotSector8167@reddit
Mine is definitely not seasonal. Its much more tied to my routines and overall just how im doing with work and personal life. perhaps its a sign my fitness goals are hard to maintain when they fluctuate according to lifes ups and downs
TheAnxiousPangolin@reddit
My weight fluctuations are pretty minimal; I gain maybe 1kg around Christmas, but other than that I’m consistent. Eating 6000 calories on one day, plus using festivities to excuse a whole month of overeating sounds wild to me.
DrH1983@reddit
It does fluctuate a bit but never seems to get back to down to where I started
pussyseal@reddit
I feel I'm gaining weight even when I look at treats. Therefore, I stay active throughout the day (gym, swimming, tennis, cycling) and aim to reduce my calorie intake before festive periods. I look good and weigh about the same since I lost about 20 kg 3 years ago, but it's a hell of a lot of work and self-control.
limboxd@reddit
78-82kg depending on how aware I am of my eating. I think for a lot of older people what reallly gets them in beer/wine, it contains maddd calories
gemmajenkins2890@reddit
I started(half heartedly admittedly) trying to lose weight mid November last year. I dropped a lb or 2 here and there, it was very slow going.
I actually hit my lowest weight at the time 3 days before Christmas lol. By that time we’d already had several Christmas goodies out to snack on for weeks, I had my works do and other events that involved lots of consumption.
Even throughout the week or 2 around new years I didn’t put anything back on, so I’d say my weight remains pretty consistent year-round
HipKittens@reddit
About 3kg. I can even fluctuate up to 1kg per day after eating salty food. Not particularly linked to the winter season.
MudboneX3@reddit
I swear I’ve been 74-77 for the past 4 years
Stinkinhippy@reddit
I keep trousers in both 36 inch and 34 inch waist.
Weight can fluctuate by around 1.5stone or ~20lbs.
Been this way for as long as I can remember.
Ok-Rain6295@reddit
Well I’ve gained 6kg November-March. My appetite skyrockets in the winter and energy levels plummet, hence the weight gain. The summer is the opposite.
lovemycat02@reddit
I wouldn’t say my weight fluctuates much at all, 0.5kg at most
