We're in the middle of an intense, record-breaking heatwave here in the UK. The highest temperature recorded today was 34.8C at Kew Gardens, meaning the previous record for the hottest day in May has been broken by a whole 2 degrees. The record for overnight temperatures in May has also been broken, and we're increasingly having to deal with tropical nights. These temperatures would not long ago be considered exceptionally high for the UK at the peak of summer, let alone May, so I'm dreading what summer will be like.

I’ve just seen someone on the news say “is what climate change is the bring it on” how crazy.

Yeah I saw that dickhead too.

Pretty big opposition to a data center near my house, over 11000 signatures in 3 days.
People really don't want these things anywhere. I'm hearing more and more people saying we have enough technology, we don't need this crap, stop it. More people really realizing that much of technology has been harmful to the human condition and wanting to scale back. To me, a good sign.
faco_fuesday@reddit
Good luck with that. Politicians being paid by these people have a habit of ignoring their constituents.
fedfuzz1970@reddit
Yes. In the compliant red state of NC, the officials of Person County negotiated a land sale with Microsoft in complete secrecy. The negotiation was covered by NDAs and is for a data center. The citizens were not informed, there was no local input, debate or discussion or even impact studies.
faco_fuesday@reddit
I wonder if they forget that their houses are flammable
adriannaaa1@reddit
Saline, MI voted against it, the company wanting to build sued the township and they didn’t have enough money to fight the lawsuit so now they are building it anyways :(
not-a-cheerleader@reddit
anyone interested in physically blocking the build site with people? i’m close enough to join but i fear we’d need a LOT of people
popejohnsmith@reddit
Can you make more noise over there or are people resigned to it?
Zandmand@reddit
Good to know. Hope it will be enough
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
True. There is big money pushing these "data centers".

Well this is scary since we broke temperature records today at 34.8C which is a good 2C jump over previous extremes. Wildlife has been reacting strangely ... my garden has a small pond and at night there are more toads than I normally see over the course of a year. I've had groups of starlings hiding whilst sounding hungry and exhausted in my extremely overgrown Buddleia. Apart from them the bird life is exceptionally quiet. I wonder if some have decided it's time to migrate already. I've seen hardly any bees this year. Oh and my cat decided to have a full days holiday away from home which is unusual behaviour for her to say the least.
Honestly, in July or August this would once have been exceptional weather. It happening in May worries me that we may be further along into witnessing the climate impacts than I had believed. However I've been thinking of the 2020s as a liminal era and 26/27 may be the true climate boundary where we can clearly see a 'before' and 'after'.
Buckle up boys and girls, it only gets hotter from here.

Young adult moved home for the summer and we defrosted the freezer that is very full of food.
I'm kind of rethinking my plan to attempt to build a self-sufficient place for kids to try rewarding work as the decay becomes too burdensome.
This might be a good place to be for and apocalypse.
Nah, I'd rather just go fight for stuff.
Someone should try to repopulate. [Some hope sprinkled in occasionally]
Dibs out. Some other young people can do that. I don't want to live that long. [I don't believe he's aware of many details of what's coming]
No-Cost-1764@reddit
I don’t quite understand this comment. Your youngish son came home for the summer and you defrosted the freezer to feed him? Are you angry he doesn’t want to hang out and churn out more kids to die horribly in the collapse?
rematar@reddit
No. Not angry. I don't think he's aware, so I dropped a positive spin - my kids don't want kids and I share that.
My kids don't seem to have plans of ageing. At that age I didn't think I would live to an old age, the difference I hear is that they don't want to.

Obviously not a fun time right now with the heatwave and I will not comment on that because others have already. What I did find interesting, however, is the fact that 2 different people from my social circle who do not know each other said the exact same thing almost word for word less than 24 hours apart. When discussing the struggle a lot of people are going through right now with the heat, I mentioned that it will get more severe and more unpredictable in the near future. They both agreed that climate change is at play and that this should not be happening and will have systemic ramifications. However, both then tried to convince me that as it gets worse, new technologies will be developed to mitigate the effects and that 'people will come together to solve this when it gets worse'. I then mentioned that some consequences are already irreversible and even though the majority of us (us being younger people) are aware that climate change is happening, no one is working on any 'new technologies' that should become our saving grace. To my astonishment, both people then told me not to worry too much about it because humanity has a way of adapting to and overcoming adversity.
I consider both people I spoke with intelligent and they are both successul in STEM-related fields with one being a software dev and the other working in finance/trading. I also know my father holds this exact same view but hearing this from two different people almost exactly word for word reinforces to me how blissfully unaware everyone is, even as they lay in bed at night drenched in their own sweat, unable to fall asleep. I am willing to bet if (let's be honest, more likely a when than an if) we get another heatwave in the summer they will make those exact same arguments if I bring the topic up again.

All of my veg has been producing early (have a home and Community garden patch) - like 1-1.5 months early vs previous years. Some have also been wiped out by sharp frost and early heat though that came in late Feb/early March and had to start them again.

Location: Western Europe - Italy We are currently experiencing a massive heatwave with spikes of around 36c degree in Northern Italy (the average temperature in this period should be 25c), this heatwave is so massive that it's spiking temperatures all across western Europe with london enjoying 33c, Berlin 32c, Paris 32c, Oslo 25c. And this is just the beginning it is about to become much uglier very soon within an year dominated by possibly the strongest El Nino ever
Comfortably-Numb2026@reddit
“London enjoying?”
ShingenTakeda1337@reddit
Yeah it's a sarcastic way of say "suffering through". Missed the joke?

Hammock. Sleep in a hammock or camping cot. They are atretched fabric and allow your body to dump heat in all directions.
You need tome at a cooler temp for your body to have repair. Usually happens overnight. Keep yourself cool. This costs the price of the hammock or cot once and does not rely upon electricity so if power goes out you have some temperature help for your body
Also - stay hydrated and keep up on electrolytes. Salt/potassium/magnesium. There are mixes you can diy online from salt replacement, sugar etc.

Greetings from the west coast of Sweden, 14°C presently.

Beautiful country your sweden. I was in kiruna and abisko 3 months ago and it was magical, the best time of my life. When this climate will collapse and I'm forced to leave Italy because it becomes hell on earth, I hope I can find refuge in your country ahha

Absolutely awful in Bretagne as well. Not any wind either. My elderly parents keep saying "but it's only spring?!" in disbelief.

Sending hugs to you my french friend (but from a safe distance, it's already too hot and I'm sweating and stinky) . We are all fucked.
Ulfgeirr88@reddit
UK here, it's probably not going to be cool enough to walk my dogs until around midnight tonight, and more the same for tomorrow also apparently. They've not even bugged me to go out into the garden it's that bad
ShingenTakeda1337@reddit
Yeah I had to lock myself in the house today. Tomorrow is expected to be the peak here in Italy and I'm going to take my car early in the morning and escape my town. I'm going 2000m high in the mountains ( I need to drive around 2 hours and half to get there) so that I can spend the day at around 17c degrees (instead of 34), it has become that bad
Sir_Troutface@reddit
Way too fucking hot! Cannot imagine how horrendous it’s going to be in 10 years time let alone 50. Absolute fucking disaster.
ShingenTakeda1337@reddit

Location: South West France. May is now the new July. It has been a really tough 3 days. Last weekend it was below the average for May, this weekend has been the complete opposite. The heat just arrived. No gradual climb, it just suddenly appeared and now it's here, it doesn't want to go away.
