Some people will say the summer equinox (June 21) and those people are not from places where the temperature hits the 90s (30s) in May. Culturally Memorial day (today actually) marks the being and Labor day marks the end of summer traditionally. But depending on where you are you may not have seen a single day warm into the 60s f or you may have already had several over 90 degree days maybe even one into the 100s by then

It’s confusing to me that the solstice would be the start? It’s the longest day closest to the sun wouldn’t it be closer to the middle of summer? I think summer is May June July August with the solstice being close to the middle.
joe-barton74@reddit
I agree but that's what a lot of people will answer
WhatABeautifulMess@reddit
Yeah if you use the Solstice it’s like celebrating summer winding down because the days start to get shorter.

Officially: June 21. My birthday.
Unofficially: usually Memorial Day or June 1st.
cyvaquero@reddit
Calendar wise - June 21, just like every other year. If you mean activity wise, this weekend (Memorial Day) tends to mark the beginning of things like pools and amisement parks being open (if they close), and the festivals (music, art, etc) season.
Weather wise we are way to diverse, it was 90 in San Antonio yesterday and snowing in parts of Colorado.
Particular_Bet_5466@reddit
It also was 90 here in Colorado on the front range for multiple days in March. I’m considering this weekend the start of summer even though I was out hiking in snow yesterday lol. It’s generally much warmer and green on the front range now where most of us live on a day to day basis.
DreamsAndSchemes@reddit
It’s been cold and rainy in NJ. This is normally the opening weekend for the shore.
TeamTurnus@reddit
Culturally, today with memorial day.
RightFlounder@reddit
For kids, it's the last day of school.
Apocalyptic0n3@reddit
I live in Phoenix, which is a desert and very hot. In my mind we have two seasons: Summer and Not Summer. Summer starts as soon as you start regularly breaking 100F. That often happens in late April. It happened in mid-March this year for a couple weeks, but it cooled back down to 70-90 afterward. This year, it's looking like the first week of June will be the start of summer here.
Anonymous_Browing@reddit
For me, my school ended the middle of June but I’d prefer it to be sooner
Talesterr@reddit
I think Memorial day is a good kick off day for summer every year
Anonymous_Browing@reddit
I have like four weeks of school left after memorial Day.
Cyborgium241@reddit (OP)
The start of the Memorial Day weekend or Memorial Day itself?
Vert354@reddit
The start of the weekend. Basicly when all the tourist attractions switch to full time operations.
cowgrly@reddit
I agree- I know it's not official, but that's when it starts for me!
Responsible_Side8131@reddit
When you’ve got kids, summer starts immediately when the dismissal bell rings on the last day of school
little_runner_boy@reddit
In Boston area, definitely not until like mid June
ObjectiveElefant@reddit
In my mind and not based on when summer literally begins, it starts when we stop having any days that are below 80 degrees (Florida), so May. Summer is May through mid to end of November and sometimes into December here.
Teri-k@reddit
For me it always starts the day after school lets out. I'm a retired teacher in the US, and it's felt this way all my life, so I don't think it will change any time soon. My grandkids feel the same way.

Today.
cantinabandit@reddit
The day after the last day of spring.
ArizonaKim@reddit
I’m in Arizona. It already started.
Odd-Tell-5702@reddit
Our school ends on Thursday so that seems like the start of summer to me.
randypupjake@reddit
Obviously most people put June 21st but most children would say June 5th or something like that when school is out for summer break.
goblin_hipster@reddit
My birthday, which is June 21.
CrySmart@reddit
Ummmmm June 21st?
emmasdad01@reddit
Almost like that is the official start of summer.
Contrarily@reddit
Meteorlogical summer starts June 1st
ZaphodG@reddit
For me, it’s when the ocean temperature hits 68F / 20C and I go swimming. Here, that is sometime between June 15th and the end of June. Woods Hole on Cape Cod Massachusetts and is showing 58.1F and it got to 61F a couple of days ago.
EagleCatchingFish@reddit
I'll say "Depends on where you live." Where I live, I'd say summer started when the rainy season ended. It used to be spring until a little after the 4th of July. But for the past \~ 10 years, it's crept earlier and earlier. It can sometimes start in the middle of may. We've had several years in a row now where we've had \~90 days without rain.

For us it’s Mother’s Day when we open the pool.
CheyenneThornton@reddit
June 21st!
Psyko_sissy23@reddit
Depends on where you live. In most of Arizona, there is summer, medium summer, and summer light.
dwyoder@reddit
June 21 at 4:24 AM EST.
Due-Improvement9324@reddit
Depends on the region but honestly around this time, that being around Memorial Day weekend. Most areas from the south, Midwest, NE will generally start to see temperatures approaching yearly highs in about 2 months from now.
I would imagine this is quite normal around the world (northern hemisphere above whatever reasonable latitude) but I’m not sure
