Fire Extinguishers vs. Police: The Leadership Crisis in Turkey’s Main Opposition Party Reaches a Boiling Point
Posted by BedPuzzleheaded3716@reddit | AskBalkans | View on Reddit | 41 comments
Unprecedented escalation in Turkish politics: Police raided the HQ of the main opposition party (CHP) to enforce a court order reinstating the former leader, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Inside, current party members loyal to Özgür Özel resisted by locking the doors, setting up barricades, and spraying fire extinguishers at law enforcement.

Seeing as imamoglu is also a fascist dog that wants to use imperialistic tactics to expand your borders, rare W for Erdogan I guess

It seems like us Greeks and Turks aren’t so different after all when it comes to protests. On a different note what’s Song name? Sounds great.

I think it's time we share the Greek fire recipe with our neighbors. Nothing like Athenian cocktails 🍸
iheartloud420@reddit
Wish we were more like greeks in this aspect

The Turkish supreme court, not sure if that's the right term, has appointed a new leader for the opposition party, essentially turning it into a puppet party of Erdogan.
Capable_Studio_6631@reddit
I'm very confused, how can any court rule as to who will lead a party?
npaakp34@reddit
Why do you think the actual party is resisting? And apparently it's not even the supreme court, just a local court.
Capable_Studio_6631@reddit
Damn... so its that blatantly illegal :D
npaakp34@reddit
That's autocracies for ya.
UnhappyBreadfruit607@reddit
Not even supreme court it was some local court and constitutionally not even supreme Court has authority to do so only supreme election council can do it and it's authority last few days after election not few years of elections
npaakp34@reddit
Damn, even worse than I thought
UnhappyBreadfruit607@reddit
You know it's bad when MHP who is known for their goverment support and their lack of respect for the rules openly critised the desicion
Putrid_Speed_5138@reddit
It is not a "leadership crisis" in the main opposition.
It is President Erdogan, shutting down the main opposition party by using a puppet and lots of police.
Previously, he had sent the main opposition's presidential candidate to jail.
Financial-Newt2291@reddit
He has been doing this for 20 years.
Iron_Axios@reddit
"president erdogan"? Do you you mean dictator?
Putrid_Speed_5138@reddit
President is an official title, dictator is not.
Saddam, Pinochet, Marcos, Milosevic etc. were all presidents.
Character_Hamster890@reddit
Very accurate.

Look up ''Cem Karaca Çökertme'' on youtube. I think it is one of the best versions but you will probably see hundreds of others. Just pick your choosing.

Much appreciated brother.

Happy to. It is not everyone's cup of tea as it is older generation Anatolian rock. But still, you'll find many artist with similar music such as Erkin Koray or Barış Manço. It is an interesting genre to say the least.

Maybe Türkiye can become like Greece and have elections every year
AST360@reddit
Former leader of the opposition, Kılıçdaroğlu, who has a track of losing elections and has lost against Erdogan in 2023 (after blocking 2 far better candidates who were winning in polls) was deposed by the cadres of the blocked candidate with second highest polls for opposition, Ekrem İmamoğlu (mayor of İstanbul now in jail). Kılıçdaroğlu has returned to the seat of the main opposition with judicial order. İmamoğlu, mayor is İstanbul is in jail and Kılıçdaroğlu is expected to remove him from the party in return.

Funny thing about this is, there is conflict of state institutions. Sure, the court could in theory call the in-party election invalid, but high board of elections openly said courts decision is not binding as there is no legal reason for it to be, and they are the higher authority so they decide whether the party could proceed to elections or not. Court sent them their decision exoecting them to enforce it, but they refused.
So on one hand, according to board of elections, courts decisious doesn't mean anything and in-party elections were right, so they recognize the party leadership. On the other hand, a court overruled to change party leadership and police is trying to enforce it.
Constitutionally, both the court and the police are breaking the law, trying to enforce a decision that is not legally binding. Higher courts will eventually overrule against the lower courts decision. Government is only trying to buy time so that they can create a faux case against current party leader and legitimize this court decision.
Worst case, CHP will either form a new party or join with SHP probably form an alliance with ZP.
