A typical Sony compact Hifi System 95 vs 2000

In just a few years the cassette players where gone from many Hifi compact systems..
Not all.. but this is a good example of the shift to fully digital world at around 2000
Also the Design changed dramatically.. 90s Hifi is this typical black design, 2000 everything got lighter, slimmer and they loved Silver..

I bought my JVC UX-1 (which I think bears some resemblance to the 1995 Sony system) with $470 of paper route and poker money in 1992 and had it well into adulthood. It sounded way beyond its size.

It’s amazing how quickly silver went from “wow so cool and futuristic” to “look at that cheap thing”.

why don't they put mesh over the speaker cones anymore? i have been wondering

A bit bruised and tempered by the times but still kicking. I got this as a teenager, prolly 99 or 00. Currently using it as the output for my PC( I am not taking a picture from the whole setup as it is a kinda messy desk). CD and cassette decks are broken unfortunately and the remote is lost

So glad I dodged the minidisc craze. DRM and slight compression. I ended up getting a Marantz digital recorder and burning that to CD. So, all my archives are either 24/96 or 16/44.1 and no compression!

Ya, no one I knew could afford that.

Everyone I know had the Aiwa 3 CD mini system from either Costco or sears. I remember, it would hold and play one CD while the rest came out and you could load 2 other CDs. I remember thinking that it was the pinnacle of design.

I had a 5-disc with dual cassette deck. Think it was from Best Buy though.

I'm from the opposite side of the Atlantic, so not Costco or Sears, and I had this stereo! It transcended nations and borders 😂 Always gimme that black finish too.

poor sony and their failed formats
Suitable_Garlic_1186@reddit (OP)
They failed the format.. It could have been a total gamechanger..

It was huge in Japan when I was stationed there, we were all buying compilations and bootlegs with multiple albums per cart, then we got home and the tech had come and gone here, you couldn't even find blank discs let alone produced compilations.

I still have a portable player and a hifi similar to the second example with a player. I've a bunch of stuff that's not on Spotify and for me it's the best physical format.

AIWA

Typical? Bro this shit was expensive.

I kept one like that out by the hot tub growing up. Nothing like some Bob Marley on a snowy night.

I totally crave the 90s design.. Also with CRTs.. never liked the silver Design, it looks cheaper..

I had one of those silver CRT TVs. It was so friggin heavy. My back is grateful for lightweight flat screens.
In the house I was running a Mitsubishi 5.1 Dolby/DTS system. 500w on the amp and a 120w sub. I miss that system baaaad.
