It was fun while it lasted... They're advertising now.

Title image says it all.
Never bodes well when the marketers arrive.
ttkciar@reddit
Folks attacking OP for denying capitalism or whatever are missing the point.
The point is that marketing the technology to the masses is going to further enshittify the field and bring a fresh flood of insufferable entitled newbs to this subreddit who feel like we all owe them something.
However much this makes good business sense for Alibaba, we should all be dreading the consequences.
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
You got it exactly right. Don't have the energy explain let them believe what they want.
They're pivoting from they're core fan base which is the Open source community, they're pivot will absolutely work make no doubt about it. But at the cost of us
LetsGoBrandon4256@reddit
I'm sure the Chinese company is now saddened because they've lost their core fan base, the loyal, tech-savvy localllama bros.
ttkciar@reddit
I read "at the cost of us" as a slightly mangled form of "at our cost".
brahh85@reddit
OP enjoys the idea that open weight will cease to exist, and that labs will turn their backs on us, the problem with that view is that we never had more open weight models than now, we never had more labs contributing, the gap between closed weights and open weights is shorter than ever, we have models from 0B to 1.7 T , and the best model per parameter, qwen 3.6 27B , was just released one month ago, by alibaba, 2 weeks later SAE-Res qwen 3.5 was released by alibaba, and then qwen webworld was released by alibaba.
ttkciar@reddit
After reviewing OP's account history, I can find no evidence for this claim. Are you perhaps confusing them with someone else?
Southern_Sun_2106@reddit
At some point you were new here too. Or is it 'different and I don't understand?'
swagonflyyyy@reddit
I thought their mascot was flipping us off lmao.

Their marketing seriously needs work. Normies don't care about bar charts
dsanft@reddit
Presumably you live off thin air and vibes, and don't need to make money to survive like the rest of us, so a business trying to make money probably comes as quite the shock to your senses.
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
I use qwen as my daily driver. Qwen 35b. I support qwen. I donate to qwen They're also subsidized by they're government. I was hoping they'd still release open weight models till they're qwen 5 series maybe but advertisers means death of modest money. They want aggressive AI money now
dsanft@reddit
Have you given them a single dollar? If not then you don't support Qwen. You just get shit for free.
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
If you look carefully at the comment you're replying to. You'll see there it says I donate to qwen i have a Alabama cloud account where I pay for they're cloud service. Its about $50 a month. I pay every 3 months. The point is.. I know it's value and I see the need to pay for it
SpaceRaisins@reddit
Wdym you donate to qwen? Since when did qwen take donations?
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
English is my 5th language. Whatever the appropriate wording you needed so you don't obscurly misrepresent what I'm trying to say.
Use those words when you read the obvious thing I'm saying here
bobby-chan@reddit
To donate and to pay for a subscription are very different things. As a subscriber, you contribute to the business model of a system on what they evaluated would be sustainable. Donations, even if they are monthly, don't necessarily correlate with sustainability. Also, even if not always the case, donations may imply some type of non-profit organisation or foundation like allenai.org . If Alibaba had started this type of org for Qwen, a lot of people would be interested to see the details, especially since it would be a move at the opposite of openai.
Sextus_Rex@reddit
They built something cool. Why the fuck wouldn't they tell people about it
suprjami@reddit
Your argument is that Qwen have released an API model so we'll never see open weights again?
Qwen 2.5 Max, January 2025:

Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
No it's that they are advertising.
Things never bode well when they start advertising.
gingerbeer987654321@reddit
For geopolitical reasons China will continue to make models available through open source, as it directly challenges the private capitalist AI companies in the West.
Don't be surprised if Qwen3 Max will be available as a paid service for a lot less than Claude/OpenAI, and we keep getting 27B style run-at-home options too.
Enjoy it while it lasts - its a bit like when Saudi Arabia tried to bankrupt US shale oil companies by pushing down prices and we all benefited as a byproduct.
Able-Panda621@reddit
There is one Chinese food delivery app which made ton of open source model, including a 2-3B image+video gen model.
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
Hope so will hoard all the models they release before they decide to stop
x86rip@reddit
They can advertise and open-weight at the same time. What contradicts here ?
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
If you can list 5 companies that started as open weight. And continued releasing good quality open weights after commercialising.
Without listing the following. Mitral - not too bad models but not good either Deepest - were here because of the goat deepseek
I will be at ease. Not typically how companies move in this Ai space. They might be the first who knows.
valeeraslittlesharky@reddit
They advertise their open source (27b) model the same way. This post is retarded.

Hey, welcome to Reddit.
redditscraperbot2@reddit
First time?
-wan 2.2 user
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
Wan was so great. How does ltx2.3 compare? Actually can anything compare to Wan Animate?
redditscraperbot2@reddit
It's actually pretty good and promises to get better. But a lot of Wan users are being dragged kicking and screaming into LTX.
It's not as mature as the Wan ecosystem but it promises to get there. It's also fast.
Local-Cardiologist-5@reddit (OP)
If I try remember correctly one of thebpain points of moving was the control wan had natively. With ltx you have to use controller and lords and all such. Hope ltx2.3 releases some models before they also want max bucks
justpokingaroundrq@reddit
Its possible to open source license to consumers and still charge businesses - should be the obvious move

The capybara mascot is flipping the wrong finger at us.

Yep, at first sight I saw a middle finger. I was wrong but I was right.

People on Reddit are still surprised that companies work for profit? Who pays for your food?
