Those of us who listened to thrash growing up, how do you feel about thrash now?

I still love metal, these days mostly stoner doom and sludge. Grew up an Anthrax freak, but listening to them now isn’t great. However, Anthrax had a huge impact on my teenage years so it’s a bummer that Anthrax doesn’t hit the way it used to. Megadeth and Metallica fare better, but with the black album, thrash really fell into decline. Slayer to me is the thrash pinnacle. South of Heaven and God Hates Us All are two favorite all time albums. Even their 90’s stuff after Seasons was good, at least to me. Exodus was always bleh to me except for several Rob Duke’s tracks that were basically the rebirth of thrash for a bit. Now Thy Death Day come is brutal and crushes. Testament, Nuclear Assault, and Overkill still sound pretty good.

The last album Mr. Bungle released, 2020's The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, is a legit thrash masterpiece.

Listened to thrash and death metal back then, still do today. Still wear my battle vest. Still go to shows. Metal is either in your blood or it isn't.
Some great thrash coming out these days too. Saw Ravager about a year ago and they absolutely destroyed. Tons of bands still making great music.

Besides Orbit Culture and Sold Soul I don't listen to much thrash nowadays. In my mid 50s and listen to a lot of deathcore and metalcore now. Also, my musical tastes have expanded, I listen to some rap and pop. Like you, I got into electronic music, mainly aggrotech.
djauralsects@reddit
I got into thrash with Ride the Lightning in 1984. I tuned out at the Black album in 1991. But for those seven years thrash was life. I saw all the big four multiple times during that period and played in a thrash band.
I got into Jane’s Addiction, Soundgarden, Green River, Mudhoney and Nirvana in 1988/89, the last couple years of high school. I’m in Vancouver, the drinking age is 19, I had fake ID, it was the perfect time and place to see grunge and alternative bands in the clubs before they blew up.
Arena shows like the big four were playing really can’t compare to those club gigs. I was hooked. I still won’t go to an arena or stadium show. I think I’ve been to two in the last 45 years.
My band broke up in 1994, my dad died, and I backpacked around Europe for six months. I got turned on to electronic music and rave culture. I left a metal head and came back a raver. I listen to a lot of diverse music now but still lean heavy into electronica.

I'm very much a thrash fan, and always have been. Aside from the likes of Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead etc, thrash was my real introduction to metal, as I started listening to it in late 86/87 and aside from G'N'R, and earlier death metal albums, that was the most exciting thing back then, and it would still be the style I most gravitate to.
I disagree on Anthrax, in so far as their classic 80's albums go, and even later records like Worship Music, they still very much stand up for me. I also saw them live again a few months ago and they were immense.
Slayer are still pretty respectable in my book, even if none of their albums after the early 90's is a favourite, although there are always some great tracks to be found. And they have always delivered live. But for me, all due respect to Gary Holt (Huge Exodus fan) and Paul Bostaph, but it's just not the same without Hanneman and Lombardo. They just brought that extra spark to the band that can't be replaced.
Metallica and Megadeth have made some decent music later in their career, even if it isn't on par with the classics. Overkill, Exodus, Testament, Sodom, Destruction, Razor, Death Angel, Onslaught, Voivod etc are all still excellent, the new Coroner record is fantastic, and Evil Dead, Vio-lence and Heathen have released some more than decent later albums.
The best thing about thrash for me is how well so many of the 80's albums have held up, and not just by the well known bands. The likes of Devastation, Apocalypse, Sacrifice, Assassin, Iron Angel, Hobbs Angel Of Death, Wargasm (Boston), Artillery, Faith Or Fear, At War, Viking, Blood Feast, Tankard, Holy Terror, Rigor Mortis etc made some blistering records, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There have been some decent thrash and black/thrash records by newer bands too.
Thrash may be the sub-genre that has aged the best, and will probably endure the longest.

I would still love to see Death Angel & Overkill; kicking myself I just missed them in ATL. I saw slayer once. Saw Merciful Fate a few years ago and Kreator and Mudnight & it ripped!!!!
VirtuaFighter6@reddit
Still love the big four but probably wouldn’t bother to see them. Maybe Anthrax or Slayer because it would be more reasonably priced. Musical tastes have changed as I get older. Find myself listening to Excision and loving it.
darkNergy@reddit
Yeah I grew up on thrash but it just doesn't hit hard enough anymore. These days I'm into mostly death, doom, and stoner metal.
MrMilesRides@reddit
BITD: Metallica, Slayer, Voivod, Exodus, Anthrax, M.O.D., Sacred Reich, D.R.I., C.O.C. Nuclear Assault, Testament, Overkill, Annihilator, Megadeth... Metal Church (if that counts...)
I have to be honest - I still love all this stuff, but I don't listen to it that often. I kinda stopped paying attention to a lot of them after a certain point - so the records I'll put on are already the "sweet spot" for my taste. I dig new stuff from Exodus, Voivod, and Testament - the new Anthrax sounded promising...
The exception to that was when I was still bike messengering - 2:30 pm every day the law firms we serviced would start losing their marbles 😆. Headphones on, my Exodus/DRI/Lace/COC playlist cued up, and it's ON for the next 3 hours. Fun times.
I am having fun trying to find the gems that I missed out on before. Kreator, Death Angel, Sodom etc.
Curious if you've found any of the newer 'revival' thrash bands that do it for you?
storm_the_castle@reddit
maybe try Power Trip and Fugitive
Wacko_Banana_Pants@reddit
X2 on Power Trip. I'd also add Get The Shot
Wacko_Banana_Pants@reddit
Like you, I loved Anthrax but listening now it just doesn't hold up. But they also have a new song and it's not bad. I was a huge Metallica fan but now I prefer Megadeth and Overkill. Slayer always, no need to argue that. Sepultura and Death Angel are still in my rotation. I still enjoy Suicidal Tendancies and while I think Trujillo is a great bassist, Metallica hasn't written a single good song since Jason left. Lamb of God is my current fave. Grunge is my sweet spot though as I was legally in bars when Pearl Jam dropped although I was a Soundgarden fan long before. I have a huge playlist of Emo/Screamo bands. I'm currently digging on Architects. But I spent all day yesterday on the deck, smoking cigars, and listening to The Cure, Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears, etc
UnrealizedDreams90@reddit
Graduated 90. Still love it, and have even gotten into some of the smaller bands I never spent my money on. It's not, and wasn't, all I was into, but it hasn't lost any of It's charm for me.
badhoopty@reddit
i couldnt stand anthrax's vocals until the bush era, which is weird because i love overkill which is far more shrill.

I grew up listening to the 83-89 era of thrash. This is my lane and I stay in it.

As a teen I was into Maiden, Sabbath, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Zeppelin, but slid into punk.
I skipped Metallica etc. in the 80s and didn’t really listen until my kid forced me to in the 2000s, when we took guitar lessons together when he was 12-16.
Attended shows with my kid: Anthrax/Slayer/Death Angel at ACL theater, Megadeth/Lamb of God, Exodus/Cannibal Corpse.
I appreciate the music. It weaseled its way into my music library. Slayer is probably skipped less when it hits my shuffle.
But I’d still rather let the crazed and twisted in via old school punk, noise and such. Some of that clearly doesn’t resonate as a 60 year old. I still enjoy.
My music listening has way expanded in so many directions it’s still fun to hear the old stuff that marked me as a young in’.
TrickyCartographer73@reddit
Anthrax was also in heavy rotation in my teen years. Still love Anthrax. They’re the only thrash I listen to… Going to see them again, with Maiden and Megadeth.
MAdcock6669@reddit
Still listening to thrash and death metal.....along with a myriad of others

I met Chuck Billy at EPICOT. It made my speed metal dreams come true. These days, I still love it.
Vegaprime@reddit
Still listen as my anxiety allows.
ChronoMonkeyX@reddit
Just saw Death Angel last week, they played all of Act III, and they were awesome. They sounded as good now as I would have hoped they would if I saw them in the 90s.
Incite and Vio-lence opened for them, didn't care for either singer, but the first bands drummer was really good, and the second one's guitar was really interesting when the singer wasn't singing.
hanzobust75@reddit
Still love thrash, still love Anthrax. Among The Living never gets old for me.

Wait for Apple stock to go public
museman401@reddit
Early Metallica and Pantera still awesome in my opinion. Never got into slayer or megadeth.
KnightKrawler68@reddit
Still love the old thrash bands but also the ones they inspired like Lamb of God, Slipknot, Gojira, Cradle of Filth, Arch Enemy and others.
I dabble in other genres from time to time but heavy music is still the king for me.

I never listened to it much besides the token Metallica or Megadeath song. Wasn't really my bag. I listen to it now more than ever. My daughter is 14 and she loves thrash metal. It's not something I will fire up on my own Spotify but I enjoy it enough when we are together and she is playing it.
Parking-Explorer6802@reddit
Still love it

I went all over the map. Started with Van Halen (I still listen to them). In high school I got into hair metal, then trash, then kinds of all rock.
Now I’ve really mellowed out and I’m into more of the singer/songwriter types. Kind of funny when I think about it.

Check this out. This is a new band that gets it.

Still listen to thrash. Anthrax was best during early Belladonna years. After persistence it just became meh...

I know I did right by my son(22) when he comes in to the room singing along with any of the bands/songs I have been listening to since I was younger than him.
Makes this old man smile.
He, much like myself, had a taste for all genres of music. I get a kick out of him sharing my CDs with his friends and them asking me about shows I went to. Good times.
052-NVA@reddit
I played it out so hard. Now the only album I’ll pull out occasionally is Ride the Lightning. The only one that stuck with me. But put on any of the great classics when I’m drunk, and I still know most of the air guitar parts
Chango13@reddit
I'm a 59 year old guy that likes thrash better now than i did when I was in my teens. I was a NWOBHM dude, and thought thrash sounded too much like American hardcore, which I really hated at the time. Flash forward all these decades later, and I like thrash a whole lot more now. I listen to Death Angel, Testament, and Exodus waaaay more than I did when I was a kid. Absolutely love Municipal Waste and thought that Kerry King solo record was the fkkng bomb, for newer stuff. And then, the crossover stuff like Candy, Drain, Dead Heat, Fugitive, etc, etc... love all that, too.
thedarkforest_theory@reddit
I was a fan, but sonically have moved on. I will go see shows from time to time. I’ve been to two Slayer fair well tours. Plus, I just saw Overkill. Right now, I’m in a 90’s industrial phase.
teachthisdognewtrick@reddit
Grew up with SF Bay Area thrash. So many great bands.
mrepa1369@reddit
I don't listen to much thrash at all anymore. Back in the 80's I thought speed and technical playing was cool. Now I prefer solid riffs and good grooves. I still like 80's thrash, but it's not the same.
speedincuzihave2poop@reddit
I listen to it interspersed with a lot of Groove and Doom metal myself. So I definitely understand. They get rotation in my list, just not as much.
mrepa1369@reddit
Same. It's still there, just not like it used to be.
Junior_Lavishness_96@reddit
I still love it. Thrash was my favorite. I rarely ever listen to it though.
speedincuzihave2poop@reddit
Agreed. Many of the bands from that day don't hit nearly as hard. I will fight people over early Metallica (first four albums) and Early Megadeth. I liked lot's of bands other than the few you have listed though here, like Sepultura and Flotsam and Jetsom and Death Angel. There is no lack of stuff to listen to from the genre and the Era.
