Is this an inert 20mm?

A friend left this at my house a while ago and I am wondering if it is a practice round or not. No headstamps. And from what I remember, yellow means boom.
davper@reddit
When I was in the service, blue painted rounds meant practice inert.
The safe thing to do is take it to local law enforcement to dispose of.
Important-Dream-4010@reddit
Primer says it’s live
jestertoo@reddit
Very much looks like a live 20x102 and m56a3. Call bomb squad/ EOD and let them pick it up.
fordag@reddit
Why are you being downvited?
What the fuck is wrong with Redditors?
davper@reddit
Oh so many things.
ColonelSanders1855@reddit
Bc for some redditors, this is your sign to buy a 20mm rifle.
fordag@reddit
LOL. If I already owned a 20mm rifle I wouldn't shoot that cartridge.
NoOnesSaint@reddit
No head stamp or markings say questionable but better to be safe than sorry.
ClayQuarterCake@reddit
No head stamp on the 20mm Lake City makes. I believe they are the largest supplier of this round right now. Not sure how old that one is.
Remote_Teach1164@reddit
Actually there is no way to tell if this case is Lake City made, there were many plants like Amron Corp. Antigo Plant, Networks Electric Corp., etc. but surely Lake City loaded the entire cartridge.
MandaloreZA@reddit
My 25mm Vulcan spent brass with spent primers don't have a head stamp. I don't know if newer big bore stuff has head stamps tbh.
p0l4r1@reddit
And yellow is most commonly indicator of HE shell
Party_Stack@reddit
Weigh it. A live round weighs ~260 grams, an inert round would weigh ~200-220 grams.
EzPup@reddit
This should be the top comment.
biscuits4dayz@reddit
Looks pretty nert to me

Grab a hammer and screw driver and send that John!
TNLongrange@reddit
If it was inert the projectile would be blue. The yellow denotes the type of rounds it is. If i remember right, and I may not its been a very long time since I handled these, yellow means armor piercing.
That looks like a live round.

See, deactivated.
HarvEx1RCR@reddit
It’s a 25mm HEI-T from a Bushmaster. Not 20mm like everyone keeps saying. Bradley uses em, LAV3 uses em.
Tasty-You-9472@reddit
I know I leave my 20mm-HE rounds at my friend's houses all the time.. happens all the time 👌
smokeyser@reddit
If you're going to store explosives, it's always better to do it at a friend's house than at yours.
Inevitable-Sleep-907@reddit
One way to find out for sure. Grip it real tight and smack that button on the back with a hammer
Just be sure to record it... you know.. for science and shit
Remote_Teach1164@reddit
How can you even detonate the electric primer with just a nail and a hammer?
AmnFucker@reddit
Some old 20mm rounds are percussion primed depending on the application. No way to tell without markings.
Slippi_Fist@reddit
oh man you are so yesterday with your non-electric nails - get over it, we've moved on gramps
Sal-LeMandeur@reddit
My would-be uncle died as a child doing almost exactly that...
Killermondoduderawks@reddit
You could play redneck roulette: have everyone gather round the bonfire and throw it in
If your buddy next to you has a hole in his chest the size of a basketball you know it as live
basilis120@reddit
ah sadly it will make a loud bang, likely throw some sparks and embers. Worst case the primer flies out and hit someone. No bullets flying around. There is no chamber to contain the pressure.
Lampwick@reddit
Yeah, shrapnel from the HE round going off is probably the bigger issue. I swear, for a firearms sub it's kind of surprising ho many people don't know how how a fuckin' gun works. Powder burn! Powder push bullet out barrel like cork from champagne bottle!. No barrel, no push!
Slippi_Fist@reddit
"redneck roulette" is new to me.
should know I passed lemonade through my nose comic book fashion. thanks.
South-City1632@reddit
You never threw 22s in a campaign fire before?
Its a fun prank.
Killermondoduderawks@reddit
Glad to be of service
ahippyapunk4ever@reddit
Live HE 20mm round. Used in the Bradley and Striker Infantry Fighting Vehicle. Source, 2003 Invasion of Iraq. US Army combat veteran 2001-2004.
jestertoo@reddit
Bradley uses a 25x 137, not the 20 mm.
Travel_Dreams@reddit
⬆️ this ⬆️ is what we needed!
Why is is way down here?
So much: "Film it! Wipe it on the drapes, and then slap its bum with a 12v hammer".
Purple_Calico@reddit
Unless he painted to look like a live round... no, that's not inert in way.
For clarification, that color scheme on the projectile and its two piece construction leads me to believe its some variation of HE-I.
Stuffed_deffuts@reddit
Hmm, new episode of Is It A Good Idea To Microwave This?
ziekktx@reddit
Where's styropyro when you need him?
Remote_Teach1164@reddit
Regarding being unfired, the detonator may not be aligned to the firing pin so it can withstand high impact without going off, but I wouldn't do that.
Prestigious-Jicama65@reddit (OP)
Time find BLM land and toss it in a microwave lol
OctavianStoleras@reddit
If you shake it, do you hear powder inside?
Indierocka@reddit
Why isn’t this higher? If it was designed to be inert it shouldn’t have anything in there
basilis120@reddit
Also there is a good chance you won't here anything depending on how full the case is.
GodsaveUkraine@reddit
Dummy and Practice rounds will have holes drilled in the side(s) of the cartridge case; or maybe indents pressed into the sides of the case.
blackhorse15A@reddit
If it was designed to be inert there would be two holes drilled through the brass cartridge case and blue paint on the projectile.
Lanky-Strike3343@reddit
My cusin would put sand in 50 cals to stop them from tipping so I would go based on just that
Brewtown@reddit
Aren't some of these 20 mike Mikes depleted uranium?
ManufacturerLost7686@reddit
Yellow paint usually means live. But it depends on what country its from, some color code differently.
Riker557118@reddit
Well quickest way to find out would be to hit it with a sledgehammer.
Serious answer is to call the bomb squad, if you bribe them with some bbq they might let you push the button ton dispose of it.
gistya@reddit
Yeah this.

Call the police or state police or 911 and report having found a military high explosive round. Say you want it disposed of properly. Do not handle or move it. Assume it is live AND UNSTABLE.
wiscopunk@reddit
Looks quite nert to me
4myreditacount@reddit
Its nert or nothin
monicainabimmer@reddit
I will take that off your hands brother
wintermute916@reddit
That will take off your hands brother
LemonMan1738@reddit
Looks like 25mm bro
map2photo@reddit
Yeah, I would be treating that as a love round.

Jedinutcracker@reddit
tap that primer with a hammer and nail and find out
(please dont do that)
Quizzii@reddit
Please record if you do it
ilkikuinthadik@reddit

Ideally
Obvious-Penalty-1521@reddit
I had one the same as yours but it was grey and marked dummy round or something in very small stamps on the side of the casing. That’s a real one dude.
Agammamon@reddit
Inert rounds are blue. The solid yellow marking means its a High Explosive round. With a red band around the top would be SAPHEI.
That may be a dummy/demilitarized copy
Weigh it. If its significantly more or less than 240-315g its probably a dummy.
hamsterpotpies@reddit
Only one way to find out. Hit the primer with a nail / hammer /s
Martin_Sweetwater@reddit
Only one way to find out 🔨

Lightly shake it, any powder in there?

BOOF IT!!!
Sorry wrong sub
GunsAndWrenches2@reddit
Potentially live.
Can you easily screw off the nose fuse to check inside the projectile?
dave1004411@reddit
It's live call police and get there EOD to handle it the markings are gone it could be explosive
aquaCJA@reddit
From the belly of the whale: is this a real whale?
T_h3n@reddit
Touch a 12v battery to the back of it.
Remote_Teach1164@reddit
If the fuze was unable to be unscrewed, the only way is to put that on X-ray.
That being said, if you are concerned about the safety, calling authorities is the best way to deal with this. But surely 20mm M56 series has a better fuze safety mechanism than M75 fuze.
