How Are You Dealing With The Heat?

I’m visiting London right now and the heat is unbearable. How are you dealing with it? The only places I’ve found that reliably have air conditioning seem to be Sainsbury’s and Tesco. I have yet to find a place to sit and have a drink without melting into a puddle.

Bernoulli's Principle and strategic use of 3 fans. House is really cool. It's 32°C outside.

For me it’s windows open in day shut at night
gostan@reddit
Good way to make your house hotter
stauer88@reddit
Only if inside is colder than outside.
My house faces West so the sun is beaming through my windows till it sets. If I have the windows closed then my bedroom just sucks up all the heat despite it actually starting to cool down outside. Windows open from about 5 mean I have a hope of sleeping.
justcallmeeva@reddit
I have south facing windows so can relate. Closing windows and curtains (preferably black out) really helps, and keeping the windows open overnight halo to cool it down overnight.
TheMonkeyInCharge@reddit
It does depend on the house. We have a metal roof and the bedrooms are in it (I know), so even being south facing not opening the windows just makes it boil.

It's not crazy hot.
Sitting in a garden in the shade with a cool drink. I went for a bike ride earlier, before lunch and now enjoying a rest.
g0dn0@reddit
I’ll be dealing with it by writing to my MP. I didn’t vote Brexit so that we could import our weather from southern Spain. We have our own weather here and it’s nothing like this. I dread to think how much tax payer’s money is being spent importing our weather when our own weather is free. It’s OUTRAGEOUS. Probably another government quango.

Down in Cornwall. It's about 30 degs today. Bit humid but it always is. It's warm but not hot. I like it.
I'm pottering about outside doing a bit of painting and DIY because it's nice out and it's the first time it's been dry for a bit. Indoors it's about 22-23 as the house hasn't caught up yet.
Kinda feels that summer has finally arrived.
redditor_no_69@reddit
Feels like 'summer has finally arrived'? That's what you say when you have no hot weather til something like late July. Makes no sense saying it in May! 🌞
dwair@reddit
Prior to the last few days it's been cold and wet down here in the far SW since last August. Our nice weather normally starts off in mid April so it's late this year for us, especially after a record breaking wet and gloomy winter. Granted its a warmer than it would have been 5 weeks ago but it's nice to have a few days of warm dry weather.

super_sammie@reddit
Honestly the best things I ever did was get a portable AC unit.
I’ve spent the last 2 days in my son’s room with the dog at a nice and chilly 16 degrees.
A library will probably be suitably temperature controlled?
stickleer@reddit
Yep this, they are only about £200 for a decent one (7000-9000BTU), they don't cost that much to run and they are incredibly effective at cooling down a room. I bought one 4 years ago, heat waves, hot days and uncomfortable sleeping all a thing of the past.
kazman@reddit
How do you vent the hot air?
stickleer@reddit
portable air cons come with a pipe you attach to the window, for most UK windows however which open outwards, you need a window kit (costs about £10)
andypanty69@reddit
So not one of those "John was a student whose friend always complained about the classroom so he invented this new invention using his decades of experience in the power industry who are trying to buy him out as his device, the size of a small pencil case, smaller than the refrigerator system he used to design for NASA rockets, and it's been in such demand that he only has a few left in his warehouse which he is eager to sell at a reduced price because it will solve world hunger" unit?
On the serious side...I only have two sensors working but neither seems to have dipped below 27 all night.

Portable AC unit for living room during the day and bed room at night. Fan for other bedroom. Above ground pool, ice bath thing and sprinkler. Not going anywhere in this heat! 5 year old son is loving it. 18 month old struggling along with mum and dad!
Qorce@reddit
Freeze some grapes, let them melt in your mouth, it cools you down pretty well.
Also fill a hot water bottle, freeze it and you can wrap it in a towel and add it under your bedding at night or place if infront of a fan for a cooler breeze
Fibro-Mite@reddit
I simply don't leave the house unless I absolutely have to, and being retired due to disability, that's easier for me to manage. I also follow the hot weather rules I learned living in Perth Western Australia (16 years and only 1 year of that was in a house with aircon) - open windows early (if you haven't already had them open all night) to get cool air in only for as long as it's cooler outside than in; as soon as the heat starts to rise, shut all windows and any curtains and blinds to insulate the house from getting any hotter inside for as long as possible; stay in rooms on the opposite side of the house to the sun, if you can; do NOT open curtains, doors or windows until it is once again cooler inside than out and keep them open all night if you can - in Aus they are usually sliding windows, side to side, with flyscreens attached to the outside of the frames, so you open them up a few inches and drop a rod into the track to prevent them being pushed open any further by a potential burglar. In the UK we open the top windows in all rooms upstairs a few inches during the night to get a flow through of air and prop all of the bedroom doors open. We also invested in a portable aircon unit for the bedroom the year I was diagnosed with breast cancer (I'm fine now, NED - No Evidence of Disease - currently) because the meds made my hot flashes exponentially worse and sweating through the mattress wasn't a nice experience.

I live just outside london, where there is countryside and lakes and places to swim when you cant take the heat any longer. Thats what I've done the last 2 days and what i will have to do today also. My house is very cool, but depressing to sit inside all day. If I sit in the garden I'll just bake.

The heat in the UK is unbearable when it gets hot like this and more so down where you are. I have fans and humidifiers going in my home and avoid going out if I can, but that because I have allergic reactions to pollen so this weather is a pain for that. I also have a hand held fan, it rechargeable and works well when I'm out in the heat, and I also stay well covered up.
Flashy_Let3664@reddit

I fall apart in hot weather but all my loved ones wanted to 'enjoy the weather' this weekend, so I've had to basically just grin and bear it. Loose layers, sunscreen, walking slowly and in the shade, avoiding heavy meals, drinking plenty of water (in an insulated bottle to keep cold).
Also lying on the kitchen floor is a new favourite this year 😆

My garden is southwest facing, so it’s boiling hot at the back but my living room at the front is staying relatively cool. The kitchen has a stone tile floor so that’s permanently cold too, perfect for the dog.
Upstairs is getting hot. Even with windows open it is 24c in my bedroom at 5.30am today. Living room is 20c. If it stays roasting hot for weeks on end the whole house eventually gets too hot & then the fan comes out.
Wubbleyou_@reddit
Close the windows mate. You’re pulling the hot air in.
lovepeacefakepiano@reddit
Suffer. Especially on the tube. A couple of years ago my commute started on the Central Line and then continued on the Victoria Line, so that was fun.
Those little handheld electric fan things help a tiny bit. Or actual fans, honestly. Old buildings with nice thick walls are cooler inside. Become very religious and hang out in churches a lot, maybe.

Wubbleyou_@reddit
We do this. It really helps. Although I keep bashing my head on it.
sanddancer08@reddit
Genuine question - wouldn't that make the house hotter? My loft is always roasting in hot weather.
seadoubleyou73@reddit
warm air rises, so the idea is for it to have somewhere to go from your home upwards. In reality you're right, your loft space is roasting and although the hot air stays up there the heat will still radiate down (remember radiation, convection and conduction from school?)
coveredinbreakfast@reddit
It pulls heat up higher. I really makes a difference in our house.
happyhippohats@reddit
My parents always gripe at me for keeping my curtains closed but it"s about 5 degrees cooler in my flat compared to their house...
DinkyPrincess@reddit
This.
Close curtains and doors where feasible. Stops heat being trapped.
I air the bedroom early (pre 6am) then close it up.
Keep the downstairs curtains or blinds closed. Doors and windows closed when it’s hotter outside than in. Use fans. Then open up when the outer temperature drops below indoors.
lady_is_a_one@reddit
I was also going to comment this 👍 - shut blinds and curtains early morn - don’t make the mistake of opening the window (not until evening time).
Spray water on yourself and let it evaporate, that will cool you down. As well as a cool shower, of course.
Breathable fabrics: cotton, linen. No man made fibres.
Watermelon is also a personal fave of mine if you enjoy it 😊 from the fridge.

God muggy London air is really miserable. Been here all my life but sometimes it still feels worse than other warmer countries I’ve visited during the summer.
Freeze a water bottle and take it out in the morning, so you can hold it against you and slowly sip it as it melts. It’ll take a while to melt so have another non ice bottle on you.
Make sure you have ice lollies, iced water and other cooled drinks on you throughout the day. I do like a tea in hot weather but I am guessing you might not feel the same if you’re not from the UK.
Don’t wear especially baggy clothes because your shirt will end up feeling like a sauna , make sure the fabric is breathable. Keep a mini fan on you, sunscreen on as much as possible, plus a hat. Walk on the side of the road with shade even if it means you have to cross later.
Don’t keep the windows in your accommodation open. I will honestly just lie down on my tiled floor for some respite but it hasn’t gotten hot enough for that yet luckily. If you’re lying in bed make sure to rotate every now and then, so the heat doesn’t built up beneath you too much
Hope you enjoy your visit! London’s green spaces are so beautiful and lively with nature during this season :)

£250 portable air con unit. Bang the pipe out the window and enjoy the freezing cold air blasting into the room. I close my curtains around the pipe/window and the door in the room and it stays cold for ages even when I've switched it off.

Spending the next 4 or 5 days in the pub garden.

How am I dealing with the heat? It’s the perfect time, my wife told me, to mend the render on the garden wall, to repaint it, to jet wash the patio and drive, and to re paint the decking 😂. One job left but fuck me that was hot work earlier today! Thought the slave trade was a thing of the past 😂😓🤣
Oh-reality-come-back@reddit
Wow! Well done 👏 be careful of heat exhaustion and make sure to wear your sunscreen (sorry if I sound like a nagging old codger)

I'm loving it to be honest. Granted I'm in Yorkshire and I've been sat inside finishing my dissertation all day, but got a nice breeze blowing through and it's just pleasant enough to sit in t-shirt and shorts, it's looked brilliant outside.

Ah that sounds lush. Feels like that now that it’s evening.
London feels muggy and extra hot because of all the bodies and buildings, it really does add up to the point where it affects the overall temperature feel.
JulesCT@reddit
Close windows, draw curtains, extend pergolas, close shutters, as applicable, when the temp outside is higher than inside.
Open everything you can when it is is colder outside than in.
Fans on you and fans to push the air through the house.

Put your clothes in the freezer the night before, works a treat

Portable fan everywhere i go!

Badly, in general. But we did take our toddler to the lido today and even though it was crowded the water was blissful.

We keep windows and curtains closed during the day which keeps the house cool. We are lucky though as we are really shaded by trees and hedges so it doesn’t overheat indoors. We also have loads of tree shade in the back garden so it’s comfortable being outside. Windows open during the night. Drink lots of cold water. It’s fine, I like this weather, despite being Scottish (we live in South east England) I’m surviving.

Because of the direction it faces, I can have the windows open in my flat all day and it stays lovely and cool until about 6pm, at which point the sun starts shining in and it becomes hotter than Satan's arsehole until about 5am the next day. Coping method this evening has been mars ice creams - I've eaten three in the last 90 minutes. Fourth one still in the freezer but probably not for much longer.

Absolutely loving it

I sat in my pants (and trainers - no grass, only pebbles) in the back garden, giving the neighbours a glimpse of hotness after the pub beer garden got too hot. Back inside now with the fan set to 3. Oh and moaning. Lots of moaning.

Waitrose is always freezing 🤣 Freeze a bottle of water or squash overnight if you can, take it with you when you leave for the day. It’ll give you a cool pack and also a beautifully cold drink. If you can’t freeze anything, get a water spray, anything evaporating from your skin will help you cool down. Hand held fans add to the evaporation.

Staying outside. But my mum has an air con unit in the living room so I go hang out there if it's unbearable.

I complain. Insert generic mumbling about heat and humidity
InspectionHot6010@reddit
Yes supermarkets best places. And at night time damp a tea towel and put in freezer for 20mins and place on back or feet when you get into bed. Or a cold bath and stay in it until my body and the water the same temperature 🤣
Repulsive_Dig_133@reddit
Ive got a big ceiling fan. Its good, keep the curtains closed too. No problem with this little heatwave so far, but I think I'm going to get an aircon unit.. almost ordered one on friday. Im going to do it.
Cant really deal with a 40+ summer again. came out in hives last time. was having cold baths during the day ( really helped ).
