36m with too many interests and not enough people to talk about them with — let's fix that

Somewhere along the way I realized I'd gotten pretty good at having a full inner life and a pretty thin social one. Working on fixing that.
A little about me: I'm in my 30s, based in Rowlett but around the Plano area often and eventually looking to live and work around there. I have the kind of brain that connects ancient mythology to geopolitical alternate history and then somehow ends up at furniture flipping. I write fiction and poetry, read more than is probably healthy, follow football and sports in general, and have strong opinions about folk music, classic film, and why the details of history matter more than people give them credit for. I also have strong opinions about Sasquatch that I will absolutely tell you about unprompted.
Hobbies I'm already into, looking into, or actively picking up:
- Disc golf, fishing, kayaking, hiking
- Historical European Martial Arts
- Furniture flipping and antiquing
- Collecting things (records, maps, pocketknives - still deciding where to focus)
- Writing, worldbuilding, brainstorming ideas
- Trivia nights, live music, the occasional museum rabbit hole
- Video games and firearms (the classics)
- True crime adjacent history, biblical archaeology, military tactics, cryptids, and whatever rabbit hole opened up this week (the fun dinner party topics)
I'm an ambivert, which means I'm genuinely good company but also completely fine sitting quietly at a bar/cafe with a good beer/cocktail/tea/coffee and not saying anything for twenty minutes. I'm told this is either very comfortable or very unsettling depending on the person. I'm also someone who values deep conversation and genuinely enjoys sharing recommendations: books, music, shows, films, whatever's worth your time. That kind of easy back and forth is honestly half of what I'm looking for.
I'm also in the middle of intentionally building a more active lifestyle: getting outside more, picking up things that keep me moving without making me miserable. If you're on a similar path or just want someone to drag you off the couch on a Saturday morning, that works too. I am down 75lbs since Halloween of 2025, and have been doing it mainly through diet alone and I think it's time to ease my way back into fitness.
Not looking for anything specific, just putting myself out there to see if there are people in the area who want to grab a drink, ramble about odd topics, argue about something interesting, or find out what HEMA is actually about.
Drop a comment or DM if any of this sounds like your frequency.

Me! I'm looking for an early morning walking buddy. I just started getting back into health as well. Hopefully start lifting soon. We can talk about books, video games, and writing. I've always wanted to learn to fish. DT Plano area. There's some nice coffee shops here 👌

DT Plano isn’t too far from me, weekday mornings are kinda tough as I start work at 7am right now but I’m open for the weekends and am looking to make Saturdays my weekly adventure day where I get out and do something active
Acrobatic_Art6235@reddit
Of course! Weekends are the best times to explore. Welll I usually frequent Lemma Coffee to read. I heard Katy Trail is the place to be active, but haven't gone yet.

I'll have to stop by

I think I looked at Lemma Coffee this morning when I was looking at possibly going out and getting some then reading. But I ended up working on some life goals stuff that lead to this post. I haven't been on the Katy Trail yet but have been wanting to try it out

It's pretty great, don't pass it up. We'll it looks like you have plans for next weekend!

Bibliobar in downtown Plano has at least one, maybe multiple writing groups. So does the Plano library system, and I don’t believe you need a card for it. My favorite trivia spot is civil pour in Richardson on Thursday nights, and you’ll encounter a lot of regulars.

Thank you so much! I have been wanting to check out Bibliobar for a few weeks now!

Always down to throw discs.
Also have plenty of weird hobbies.
BuffaloHead6711@reddit (OP)
Fair warning, disc golf is one of the things I haven't done before and am a complete newbie with it

Okay I can teach. I'm also into maps, furniture, fishing, packrafting, sailing, guns, reloading, welding, etc etc. All the things. So neither of us is a one trick pony
BuffaloHead6711@reddit (OP)
Welding is something I’ve had a curiosity about but have never really put the time or effort towards learning about it. I got that yearning to learn to blacksmith like I’d assume many guys that share some of my interests do.

I am formally educated as a geologist and one of my best teachers was a journeyman blacksmith before his PhD in geology.
Anyway.
His swords look ground down like a knife, as in, perfect blade etc. but they are hammered and purely blacksmithed.
I just sold my mig gas tank, but I have an argon tank, mig, tig, stick, flux core, plasma cutter, etc. I sold my oxy acetylene, but anyway. Just shoot me a text and come hang. Bring beer or whiskey. If you don't drink then don't do that

Hey man! 40m here always looking for more people to throw the discs with! Plus it sounds like we could have some great conversations about the, "what if's" of history while we're fishing out our discs from the creek!
ScrubWay@reddit
I'll join, 38m and I've been throwing disc's into waterways for years now.

Sounds good man! Like I said, I have zero knowledge of it just that I have been told that it's something many people think I would like, so I am up to trying it out.

Hey right on. A lot of my same interests in there, I'm in Rowlett as well.
