Why do we resist meeting people when we feel so lonely?

Hi. We live in a lonely world and currently in a loneliness epidemic. I admit it, at times I feel lonely. What I crave is a big pile of mates. However when someone organizes a meet up, I can't be bothered and would rather sit and read a book. Loads of people feel the same. Why is this?
