What kind of drone is that?

Posted by VladimirsGs@reddit | aviation | View on Reddit | 46 comments

The Sudanese Air Force likely shot it down from Ethiopia. Some reports say that it was an Akinci drone, but it was equipped with Pritt and Whitney engines not AI-450C. https://x.com/ibnkhattab97/status/2058123783983034461?s=46 https://x.com/sudan\_tweet/status/2058094126717915177?s=46

Well that’s definitely a PT6

Interesting the P&W emblem is on the engines even on drones. I know those go missing a lot during aircraft builds by mechanics.

I can't imagine an engine designer/builder likes having their logos on aircraft that are engaged in anything military.

Spart1337@reddit

The US military is often their largest customer so I'm sure they're just fine with it.

It’s not like it’s a secret who builds the engines for which aircraft. The military is the primary money maker for most aerospace companies. They absolutely want their name on their products.

I think theft is what they were getting at. Unfortunately a lot of Americans are generally pro-war, and manual professions tend to attract a higher proportion of that type. I doubt many of them lose sleep over it

What the hell are you talking about? You think a company that specifically designs high thrust jet engines doesn’t want to be associated with the military? Who the fuck do you think is buying fighter engines?
View on Reddit #86754816

Hank_moody71@reddit

It’s a $1.5m turbine engine. They definitely don’t just go missing
View on Reddit #86725221

1.5M, usd? I'll take 10 for that price.

The emblem. Not the engine.

I wouldn't say that. Was a simple misread. Happens to us all. Once you're negative though groupthink takes over and people just push the dopamine button

Definitely. They just get a write-up saying "endine emblem broken removed no fod". /s

SpiritGuyd@reddit

Haha they definitely do. This looks like a pretty basic emblem though, may like a metal sticker. Not like the coveted, often stolen thick enamel coin style emblem.

they’re surprisingly difficult to peel off, they’re actually made of aluminum and the bonding is usually pretty decent so a screwdriver is needed. so i’ve heard.
View on Reddit #86735377

flightwatcher45@reddit

The engines I'm familiar with they remove the plate they're bonded to lol.

Akinci downed another Akinci few weeks ago. That wreck with P&W engine could belongs to that but they may have released the photos today. IR signature doesn’t look like Akinci at all. My bet it’s a L-17, not a drone. Pilot may become unconscious after that hit hence couldn’t eject.

If the wreckage does not belong to the aircraft I would say CH-6

Turbofans on CH-6 sits above tails. It’s hard to judge from IR but these look like they sit at the middle of the fuselage. Maybe a different drone but I don’t think it’s a CH-6.

Didn’t understand what happened in the video. Can anyone explain?

AmbitiousEconomics@reddit

Black column of smoke is from the missile, you see the missile separate from the booster and impact right near the wing root. The missile just looks like a bright point.
View on Reddit #86733990

Jazzlike_Climate4189@reddit

Close, but it doesn’t separate from any booster. It’s all 1 piece.
View on Reddit #86737675

Zrva_V3@reddit

I think it does. It's Roketsan's Eren missile. Seems to be using a booster. https://turdef.com/article/idef25-roketsan-unveils-eren-multirole-loitering-munition

Definitely a PW PT6 Engine. Though the video is weird, does not look like Akinci drone to me at all.
View on Reddit #86719669

Weak_Tangerine_6316@reddit

IR looks funky. Low resolution makes wings look thicker. Huge blobs of heat off the engines make them look bigger/closer together.
View on Reddit #86760660

IcyTable6584@reddit

I get that but what’s the black column of smoke and also didn’t see any SAM hitting it…just the camera arcing over the drone and it falls out of the sky…
View on Reddit #86723704

TurnoverMysterious64@reddit

You can see the missile continue on and hit the aircraft. Not sure but maybe the missile separate from some sort of booster stage, and it’s that booster stage that we see generating the plume and arcing past the aircraft without hitting it.
View on Reddit #86727263

Jazzlike_Climate4189@reddit

All air to air missiles only burn their rocket for 4-5 seconds, then coasts to target while maneuvering.
View on Reddit #86737627

TurnoverMysterious64@reddit

That’s not even remotely true. For example, all BVR A2A missiles will burn for much longer than a few seconds. The rocket motors often use a boost-sustainer configuration (e.g. the AMRAAM), which is exactly what it sounds like and burns for quite a bit longer than a few seconds.
View on Reddit #86744297

CotswoldP@reddit

The AMRAAM burns for about 6-8 seconds, depending on ambient pressure. That is true for most missiles. They boost to very high altitude, then glide, converting the altitude to smash. That's why Meteor is so unusual, it uses a ramjet and so burns for far longer, maintaining its speed, though it doesn't initially get as fast as AMRAAM.
View on Reddit #86747284

gefahr@reddit

Not true of newer ones right? Don't some have second stages now? There's a whole class of beyond-visual-range that must burn longer than that (or again).

If not Akinci then possibly Piaggio P.1HH HammerHead - I know UAE air force uses them and they could have been provided to Sudanese enemies if not operated by the UAE itself
