Puzzleheaded-Hat5803@reddit
Wtf state do yku live in that out of 2200 you only pay 200 in taxes.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I set up my w2 where I only pay 50% tax then pay the rest that I owe end of year
Puzzleheaded-Hat5803@reddit
Why
Chewbacca_Holmes@reddit
Your income tax refund at the end of the year represents an interest-free loan that you issued to the federal government. It was your money that whole time. You just didn’t get access to it until the IRS returned it to you.
As long as OP has the fiscal discipline to put what he’ll owe into a savings account or something where it’s accruing interest until next April, he’s money ahead.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Exactly I put my money in a high yield savings account and let it grow and pay what I owe at end of year
lovs2build1@reddit
That is smart and best thing to do, all the goverment does with your money is make another weapon, been doing this for 40 years.
Top-Raspberry-2516@reddit
How exactly can you do that? What do you put for your w2
highwayher0@reddit
Its really none of your business how he handles his taxes. Though I do find his methods odd. Some people just prefer to have ease of mind knowing they are going to have a bill and the intrest it would have accrued over the year isn't going to make or brake your investment portfolio.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I’m not working hard to give the government half of my check
HeywoodJaBlowMe123@reddit
You’re just working hard to give the government the other 50% of 52 weeks at the end of the year? Lol.
Walk me through your thought process.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I would’ve got taxed $558 on this check with regular taxes but I put less withholding when I did my w4 with my job I usually only owe $6500-7500 at end of year
unloader86@reddit
...
You realize this is the exact same thing but you have to make a fat payment in April instead?
What?! 😂
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
My strategy is stability first, then aggressive investing after my emergency fund is complete
unloader86@reddit
Yeah...
Jxylin@reddit
Me when I only read 1/20 comments but still reply like a brain dead monkey
IntergalacticBrewski@reddit
If you give them the money throughout the year it’s an interest free loan to the government which is whack. Now, I don’t have the mental fortitude or organizational skills to do this, but it makes sense. You can be distributed this money, invest/spend it at your choice and then return an amount you would have anyway with a few bucks in your pocket if done right.
Again, I can’t do this, but for those that can it’s a smart play.
unloader86@reddit
If you are that concerned about it, you'd use the calculations provided by the IRS to withhold close to the exact amount. That way you don't get a refund or have to owe...
Y'all being dead ass right now or all you trolling me? lol The fuck?
IntergalacticBrewski@reddit
lol no brother I agree. Yes it’s easy, yes the resources are there.. I just don’t do it nor will I. No logical reason just Yano, fuck that. But it could work if you wanted like you said
Commercial_Look_27@reddit
Yea technically you could get a consistent 5-8% on the money throughout the year if invested in the market, same could be said about vacation pay ect
IntergalacticBrewski@reddit
Exactly, so yeah if you’re doing it right this is a smart play but unfortunately I’m just not that dude. Nor am I a trucker so idk how I’m even here. I did work for TQL for a while, apologies in advance if I ever called you 30 times to book a load $2/mile below market.
WallaWallaby011@reddit
He just needs to delete this post now 😭🤣😂
Throwaway97583@reddit
Fwiw this amount is considerably more than the underpayment threshold and, if caught, will subject you to a penalty of about 6 to 8% on the amount owed.
https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc306
CoWood0331@reddit
They don’t get it. These people are the type of people to not work overtime because they will “pay more taxes”
Sticcster@reddit
Your money is not building interest while the IRS collects it all year long. If you claim 1 on your W2 they will take less taxes out. With the extra money you will be earning, if you are disciplined you can take the extra money that you earned and deposit it into a high yield savings account each week so that it accrues interest. Once it's time to file TAXES and you owe the IRS, you pay them your dues and the money that was in the savings account accruing interest will be worth potentially a few hundred dollars more than if you waited for the IRS to mail you a return. This is a disaster waiting to happen for the average person though, because not everybody is capable of saving their money evidently.
AroundGoesThe18@reddit
Why give your government an interest free loan? Just out what you owe in savings until April, then pay the exact amount you owe - meanwhile youre earning interest on that money instead of letting the government use it for free.
MissYouDesertRat@reddit
People on this sub wonder why people take these 1099 jobs, so many people think like OP its astounding.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Read what I said below… my plan is to build my emergency fund then max out my 401k and Roth ira my focus is stability first then long-term wealth building my savings sit in a high yield savings account so my money still grows in my savings account, not just sitting and collecting dust once my emergency funds is where I want it to be then I’ll invest heavily, I won’t be comfortable investing heavy until I meet my savings account goal, anything can happen and I want to be prepared for that, I do 1 thing at a time to maximize
MissYouDesertRat@reddit
Lieing on your taxes to build your savings is wild bruh you do you though.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I’m not gonna argue with people on Reddit I explained my plan below, my plan is not the same as your plan, everyone has different plans and goals I do 1 thing at a time that’s just me
MRLNRomeroMatt@reddit
If you pay at tax time, aren't you doing just that though?
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I get to take home more money 🤷♂️
Sparks_PC_Building@reddit
As long as you are investing what you’d otherwise be paying in taxes, you arent getting any benefit. Especially if you still owe money even paying them in full.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I maximize one financial target at a time because it keeps me focused and disciplined, I’m a sequential goal person. I prefer fully completing one financial objective before heavily funding the next one. Right now my focus is building a $35k emergency fund, then I’ll pivot to maxing my Roth IRA and index funds
daemonescanem@reddit
Uk you lower your taxable income by maxing your 401k right?
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
They match 4 percent I guess I’ll increase it
daemonescanem@reddit
If your wanting to save, max it to 10% which is legal limit for 401k.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yes my plan is to build my savings then max out my 401k and max out my Roth IRA that’s in my plan after reaching my savings fund
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yes I’ll increase my 401k to $300 a week now on top of what the company matches
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yes I’m very good a budgeting I only spend $200 a week
Deodorized@reddit
Which you will then have to pay at the end of the year.
You should be aiming for $0 due/owed at the end of the year, not whatever this logic is.
Thepopethroway@reddit
If it is invested correctly and he is lucky enough to avoid downturns, he will be receiving compound interest on that money in that time, making it a better deal for him.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yep my money sits in a high yield savings account to let it grow then I pay my tax end of year
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I’m building financial stability first with my emergency fund . After that, my plan is to aggressively max my Roth IRA and 401(k). I prefer completing one financial goal at a time instead of splitting my focus on 3 things at once
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I did that and I always owed anyway
Deodorized@reddit
You did it wrong and owed money because you did it wrong.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I’m good on budgeting money and I barely spend money so the $6500-7500 is a drop in a bucket if I wasn’t financially responsible I wouldn’t be able to pay it at end of year but I am financially responsible and save and I don’t eat out and I pack my own lunches and set a budget each week the 6500-7500 is nothing compared to what I’m making
Deodorized@reddit
Explain the lack of 401k contribution and other benefits then.
This a new job?
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I didn’t forget about 401k I’m setting up my emergency fund and saving for my son that’s due in October then I’ll max out my 401k once I get my goal of 6 months emergency funds I do 1 thing at a time everyone do everything differently once my emergency fun is maxed out then I’ll max out my 401k
Deodorized@reddit
Are you contributing to employer match right now? It doesn't look like there are any deductions.
You're leaving free money on the table if you aren't.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I just explained to you I do 1 thing at a time I’m building my savings account for emergencies and having a son in October, I have a plan set in place already I’ll be set once retirement Comes I like to do 1 thing at a time to give my full focus on 1 thing at a time
Deodorized@reddit
Dumb and stubborn is a very unfortunate combination.
You're doing all of this in an incredibly inefficient manner and you're leaving A LOT on the table, but I'm sure at 23 you know WAY better than everybody else.
You don't know the opportunity you have right now, and by the time you figure it out, that opportunity is going to be gone.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I know all about Roth IRA, index funds I’m doing 1 thing at a time you’re failing to realize that, I don’t wanna invest until I have at least 6 months emergency funds in my account that’s when I’ll feel comfortable investing until all my income into index funds I like to give my full attention to 1 thing at a time everyone do things differently I’m not dumb for having my own plan I understand investing early matters. I’m just choosing to build a stronger emergency fund first so unexpected expenses don’t force me into debt or selling investments, I’m not dumb for doing it differently then everyone else at the end of the day I’ll have a retirement and Roth IRA like I said I’m not dumb for doing it differently, everyone does things differently I’m not ignoring 401k or Roth IRA I will invest
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I’ll have a nice retirement once I get to my emergency funds goal I’ll invest in the index fund I didn’t forget about 401k I told you my plan, I have a plan in place I don’t wanna invest until I get comfortable with my emergency fund I should hit my emergency funds goal in September then I’ll invest heavily I don’t feel comfortable investing until I get comfortable with emergency funds I keep telling you I didn’t forget about retirement I’m doing 1 thing at a time, I will invest when I get comfortable with the funds I plan to buy lots of stocks in the index funds but I’m building savings first so I can invest.
Cardinal_350@reddit
But you aren't haha. You still owe the damn money to the Government
OrangeSpartan@reddit
Bro has negative IQ
HeywoodJaBlowMe123@reddit
“I’m not working hard to give the government half my check”
I love truck drivers sometimes.
FLcbdfarmer@reddit
He's lending the government less money throughout the year which decreases thier consistent full time spending capitol. If everyone did that they MIGHT be more careful with the budget. But I doubt it 😆
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Exactly
Throwaway97583@reddit
About that...the reason people dont do this is because it's not allowed and puts you at risk of owing up to 8% of the underpayment amount. You have to pay at least 90% of your tax liability throughout the year or 100% of the year's prior amount to be in the clear.
https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc306
Puzzleheaded-Hat5803@reddit
Sp youre cheating your taxes. Nice.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yea but when I wasn’t doing that, they took a lot of money and I always owed anyway
LaZorChicKen04@reddit
Lmao
Chewbacca_Holmes@reddit
Breaks down to about $28.477 per hour with overtime. I make a little more than that ($32/hr), but I haul fuel so it’s all hazmat all night long.
merpinit@reddit
Guys stop downvoting him he’s allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants with his money lol
MissYouDesertRat@reddit
Yeah! Even fraud!
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
How am I committing fraud? I pay the taxes at end of year why does it matter to you, at the end of the day my taxes get paid
12darrenk@reddit
How much did you have to pay in penalties for not paying enough in before filing your taxes? Having to pay in some with your taxes is fine, but from the amounts you are giving, you are very likely to be paying penalties above and beyond what you would owe originally.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I only go exempt 6 months a year but I don’t have to go exempt anymore now I’ll be claiming head of household when my baby gets here in October
12darrenk@reddit
Gotcha. It's not a terrible idea, but from the way you were explaining it to others it made it seem like you were just pushing off almost all of the payment until tax filing.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
My mom pay $150-200 less on taxes claiming my sister each week on her taxes
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yep next month I’ll be switching back to normal taxes but head of household since baby will be born before October 31st deadline to claim, child should come end of September to early October so I’ll be claiming head of household and I’ll get to take home $14-1500 after taxes a week
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Depends if I do overtime that Saturday without overtime it’s $1800 a week I can make but with overtime I get to $2200 a week that would’ve put me at $1600 take home with head of household without exempt and $1400 if I make $1800 that week since I’ll be claiming my child on my w2 to pay less taxes then vs a single which get more taxes taken out
Redsoxdragon@reddit
Omfg........that's the most retarded short sighted shit I've read all week.
Bro, just pay your proper taxes, you'll never know when you're gonna be short on cash for that fat bill. Even the joker knew not to fuck around with the irs.
daemonescanem@reddit
He is claiming 10 on W4. Told me he does this 6 months out of the year. Seems like he thinks he can game the IRS to his advantage. He is the one taking the risks.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Those 6 months I can stack up my savings then switch back and when I claim my child as a dependent and my gf I can break even or pay less because 6 months is not a whole year going exempt as head of household
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Going exempt for 6 months is relatively safe when claiming head of household and claiming 2 dependents my mom does it and she never owes money or breaks even she actually gets money back, singles with no kids don’t get tax breaks or tax credits
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I claim my son as a dependent and my gf as dependent I won’t owe as much exempt for 6 months as if I did whole year that’s a different story
ZZach55@reddit
if you think 29.6 an hour for being the backbone of this country and working overtime is fair, you do you.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Let me guess “ I make $3500 a week” stop being a dick and bringing other truckers down, I make enough to save money and pay the bills and not struggle
LoopDoGG79@reddit
I suppose this is for one week?
Desperate_Initial_88@reddit
lol I bring home 2000 at 60 hours and I’m home every day
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
That’s 5 hours less than I work And I am home everyday local as well not Otr anymore
jaireworld@reddit
No matter how much you make and how little you actually work and how easy the job is. There is always gonna be someone on here bragging about how they make double working half the hours and their job is twice as easy to do.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
No matter how much you make they’ll always be another trucker “ that’s not enough “ “ I make more then that” no matter if you feel like you’re making good money they’ll always be another trucker to bring another trucker down this is plenty of money for me, I live below my means, I’m not like everyone else buying expensive cars, houses i set up a budget and save
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yep everyone got different salaries as long as it’s enough for you to save and pay your bills that’s all that matters
AdharasStillThere@reddit
It amazes me that people want to spend 65 hours a week sitting in a truck, and even more that they consider 2K to be a fair trade for doing-so.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
$2k a week is more then enough for me 🤷♂️
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Why is everyone worried about my taxes? Worry about your own I’m disciplined and pay my taxes so it shouldn’t Matter
Naive-Work209@reddit
YOU asked if this was good? Now you’re mad because people are saying it’s not?
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
It’s enough money for me to have enough to save and pay my bills not struggle 🤷♂️ I was making $1200 every 2 weeks before I got into trucking that’s a huge increase for me, it may not be enough for you, but it’s enough for me, it’s not about what you make it’s about what you save $1900 a week where I live is amazing
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I’m not getting upset….
MuphDiesel@reddit
$30/hr. Good job
thedailyworkwr@reddit
I make around 6k a week after taxes hauling dry freight. Round trip, home every night, less than 500 miles. Super trucking ain't easy
NNNap@reddit
I make around +$2.6k with Class C weekly with that amount of hours in Cali! Not worth it CDL tho 🤷🏽♂️
TremontExpress@reddit
Yeah man, where's the insurance? Retirement?
TonyTrucking@reddit
Is this local job in AZ? Help a brother out
trucksarekewl@reddit
Idk who started this trend up again but, curse you whoever you are lol
MissYouDesertRat@reddit
This sub is always a pissing contest.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I don’t understand why everyone is worried about my taxes and not their own why does it matter how I pay my taxes? I’m very well disciplined with saving money people should worry about their own taxes not mine
daemonescanem@reddit
Because it misrepresents actual take home pay.
Reality is we all pay taxes, you have other deductions for Healthcare, flex spending accounts, 401k.
If your grossing $2200 in 65 hr thats really not very good btw. If it was $2200 in 36 to 40 hrs thats more representative of a good local jpb.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
This job is so easy sometimes the places I go to take 5 hours to load/unload I do local in a sleeper so I either take a nap or relax and still get paid for it
No_Lake_7445@reddit
Where u work at?
daemonescanem@reddit
Im a load pay guy. Hourly just wastes HOS in my experience.
Years ago I had a debate with a coworker. He loved it when he went to a customer and got 5 to 7 hrs of delay pay waiting. He called that "free money". I asked him how much he made driving in 1 hr driving down the road? At the time it was like $27 per hour, our delay pay was $16 per hour. So I asked which number was bigger? $27 driving vs $16 sitting? Math dont lie.
For me currently $22 per hr delay pay, but $37 to $119 per hr driving road the road. The $119 is our flat rate runs within the city, and take less than hr to run each one.
Strife3dx@reddit
If its hourly. Its flat hourly rate all day and overtime otherwise dont work for that company is my rule
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Plus with my son coming in October im trying to save as much as possible, raising a kid isn’t cheap and I wanna be prepared for that, my son is very important to me and I want to make sure he has everything he’ll need that’s why I’m saving aggressively
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I just pay my taxes and end of year, I still pay it not sure why everyone is attacking me when it still gets paid
Salt-Fee-9543@reddit
And how much do you save per week to pay those taxes? I’m sure that paycheck is a lot less after you take money out to save for taxes at the end of year. Quite honestly your paycheck isn’t that impressive tbh, I do local hazmat, 40hrs week and bring home $1100 after taxes, insurance, 401k, etc.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
My mom drive a bus and she file exempt whole year with 2 kids as dependents and head of household and she gets money back 🤷♂️
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
$1100 a week wouldn’t do many any good that’s why I work more hours
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I only go exempt 6 months a year not the whole year I won’t owe as much claiming head of household and add my son as a dependent and I also add my gf as a dependent
daemonescanem@reddit
It has its risks. Safer to pay exactly what you owe each pay period, while reducing your taxable income.
Dont forget Roth IRA is post tax, an company offering 401k is pre tax.
nanneryeeter@reddit
How is one safer? It's all the same in the end.
daemonescanem@reddit
Trucking isnt known for its consistency in earnings.
So if one isnt having enough taxes taken out when times are good, if and when bad times happen, and life happens, that money set back for taxes can be easily used up.
Safer to pay the adequate amount throughout the year vs claiming 10 for 6 months of the year and banking the that extra.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I only go exempt 6 months a year but after this year I won’t be doing that, I can just claim my son on my taxes as head of household to get tax credits and pay less taxes then someone without kids paying $700 out their checks a week at least I’ll get to pay less taxes 🤷♂️
daemonescanem@reddit
Dont forget we dont know how BBB will exactly impact working class taxes for 26 yet, only the rich got tax cuts.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
My mom pays way less taxes she claims both of my sisters as head of household
daemonescanem@reddit
Look there is no "gaming" your taxes. I get what your tying to do.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
So I have a plan not sure why everyone is attacking me for my plan
daemonescanem@reddit
It carries risks that most people want to avoid. Things go wrong and money runs short and taxes cant be wished a way or ignored.
Those are your risks.. I understand both sides of it.
When I had a large tax bill one year, it was physically painful to go to bank and get a cashiers check for 18k.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I only do it 6 months a year not the whole year, I won’t. Be claiming exempt anymore I’ll just file head of household which will lower my federal taxes so I can take home more money then vs someone without kids getting taxes more
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
401k and Roth are in my plan, I’m building my savings emergency fund I’m almost at my goal then I’ll max out my 401k and Roth ira I’m almost close to savings goal by September I’ll reach my goal then I’ll max out my 401k and Roth ira and invest in the index fund s&p
daemonescanem@reddit
Max out 401k but simply invest the rest. Roth IRA will tie it up and not have as easy of access to it.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Rn I’m creating a big cash cushion, emergencies can happen and can be very expensive that’s why I’m maximizing my emergency funds so I can be prepared it’s all in my high yield savings account collection interest
TheFightingQuaker@reddit
Taxes owed are not part of an emergency fund. Of you use them to not pay taxes, how are the taxes getting paid?
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I set aside money for that
Babnno@reddit
He just spelled it out. If you can’t understand that, then you’re choosing to be ignorant
SlareLukuski@reddit
I mean this good pay, but you arent gonna be able to save your way to retirement. Flex your 401k balance instead.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I will have a retirement I’m building my savings first then max out my 401k I’m not gonna keep answering and explaining my plan look at the comments below I explained my plan
Longway23544@reddit (OP)

Frito_Penndejo@reddit
What entry level job is paying $3500 a week? Generally curious.
Physics-Pool@reddit
You got 10 dependents? How are you only paying 13% in taxes on $2200
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I file exempt. For 6 months then switch back to normal, I won’t owe as much claiming my son and my gf as an dependent
Physics-Pool@reddit
Have you done this method before? Like 2025? Because 6 months exempt even as HOH and a couple dependents isn't gonna fully makeup for half the year exempt...
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Look it up Claiming a child lowers your tax bill mainly in two ways: credits and deductions
Physics-Pool@reddit
I am very familiar with the tax code...what Im saying is at that income level the HOH standard deduction +child tax credits is not gonna be enough to cover 6 months of exempted paychecks. Im just trying to help. If this is your first time doing this I think you should check with a tax guy to make sure...writing a check to the Fed for 5 grand at the end of the year is NOT fun...I know this from experience.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
My mom brings home 150-200 more then what a single with no kids or dependents or hoh that helps lower tax burden she claims 2 dependents as well not saying it’ll eliminate taxes but it’ll lower your tax burden with dependents and hoh
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
If you’re well disciplined 6 months exempt wouldn’t be bad if you dependents and a child to claim which will lower what’s owed or break even it allows you to get a head start on saving I’m well disciplined I set a budget each week and strictly stick to it, singles with no kids get taxed way more then someone with a child or dependent not saying it’ll eliminate it but, claiming hoh and my child will lower my tax burden and I can bring home more money then singles with no dependents that’s the advantage I have over singles no dependents and no hoh
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Going exempt I can save $1400 a week for 6 months thats $36,000 I can save in 6 months claiming hoh and claiming my child I’m not saying I won’t owe but for 6 months but it’ll be less owed with a child if I went exempt whole year that’s a different story vs me only bringing home $1400 a week those 6 months and only saving $1000, going exempt for 6 months let’s me save $1400–1500 a week and I’ll have $36,000 after those 6 months vs 24k I don’t do it whole year, plus this is my last year doing exempt for 6 months, since Im having a child that I can claim and hoh it’ll reduce my taxes but won’t eliminate it but I’ll pay less then someone with no kids or dependents and I’ll still have more take home vs someone single and no dependents they take more out your check with no dependents or hoh
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
$270 federal taxes each week for 6 months is 6480 without kids but I’ll pay less then that with claiming hoh and claiming my son my w2 and my gf as a dependent
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I still pay states taxes I’m not exempt on that $6500 times 2 is $13000 plus my states. Taxes they take out $100 a week that’s another $5200 and they take money from social security that’s $18,000 total in taxes a year how much do you expect I pay? $18,000 in taxes a year is more then enough you’re forgetting the part where I only go exempt on federal taxes not state and other taxes
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
It’s not my first time doing this, I been doing this for 3 years
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I won’t owe as much going 6 months exempt as I would for a year I done it before last year I only owed $6500 going exempt for 6 months I didn’t have any kids at the time now that I have a kid coming before October 31st deadline and now I can claim head of household I won’t owe $6500 at end of year it’ll be less claiming a kid as a dependent and my gf as a dependent
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
My mom does it and is perfectly fine
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
When I switch back I’ll still be paying taxes but not as much as singles with no kids or dependents or no head of household
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Vs singles with no dependents don’t get take breaks because their are not head of household or don’t have a child
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Plus when I switch back to normal I’ll still get less taxes taken out claiming head of household and claiming 2 dependents
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Look it up, claiming head of household and claiming son and gf as dependents I won’t owe much only going exempt 6 months if I did whole year that’s a different story
Saskatchemoose@reddit
Not bad not bad
costanzas_Dad@reddit
It blows my mind to see only 10% taken for taxes. I lose about 30%. However I'm in Canada.
thisplanetisstresful@reddit
Weekly or bi
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Weekly pay
thisplanetisstresful@reddit
Thats insane how much is that a hour what is that fuel haul thats insane 1900 a week takehome
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yes it’s more take home because I go exempt 6 months out the year then switch back to regular I’m also claiming my son as dependent to get less taxes out my check
thisplanetisstresful@reddit
What company is that lol like godam what like fuel haul or something dang
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Small company In Chicago
Coupdetout@reddit

Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Nope it’s a target dedicated account home daily it’s a very small company I work for farthest I’ll go is Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa and Indiana and back home everyday but I mainly stay in Illinois I’m home everyday
Aether-Black-9@reddit
Why do y'all pay taxes?? I don't understand it.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I don’t understand why everyone is worried about my taxes and not their own why does it matter how I pay my taxes? I’m very well disciplined with saving money
Aether-Black-9@reddit
In most situations, I wouldn't give af. However, in this case, It's also a collective effort... Some slaves aren't aware that they're just that.
GainMoreWeight@reddit
.
GainMoreWeight@reddit
Because they are on W2 instead of 1099. Can't write off much.
WeAreOnlyPawns@reddit
Yep. Your making more money then my guys hauling locally. We only work 4 days a week though.
My guys average 900-1100 depending on how long the line is at the bulk tank plants. At 50-56 hours. 14 hr shifts.
Corkymon87@reddit
My check this week was $2,678.01 (gross) for 58 hours and its local, home every night. So yeah 🤷🏼
wizoneaia@reddit
65 hours ? No thanks
mason2393@reddit
This. It would have to be a ridiculous amount of money to work 65 hours in a week.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I don’t have to do 65 hours I choose to, I can do 50-55 hours but I choose not to, and I ask my job to put me on schedule for more hours
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I like doing overtime 🤷♂️
Captain-Durbs@reddit
I wish my taxes were that low
EuphoricLoss1690@reddit
God dam only 289$ in tac? Where are you located?
MomSpaget420@reddit
I was making 1600 doing 40 hour weeks at a gas station. Dunno that sitting behind a truck all day would be worth it for only a few hundred more.
Extreme-You6235@reddit
Terrible for 65 hours
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I don’t have to work 65 hours I choose too I can do 50-55 but I like doing overtime I don’t have to work 65 if I don’t want too
Historical_Pea4942@reddit
You shouldn’t have to work 65 hours to make this much as a trucker.. The trucking industry really is dog 💩.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I don’t have to work 65 house I choose too, I’m living comfortably and able to save money and pay my bills 🤷♂️
Historical_Pea4942@reddit
That’s all that matters then.
Imjusta_pug@reddit
How are you paying so little in taxes? I’m married with a kid, and I still claim 0 and single because I make too much money and end up owing lol
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
My. Mom file exempt all year long and claim 2 kids and always get money back 🤷♂️
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I claim my son as a depend and I claim my gf as a dependent I only go exempt 6 months a year and I don’t be owing as much
jmzstl@reddit
If you don’t mind working that many hours and if that amount of money works for your situation, then that’s great.
Personally, as someone who’s been driving for 8 years, I aim to make quite a bit more than ~$28/hr. But everyone has different situations (families, bills, cost of living, retirement goals, etc).
haydukelives56@reddit
i’m currently in a similar boat as OP, working about 65 hours/week and making $27.50. I have been driving for 8 years, only 3 companies during that time, and have no violations or tickets other than a little ding at an airport parking lot where I backed over a temporary sign and the attendant insisted on calling the cops. where are all these companies that are paying more than $28/hour? I currently haul fuel but feel like I’m reaching the ceiling here, and would love being pointed in the right direction. Because this many hours a week isn’t ideal or sustainable and it feels like I’m working way below the pay grade of the value I bring to the table
jmzstl@reddit
I’ll pm you because for me it’s more location based than anything else.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
As long as it’s enough to pay your bills and have extra money that’s all that matters
Thepopethroway@reddit
LTL linehaul
haydukelives56@reddit
yeah, i was doing that for a fedex contractor but as you know, that’s the lowest bidder type thing. i tried to get on with aaa cooper doing ltl but they wouldn’t return my calls after submitting all my apps on intelliapp. might be a seniority thing, who knows
Thepopethroway@reddit
Where do you live that fuel only pays $28/hr, btw? Don't say Florida.
haydukelives56@reddit
saint petersburg/tampa, florida🥲🙃trust me i know it’s shit pay for fuel down here in florida. but my partner lives here, so i moved here, and now here i am
spce-isthe-plce@reddit
Check out FedEx Express RTD. They have a hub in Tampa. Top out is right at $35 rn. Not sure what they would start you at, but worth looking into.. super easy job.
Thepopethroway@reddit
Knew it. Florida has pretty bad wages in general. Fuel hauling in LCOL Midwest is at $40/hr for example. Food service might be a decent bet but it's huge wear and tear on the body. Florida just doesn't pay drivers much.
haydukelives56@reddit
haha you called it - and yes, i’ve heard about even up in pennsylvania and other spots up north that pay in the $40’s. i actually deliver to a sysco warehouse and i talk to those guys and know how bad it can get - but fleet fueling, especially this many trucks, is also a bit rough on the body. it’s good for health because i’m walking, on average, 25,000 steps/day, but tough on feet, hands, and back from dragging a heavy hose, squeezing a nozzle hundreds of times in an evening, and walking on concrete/asphalt for hours and hours at a time. it’s helping me clear some debts i’ve been held hostage by for far too long, but a change will definitely need to occur once that is taken care of and i have some money in the bank.
haydukelives56@reddit
and to add insult to injury, i’m one of the top earners here for my role. we fleet fuel, so it’s a lot of physical labor, in/out of the truck, dragging hoses to individually fuel other fleet tractors. they started me as well as most other guys at $26/hour
WallaWallaby011@reddit
$28/hr hauling FUEL!?😱
Here I am earning $28/hr as a shuttle driver! Omg
haydukelives56@reddit
dude i’m saying! i used to do linehaul for fedex, shuttling between hubs and that was .55/mile, about 2,600 miles a week, but 6x a week. the schedule was great though, only about 9 hours/shift, so i was able to go to community college for an associates and hold down another job. but with this job being paid OT, it’s the most i’ve ever made, but at 65/70 hours/week, there’s no time for basically anything else so im feeling stuck
WallaWallaby011@reddit
Yeah the most I ever work is 51 hours.. I’m out when the second shift warehouse crew leaves. At least I’m not getting underpaid as a woman… that’s good to know at least lol
haydukelives56@reddit
heck yeah, happy for you!! do you think there’s room for raises in that role? i love driving but i think i might try my hand at nursing, it seems like there are better schedules and culture as well as room for growth in that industry. my partner also works in medicine so it seems like it makes sense to move that way, at least if im unable to find a better paying job in driving
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Just wanna make sure I have a decent emergency funds, anything can happen and I wanna make sure I’m prepared especially with a child on the way, my goal is to have at least 35k in my emergency funds especially with a child then I’ll invest I’m doing 1 thing at a time I’ll have a nice retirement
FarCry_98@reddit
You can do both. At least you have a plan though. The 401k is something you can do now though. Don’t leave the company’s money on the table, take it.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I don’t understand why everyone is worried about my taxes and not their own? why does it matter how I pay my taxes? I’m very well disciplined with saving money and my taxes get paid end of year, it isn’t like I’m not paying any tax at all
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yes I keep telling the other guy I’m building my emergency funds then I’ll invest heavily I didn’t forget about 401k or Roth IRA once I get my emergency fund maxed out then I’ll invest heavily in index funds im not comfortable investing heavily yet once I build my emergency funds I’ll put all my earned money into my retirement
nanneryeeter@reddit
Not great but not terrible.
legollama88@reddit
if i worked 65 hours i would gross 2446
Ok-Jellyfish-8068@reddit
Yu fuckin right
austin2825@reddit
My taxes were 1200 last check.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
That’s the problem, that’s way to much in taxes imagine you worked your ass off then the government takes 50 percent of the check
BoringJuiceBox@reddit
My last check was 1200. (We’re all getting screwed)
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
To clear some things up I only go exempt 6 months a year. But I won’t be doing that anymore after this year, I can claim my son on my w2 and pay way less taxes with head of household then vs someone without kids so I can have an extra $100-200 on my check
TooFarGanja@reddit
never been impressed with a lot of money if you have to work 65 hours for it
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Only reason I’m doing overtime now is to prepare for my son due in October
xeikai@reddit
Same, my checks are similar when i go that high, usually involves working weekends.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I only go exempt 6 months a year not the whole year
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I don’t have to work 65 hours. I’m on schedule for 50-55 but I like to do overtime
KnownAdvantage5366@reddit
$24.9 an hour with time and half after 40
Deltonious@reddit
Why the fuck are your taxes so low
DawnPatrol99@reddit
Today I learned Truckers don't understand intrest apparently.
Dr_Adderall_2000@reddit
Damn. All these people out here earning decent take home while I’m here in a mega barely cracking $1k.
mrsclausemenopause@reddit
I quit OTR and do radioactive hazmat. A single 2 day route is about 800+ in the pocket after expenses at current fuel prices ($150 extra in fuel to make that run vs a few months ago)
Distinct-Event-7472@reddit
I went from driving for a mega dry van to hauling flatbed with some big boy loads still not driving by my self but learning a lot
unwantedrelic@reddit
Bro, does your company offer a 401k? You’re throwing money out the window if you’re not at least putting their Match amount in.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I’m building stability first
then long-term wealth
Blitherinidiot@reddit
You can do both especially if they match just do a low percent 5% PRETAX meaning you get taxed less you wont even notice it but in a few years you'll be happy you did it.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yes I’ll increase to 5 percent but I’ll start maxing it out in September once my savings goal is complete
FarCry_98@reddit
That’s exactly what I did a year and a half ago (5% and they match up to 4%) and you’re right, I’m glad I did. I don’t even notice it.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yes I’ll increase it just a little bit more
Deathbydecay@reddit
Pretty good for that time where I live.
MustangMark83@reddit
Gosh, this just makes me realize how shitty local pay is here in Florida. You won’t make near that much unless maybe you do food service
Groundbreaking-Emu64@reddit
You gotta pay taxes too and don’t have health insurance or any other incentives. @ 65 hrs it’s not worth it imo your real take home is about 14-1500 after deductions depending on state. Go get a job with a w-2
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
It is a w2 job
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I do have health insurance
Rrudderr@reddit
Op has no idea how taxes works lol
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
What is everyone concerned about my taxes? I pay at end of year anyway so it doesn’t matter
navlgazer9@reddit
You’re only losing 10% for taxes ?
How is that possible ?
SS alone is 7% if you’re W-2 and 16% if you’re 1099
Plus federal income tax of 12 to 22%
GainMoreWeight@reddit
OP already mentioned that he's going to pay the rest in April because he doesn't want to give the government an interest-free loan. Absolutely nothing wrong with that if you are disciplined and can save money.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Exactly
TruckinTuba@reddit
I mean, you're about 5 less an hour than me 😅
KingofthePi11@reddit
This has to be food service!
Woahgold@reddit
$2,200 gross would be a 46 hour week for me.
GroundbreakingAsk438@reddit
I just made the same amount but get paid per mile home every day
ThanksALotBud@reddit
Brother, based on the comments, please seek a financial advisor.
Chewbacca_Holmes@reddit
Breaks down to about $28.477 per hour with overtime. I make a little more than that ($32/hr), but I haul fuel so it’s all hazmat all night long.
Oversdub@reddit
Depends on where local is
austin2825@reddit
What state? What type of cdl jobs are paying drivers that amount for that many hours? I work 60 hours a week too.
A_Cranb3rry@reddit
Really hourly (that pays OT) is the way to go. This driver makes about what I would if I chose to work 65 hours a week. But I just pull dry van, drop and hook 90% of the time.
austin2825@reddit
I’m in foodservice, so I do agree hourly is where it’s at. My last 2 week check had 128 hours and 58 minutes on it so I was just shocked to see that amount. I have the seniority so I don’t have to work that much and I could just choose a much easier route. I just prefer to keep it around 60 or so hours
A_Cranb3rry@reddit
I'll never work non hourly as a driver anymore. My company has stopped hiring hourly for the account I'm on. But everyone who had it, is grandfathered in. IMO his pay is pretty good/above average if he's somewhere not very expensive and hopefully doesn't have to do anything crazy like fuel hauling.
Like I said I make roughly what he makes and I live pretty well. Vacations/flights/newish car and apartment. But... Inflation is catching up quick.
Sea-Bed-1332@reddit
Very good
GainMoreWeight@reddit
Because they are on W2 instead of 1099. Can't write off much.
GOGETTHEMINTS@reddit
I’m in the warehouse now but that’s my take home for about 58 hours. The moneys nice but I can’t do it all year or my body would fall apart. I’m happy with that a third of the year. And the rest 6-10 hours days.
Pedialyte1221@reddit
I make about the same on night shift but I’m switching to days making 24/ hour then 36 on ot
Not-A-Pickle1@reddit
65 hours gets me about $2800 gross, and 1900 net but I have lots of benefits so my taxes come out to about 30%.
AsphaltPirate74@reddit
That's a lotta hours for that much pay for the week
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Yep I do lots of overtime
AsphaltPirate74@reddit
If you don't mind the OT then that's good money per week.
I was making $27.50/hr barely going past 40 hours every week and only bringing in $1000 a week after taxes
