During the earlier years of TST I remember Matt Farah went here with a BMW X5M that was loaned to him by BMW. After it was over he wanted to buy the X5 from BMW but they said no and took the SUV back to Germany.

jcy@reddit

that guy's collection is pretty elite, surprised that an X5M impressed him
View on Reddit #86970967

Eggith@reddit

Well this was during his early days. Back then I think he had his Ford Raptor and the C5 Corvette. I think a piece of him wanting that was also how much he had been through with the SUV. He basically road tripped through the US with it and had minimal complaints.

i thought he was from wealthy family associated w/ calvin klein, surely he was able to indulge a supercar impulse buy

So Mark and co-driver got 1st while Jack and Bridge Stone guy got 2nd? Mark is a better driver than Jack and Mark will never be happy is what I got from this video (also, crazy how such a long running event is so poor logistically). It's was really neat to see; of all the car utuber channels, I don't think I've seen anyone really cover this.

SavageGooseJack@reddit

Mark and I ran in two different classes entirely. I was in “luxury” and mark was in mid priced. The classes are just based on the original Msrp of the car. I had 7 other vehicles in luxury class than ranged from 2 fully built bmw race cars with full areo to an old cts. Where mark placed first in his class of 3 which included a v70 Volvo which broke down and an old impala SS. What most people seem to care about is placing in the overall. David and I finished 17 and mark finished 40th. It’s a very cool event but it’s a lot of down time.

Thanks for the context. Question: I know you didn't a lot of time to familiarize yourself with the tracks but which ones would you really like to return to or loved driving?
View on Reddit #86754324

tannit@reddit

I was looking forward to Jack's answer. Since he hasn't done so yet.... I've been to every track that was on the schedule for this year's OLOA. In my personal opinion, Hallett is the most fun. It's a small track, but it flows well and has nice elevation change. It's the kind of track where you could turn off the lap timer and just enjoy a day of romping on the car. Controversial opinion: Road America is overrated. The facility is world class, but I found the track layout to be boring. It's wide everywhere, which is great for wheel to wheel racing, but it doesn't flow at all. Straight, 90 degree turn, straight, 90 degree turn, over and over. I still enjoyed it and would be happy to go back, but folks think the long history and fame means it's one of the best tracks in the country and it really isn't. I don't see any duds on the schedule. They're all fun and I'd go back to any of them. If I were ranking the six tracks on One Lap 2026, I'd give Hallett a very slight edge for first place, then everything else as a 5-way tie for second. They're all worth visiting.

zxrax@reddit

OLOA is a slog, being a good driver is a baseline requirement but winning is about consistency and, honestly, a bit of luck.

I've done One Lap of America five times. Thank you to the Savagegeese fellas for bringing more attention to it. I'm always surprised when I meet car enthusiasts who haven't heard of it. It's a very special event and I think it should be on the bucket list for anyone who drives on track and loves a challenge. Some thoughts on the video: At one point, I think Jack said the co-driver is very important, only behind the car itself. I disagree - I think the co-driver is more important than the car. Fixing a problematic car with a good friend is way easier than suffering a week with someone you don't like in a flawless car. The week is a pressure cooker - you'll see a side of your co-driver you've never seen before. Not everyone handles pressure like that well. Unfortunately, you won't be able to find that out till you're both going through the wringer. In my experience, it was important to not only have compatible personalities, but also be on the same page as far as expectations. Some folks want to win, some folks don't care about times. Not agreeing on that can be tough to surmount. In my five times on One Lap, I've never sat on grid for hours. Not sure what happened there. Your spot in the lineup is initially decided by a mostly arbitrary numbering system. On the very first track day, you'll grid based on that number. If your number is 50, you can chill in the paddock until you see cars in the high 30s/low 40s heading to grid. The first track session will determine your place for the rest of the week. If you place 20th on time that first track session, you grid 20th from then on. Again, you'd watch for cars a couple run groups ahead of yours and head to the grid then. The commute between tracks may seem like a nuisance between the important parts, i.e. the track sessions. That's not the point. One Lap of America is the spiritual successor to the Cannonball Run. This is the legal, "safe" version, where cars can do the 3000+ miles of highway at normal highway speeds (wink wink), but still have the competition element of the Cannonball Run. It wouldn't be One Lap of America without the long drives.

What's your ownership/experience with the TTRS been like?
View on Reddit #86873608

tannit@reddit

Fantastic. The TTRS is an incredible car. EV-like acceleration, some of the best sounds in the automotive world, far better handling than folks give it credit for (it can actually be quite tail-happy. This is not the source of the "audisteer" reputation), very nice interior, far more practical than most people think. I think it's a shame it's not a more popular car. Would have loved to see it with the haldex improvements that the 8Y RS3 received. The TTRS had already been discontinued by then.

I hope Mark’s well. He seemed more negative than usual. Jack seemed happier, but there was some lingering negativity. Seemed like Mark was starting some shit early on that wasn’t helpful, in pursuit of….. a better video? Placing better? Who cares about who’s the first or the 2nd driver. It looks fun! The RE-71RZ showed itself well. Bridgestone guy seemed like a fun dude. Hope he had a good time. Seems like if the event were better organized, it’d be easier to catch a kip and the whole event would be better to participate in. Would love to give it a go sometime. Didn’t know it existed. Mark, bud, love you - shit’s hard, we get it - take more time with the camera off maybe. Feels like you need to find some joy. Good luck!

TrueSwagformyBois@reddit

I don’t have a relationship with them. I don’t believe I ever will. But human to human and between folks with similar interests, I want the best for them. Sometimes it takes a push. Sometimes it takes a genuine expression of care from an unexpected place.
View on Reddit #86682050

aprtur@reddit

I would agree with you here, especially emphasizing the fact that we're all just....people.  It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, it doesn't mean you can't genuinely reach out to someone or engage them in a conversation.  Jack and Mark, as well as James from ThrottleHouse, all engage on this forum frequently, and like any other enthusiast - I think we all appreciate them as fellow enthusiasts, but seems mainly like very young people are the ones putting them on a pedestal as "better than" (which I find normal for kids, honestly).
View on Reddit #86696025

antaphar@reddit

Re-71RZ are insane. Just got a set for my C7 Z06. They grip like you wouldn’t believe. Hardly any wheel spin with launches, which is wild for a RWD car with 650 ftlbs.

What size are you running? Trying to get new wheels for my grandsport to run them.

315/30-18 F and 335/30-18 R. I put them on 18x11 F 18x12.5 R Apex wheels. I went with 18 in the rear for better tire selection. If you go up to 19” in the rear then the widest RE-71RZ is 325

View on Reddit #86700382

crunchynibbas@reddit

Was he? I think he was just being honest about the experience and setting expectations. "Hurry up and wait" with poor logistics and some pretty harsh rules and tight timing does seem stressful. And the eye infection. After a few days they seemed to cheer up and click.
View on Reddit #86682627

koopa00@reddit

He showed that he had an eye infection in the beginning and mentioned that he couldn't sleep at all the first few days, and then everything clicked and they were all getting along well and had fun. Sounds like all he had was a rough start.

All that driving for just 6 laps on a track? Seems like a terrible way to spend your time
View on Reddit #86675551

yobo9193@reddit

They said 6 \*timed\* laps. They also said later that they did 70-80 laps total over 10 tracks, so there's warm up laps included. If that still seems low, that's not uncommon for competitive motorsports events, especially one's as well attended as OLOA.
View on Reddit #86676249

withsexyresults@reddit

Ah missed that it was actually 80laps. That’s closer to like 8 20min sessions so not as bad but man that’s still like 90% boring driving for 10% fun driving

View on Reddit #86682398

chadwicke619@reddit

I mean, are you guys all wearing matching outfits and driving to the track together like some sort of biker gang? For me, it’s a three or four hour trip each way. You leave the night before, stay in a hotel, wake up early as fuck because the track is still 30-40 minutes away, then you spend the whole day baking in the sun for 60-90 mins so you can drive for 15 mins. You do that like 5-6 times and then you spend a few hours driving home totally fried, or spend another night in a hotel, then drive home. I get that the hardcore guys are bringing their RV and camping and all kinds of shit, but the experience I just described is what tracking a car is like for 99% of the people who ever do it. Driving on track is fun, and being at the track is fun - meeting all the people and hanging on the paddock is fun. Absolutely everything about the logistics of being into track driving is fucking miserable.
View on Reddit #86700567

yobo9193@reddit

Are you under the impression that they're driving to each track in their race suits, because that's now what I saw in the video. And I'm fully aware that the logistics of track days aren't fun, but having a fried to do it with makes it much more bearable. The dude I was replying to is just bitching because he's never done competitive motorsports and doesn't realize how little track time you actually get at these events.
View on Reddit #86760368

chadwicke619@reddit

It was a joke - most people I know don’t drive \*to\* the track together. If you’re fully aware that the logistics of track days aren’t fun, then why did you press the other person for saying that driving to the track isn’t fun? They’re right, in my opinion - it’s not fun at all. Yes, having a friend does make the whole thing more bearable, but it doesn’t make it fun. Having a friend is the difference between going and not going at all - for me, anyway.

The_Exia@reddit

Do you like the refresh CT5?  I personally like that they added the precision package but outside of that I can't get behind the front end change or the interior change with the giant screen. Especially because they deleted functions like volume knobs for manual cars. I prefer the 22-24 version in every way except I wish I could get the precision package with the pre refresh (I owned a '23 manual).
View on Reddit #86698497

SavageGooseJack@reddit

I prefer the interior of the pre refresh but I like the front end of the refresh. That said the precision package is very neat though realistically not necessarily as very few will probably track their blackwing often enough to make it worth it
View on Reddit #86702120

vipersolo@reddit

I was so surprised to read this comment because I am completely the opposite: Much better interior on the refresh, but like the older front end! To each his own I guess!
View on Reddit #86712525

withsexyresults@reddit

What was the reason you guys only can do 6-8 laps per track?
View on Reddit #86698767

tannit@reddit

There's ~85 teams on One Lap. They stack as many cars into each run group as they can, but that's still only 4-6 cars on track at once. Any more than that and there'd be too much passing, which affects the lap times. It takes about 3 hours to get through all 85 teams. There's a morning session that goes from roughly 8am to 11am, then an hour or so for the staff to each lunch, then they repeat the process from roughly noon to 3pm. The teams still have 400 to 700+ miles to drive that afternoon to get to the next track, so everyone needs to get going as quickly as possible. Can't still be driving on the track at 6pm or you'll never get any sleep.
View on Reddit #86703303

withsexyresults@reddit

Gotcha, that makes sense. Thanks for breaking it down
View on Reddit #86705006

SavageGooseJack@reddit

One lap only has you do 2 secessions at each track. The entire time your on track is what is timed, so they measure you for 3 flying laps, it’s not like time attack where all they do is take your fastest lap

I’m really surprised the blackwing’s tires survived 4000 miles. I figured the rears would be totally bald with that kind of power and weight. Maybe the least important thing but, I’d be curious what kind of gas mileage they both averaged over the whole trip.
View on Reddit #86674829

tannit@reddit

As already mentioned, the vast majority of the miles being highway miles helps. Two more factors help: 1. Jack and Mark said they weren't very familiar with the tracks. Unless you're an absolute alien (and there are several on One Lap), you're driving far below 10/10ths on a track you don't know. 2. Alignment affects tire wear substantially. On these nearly stock cars, the alignment settings would be fairly mild. I think Mark said they managed only -1.8 degrees of camber on the Honda. That's not a lot.
View on Reddit #86705917

zxrax@reddit

It definitely helps that 3850 of those 4000mi were easy boring highway miles.
View on Reddit #86696312

Charles0nline@reddit

For sure but, it does look like they drove it hard for those track miles.
View on Reddit #86697292

crunchynibbas@reddit

The new RZs must have improved wear dramatically then. My RSs were toast after a season and half of autocross with a codriver.
View on Reddit #86682686

Yeah that's surprising to me too. The RE-71(x) is generally known for excellent performance, terrible life.
View on Reddit #86696472

yobo9193@reddit

I was following along by following Jack's IG and got really hyped to see that they were participating. There was a great pic of Mark wearing the Buc-ees mascot outfit, which did not get enough love during the video. But 2 HOURS of sitting on grid is insane. I've had to sit for 15 minutes while a car gets scraped off track, but I'd also be in a shitty mood if an event was so poorly run that we needed to sit on grid for hours
View on Reddit #86678171

aprtur@reddit

I've known about this event for a long time, and hearing it was run like that was pretty surprising to me.  It should be more well oiled by now, but make I'm missing something - sounds like toward the end they were making the scheduling work more for them to be able to relax.
