Milk should depreciate as it gets closer to it's expiration date

There is no reason that I should have to pay the same price for a gallon that will expire in two days compared to one that will expire in over a week. Especially considering it will probably go unsold, grocery stores should have the prices go down as they get closer to the expatriation date

This is what happens but its not continous. Also milk is good only for a certain time after opening regardless of its sell by date. About 1 week. It will go had long before the sell by date if you buy one early and open it immediately.

We have this in Norway to combat wasting food. 40-50% discount on food that is close to being expired.

I live near a local grocery store that reduces the price of deli food by half a day before they throw it out. It’s the best system ever, they throw away less product and I get a great chocolate pie for half price.

Dang that's awesome

It's pretty usual in Argentina to offer discounts on products close to expiration dates. They are correctly marked as such. I've never seen milk, but it's normal with other diary products like yoghurt or cheese.

Dynamic pricing is already a thing in grocery stores here. Especially for fresh goods.

The positive interpretation: Poor people can save money
The negative interpretation: Poor people will be systematically poisoned
Electrical-Ad1288@reddit
The expiration date is more of a best by date rather than a safety one. A lot of products are still edible for weeks. I can save quite a bit at my local salvage grocery store.

Milk is not really one of those products. You might get a few extra days but I've had milk go bad before the date too.

The neutral interpretation: Poor people will save money while being systematically poisoned

That's why they have those "dynamic pricing" things now.

Lots of grocery stores do this. Around me it’s typical to see 30% off if it’s within a day or two of the sell by date.
But honestly? The best by date is not an expiration date. You should have at least 5+ days after the sell by date where it’s safe and fresh.
If your milk is actually spoiled (chunky, smelly) within a day or two of buying it then the store has an issue with their refrigeration or something. That’s not normal.
Finally, ultra filtered and ultra pasteurized milk has a very long shelf life. FairLife has a ridiculously long life, usually 6+ weeks from time of purchase.

If you knew the amount of labor involved in getting cows milk you would think differently

I don't. That's why this sub is called "Crazy Ideas" and not "Logical Ideas"

This actually happens all the time. Grocery stores discount items that are close to their sell by date.

My shop discounts almost everything that's close to expiry date. Cheese, meat etc. Never saw milk, but I noticed those have a pretty decent churn.
I also think the shops are getting better and better at guessing how much to order, so they have less to discount.
couldathrowaway@reddit
They take it back ane either re-boil it or simply turn it into cheese that youll pay fill price for
CupSouth639@reddit
This would work.
