Has anyone else ever had one of these visits from their energy company?

Yes, I've had this in relation to the first gen smart meter - apparently there was an issue with them where a certain type of fault (which I was assured was rare) could lead to the meter going into a state where the main relay in it could potentially overheat so it had to be swapped out ASAP.
Booked it in, they sent ENWL to replace the meter - about 15 mins work then all was good.
Pretty much our whole street had them swapped out at roughly the same time - I genuinely wouldn't worry about it and just get it booked in and done.

Thanks for the reply, the wife just got a bit worried we were going to geba locksmith at the door 😂 it's all booked in so should have a new fancy (and safe) meter in a few weeks.

Pretty normal, energy companies usually use NWS when there’s a serious or known issue with a meter, rather than just a routine check or attempt at upgrading.
It’s all about just making sure it actually gets done, or if it isn’t, then there’s a well-documented paper trail so if something happens then your energy company can prove they tried.

Ah ok that makes sense thanks for the reply. I read that energy suppliers are supposed to inspect your meters every 2 years. Don't know if that's true but we haven't had a visit since it was installed in 2018. I have had it fault a few times since it was installed and had to have an engineer out once to restore power, hasn't happened since he came out a few years ago but maybe the meter has a known fault. I'll rest easy knowing that I'm not going to have a locksmith at my door and a rep with a warrant just to replace my meter 😂 The wife was worried we were in trouble when she ready the letter 😅

It could also be someone on your feed has tampered with a meter and they are double checking everything.
