Would you rather have air conditioning or tumble dryers?

On a hot day like this, I start thinking about how nice it would be to have air conditioning as standard in British homes and places of business. But when it’s grey and wet and drizzly and my laundry won’t dry outside, I think about how useful it would be to have a tumble dryer. Both aren’t great for the environment, but if you had to pick one as a standard feature of the average British home, which would it be?
asoifjaoifjasd@reddit
Genuinely don’t understand how so many people live without a tumble dryer.
WinglyBap@reddit
I just use a dehumidifier next to a clothes horse. Much more economical and prevents damp but also the clothes aren’t as soft.
red_nick@reddit
Dehumidifier next to clothes horse is great.
Plus_Pangolin_8924@reddit
One better: A heat pump dryer! What you are doing but in a more usable form.
fuck_peeps_not_sheep@reddit
My cat is an asshole who tips the clothes horse over
smiley6125@reddit
I do the same but still use a tumble dryer at times.
I’m also lucky enough to have put in air con to our bedroom which is a god send. You use it more often than you think you would and it can be a heater in the winter as well as dehumidifier you don’t need to empty.
turboRock@reddit
It's just me... If I had a family then yeah I guess so
jolie_j@reddit
They’re expensive and bad for the environment so I made a conscious choice not to. But did recently get a dehumidifier which has been game changing!
Plus_Pangolin_8924@reddit
Heat Pump Driers, its just a dehumidifier with a drum. Dirt cheap to run and doesn't waste a load of heat too!
Mountain-Plastic-432@reddit
I was just coming to comment this. I love mine. It's so cheap I can run it off a couple of poorly placed solar panels in the back garden.
Flashy-Pizza-Pie@reddit (OP)
Definitely a game changer. I love my dehumidifier. One of our neighbours was chucking it out so my husband took it. My daughter frequently had coughing fits and chest infections, but since we started using a dehumidifier she’s been fine.
jolie_j@reddit
Amazing!! Glad that has worked for you! We snapped up one from Lidl.. not super cheap but not as expensive as a lot of them. Sort of as a trial. And so far it’s working really well. If it breaks I’d definitely replace it!
We’ve managed to repurpose our 3rd bedroom which functions as an office and an occasional guest room. It’s now got the clothes horses living in it with the dehumidifier, so we hang all the laundry in there. We used to have it just in the living room or the kitchen which I absolutely hated and would definitely be an argument for getting a tumble drier!!
stauer88@reddit
I don't either. And the main argument I see is they they have no space, but I guarantee they have a clothes dryer stood up somewhere that is up for 90% of the time and that has a bigger footprint than a tumble dryer. And if you get a condensation dryer then there is no need for a vent!
Plus_Pangolin_8924@reddit
If they go for a Heat Pump one its even better and cheaper to run too!
AndrewHinds67@reddit
Because they don't have the room for one. Not everyone has a big house with a large kitchen or a utility room.
gooblefrump@reddit
Clothes horse and a dehumidifier
CriticalCentimeter@reddit
I've used mine maybe 5 times in 10 years
Nights_Harvest@reddit
Appartmen i lived in once had it.
Its like cars, you do not know what you are missing out on unless you experirnce it.
Once i have a kid, it is on must to get list
atomic_mermaid@reddit
...in many cases it's because they have to.
asoifjaoifjasd@reddit
Tbh even if my house was tiny I’d put one in the living room and make use of it as a sideboard as well if I had no room elsewhere.
Surely otherwise you’d just have loads of damp clothes and airers getting in the way of things.
Flashy-Pizza-Pie@reddit (OP)
I don’t have one and yeah we do more or less have damp clothes hanging up over the radiator all the time, but I don’t mind it. I live in a very small open plan flat, so I wouldn’t care to have any more noisy appliances than I currently do.
OptionalQuality789@reddit
Hang the clothes up next to a dehumidifier and they’re dry overnight. Super easy.
anabsentfriend@reddit
I have one and never use it.
mk6971@reddit
They're expensive to run. Dehumidifier is much cheaper during the winter. Any other time fresh air and warmth is free.
Total_Rules@reddit
They’re not all expensive to run. Mine has a heart pump and costs around 15p for a load.
Affectionate_Bat617@reddit
I don't have kids and we have space to dry clothes in a room with a dehumidifier.
When we repurpose the room, we'll get a tumble dryer.
Euphoric-Orchid488@reddit
That’s what I’m thinking. I had to do it for a bit and it was a nightmare, couldn’t ever get my clothes dry. Had one of those heated airers still took days
MadJamJar@reddit
Air con cause i bought a dehumidifier which is awesome for clothes drying during the wet months
TheScrobber@reddit
Aircon, I've never really needed a tumble drier.
TheRegularBelt@reddit
Air con.
CouchAlchemist@reddit
It's the Stockholm syndrome of growing up with a weather that is partial to rest of the world as no one ever visits the UK for it's weather.
abfgern_@reddit
I genuinely would miss drizzle if I moved away
TheRegularBelt@reddit
The wife and I are considering moving over to Japan in the next few years and I will truly miss the rain if we do lol.
PsychologySpecific16@reddit
I don't think my coat is dry now from a downpour (that felt like an ocean had been dumped on us) in Fukuoka.
zzkj@reddit
Depending on where you relocate to, you might have plenty of rain. Japan has a remarkably varied climate.
Enough-Moose-5816@reddit
Heavy heavy snow some places
zzkj@reddit
And very high humidity in other places. A friend of ours lived in Osaka for years and has some stories about how hot and humid it gets there. Overall though, living in Japan were the best years of her life.
TheRegularBelt@reddit
Ah, that's cool. I mean, when I lived over there for a bit, it was mainly sun with some shower-y spells. The discussion of moving was mainly mentioned because my wife is Japanese and I'm also interested in relocating eventually under the write circumstances.
Kind_Worldliness6774@reddit
Rains there all the time you fat pussy
PassiveTheme@reddit
I moved from the UK to Canada and every time I mentioned to Canadians I know that I was moving to Vancouver they warned me that it rains a lot there - yes, that's one of the things that appeals to me about it.
imtiramisu2025@reddit
Same the older ive got the less I can tolerate heat and I grew up in greece with no aircon
LockedinYou@reddit
I do honestly prefer the colder days. I absolutely do enjoy the sun and blue skies that we have and I enjoy to see the country turn green with colour. But anything over 20°c is just too much for me
Akash_nu@reddit
This is basically me! Give me sunny days with mild temperature and life is good. I’m in Malta right now, sitting on the balcony by the ocean, it’s 21°C. Perfect weather 👌🏼
Kind_Worldliness6774@reddit
Fucking loser
Dranask@reddit
I use my air conditioner in the winter to top up and warm the room I’m in rather than heat the house.
If it were standard it would be better fitted rather than an add on. But leave a space for me to fit my preferred tumble drier option.
Unbeknownsttooyou@reddit
I'm with you.
Also, hot weather makes people stink... Including me
cardiffman100@reddit
Tumble dryer is an absolute game changer. If you don't have air con, you can say least point a fan directly on you for some relief. But waiting hours for clothes to dry, while that evaporation makes your home really humid is not fun.
SessionOld7140@reddit
Never had an AC nor a tumble dryer. I'd rather have an AC.
Mammoth-Passion-413@reddit
I have both - but to be fair my tuble dryer is a heat pump model so it does not mater if it's on or not anytime - it's less than .5kWh to do a dry and produces no heat at all.
Psychological-Plum10@reddit
Air con, I got married in 1976 and honestly don't recall it being particularly hot, nowadays I can't cope with the heat.
Plus_Pangolin_8924@reddit
My tumble gets used at least twice a week all year. As much as it would be nice to have it would only get used a few times a year vs the tumble.
I_will_never_reply@reddit
You guys can afford to run tumble dryers?
ShineAtom@reddit
Well, air con especially for upstairs would be great. I've realised I'm best with a fairly narrow temperature range of 17-22C. And even 22C is getting on the warm side. I turn down the central heating in winter when the room goes over 21C. Sleep is an issue when it's over 18C.
I do have a tumble dryer as in a washer-dryer but only use it for a few things. Otherwise washing is hung up with a dehumidifier to speed the drying on its way. Clearly I'm going for air con now I see I already have a perfect drying alternative.
cari-strat@reddit
Tumble dryer, my life would be horrendous without one. I've survived half a century without aircon but a British winter of laundry with four adult sized humans, some with dirty jobs and hobbies, and three dogs, is not fun.
FinalEgg9@reddit
I'm gonna say tumble dryers because whilst I hate the heat, I'm too disabled to hang washing out on the line so without a tumble dryer I wouldn't ever have clean washing.
himit@reddit
tumble dryers, I know how to live in the heat & it's never hot for long enough anyway
Infections95@reddit
You can buy air source heat pump dryer that's actually very energy efficient
Busy-Doughnut6180@reddit
Tumble dryer. The heat bothers me at most 3 months of the year. Not being able to dry my clothes properly bothers me at least 9 months of the year.
agingbiker@reddit
neighbor has just put one in, and apparently its also an efficient heater for winter
BigMagic88@reddit
Tumble dryer for sure. I’d use it more. And I like the heat but only need cooler air for sleeping
StardustOasis@reddit
Air con can be used for heating as well as cooling at least.
Ham_Queen@reddit
Absolutely a tumble drier. Being too hot sucks, but I can use a fan and some open windows etc. Having a tumble drier and getting clothes dried in no time in winter... Amazing
(I don't have either)
Derfel60@reddit
Wait tumble dryers arent standard?
TwoValuable@reddit
I know very few people who own or use a tumble dryer. We have a combi one in our washing machine and it's useless, probably used it a handful of times in the time we've owned it.
Derfel60@reddit
Thats mad to me, everyone i know has one. Its so much quicker than waiting for things to dry
No-Sandwich1511@reddit
Air con
Mikeytee1000@reddit
Why not both?
richbun@reddit
Tumble dryer x 270 days/year. Air con x 3 days/year.
I'll just make some ice for my drinks!🤣
AndrewHinds67@reddit
I have both. In fact, my tumble dryer is running downstairs. It's one of the new heat pump versions, and I'm up in my bedroom having a lie down before going to work tonight and I have the air-conditioning on because my bedroom gets really hot on sunny days.
ExoticMangoz@reddit
Tumble dryers are fantastic and the UK does not get hot enough, even on the odd day where “hot” is actually applicable, for me to want aircon.
bahumat42@reddit
Air con.
I haven't had a tumble drier in years and don't miss it.
Time-Mode-9@reddit
I have a tumble dryer, but I never use it.
I probably wouldn't use air con either.
Amylou789@reddit
Air-conditioning combined with solar panels. Then on the days you need it you have plenty of green energy to power it.
zephyrmox@reddit
AC can run as a dehumidifier and if you can hang clothes, it will dry them very quickly. AC a million times over.
Sleepyllama23@reddit
Air con for the three weeks a year I’d need it! I have a tumble dryer but am using it less and less, using clothes racks by the radiator and I’ve recently bought a dehumidifier which speeds things up. Whenever I can hang the washing outside I do.
flip8t2@reddit
New york has similar seasons to the UK, but most houses/apartments over there have air con like it's a standard thing. It is strange that over here we have to either buy a unit or just roast all day.
feetflatontheground@reddit
They don't have similar seasons at all. It's more extreme over there. It's hotter in the summer and colder in the winter. The weather we're having now wouldn't qualify as a heatwave to them. 27-30 degrees: that's just summer.
flip8t2@reddit
I'm not just talking about the heat today. This is nothing, the UK can get much hotter than this. Yea, we all know New York can be more extreme heat wise, but to me it's not majorly different. I've lived in New York for 6 yrs, if anything, everything is just bigger, more space, wider roads etc...
YesIAmRightWing@reddit
tumble dryer every day of the week.
live in an old property so its always cool and the cellar is always 10c.
jurwell@reddit
My wife and I have lived together more than 10 years and we’ve never had a tumble dryer, so I don’t miss it. I’d absolutely adore an air con unit.
skratakh@reddit
I've never not had a tumble dryer, I thought they were pretty common.
Cold_Philosophy@reddit
My son lives in France - they’ve been fine up until the last couple of years but it’s got stupidly hot for where they live. So they’ve invested in a/c in a couple of rooms so they can at least sleep.
As for us back here in the North West, we have a washing machine/tumble dryer combo thing. We rarely use the dryer. We hang washing out as much as possible (which isnt always) and we also have a dehumidifier which helps a great deal to dry clothes and, if it’s too hot, it makes things a little more comfortable.
HeverAfter@reddit
Tumble dryer. More cold and rainy weather than hot.
SoggyWotsits@reddit
Tumble dryer. I use mine far more than I would air con.
Mafz09@reddit
Considering we get hot weather like this for maybe 10 months out of 12, the correct answer is definitely tumble dryer
Also I have nowhere to dry clothes without one so I’m reliant on one
Original_Bad_3416@reddit
I’m team AC.
Hate the hose dangling out the window but to have air is superb
Mysterious-Sock39@reddit
We have Aircon lovely 4 rooms best think we ever got
Short-Shopping3197@reddit
I couldn’t give a shit about having a tumble dryer, so air con.
Poke-Mom00@reddit
My clothes are soooo much softer though and faster. Day to day in the UK it’s more helpful, but air con is higher value on these days
West_Yorkshire@reddit
Dehumidifier is the answer to have both things.
Flashy-Pizza-Pie@reddit (OP)
Yes, this. We started using a dehumidifier and, no matter the weather, our clothes almost always dry overnight.
OptionalQuality789@reddit
Never use a tumble dryer, would kill for air con.
If you have a dehumidifier you generally don’t need a dryer.
timiny74@reddit
I do hang clothes to dry whenever possible but I’d use the tumble dryer a million times more than AC. You have to consider cost, it’d be a monumental expense for very little reward to have AC in every house in Britain.
Junior-Service1044@reddit
air con tumble dryers allways shrink my clothes
Cantabulous_@reddit
If you have AC (well, a heat pump, so both heating and cooling) then it'll also help dry clothes and dehumidify year-round. Just need to hang them in the room and let the air circulate.
bbenjjaminn@reddit
I think heatpumps is where we're all headed in the next 10-20 years.
FletchLives99@reddit
Live in London (have also lived in much hotter places). Never feel the need for air con.
My tumble drier, OTOH, is quite useful.
PaulaDeen21@reddit
Not fussed for aircon, but actively don’t want a tumble dryer… so I guess aircon.
EUskeptik@reddit
We have both. A portable air conditioner for the bedroom (bliss on days like this!) and a heat pump tumble dryer which uses a fraction of the electricity of a conventional dryer.
-##-
LittleMissAbigail@reddit
Tumble dryer. Not just for the year-round usefulness, but that it also saves me having to iron assuming I get my clothes out and hung/folded fast enough.
NeitherBag4722@reddit
I have both and the dryer has been a must have (lived for 20 years in flats without anywhere to dry clothes outside). All our clothes still get dried in a tumble dryer.
We used portable ac units for for many years (I have three sitting unused in the garage) and had ac installed last year in three west facing rooms, and I wouldn't be without it now. The installed ac is almost certainly cheaper to run than the portable units.
Competitive_Pen7192@reddit
Tumble dryers smash up clothes over time.
I go full frugal with a dehumidifier, desk fan and clothes rack. Dries most stuff in 6 to 8 hours plus it helps keep the damp down.
D0wnb0at@reddit
Aircon. I have a portable one which cost me about £500 and feel like it’s a life saver as I hate it when it’s too hot. Had it for a few years now and really thinking about getting a proper aircon installed around the house but that’s a lot more expensive.
I have never had a tumble drier, and more than happy to hang clothes on a clothes horse when the weather isn’t great.
Remote-Pool7787@reddit
Air con in the UK is hilarious. It’s not like heating, you can’t whack it on for a couple of hours, it has to stay on all day. No one is affording that
HalfAgony-HalfHope@reddit
Tumble dryer. Use it all the time. Would use Air Con for like 1 week a year 🤣
Alexandhisgoose@reddit
As someone in the UK that has air conditioning it is the way to go
dospc@reddit
Tumble dryer. Even with climate change, our hot weather is measured in weeks but our grim rainy damp is measured in months.
MegsSixx@reddit
Air conditioning. I live top floor flat and it's a sauna in here, I absolutely despise heat and would love air conditioning
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
Tumble dryer is far more useful
The_AJR@reddit
Air con 10000%. Air con also doubles up as a dehumidifier in the winter so it makes a tumble dryer irrelevant
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
AC definitely, I hang dry clothes anyway
Mendel247@reddit
Having lived in the south of Spain for a decade, air con. The UK is going to keep on getting warmer, and one day they're likely going to be needed. I'm not expecting to get 47 or 49°c like I did in Spain, but I do know that the only time I ever suffered heat stroke was on a 27°c day in Canterbury
Vequihellin@reddit
My tumble dryer is useless and makes the clothes reek. So we have a heated airer. Given that air con units also have dehumidifier functions, I would say I'd rather have air con and a heated airer.
Lolabird2112@reddit
Air con. A dehumidifier works brilliantly and also helps the house as well. No need for a tumble dryer.
Jenpot@reddit
Tumble dryer as I already have one. We do a wash a day and it saves so much time. I always believed they were really expensive to run because my mum told me when I was wee, but they're not these days. Plus, no damp from drying clothes!
AndyTheSane@reddit
A condenser dryer can be ok since all of the energy used goes into the house, saving a bit of heating.
destria@reddit
This is going to sound terrible but I use my tumble dryer everyday. With kids I'm doing laundry nearly everyday and don't have the time to hang it up and let it all air dry! At least it's a heat pump one...
sprucay@reddit
Does your heat pump one work? The one we had just made the clothes warm and wet.
destria@reddit
Yeah it works great. Takes longer than a conventional one but it's gentler on the clothes.
Perception_4992@reddit
Err, buys a fan and some shades. A heat pump dryer is very eco.
Agitated_Parsnip_178@reddit
Many air conditioning units have a dehumidifying function.
anabsentfriend@reddit
I've got a tumble dryer, it only gets used about once a year. I actually can't remember when I last used it. It was given to me for free and lives in a cupboard so it will just stay there for washing emergencies.
The few hot days a year really doesn't justify air con for me. I don't mind hot weather. If I lived with someone who had a condition that made hot weather difficult for them, I'd consider it.
dbxp@reddit
Air con, just the appliances candry clothes but only aircon can cool a room
Dietcokeisgod@reddit
I have a tumble drier but it's in the garage and I last used it in 2020. I wouldn't use an air con just cos of the environmental cost.
yes1402@reddit
Get a dehumidifier for your clothes. They are cheaper to run than tumble dryer
Thank me later
CaptMelonfish@reddit
Tumble dryer.
I get the argument for the air con. But we have more rain than sun.
Figgzyvan@reddit
Air conditioning. I already have a tumble dryer.
endianess@reddit
My air con has dehumidifier capability (I'm sure most do). So combined with a drying rack makes quick work of drying clothes
JBEqualizer@reddit
You can't really pick one for the average British home. Air con might be handy for people living in the south of England but it's absolutely pointless for the 2-3 weeks of fairly hot sunny weather we get where I live. Whereas our tumble dryer gets used a lot from Autumn through to Spring and even occasionally in the Summer.
WelshBen@reddit
AC for sure. I never ever use a tumble dryer.
Kapika96@reddit
Why not both?
If you have to choose one though, then air con since that actually requires installation. You can get a combination washer/dryer easily that's basically plug and play. Air con is a bit more complicated to set up when moving to a new place if it isn't already there.
Funny-Strawberry1351@reddit
you can have portable AC units. i bought one from argos years ago. bit old now, but still does the job and keeps my bedroom at around 17-18 degrees
audigex@reddit
Yeah we have two portable ones. Couple of hundred quid each and about £30 a year to run (£0.50-1 per day ish for a month or two)
Wouldn’t trade them for twice as much money
This-Risk-3737@reddit
Are tumble dryers not standard? I've never lived anywhere without one.
LeTrolleur@reddit
Tumble dryer.
Grew up without air con, I can continue living without it now, my tumble dryer makes my towels fluffy and I like that more.
WishfulStinking2@reddit
Given that we don’t have hot weather the majority of the time, I’d rather have a drier. My preference would be to have good drying weather most of the time and actually need air con
littlebird2446@reddit
Tumble dryer.
I don’t care about air con my fan works wonders.
But living in a tiny flat with no outdoor space getting clothes dry in winter is awful.
incrediblepepsi@reddit
Couldn't manage without my tumble drier, would love a permanent aircon unit but the ratio of damp/ rainy days to 'too hot' days means the tumble drier wins.
audigex@reddit
Both, solar panels, and a green energy tariff
The nice thing about solar and AC is that the solar is most effective on the days you most need the AC
FornyHucker22@reddit
I ordered my air conditioner today but I use my tumble dryer more often
looking forward to a cool bedroom tho 😬
YouCanShoveYourMagic@reddit
I can't do without a tumble dryer because I live in the UK. Air con would be nice but things are still manageable at the moment.
PigletAlert@reddit
Air con. Tumble dryers are horrible clothes destroyers.
datguysadz@reddit
I have no use for air-conditioning.
HorrorAd7996@reddit
Never had a tumble dryer before so I’m going to go with AC even though I love this weather.
IcyPuffin@reddit
Tumble dryer. Air con would be nice on the really hot days, sure. But the dryer wins - i havent enough space to be constantly drying indoors with clothes horses etc, and i currenyly have no outside drying space that i could use, even if i wanted to - i dont want to as i hate the smell of washing that has been drying outside.
F1nut92@reddit
With the warming climate we currently have, I'd take AC any day over a tumble dryer, plenty of alternatives to a tumble dryer (even if they're not as good) but I think AC would be a god send for me when we get this warm, muggy heat whenever we get little heatwaves.
T_raltixx@reddit
Tumble dryer. I've never had aircon at home. I have far more days were I can't dry clothes without a tuble dryer than I do hot days.
AdEmbarrassed3066@reddit
Dryer all the way. I don't have air con and don't really need it. Yet. Ask me again in 20 years.
EasyCheesecake1@reddit
Tumble dryer.. easy, I live in a sub basement flat that never gets warm even in a heat wave.
danddersson@reddit
Have tumble drier, neither need nor want air con. House was designed and positioned so air con is not needed, I don't like the noise of aircon, and it would use power unnecessarily. Using power to cool a house when the generation of said power is what is causing the demand for air con seems - wrong.
Jolly-Avocado0@reddit
Judging by my house right now- tumble drier.
If i was at work - air con.
youshouldbeelsweyr@reddit
Tumble dryer. I hate clothes hanging inside, it's messy and damp.
LethalGrey@reddit
Air conditioning and it isn’t even CLOSE. I’d wash my clothes with an old Victorian hand washing rack if it meant air conditioning was standard in houses. Fucking hate summer.
Any-Republic-4269@reddit
Neither! One way we can stop things getting hotter is if we all use less energy
Single-Aardvark9330@reddit
Tumble dryers
Air dried towels just aren't the same
lordsteve1@reddit
Tumble dryer by a long shot. Yes it gets hot here sometimes but the amount of time when I need to dry laundry and can’t put it outside is far more common than the few weeks of very hot weather we get.
connolan1@reddit
As a standard feature probably a tumble drier. If it gets hot a fan foes the job, cheap to buy and easy to store. Temporarily putting in a tumble drier is a lot less convenient
Lassitude1001@reddit
A fan doesn't do a thing over about 28c unfortunately.
connolan1@reddit
One I've got did me well in the 30+ last year. Think it was over £100 though. The £40 ones definitely don't do too well in those higher temps
FigTreeRest@reddit
None. I prefer life without any (less energy, simpler life style, less cluttered house, etc). But I recognise they can be important to people.
ReanimatedCyborgMk-I@reddit
Living in a 60's house, tumble dryer is the essential. Nothing as nightmarish as needing to get clothes dry in the middle of winter/autumn when it's pissing it down outside or otherwise too cold to practically air dry anything,
If things get really bad with the heat we can at least open our windows and put the fan on, which doubles as a fan heater in the cold months.
LolaWithTheGreenEyes@reddit
Dryer. I can keep my house cool and I live on top of a hill and get a coastal breeze. Getting towels and bedding dry in winter without a dryer is a pain in the arse.
someguyontheweb99@reddit
Aircon I live in a Victorian mid terrace the holds heat. It heats up and stays warm in winter ins like being in an oven during summer
Sideways_Underscore@reddit
Makes sense to put AC in the room you spend the most time in. Can use it to heat in the winter without the boiler coming on.
notmentat@reddit
Given we have three air con units and no tumble dryer, I’ll go with air con!
ThinkIshatmyself@reddit
Air con. We use stand alone ones in the house and I genuinely couldnt live without them. We don't use a tumble dryer either.
I hate the warm weather though.
barriedalenick@reddit
I live in Portugal and I have aircon but no tumble drier and that's cool by me. It is very hard to keep cool in summer when it can hit 45c but drying clothes isn't much of an issue - even if the house looks a bit messy at times. Winters in Portugal are notoriously wet and humid!
Past-Obligation1930@reddit
I have both, and solar panels to assuage my guilt.
Euphoric-Orchid488@reddit
Having lived without the tumble dryer and never being able to get my clothes dry inside, definitely the dryer. My house is old and cold and never really gets hot
WhatevahMingah@reddit
Air con. My rumble dryer is struggling right this minute but I don’t care enough.
Ornery-Wasabi-1018@reddit
AC.
But then we don't have a tumble drier. In the place I did live where AC was required (like, summers stayed about 35C as a miminium temp) we had to gave a tumble drier, as ut was too dusty to dry outside. Our clothes wore out very quickly.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Air con.
I have portable air con, and whilst I wouldn't object to a tumble dryer, my dehumidifier works fine.
Fred_Derf_Jnr@reddit
Someone put the aircon on at work today, hated it. When it is used people turn it up far too much meaning you need to wrap up inside so you are ok when you go outside!
For me I wouldn’t have either, but if forced then it would be a tumble dryer.
JakeBees@reddit
Don’t really see the need for either but if I had to pick… AC
Sure-Recognition-262@reddit
Air-con. I'd not use it all that much (I live in Scotland) but I'd use it more than I'd use a tumble-dryer. I used to have a washer-dryer, and the only thing I ever used it for was to finish off the drying of towels to make them fluffier.
I expect tumble-drying is worse, as air con usage peaks at the same time as we're getting lots of carbon-free electricity from solar, so is probably when electricity generation is least carbon-intensive - whereas I expect the reverse will be true for tumble-dryer usage.
GroomingTips96@reddit
Have both (and solar panels before environmental lobby gets on me) tumble dryer was more important when we had young children. The air con now is more important overall living in London.

I live in a maisonette so need both unfortunately. The Aircon is a portable unit we use in the living room as it's always at least 15°c warmer than the rest of the house due to the neighbours heat rising and our PCs being on.The tumble dryer is in our bedroom and only goes on on a morning so the room can cool down before we try to sleep in a pool of sweat.

I don't have or need either but given the choice I'd have a tumble dryer
It doesn't get warm often and I much prefer hot weather to cold
Existing_Doughnut985@reddit
I can do 2-3 loads of washing and have them all dry by the end of the day with a dehumidifier
Glittering_Echo_7963@reddit
"Hot air like this" made me laugh from Glasgow. Can't tell today from any other day 😂😂 but I did watch the news!

Air con. I’d sell my first born for air con on a day like this.
Darkgreenbirdofprey@reddit
Would you rather have clean water from the tap or a toaster?
Obscure-Oracle@reddit
Air con, we don't even have a tumble dryer but the air con on a hot day is essential.
Relative_Grape_5883@reddit
Tumble dryer hands down. Totally game changer, but like washing machines and dish washers. Would rather not have a TV.
RoxyK1@reddit
Air con aggravates my asthma so tumble dryer all the way, which we have and wouldn‘t be without.
txe4@reddit
In a pinch your clothes will dry on a rack very fast in the dry air from an a/c...
notthedoodaa@reddit
How can you even compare the two? Air con all the way.
THROWRAsaltylemon@reddit
AC always, I already have a portable one for when the weather gets bad.
Tanedra@reddit
Air con, definitely. There's only two of us so air drying clothes isn't a big deal. We do have a portable air con now which has been a total lifesaver at times.
YodasGoldfish@reddit
Air Con. Can be used to cool, heat and dry the air. The latter two obviously help with drying your washing indoors.
