Update on the $40 portholes

We're currently getting a pretty heavy downpour so i thought itld upload some photos to show that these cheap windows do hold a seal (quite well in fact considering theres standing water on the bottom. Ill have to do something about that). The brown streaks are from the old portholes that leaked, these are currently dry as a bone but ill keep an eye on them for a while and see how the seal surface holds up after repeated opening

Now let's see how well they do this time next year, after sitting in the sun all year.

Ive had one installed for nearly 2 years thats in good condition still and multiple reviewers on amazon did 1 to 2 year updates
Raneynickelfire@reddit
I look forward to yours, and hope it's a good update.
I'm not being cynical - I genuinely do hope this works out for you. I've had to replace one too many to be hopeful, but I hope you're golden Captain!

Thanks and if youre still around the sub in a year or two you might see an update. Fair winds and safe sailing!

The real test isn’t rain, it’s waves smashing against them.

I can confidently say these portholes are no weaker, if not much stronger than the old ones were when i removed them
the__itis@reddit
Yeah but your baseline is literally the ones you were promoted to have replaced. Not the confidence boost it should be. Not saying these are not good, just saying portholes are critical features of a boat and I express concern due to safety for you and not for product bias. If they work they work.

For a blue water boat that would be of much greater concern but my boat isnt built for rougher conditions. Coastal pleasure cruises were the primary concern so ideally i wont be in the conditions that warrant these concerns. They are still valid though because you never know what the weather holds for you at sea and i can only assume these were built to handle it since they are only plastic, adhesive and screws
the__itis@reddit
Fair enough. I’m only blue water so I default to that. Cheers 🙏🏼

You too, fair winds and safe sailing!

I want one! Where did you get it?
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
All over amazon and ebay. Just search something like boat window or portholes and youll get tons of these in the results
5043090@reddit
Brand? Where purchased?
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
You can find them all over amazon and ebay by search portholes or yacht window. I chose one with lots of reviews on amazon

What about a 3m breaking wave on the deck? That is the real question here. If one of these let go in heavy weather it‘s gonna get dangerous real quick.
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
Well theyre installed in an oday 28 so if im in water that rough the likelihood of my boat surviving is already in question
turkphot@reddit
Point still stands, the concern is water pressure not rain.
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
I understand and its a valid concern. I just think that these windows are at least as strong as the ones that were in the boat before

You can't just tease us with cat portaits in the background and no cat pictures.
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
The white one has passed but the other one is currently napping under my blanket because shes scared of the rain lol

kitty knows that one of the cans has cat food

The real issue you’ll have to keep track of is how they handle UV
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
I already had one installed but its not in direct sun all day everyday. Even then its still been installed on my boat for nearly 2 years now with no signs of degredation or discoloration. I do with i could afford better but these are performing adequately for me so for
Westar-35@reddit
Cool, I hope they work out for you. I’m just saying UV is the enemy to keep in mind.
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
The day UV stops pestering us sailers will be a good day indeed lol
dwkfym@reddit
well, it'll probably be a very bad day for most metabolic entities on earth but sure
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
Yes but i wont need to pay extra for UV resistant stuff so it really works out if you think about it
bryangcrane@reddit
Heh :-)
sailonswells@reddit
This. plastics get brittle, turn colors, warp, and crack in UV. I'm glad they work fine, just don't expect them to have a long life.
handsomeandhumble@reddit
If you get standing water that means it's time to go sailing and heel over to drain it out :)
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
This guy gets it lol
dasreboot@reddit
i hated them. i found that new found metals tri matrix portholes worked better. they are thru bolted and reinforced with stainless.
Agent_Andy007@reddit (OP)
These can be thru-bolted at least but you do get what you pay for
DropperPosts@reddit
Yea it's going to be their longevity that's an issue
