Do you know any influencers in real life?

I recently found out that a girl I went to school with is now a skincare/fashion influencer on TikTok with almost 100k followers. She was in the 'popular' group so I didn't interact much with her but whenever I did she was always really nice, so fair play to her TBH.
20127010603170562316@reddit
I lost a friend to tiktok, he regards himself as an influencer.
He mimes puppets to lame tiktok comedians. None of his videos ever get more than 250 views, and he has over 2000 of them.
Cool_Doubt2152@reddit
Not an influencer now but best friends with someone who was Tumblr famous (basically the OG influencers) and people used to stop her in the street when we were younger.
One of my now friends as an adult also met her at a party I had, and realised she knew who she was and was already following her on IG.
New_Wind1566@reddit
Omg! Are you able to say who this is?
Cool_Doubt2152@reddit
I don’t wanna say her name as she has private socials and stuff now but she did a bit of YouTube as well, sometimes she did the Tumblr stuff with another friend of ours who was also somewhat Tumblr famous but less so than her from memory
clfhw@reddit
Did she have poufy black hair?
Cool_Doubt2152@reddit
I think everyone did in 2008 😅
lifeonmars111@reddit
becca rose?
piriformister@reddit
People got famous from Tumblr? Was it porn?
Cool_Doubt2152@reddit
This was 2007-2010, pre Instagram era before socials was monetised, most of them were about 14-16 so…no… but content was just about stuff people genuinely did and liked, and people who looked cool and had a particular style
ShoulderRound2504@reddit
joanna kutcher?
BedGirl5444@reddit
Tumblr had the original anorexia influencers
gladysloveusa@reddit
I’m going to guess Erika Bowes, and the less famous one Olivia Buck ?
MannequinFactory@reddit
i don't think this fits but omg throwback, i completely forgot about olivia!!
Cool_Doubt2152@reddit
Nope! Sorry
creamyjoshy@reddit
Chloe Ayling went to my school
Solid_Western_138@reddit
I used to know Chris Ingham from the Ingham family vlogs. He's awful and I fully believe the allegations about him.
notanomnivore@reddit
Omg I didn’t expect to see him mentioned here! How was he awful (outside of the obvious)?
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
Wanted to sell realistic dolls of his own children and said he doesn’t care what pedophiles might use them for. He also has a lot of allegations (with pretty convincing evidence) of messaging teen girls
First_Television_600@reddit
EXCUSE ME, WHAT??!!! 🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
Solid_Western_138@reddit
He had a YouTube video titled "hot tub fun with my sisters" with a thumbnail of two of his daughters in bikinis. I fully believe that he knows what he's doing.
putyrhandsup@reddit
Good God, what a day to be able to read 🤮
treesofthemind@reddit
That’s insane
notanomnivore@reddit
Yeah sorry by the obvious I meant the things that aren’t widely known about him. Gross slimy man
Solid_Western_138@reddit
This was before his YouTube channel. He used to hit on teenage girls all the time.
kipperfish@reddit
As a olderblader, I hate that bladers are tarnished by his association.
He's a disgusting little toad.
Solid_Western_138@reddit
I knew him because my ex used to skate with him. My ex stopped being mates with him because he was creepy towards teenage girls.
poptartdealerr@reddit
I met a lot of influencers as i was working at a new cafe that opened up in my city. All of them were invited for content and i was taking their orders at the till. Some of them were nice but most of them were not, they seemed entitled and not very happy with their job. But the shocking one was these 2 young girls that had come, bit rude and they fake their reactions a lot in front of the camera. I checked them online and they were portraying themselves nice and friendly. I understand they need to fake it a bit but it was very contrasting.
English_R0se@reddit
My best friend is an ‘influencer’ with almost 1M followers, I use the quotation marks because this isn’t is main career, it’s a side gig alongside is main career. I go out with him a lot and he gets stopped all the time by people asking for photos etc. can be quite jarring but just comes with knowing him. He is a genuine guy but it has got to his head a little, he outwardly tells people, including me, how much more important he is than anyone else lol.
fwendy123@reddit
I've known a few people who were internet famous. one guy from my college was an OG youtube content creator, very talented and ended making a very famous meme series that was popular with kids. a girl I taught in uni ended up becoming a travel/LGBTQ influencer, again very talented and a sweet person. I also knew a guy who was tumblr famous who got rightfully cancelled for secretly being a massive creep to teen girls
Big_Ad_8327@reddit
Was the first guy Tomska?
fwendy123@reddit
yes lol. he's a very nice guy irl, was very sweet to me as a younger student. it was always obvious he was going to be famous someday
gothiccherry@reddit
Is the first one tomska
TheYellowHouse1@reddit
My best friends brother and his partner are both influencers with millions of followers on each platform - tiktok, Instagram and YouTube. He's lovely, she is not. I have been down a few rabbit holes on their comments and forums and it's hilarious to see the things written about him as fact from 'followers / viewers' which are completely wrong and so far away from the truth.
CuriousHedgehog636@reddit
My technically ex-boyfriend is an influencer with ~400k Instagram followers. I say technically because we "went out" for 2 weeks when were 12. Then he dumped me at morning break and started going out with another girl at lunchtime! But I'm over it, really!!! (We remained friends for a while before drifting apart at about 15/16). He turned out to be gay anyway.
His online personality actually matches how I remember him, which is nice actually, he's quite genuine.
Octoboy1@reddit
I know a girl who jumped on OnlyFans when it was fairly new during Covid, now shes pivoted to be an influencer
She used to be really nice, shes a bit of a twat now.
A very wealthy twat, but still a twat
Max1357913@reddit
How do you know she’s very wealthy? I feel like the whole point of being an ‘influencer’ is trying to present your life as perfect despite how much you may be struggling
Annabobannaaa@reddit
OP knows her personally & still sees her
Psycho_Splodge@reddit
Yeah but you've seen the wealthy twat haven't you?
Octoboy1@reddit
Not sure what you mean, but yeah I see her fairly regularly, we're still friendly, shes just a bit of a twat
prankishink@reddit
i think they mean that presumably you've looked at her OnlyFans to view the aforementioned twat
Octoboy1@reddit
Oh I see, then no, not on some moral grounds but why pay for porn, especially as all her stuff is non nude stuff anyway!
Waste of money!
mosleyowl@reddit
How do you know it’s non nude if you haven’t paid for it
Octoboy1@reddit
Because I've spoken to her about it before
Necto_gck@reddit
No but I did bump into my first food blogger the other day. A new Popeyes opened near my gym, I walked past on the way and saw someone with a full set up, doing all those typical influencerss facial movement and stupid facial expression towards the camera, was surreal seeing it in person.
Flaramon@reddit
Weird one, but I met an influencer in a therapy group for anxiety. Social media was their comfort zone where they could be free of anxiety, but anxiety took over off camera.
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
I'm not psychiatrist but I can't imagine increasing your level of "fame" to be good for anxiety. But again, what do I know!
codeacab@reddit
These things can be pretty paradoxical. I have a fairly high stress and responsibility job and I'm usually very calm and connected at work, but at home I'm a nervous wreck over the smallest things.
pajamakitten@reddit
Same. I put it down to the fact that I am so anxious all the time that work just does not add anything else. Similar to the Hulk, my secret to appearing calm is that I am always anxious.
salutdamour@reddit
Fascinating. You’d think it’d be the other way around
Jill4ChrisRed@reddit
My fiancé works in film in South Wales so we know a lot of small famous people, he's friends with Dheanasaur on tiktok/instagram as he's known him for 10+ years, and has met almost the entire Welsh voice cast of the Elden Ring game through working with various projects with all of them. The only one he hasn't met is Blaidd's voice actor lol
QueSeRawrSeRawr@reddit
No but everyone I know who's in a band is trying to become one now, stupid social media.
TomatoAlarming245@reddit
I met an influencers boyfriend one night, in the smokers area of a club. He approached my (now husband) and I and asked if we wanted to meet her for £20 💀 I think he was drunk, but the way she portrays their relationship online, I think she would have been absolutely mortified.
My cats are also influencers (I’m being 100% serious.) It’s so much fun and they pretty much pay for themselves, which is a bonus! I’m aware how fickle social media is though, so I will never rely on it to pay my bills, it’s just a bit of fun.
Max1357913@reddit
Not sure if this counts but I often go to a local jam session and one of the guys whose sometimes there is a YouTube guitarist with half a million or so subscribers. Very chill guy, jammed iron maiden with him once which was fun
tomatobasilgarlic@reddit
I worked with someone who got famous because of her dog on tiktok. Harmless cutesy dog video stuff. Like hundreds of millions of views. Then someone else in that offices girlfriend inspired by the dog tiktok success started an onlyfans and is now a pornstar. Slippery slope. My advice: get a dog and post cute videos of the dog with songs which are trending on tiktok
FrostyRydia@reddit
Christ I'm only on reddit and don't use TikTok, Instagram or Snapchat (if that is still around) so don't anyone who is a influencer.
Wouldn't have a clue if they walked past me in the street. Is that weird or becoming the norm?
JakesShameWell@reddit
I went on a stag do with a famous Minecraft Youtuber.
He ordered breakfast whilst we were waiting for our activity to start which made us all late for the water park. Is now forever known as "beans on toast" amongst us.
Odisse1013@reddit
I live on the same street as one, posts videos of her deep cleaning routines, the outside of her house is a disaster, garden an absolute mess with rubbish piled up everywhere. Too anxious to clean up her garden or bring her bins in on time but will regularly ugly cry on social media when her first world problems get too much 🤷♂️
ODDxATLAS@reddit
I know two! One friend has a account dedicated to ethical living / activism / ecological focus. She's amazing and it's been her main job for years through brand deals and the like, and she has a book on the way. She has around 40k followers.
And another close friend who is an artist with a big focus on helping anyone and everyone make art and view art in a different accessible way. Really started to lean into just showing up and talking about the way they think and they exploded in a matter of months. Around 50k followers and they run free community talks as well as mentorship sessions.
So influencers in a creative and joyful way.
froggielefrog@reddit
I know a travel influencer - 350k followers. It's become a lot harder for her, especially needing to do the video content. She still gets quite a lot of her travel comped. Her real life persona and instagram persona are very different! She's much less chill/go with the flow than her instragram would have you believe.
Outrageous_Creme_597@reddit
I am one. We are genuinely assholes.
172116@reddit
I was at school with a girl who got pregnant her last term at uni, graduated, married the guy, and then immediately became a SAHM. She then proceeded to become a fairly early parenting influencer. Not hugely well known, but has both her fans and detractors, and she's a sharp business woman who at one point was earning enough that her husband was able to give up his job.
I hated her when we were at school together - she drove me up the wall, and her online personality is all the bits I hate ramped up to 11. However, I feel quite annoyed whenever I see someone online being nasty about her - I'm allowed to hate her because I know her, you don't, and can therefore shut your mouth!
pajamakitten@reddit
The same logic behind why only I can say anything bad about my sister.
Delicious_Aside_9310@reddit
I’ve only heard good things about your sister
alexthemo123@reddit
You on the other hand.....
DarkNinjaPenguin@reddit
The same logic behind why only we can say anything bad about France.
ermCaz@reddit
This is a copy and paste, seen it before.
Frauddogfrauddog@reddit
I’m pretty sure I know exactly who this is, and this does not surprise me at all
sapphire-sky-dragon@reddit
You dont get the monopoly on hating someone 😂😂😂 these influencers put their whole lives on line its pretty easy to see their real personalities and hate them.
172116@reddit
I'm not selfish about this - the other 120 people in our year at school are also allowed to hate her!
Sinkfold@reddit
Girl I went to school with became a moderately-popular influencer that posts comedy skits in-character while painted green. She was always lovely and cheery and her family was good to me, so can't begrudge her the success at all!
Honestly great to see somebody I know is nice getting the free cruise experience etc.
Fragrant_Yogurt1345@reddit
I think I know who this is! She seems very sweet
swashfxck@reddit
Was in the same year at school as Salt Papi of all people. Was a quiet kid who was into body popping/dancing.
I also know someone who used to work on Babestation and someone who’s pretty big on Instagram too, both have amazingly large houses now too.
dont-kink-shame-me@reddit
Jake Paul?!
Unusual-Profit4997@reddit
I went to drama classes with someone who’s now a comedy(?) influencer… question mark because I don’t find her funny, at all. She was a vile bitch as a teenager and doesn’t seem to have changed. Most of her comedy revolves around her being half naked and making anti-feminist jokes. But hey, at least she can afford to live in Dubai!
Nihilistic_Rainbow@reddit
Nicole Drinkwater?
Unusual-Profit4997@reddit
No comment…
InternationalRich150@reddit
For a minute i thought you was talking about Helena Moody, but shes not in Dubai, and is rarely if ever half naked! Glad it was someone else!
sheepandlambs@reddit
A girl I used to work with has 60,000 Instagram followers. Partly due to her formerly dating a semi-famous dude. And partly for posting a lot of thirst trap content.
JCoonday@reddit
Met ElzTheWitch several times through mutual friends. Very rude.
Minute-Being-9719@reddit
My cousin has around 10m followers and is quite famous in my country of origin. Not particularly close to her tho
peachypeach13610@reddit
Yeah. Both entirely consumed full time by what kind of content to create, sounds like a very miserable life. One is the fake blonde Essex girl who is evidently not smart, the other is smarter, just shallow.
Outrageous_Glove_467@reddit
Glad to see you’re not resentful about it…
peachypeach13610@reddit
I’m sorry you feel called out
Honey-badger101@reddit
Which essex girl...theres lots lol
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
“Fake blonde Essex girl who’s really stupid” I mean you could be telling the truth but you’re just feeding into that really cringy stereotype that only a stereotypical sweaty neck beard Reddit mods use.
grogustannie@reddit
I met an influencer at an event and found out from a friend afterwards that they used to be neighbours, and the influencer was actually quite rude to her and stuck up in real life
Also used to be friends with a girl who was best friends with a Tumblr famous girl. I got to hear about all of the insufferable things she used to do lmao
SeriousConfection722@reddit
Yes I do. For some reason several of my partners friends or their partners have social media following or attempting to be influencers. One of them is into fitness, running and gym. The other one does 'wellness' and also a travel account with their partner. Another one is trying to be a street interview questions person. Someone in my family dated a well known influencer. They were lovely but very different in person to their online persona. I deleted a few of my social media apps as I was getting bombarded every day with posts from all these people! It's tiring
Dazz316@reddit
My friends live across from a family blogger. Paint themselves as the best family ever, everybody is so nice, children are perfectly behaved and just like some sort of modern ideal of a 1950s white picket fence family. Except you'll hear the mother screaming HURRY UP YOU'LL BE LATE FOR SCHOOL and all the normal family shit. It's all for show.
LengthElectronic8814@reddit
Yes, I’m an influencer !
confused_mani@reddit
Quite a few in my area. Someone who was in my year at uni has been funnelling all her time & effort into being a fashion influencer. She’s at 30k right now on Instagram and is always saying she isn’t popular because she’s big, and if she was skinny she’d be waaay more popular.
She hates on slim/skinny people so much though. She’ll admonish more popular looks (i.e clean girl, minimalist) because they’re not fashionable, they’re just skinny. But her outfit choices are wacky and bizarre regardless of what the size of the person is.
I met her once during Freshers week. I was very slim and had a bit of a glow up during the summer, but my online photos were older so I looked a bit different. Nothing major, just no specs and makeup. She then tells me my photos look nothing like me and I need to update them ASAP. We go to Starbucks - she gets a fruit cup. I’m hungry so I get a cheese toastie and a big drink. She then judges my food, saying “omg you’re going to eat all that?” Aye I am, watch me?? Never met her again.
locoforcocothecat@reddit
Is the first girl based in Glasgow?
someonehasmygamertag@reddit
I used to know JMX
halloHank@reddit
I met one once at a party and didn't know what an influencer was. So I asked him, and what he did exactly. He became visibly angry and annoyed. I'm still none the wiser.
Miserable-Ad7835@reddit
I was sat opposite one on a train a few months ago, I was mpressed at my own restraint not to pinch him.
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
You were impressed that you didn’t assault someone just because their job is online? What a weird thing to say
Miserable-Ad7835@reddit
Yeah because they're obnoxious and annoying, no one else wants to hear them record their inane content.
VMS_UK@reddit
Think he was impressed he didn’t punch them because they have lost all train etiquette in favour of being the main character
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
Not all influencers are “main characters” that’s again some weird Reddit echo chamber stereotype that is only perpetuated by the the sweaty neck beard types
There’s zero evidence in that comment to suggest that the person was disrespecting train etiquette
Influencers actually respect train etiquette very well generally because drawing attention to yourself on a train you can’t leave when you’re well known sets you up for people asking for photos, conversations etc
VMS_UK@reddit
Thay wasn’t my opinion, that what what I thought might have been implied by the comment they made. Jesus Christ.
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
But that’s such an odd assumption to make to justify someone saying they want to assault someone just because they’re well liked with no further context lmao
Miserable-Ad7835@reddit
They're fucking loud and obnoxious, does anyone on hear live in the real world?
VMS_UK@reddit
It wasn’t justification, it’s insane to want to punch someone just because they’re on social media so it was an assumption made based on the stereotype that some influencers / vloggers are loud on trains snd public transport talking to cameras and not bothered about keeping quiet for others. Do you understand now?
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
That’s my point, that’s a weird stereotype that exclusively exists on Reddit amongst neck beards who resent people who are actually likeable
There are some obnoxious influencers obviously but 99% of obnoxious people on trains aren’t influencers, they’re regular people like the people who drink on trains or are on their way to a football match
Influencers are very quiet and reserved people in public because drawing attention to themselves can be harmful for the brand or mean they’re stuck on a 4 hour train with fans wanting to interact
VMS_UK@reddit
Stereotypes exist for a reason not just on Reddit amongst “neck beards”. 99% of disruptive people on trains aren’t influencers no, but this was specifically about an influencer
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
This stereotype is exclusive to Reddit where most redditors are lonely neck beards who are bitter towards people who are actually popular for the right reasons
No one in real life or on other social media has an issue with people who make their money by putting content online. That proves it’s a Reddit problem and not a realistic stereotype.
This influencer was NOT being disrespectful on the train, the commenter said they wanted to assault the person purely because they’re an influencer which is a bizarre comment to make.
VMS_UK@reddit
You’re projecting a lot, none of that was implied and you don’t know they hold those views at all. I guessed based on the fact they cant want to assault them jusy because they’re an influencer snd thought maybe it could be for X reason (not that that makes it ok either) and you’re continuing on like you wsnt to win Reddit right of the day, fucking cba with you.
pajamakitten@reddit
You misread pinch as punch though.
Few_Negotiation_7714@reddit
😂😂😂😂
d_an1@reddit
I don't know any influencers but I know someone with influenza if that counts.
TumblyBump@reddit
Yes. One of the worst. And yes she is what the press say.
notthedoodaa@reddit
This tells us nothing.
Nuthetes@reddit
Probably Bonnie Blue
VMS_UK@reddit
Tells us her flaps are open for business … seriously you cant work it out?
Extra_Actuary8244@reddit
Sexualising all women who choose to work online by suggesting they’re all sex workers is such a weird pervy comment to make
VMS_UK@reddit
Me? I didn’t, Lilly is a sex worker… she slept with over 1000 men in a 24 hour period and it’s been everywhere since
djwillis1121@reddit
How do you know that the original comment is about her? It's so vague
VMS_UK@reddit
An educated guess, who else would be counted as one of the “worst ones” and also have been in the press (not in a good way)? Seeing as people have been jumping to a lot of conclusions about opinions here im not saying all influencers who do onlyfans are bad, but her, Shes a bad influence on anyone and shame on the men who took part too. Her mum is her manager, and takes her nudes, it’s weird as fuck.
No_Currency6911@reddit
You sure know a lot about her though. I’ve genuinely never heard of her, I thought you must mean Bonnie Blue
VMS_UK@reddit
Isnt that her nickname? It’s the same person isn’t it? Know a lot about her what 2 facts based on an article written about her is a lot haha wtf..
No_Currency6911@reddit
Oh I genuinely have no idea if Bonnie Blue and Lily are the same person, as I have never heard of Lily. Well you sure were quick to announce it was her, faster than anyone else on this comment thread even thought of her. Just came across you could not wait to slag her off, regardless of any hints it was her, just starting announcing it was her.
VMS_UK@reddit
Nooo, i don’t like what she stands for or does but as for “cant wait to slag her off” couldn’t care less about her just thought it’s the only person they can mean as there aren’t many bad women influencers.. a lot of bad males in many scams and MLM type stuff but how many bad women do you know? Thats why..
No_Currency6911@reddit
Stop writing her name over and over then, as it really doesn’t come across as you ‘couldn’t care less’
pajamakitten@reddit
Who even said it was sex-related?
VMS_UK@reddit
They said “worst ones”, what other line of work would they be in to be called one of the worst ones? Cant just be vlogging, or makeup, or family content can it?
djwillis1121@reddit
There are countless people it could be
VMS_UK@reddit
Like who? Who else is as recently relevant to be mentioned like that?
Four-Assed-Monkey@reddit
Conversation is still too uselessly cryptic for me I’m afraid
VMS_UK@reddit
It’s the girl who did 1113 men in 24 hours!!
No_Currency6911@reddit
We are asking how you know they were talking about Lily?? You seem to have just made this up from nowhere and ran with it?! But not answering our actual question?!
VMS_UK@reddit
I just replied to that in the other comment
No_Currency6911@reddit
Where does it say anything about her flaps ?!?!?!
VMS_UK@reddit
Online, everywhere haha. It’s Lilly Phillips
No_Currency6911@reddit
?!? I’m talking about the comment you are replying to?!? They don’t mention anything about flaps????? Are you ok?????
djwillis1121@reddit
Yeah but where did anyone say that in this thread? I'm so confused
Four-Assed-Monkey@reddit
Ah right, I wouldn’t have counted her as an influencer as such
TumblyBump@reddit
I’ve answered the question. And given a bit more info. If you think I’m going to name the person and spill the beans, that isn’t going to happen.
Nuthetes@reddit
I am the closest out of my friend group/who I went to school with.
I'm not an influencer, but I have a moderately successful YouTube channel. Not a huge name, but I make a good living from it--between 80k-100k a year.
otterslovekelp@reddit
One of my best friends is a travel influencer, she kind of fell into it as she started a blog as a hobby and set up an Instagram alongside that that just went really well. She now has over 100k followers, her partner works with her and they make enough to both be able to live quite comfortably off of it.
She's stayed pretty normal I think! She's always kept a degree of separation between her online self and her personal life, I think being travel focussed makes that a bit easier as when she is home she doesn't feel pressured to share her "normal" life. She does know she is very lucky to be able to make a living in the way she does, and she also knows it is quite fragile and she works hard to keep up a steady stream of work, which I think keeps her grounded.
gottaloveteatime@reddit
Yes. I do aerials and pole fitness, and one of my friends posts reels and tutorials and has managed to do well on Instagram. She works really hard (is always in the studio practicing or at the gym), and she is also a really lovely person in real life. She still has a day job, but hopes to be a full time influencer, and I reckon she'll get there soon!
Independent-Loan-581@reddit
i worked for a red piller youtuber. piece of shit. needed the job, quit fast.
John_Catachan@reddit
A relative of mine is one. Gets invited to film premiers and whatnot. Has a few hundred thousands followers. Makes them think they're superior to the rest of us lol.
Outrageous_Glove_467@reddit
Glad to see you’re not jealous lol
Cinnamonbagelfan@reddit
Yeah my cousins best friend is a popular beauty influencer with 300k subscribers and Instagram followers. She is so sweet I used to work for her. She has a really sad personal life and it’s nothing like how she portrays it on social media:(
pickindim_kmet@reddit
Kind of. I befriended a girl about 10+ years ago and she was from another country. We were good friends for a few years and then drifted but remained in "happy birthday" contact, if that makes sense.
All of a sudden one day I saw she applied to be her home country's Miss Universe, won it, became a poster girl for her country and is now with a 100k+ follower social media pretty much living off that past fame. Good for her though, she was a nice person. I think it's gone to her head a little bit but hey, I suppose you've got to play the influencer game in order to be successful.
ease__@reddit
I searched my hometown in famous birthdays and learnt my 2nd or 3rd cousin is a tiktok star
Melodicmat@reddit
I learnt i'm related to james acaster recently lol. I've never watched him on TV at all and doubt i'd recognise him. Just heard of his name
bloo-popsicles@reddit
Give him a cabbage if you ever meet him
sapphire-sky-dragon@reddit
Ive no desire to lniw any infuencers, only they influence me to do is turn them off. They are usually self centered narcissists who thrive on causing drama and misery and are fuelled by money.
Outrageous_Glove_467@reddit
Interesting to see that is your response to people to who carve their own path. This whole comment section is just crabs in a bucket.
birdbreathing@reddit
Yes! Super jarring difference in looks / voice when off camera but genuinely does hustle a lot. It’s a lot more work than it looks
phatboi23@reddit
same with youtube/streaming.
a LOT more hours goes into it than people think compared to the actual hours they're on camera.
Sway_RL@reddit
Yep, like 10 years ago I tried streaming. I did loads of research, bought stuff I needed like webcam and a decent mic.
I maybe streamed daily for about 4-6 hours after work for around a month and didn't get higher than 4 viewers. Tried marketing myself online and didn't see much improvement over the first year. Gave up not long before the two year mark because it was exhausting and made me miserable.
phatboi23@reddit
Aye.
It's really a case of networking and getting pure luck with a raid or a shout-out from someone much bigger than you really.
birdbreathing@reddit
I’m ngl streaming sounds like hell. 10 hours a day being watched by 1000s of people. Have to be male centred if you’re a woman and act like a baby. no wonder everyone who stream turns evil, u either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.
phatboi23@reddit
it's a lot of work, also streaming 10 hours a day is how you end up going fucking insane.
i know a few people who only stream 2-4 hours on their set days who do well, helps using the streams for youtube videos too.
a LOT of work still though.
Away-Ad4393@reddit
No thank goodness.
Outrageous_Glove_467@reddit
Crab in a bucket lmao
Lynvor@reddit
I was a member at the same gym at one point as a popular fitness influencer but never knew her personally.
bacon_cake@reddit
I know a beauty influencer, it's a tragic tale though.
A few years back she actually got talking to Andrew Tate before he got big and tried to go and meet him but her parents shut it down. Then she developed an eating disorder.
TomThomas88@reddit
Yeh, she got an all expenses paid trip out to Dubai with a few other influencer girls, so I know it's very likely that she's probably been shat on a couple of times.
She changed how she speaks, which is now very annoying.
StatisticianUsual471@reddit
I know about guy who tried and failed
Iworkinfashionblah@reddit
Yes I do, as first I liked her but slowly saw how inauthentic she was/is. What she discussed privately vs what she promoted online are absolutely at opposite ends, I grew to dislike her because of this. The space she “works” is actually to a reasonably vulnerable audience and she cashes in on their naivety. Interestingly, she struggles to keep friends and her latest off-shoot of her business (she rebrands constantly and calls this latest thing her calling, until it doesn’t make money and they she pivots) anyway none of our mutual friends follow it, most of them have also grown to not like her. She’s currently in “wellness and manifesting” she was originally helping single mums build a community and now she’s selling to them.
blueroses8000@reddit
Yes there is a local girl who’s done really well and become a very big page, she’s known across the country if you’re part of the demographic interested in her content.
She’s genuinely really nice and posts lifestyle, food, travel and shopping stuff in a way that’s always really helpful, informative and friendly, and hardly posts her actual face so it’s not even about posing or loving herself.
echo_melon@reddit
I went to sports practice/played at the same club as an influencer who has around 8 Million subscribers across tiktok and YouTube. He's so nice in real life, very humble and down to earth, and I didn't even know he was an influencer for ages as he never brought it up! He's just a normal guy to me, so I find it funny whenever we hang out and he gets stopped for autographs or pictures.
swagbytheeighth@reddit
I know 3 medical influencers (of varying success) and they are all nice people. I find some of their content cringe but they are nice down to earth people.
softchickenjuice@reddit
Yeah. 120k IG followers. Totally different off and on cam. She asks her mother for money to pay rent in the city center while shes getting sponsorships, even met people like Little Mix etc. Furthermore, she had a little incident that disfigured a part of her body and which she blames her mum for because her mum couldnt afford her a private hospital as she didnt get a holiday insurance. But online she preaches how much it changed her mindset, beauty is skin deep and she loves her family a lot. Also asked my other friend if he knows any rich guy looking for a sugar baby.
I also know another influencer. She is like model for aesthetic. Super nice and sweet. I love her style, it is very natural and embracing real body, no filter or photoshop. Really cool cos I would see her pores or blemishes. Sadly she got groomed by a guy for a few yeats but she left him. Thanks god!
Willing_Coconut4364@reddit
I've dated real life models and a few only fans girls. I've also dated a relatively well known pornstar.
Opposite-Sky2099@reddit
My old primary school best friend became a famous influencer (1mil+ across various platforms). She was actually bullied a lot in primary school but I always did think she would go into something creative.
snowdroptiger@reddit
This thread makes me think I have an above average concentration of them in my life. As I’ve got three as close friends although all in different influencing spheres: one ladies fashion in late thirties, one travel, one lifestyle/political journalist sorta. I wonder if this is more common in London or if I am just attracting them as pals somehow
Daftpigeon@reddit
I used to work with someone who is a Christmas Influencer. Never quite worked out what that is. I can appreciate the hustle, they have always got multiple side projects on the go and must work really hard to keep it's momentum going and they've got a decent sized following.
But I also found them to be one of the most self centred and self absorbed person I'd ever met. They're friendly enough and will chat with anyone, but in the two years I knew them I never heard them ask a single question about anyone else, while they will talk forever about themselves, their holidays, their plans and past stories. Just no interest in anyone else at all
Throwaway-28218129@reddit
A girl at the gym I go to has 200k+... shes about as annoying as youd expect

Yep, one who has 5m+ followers and has absolutely bags of cash.
RetroRegretso@reddit
I'm very fortunate to know a 'binfluencer' who kindly reminds us what day bin day is.
getoutmywayatonce@reddit
My neighbour has done every irritating thing imaginable to me, really blood boiling type stuff… but her random habit is going around really late at night before collection day to bring several neighbours bins out. I’m not sure why she does this, but it makes up for all the other crap tbh. The duality of mankind is very odd lol

Im very proud to be the local influencer. I take great pride in my civic duty.

Sounds like my German neighbour, she keeps the whole block in check.

High single digits.
Western-Edge-965@reddit
i live on a road now where the bins are always out so we dont need to remember. In my last place i relied on my binfluencer to let me know when to put out

Some years ago I went on a small group holiday with a travel company that mainly appeals to so travellers. It was a great trip and I met some lovely people but the experience was overshadowed by an ‘influencer’ who had been given a place for free. She was absolutely horrible and definitely changed the vibe of the trip. Several of us complained about it after as it’s fair to assume on trips like that that everyone is in the same boat and up for making friends. The rest of us definitely bonded over our shared dislike for her though!
ButtweyBiscuitBass@reddit
I know a couple but they both have to work still. One of them has 40k followers and it's essentially like running any other small business while you have a 9-5 going.
Themagiciancard@reddit
I knew a girl from school who became some sort of influencer, living in Dubai, wearing luxury brands - the whole nine yards... Learned a couple of years ago that she was likely getting shit on for money so that was a turn of events. I'm a content creator myself but very much D tier so none of my friends see me any differently (just the way I like!)
EasyPiece@reddit
My cousin's daughter who is in her 20s is a self-proclaimed fashion influencer and is just as insufferable as that sounds.
destria@reddit
My cousin is a low level influencer, she does it on the side of her real job. She has 50k followers on IG. She mainly does make up and fashion. She seems to get a few brand sponsors every month or so. No idea if she earns much besides those.
mrskristmas@reddit
Vaguely. Years ago there was a mum at one of my children's schools, who I had never heard of, but I was told she was an influencer. I looked her up and she had 50k followers on Instagram. Loads of freebies and gifted days out but really low engagement on her posts. So I'm guessing she bought her followers. Her children looked really bored in all her videos and photos. They didn't look like they had any interest in being part of her "brand."
JWills1k92@reddit

browsingatworklol@reddit
I know a few, 250k+ YouTube/100k+ Instagram. They are either exactly the same as they appear online or they are a complete twat in real life and appear like someone who is best pals with everyone online and can never do no wrong.
AdultADHDer@reddit
I lived with a big tech influencer in first year of uni, his channel had 10k then and in 2nd year he went viral and has millions of subscribers now - fair play to him for making a (very successful) career from it.
howunoriginal2019@reddit
I know a few car influencers, they're all very nice, some have huge followings. They go all over the world to all the top car events. They all have really nice cars and are extremely knowledgeable, massive car geeks. Most of them started out just taking pictures of cars in London on the weekends, now it's their main jobs.
Current_Mongoose_844@reddit
I dated one once. Mistake
Rusty_Tap@reddit
I recently attended the wedding of 2 influencers. Not only were the couple influencers, but so were a huge portion of the guests.
It was as terrible as you might imagine. There was no plan, no timings, just dozens of self-absorbed people recording themselves every time there was an available few seconds doing the most stupid activities you can possibly imagine. Dancing in front of the flowers, dancing on the stairs (they had carpet!), pretending to walk through the grounds, pretending to like the flowers, pretending to eat the food, crying like dickheads. There was so much crying, but only if the front facing camera was on.
It was the most simultaneously eye opening and frustrating couple of days of my entire life and I should have said I was busy washing my hair instead.
Pepsi_E@reddit
I mean maybe but I don't actually know what counts as an influencer. Over a certain number of followers? if you get paid commission to promote clothes/products? If you're famous enough to be invited onto podcasts with other C list celebs or be asked to go on Love Island? Just genuine question what classes as an "influencer"?
hollysian16@reddit
Not an influencer, but my partner has quite a good following (nearly 100k). He streams while he’s at work and a lot of people are interested in watching it. He’s never done a sponsor or ad though, he just gets the money from views and subs on top of his actual wage.
MrPogoUK@reddit
I don’t know if he counts as an influencer as not actively trying to promote stuff or make any money from it, but my father in law has somehow got about a million followers on TikTok by posting random shite from the never ending holiday his retirement involves (seriously, the in-laws only spend about two months a year in their own apartment), which is mainly photos and short videos spliced into clips with terrible music over the top!
sweencat@reddit
Know a lad that was on Love Island he's got about 400k followers on Instagram, does some tagging of brands mainly fitness related stuff and some modelling. Still has a full time job so I think its just sort of a side hustle. He's a really nice down to earth lad to be fair and not what you would call your typical "influencer"
Mrs_Majima@reddit
Yep. She is a solo mum influencer and is very fake online compared to how she is in real life.

Yes. I knew one who focused on affordable and solo travel. Wrote about the small things they did to “save” to afford the lifestyle. But the truth is their trips were all funded by their high-earning husband. 🤣
piriformister@reddit
A friend of mine married a girl with 200k followers on Instagram. He thinks it's all a bit silly and fake (she was big enough to regularly get endorsement requests and some of the stuff companies send over were absolutely average) but does it out of love.
I got to be the cameraman to one of their stories, which was cool. It did take 30mins to get a 10 second clip right though.
TwoValuable@reddit
No one super famous, but my brother had a semi popular for the area cooking Instagram and used to be sent promo stuff and had a few paid meals out. He stopped when he got a real job and I said it was silly because he's current job involves a lot of travel but I think it might go against company policy.
A friend of mine had a really popular pharmacist tiktok (comedy not medical advice) but then the company he worked for essentially said he couldn't do it anymore and still work there. Obviously he wasn't going to give up his job over tiktok (which even with millions of views that his videos were getting doesn't pay the bills).
I also don't know him personally but I'm pretty sure I've spotted AtomicShrimp of YouTube fame a few times whilst out and about in the New Forest area.
Keycuk@reddit
I know a couple who both so very well on ticktok, the mum does makeup and toys and the dad does gaming stuff.
Smilingtribute@reddit
I went to college with ‘littlestchicken’ a popular Scottish music influencer.
He’s horrible. Puts on a persona for the cameras. He was the year above me in college and would always get in trouble. He used to be quite cocky in college and when TikTok came. He quit acting because of it. He got an agent once he left college and nearly got into the RCS but they didn’t let him in past the final round.
Brent_Goose@reddit
I knew a guy who had some success doing workout/thirst trap content on Instagram, then when made redundant during covid he pivoted to OnlyFans. I came across him the other day in one of those satirical "when influencers stop you going about your day" compilation videos. I just checked and his TikTok is at 1.1 million followers.
He was always very proud of his appearance, he's one of those very low BF% muscular guys that I doubt most women actually find attractive. He was nice and charming enough, but I always found him rather insincere. In the early days he'd post a lot about how much money he was making, but I don't know to what extent he was being truthful.
The only insider knowledge I have about him is that, despite what many of his viewers speculate, he is in fact straight. He seems to have realised his core audience and did a lot of buttplay videos and non-sexual content with gay OF models, but IRL he's only into women.
itsfourinthemornin@reddit
I wouldn't put them fully in the "influencer" category because it's not a case of them flogging you shit, "aesthetic lifestyle" type and similar when influencer comes to my mind anyway. But I have an almost life-long friend (friends when young, moves, lost touch, reconnected as young adults) who does singing online, singing competitions and the like. Really proud of her getting out of her shell and sharing her voice!
you-effing-numpty@reddit
I know 2 that are successful, by successful I mean they actually get paid.
One is a fashion influencer with roughly 200k on her Instagram. Her gigs are usually just promoting clothes that suit her vibe (she has a niche).
The other is my sister who is giving relationship and decorating advice on tiktok. I don't know why, all her relationships have been train wrecks, but people send her stuff for her projects.
DeadShot98564@reddit

Yeah I know one who has over 100k insta followers and does TikTok and all that stuff, she was one of the posh girls in school, always said her dream was to marry a rich man and do no work, and she was not nice ngl, if you were in her way she would just scream “MOVE NOW” and stuff like that😂
Spare_Night_2695@reddit
One used to be a Fortnite pro when he was in years of 10-11 , had 250k subs on YouTube
Now he’s trying to be a fitness influencer , I think has 8k followers rn

One of my friends wife is a food blogger. He absolutely loves it. They eat out multiple times a week for free.

She is not your typical influencer and is a pretty ‘normal’ human with an IG account.
Warngumer@reddit
When doing my PhD a post-doc in the same office was also a small scale Instagram food influencer person, so she'd sometimes go out for fancy free lunches or dinners being put on by new places etc. she apparently stumbled into it by accident to, just got things after posting enough stuff about her normal meals out. It was kinda nice cause we could ask her for recommendations for places to eat out in the city.

My friend used to live with someone who was a mid-sized skincare influencer. She used to get sent so much product from so many different companies it essentially became useless as she didn’t physically have enough time to use it all up, and quite easily lost track of which products worked and which didn’t (you need to use skincare for several weeks usually to see if it actually is working or not).
She even struggled to give it away after a while as it kept arriving and everybody she knew already had a full quota of skincare products from the stuff she’d already been sent.
Definitely a luxury problem but quite a strange predicament to find yourself in.
(She couldn’t really sell it online either as that’s generally a big no for brands in the industry)
NecessaryTraining508@reddit
Someone I went to school with lives abroad and works as an influencer. I saw pictures from a photoshoot he did where he visited 'home' for Christmas. The photos were taken in a stately home rather than his mum's council flat behind little Tesco. I wonder how much of what else he shows is a complete fabrication.
monkeyspanker86@reddit
Probably 90% of it, I know people that rent high end cars for an hour just to take photos, I used to work in a the private airline business and people would pay thousands just to set up cameras inside the planes and take pictures etc it’s wild
Stifton@reddit
I was besties with a girl who's an influencer for many many years, she does food stuff and has been featured on TV, does really well for herself. We still talk occasionally, and it seems that being an online creator has changed her for the better actually, weirdly enough. The social climbing and the sort of performing has always been there, but it seems to have simmered down a lot since she's broke through and made it her full time job, she's also grown a lot in confidence. She was very emotionally explosive and impulsive years back which is why I stepped back from the friendship, I'm assuming with the reprocussions actually affecting her more than just socially, it's sort of forced her to address a lot of that. Very happy for her and proud of her, she's grafted for years for this
NumeroRyan@reddit
Yeah, one of my team members left to become one and has since signed deals with Gucci, Hollister etc for modelling.
Such a nice, humble, lovely dude, which is why I employed him with no experience for a job as I saw he had great potential. Was very excited for him when he handed his notice in as the income was giving him enough to do it full time.

I know people who post their lives on socials and get paid for product advertising sometimes because that’s what influencing is - freelance advertising. I also know nurses, sales directors etc

I sort of know two, one that I wouldn’t count as a friend but I know her well enough to say hi when I see her out - we have a lot of mutual friends. The other I’ve met loads of times but she forgets me every single time.
They are, without a doubt, two of the most obnoxious, stuck up, narcissistic and horrible people I’ve ever met. The one I know slightly better is a genuinely really bad person. Cheated on her ex husband and lied about it, made a bunch of our mutual friends swear not to tell him, she basically used him for money.
I say “influencers” - both of these people have less than £100k followers each but pretend they’re living the life. It’s a bit pathetic. I know behind closed doors it’s not true.

OilAdministrative197@reddit
Know quite a few running influencers biggest with 340k followers and then pro athletes too. All nice enough but fairly boring people. Havnt met the social media ones in a while so interested to know if their road to Olympics videos is something they genuinely believe or just for the views though. Because all the people I know who have been or aiming for the olympics don’t have social media presence really. It’s genuinely too demanding to train to an Olympic standard and be a decent YouTuber. There two very different skills and I don’t think one man /woman bands can do it. Like the physicality of training at that standard whilst trying to be personable every day is just impossible. Like people training at the highest levels will flip out at stuff that seems trivial but when you’re that exhausted from training the tiniest inconvenience suddenly becomes a horror.
Know a few science / academic influencers too maybe ~100k. I respect the grind but they’re annoyingly positive people 😂
CurrencyIll9145@reddit
yeah, i worked with someone who has over 100K on instagram. she was a nice girl - extremely intelligent/educated, pretty, from a rich family - but PAINFULLY insecure, especially regarding men. i almost think she was pushing back against her parents who were very traditional and culturally would've expected her to be married by now.
my ex had over 100K followers on the sports side of twitter (albeit nameless, faceless profile) & i used to rib him for it all the time. he doesn't bother with it anymore as it's become a cesspit

Yes I know, three.
I think it’s probably quite common to know a couple these days.
I suppose to an extent they more often than not will be “popular”… The one I’ve known all the way from school definitely fitted in to that category but she was also genuinely really nice and spoke to just about everyone, so there’s very little room for resentment.
She’s basically involved in the music industry now… Fair play to her…

I know two! One is a mum-influencer, especially a big deal around expat mums, raising kids in different cultures etc. she's a bit dumb and sweet in person, being a mum is really her whole identity. She still has her normal job but paid off her mortgage with her social media money.
I know another one who is like a yoga/fashion "girly", and she's properly famous, she's married to a rich guy but still a bit scammy with MLM stuff. I heard she's not talking to anyone from our school.
